Active and passive stabilization of a high-power UV frequency-doubled diode laser

We present a resonantly frequency-doubled tapered amplified semiconductor laser system emitting up to 2.6 W blue light at 400 nm. The output power is stable on both short and long timescales with 0.12% RMS relative intensity noise, and less than 0.15%/h relative power loss over 16 hours of free running continuous operation. Furthermore, the output power can be actively stabilized, and the alignment of the input beams of the tapered amplifier chip, the frequency doubling cavity and-in case of fiber output-the fiber can be optimized automatically using computer-controlled mirrors.

Difference-frequency combs in cold atom physics

Optical frequency combs provide the clockwork to relate optical frequencies to radio frequencies. Hence, combs allow to measure optical frequencies with respect to a radio frequency where the accuracy is limited only by the reference signal. In order to provide a stable link between the radio and optical frequencies, the two parameters of the frequency comb must be fixed: the carrier envelope offset frequency $f_{\rm ceo}$ and the pulse repetition-rate $f_{\rm rep}$. We have developed the first optical frequency comb based on difference frequency generation (DFG) that eliminates $f_{\rm ceo}$ by design - specifically tailored for applications in cold atom physics. An $f_{\rm ceo}$-free spectrum at 1550 nm is generated from a super continuum spanning more than an optical octave. Established amplification and frequency conversion techniques based on reliable telecom fiber technology allow generation of multiple wavelength outputs. In this paper we discuss the frequency comb design, characterization, and optical frequency measurement of Sr Rydberg states. The DFG technique allows for a compact and robust, passively $f_{\rm ceo}$ stable frequency comb significantly improving reliability in practical applications.

Passive intrinsic-linewidth narrowing of ultraviolet extended-cavity diode laser by weak optical feedback

We present a simple method for narrowing the intrinsic Lorentzian linewidth of a commercial ultraviolet grating extended-cavity diode laser (TOPTICA DL Pro) using weak optical feedback from a long external cavity. We achieve a suppression in frequency noise spectral density of 20 dB measured at frequencies around 1 MHz, corresponding to the narrowing of the intrinsic Lorentzian linewidth from 200 kHz to 2 kHz. The system is suitable for experiments requiring a tunable ultraviolet laser with narrow linewidth and low high-frequency noise, such as precision spectroscopy, optical clocks, and quantum information science experiments.
