Formation and stability of vortex solitons in nematic liquid crystals

We study the propagation dynamics of bright optical vortex solitons in nematic liquid crystals with a nonlocal reorientational nonlinear response. We investigate the role of optical birefringence on the stability of these solitons. In agreement with recent experimental observations, we show that birefringence-induced astigmatism can eventually destabilize these vortex solitons. However, for low and moderate birefringence, vortex solitons can propagate stably over experimentally relevant distances.

Optical Thouless pumping transport and nonlinear switching in a topological low-dimensional discrete nematic liquid crystal array

We theoretically investigate a Thouless pumping scheme in the 1D topological Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model for single and multiple band-gaps systems when implemented in a discrete nematic liquid crystal arrangement. For an electrically controlled SSH waveguide array, we numerically demonstrate edge-to-edge light transport at low power levels. On the other hand, at higher powers, the transport is frustrated by light-induced nonlinear defect states, giving rise to robust all-optical switching.

Unveiling the orbital angular momentum and acceleration of electron beams

New forms of electron beams have been intensively investigated recently, including vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum, as well as Airy beams propagating along a parabolic trajectory. Their traits may be harnessed for applications in materials science, electron microscopy and interferometry, and so it is important to measure their properties with ease. Here we show how one may immediately quantify these beams' parameters without need for additional fabrication or non-standard microscopic tools. Our experimental results are backed by numerical simulations and analytic derivation.

Parametric wave interaction in quadratic crystal with randomized distribution of ferroelectric domains

We study the parametric wave interaction in qua- dratic nonlinear media with randomized distribution of the ferroelectric domains. In particular, we discuss properties of second and cascaded third harmonic generation. We derive analytical formulas describing emission properties of the second and third harmonics in the presence of domain disorder and show that the latter process is governed by the characteristics of the constituent processes, i.e. second harmonic generation and sum frequency mixing. We demonstrate the role of randomness on various second and third harmonic generation regimes such as Raman-Nath and Čerenkov nonlinear diffraction. We show that the randomness-induced incoherence in the wave interaction leads to deterioration of conversion efficiency and angular spreading of harmonic generated in the processes relying on transverse phase matching such as Raman-Nath. On the other hand forward and Čerenkov frequency generation are basically insensitive to the domain randomness.

Efficient Beam Converter for the Generation of Femtosecond Vortices

We describe an optical beam converter for an efficient transformation of Gaussian femtosecond laser beams to single- or double-charge vortex beams showing no spatial or topological charge dispersion. The device achieves a conversion efficiency of 75% for single- and 50% for double-charge vortex beams and can operate with high energy broad bandwidth pulses. We also show that the topological charge of a femtosecond vortex beam can be determined by analyzing its intensity distribution in the focal area of a cylindrical lens.

Materials processing with tightly focused femtosecond vortex laser beams

This letter is the first demonstration of material modification using tightly focused femtosecond laser vortex beams. Double-charge femtosecond vortices were synthesized with the polarization-singularity beam converter described in Ref [1] and then focused using moderate and high numerical aperture optics (viz., NA = 0.45 and 0.9) to ablate fused silica and soda-lime glasses. By controlling the pulse energy we consistently machine high-quality micron-size ring-shaped structures with less than 100 nm uniform groove thickness.

Incoherent interaction of nematicons in bias-free liquid-crystal cells

We study experimentally the propagation dynamics and interaction of a pair of mutually incoherent nematicons: spatial optical solitons in nematic liquid crystals. In contrast to earlier studies, we consider a bias-free liquid-crystal cell and compare the soliton interaction in copropagating and counterpropagating geometries. We analyze the dependence of nematicon interaction on input power and observe a direct manifestation of a long-range nonlocal nonlinearity. Attraction of counterpropagating solitons requires higher powers and longer relaxation times than that of copropagating nematicons due to losses-induced power asymmetry of counterpropagating nematicons.
