Spectral Theory on Commutative Krein C*-algebras

A Banach involutive algebra is called a Krein C*-algebra if there is a fundamental symmetry (an involutive automorphism of period 2) such that the C*-property is satisfied when the original involution is replaced with the new one obtained by composing the automorphism with the old involution. For a given fundamental symmetry, a Krein C*-algebra decomposes as a direct sum of an even part (a C*-algebra) and an odd part (a Hilbert C*-bimodule on the even part). Our goal here is to develop a spectral theory for commutative unital Krein C*-algebras when the odd part is a symmetric imprimitivity C*-bimodule over the even part and there exists an additional suitable "exchange symmetry" between the odd and even parts.

The Normed Ordered Cone of Operator Connections

A connection in Kubo-Ando sense is a binary operation for positive operators on a Hilbert space satisfying the monotonicity, the transformer inequality and the continuity from above. A mean is a connection $σ$ such that $A σA =A$ for all positive operators $A$. In this paper, we consider the interplay between the cone of connections, the cone of operator monotone functions on $\R^+$ and the cone of finite Borel measures on $[0,\infty]$. %We define a norm for a connection in such a way that the set of operator connections becomes %a normed ordered cone. %On the other hand, the cone of operator monotone functions on $\R^+$ %and the cone of finite Borel measures on $[0,\infty]$ are equipped with suitable norms. The set of operator connections is shown to be isometrically order-isomorphic, as normed ordered cones, to the set of operator monotone functions on $\R^+$. This set is isometrically isomorphic, as normed cones, to the set of finite Borel measures on $[0,\infty]$. It follows that the convergences of the sequence of connections, the sequence of their representing functions and the sequence of their representing measures are equivalent. In addition, we obtain characterizations for a connection to be a mean. In fact, a connection is a mean if and only if it has norm 1.

Characterizations of Connections for Positive Operators

An axiomatic theory of operator connections and operator means was investigated by Kubo and Ando in 1980. A connection is a binary operation for positive operators satisfying the monotonicity, the transformer inequality and the joint-continuity from above. In this paper, we show that the joint-continuity assumption can be relaxed to some conditions which are weaker than the separate-continuity. This provides an easier way for checking whether a given binary opertion is a connection. Various axiomatic characterizations of connections are obtained. We show that the concavity is an important property of a connection by showing that the monotonicity can be replaced by the concavity or the midpoint concavity. Each operator connection induces a unique scalar connection. Moreover, there is an affine order isomorphism between connections and induced connections. This gives a natural viewpoint to define any named means.

Operator Connections and Borel Measures on the Unit Interval

A connection is a binary operation for positive operators satisfying the monotonicity, the transformer inequality and the joint-continuity from above. A mean is a normalized connection. In this paper, we show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between connections and finite Borel measures on the unit interval via a suitable integral representation. Every mean can be regarded as an average of weighted harmonic means. Moreover, we investigate decompositions of connections, means, symmetric connections and symmetric means.

A Remark on Gelfand Duality for Spectral Triples

We present a duality between the category of compact Riemannian spin manifolds (equipped with a given spin bundle and charge conjugation) with isometries as morphisms and a suitable "metric" category of spectral triples over commutative pre-C*-algebras. We also construct an embedding of a "quotient" of the category of spectral triples introduced in arXiv:math/0502583v1 into the latter metric category. Finally we discuss a further related duality in the case of orientation and spin-preserving maps between manifolds of fixed dimension.

Non-Commutative Geometry, Categories and Quantum Physics

After an introduction to some basic issues in non-commutative geometry (Gel'fand duality, spectral triples), we present a "panoramic view" of the status of our current research program on the use of categorical methods in the setting of A.Connes' non-commutative geometry: morphisms/categories of spectral triples, categorification of Gel'fand duality. We conclude with a summary of the expected applications of "categorical non-commutative geometry" to structural questions in relativistic quantum physics: (hyper)covariance, quantum space-time, (algebraic) quantum gravity.

A Horizontal Categorification of Gelfand Duality

In the setting of C*-categories, we provide a definition of "spectrum" of a commutative full C*-category as a one-dimensional unital saturated Fell bundle over a suitable groupoid (equivalence relation) and prove a categorical Gelfand duality theorem generalizing the usual Gelfand duality between the categories of commutative unital C*-algebras and compact Hausdorff spaces. Although many of the individual ingredients that appear along the way are well-known, the somehow unconventional way we "glue" them together seems to shed some new light on the subject.

Modular Theory, Non-Commutative Geometry and Quantum Gravity

This paper contains the first written exposition of some ideas (announced in a previous survey) on an approach to quantum gravity based on Tomita-Takesaki modular theory and A. Connes non-commutative geometry aiming at the reconstruction of spectral geometries from an operational formalism of states and categories of observables in a covariant theory. Care has been taken to provide a coverage of the relevant background on modular theory, its applications in non-commutative geometry and physics and to the detailed discussion of the main foundational issues raised by the proposal.
