Proof Methods in Random Matrix Theory

In this survey article, we give an introduction to two methods of proof in random matrix theory: The method of moments and the Stieltjes transform method. We thoroughly develop these methods and apply them to show both the semicircle law and the Marchenko-Pastur law for random matrices with independent entries. The material is presented in a pedagogical manner and is suitable for anyone who has followed a course in measure-theoretic probability theory.

Random Band and Block Matrices with Correlated Entries

In this paper, we derive limit laws for the empirical spectral distributions of random band and block matrices with correlated entries. In the first part of the paper, we study band matrices with approximately uncorrelated entries. We strengthen previously obtained results while requiring weaker assumptions, which is made possible by a refined application of the method of moments. In the second part of the paper, we introduce a new two-layered correlation structure we call SSB-HKW correlated, which enables the study of structured random matrices with correlated entries. Our results include semicircle laws in probability and almost surely, but we also obtain other limiting spectral distributions depending on the conditions. Simple necessary and sufficient conditions for the limit law to be the semicircle are provided. Our findings strengthen and extend many results already known.

The Central Limit Theorem for Weakly Dependent Random Variables by the Moment Method

In this paper, we derive a central limit theorem for collections of weakly correlated random variables indexed by discrete metric spaces, where the correlation decays in the distance of the indices. The correlation structure we study depends solely on the separability of mixed moments. Our investigation yields a new proof for the CLT for $α$-mixing random variables, but also non-$α$-mixing random variables fit within our framework, such as MA($\infty$) processes. In particular, our results can be applied to ARMA($p,q$) process with independent white noise.

Average Weights and Power in Weighted Voting Games

We investigate a class of weighted voting games for which weights are randomly distributed over the standard probability simplex. We provide close-formed formulae for the expectation and density of the distribution of weight of the $k$-th largest player under the uniform distribution. We analyze the average voting power of the $k$-th largest player and its dependence on the quota, obtaining analytical and numerical results for small values of $n$ and a general theorem about the functional form of the relation between the average Penrose--Banzhaf power index and the quota for the uniform measure on the simplex. We also analyze the power of a collectivity to act (Coleman efficiency index) of random weighted voting games, obtaining analytical upper bounds therefor.

Interval Type Local Limit Theorems for Lattice Type Random Variables and Distributions

In this paper, we propose a new interpretation of local limit theorems for univariate and multivariate distributions on lattices. We show that - given a local limit theorem in the standard sense - the distributions are approximated well by the limit distribution, uniformly on intervals of possibly decaying length. We identify the maximally allowable decay speed of the interval lengths. Further, we show that for continuous distributions, the interval type local law holds without any decay speed restrictions on the interval lengths. We show that various examples fit within this framework, such as standardized sums of i.i.d. random vectors or correlated random vectors induced by multidimensional spin models from statistical mechanics.

Local Central Limit Theorem for Multi-Group Curie-Weiss Models

We define a multi-group version of the mean-field spin model, also called Curie-Weiss model. It is known that, in the high temperature regime of this model, a central limit theorem holds for the vector of suitably scaled group magnetisations, that is the sum of spins belonging to each group. In this article, we prove a local central limit theorem for the group magnetisations in the high temperature regime.

Quantum Lattice Wave Guides with Randomness -- Localisation and Delocalisation

In this paper we consider Schrödinger operators on $M \times \mathbb{Z}^{d_2}$, with $M=\{M_{1}, \ldots, M_{2}\}^{d_1}$ (`quantum wave guides') with a `$Γ$-trimmed' random potential, namely a potential which vanishes outside a subset $Γ$ which is periodic with respect to a sub lattice. We prove that (under appropriate assumptions) for strong disorder these operators have \emph{pure point spectrum } outside the set $Σ_{0}=σ(H_{0,Γ^{c}})$ where $H_{0,Γ^{c}} $ is the free (discrete) Laplacian on the complement $Γ^{c} $ of $Γ$. We also prove that the operators have some \emph{absolutely continuous spectrum} in an energy region $\mathcal{E}\subsetΣ_{0}$. Consequently, there is a mobility edge for such models. We also consider the case $-M_{1}=M_{2}=\infty$, i.~e.~ $Γ$-trimmed operators on $\mathbb{Z}^{d}=\mathbb{Z}^{d_1}\times\mathbb{Z}^{d_2}$. Again, we prove localisation outside $Σ_{0} $ by showing exponential decay of the Green function $G_{E+iη}(x,y) $ uniformly in $η>0 $. For \emph{all} energies $E\in\mathcal{E}$ we prove that the Green's function $G_{E+iη} $ is \emph{not} (uniformly) in $\ell^{1}$ as $η$ approaches $0$. This implies that neither the fractional moment method nor multi scale analysis \emph{can} be applied here.

Two Groups in a Curie-Weiss Model with Heterogeneous Coupling

We discuss a Curie-Weiss model with two groups with different coupling constants within and between groups. For the total magnetisations in each group, we show bivariate laws of large numbers and a central limit theorem which is valid in the high temperature regime. In the critical regime, the total magnetisation normalised by $N^{3/4}$ converges to a non-trivial distribution which is not Gaussian, just as in the single-group Curie-Weiss model. Finally, we prove a kind of a `law of large numbers' in the low temperature regime, more precisely we prove that the empirical magnetisation converges in distribution to a mixture of two Dirac measures.

Critical Regime in a Curie-Weiss Model with two Groups and Heterogeneous Coupling

We discuss a Curie-Weiss model with two groups in the critical regime. This is the region where the central limit theorem does not hold any more but the mean magnetization still goes to zero as the number of spins grows. We show that the total magnetization normalized by $N^{3/4}$ converges to a non-trivial distribution which is not Gaussian, just as in the single-group Curie-Weiss model.

Random matrices with exchangeable entries

We consider ensembles of real symmetric band matrices with entries drawn from an infinite sequence of exchangeable random variables, as far as the symmetry of the matrices permits. In general the entries of the upper triangular parts of these matrices are correlated and no smallness or sparseness of these correlations is assumed. It is shown that the eigenvalue distribution measures still converge to a semicircle but with random scaling. We also investigate the asymptotic behavior of the corresponding $\ell_2$-operator norms. The key to our analysis is a generalisation of a classic result by de Finetti that allows to represent the underlying probability spaces as averages of Wigner band ensembles with entries that are not necessarily centred. Some of our results appear to be new even for such Wigner band matrices.

Sixty Years of Moments for Random Matrices

This is an elementary review, aimed at non-specialists, of results that have been obtained for the limiting distribution of eigenvalues and for the operator norms of real symmetric random matrices via the method of moments. This method goes back to a remarkable argument of Eugen Wigner some sixty years ago which works best for independent matrix entries, as far as symmetry permits, that are all centered and have the same variance. We then discuss variations of this classical result for ensembles for which the variance may depend on the distance of the matrix entry to the diagonal, including in particular the case of band random matrices, and/or for which the required independence of the matrix entries is replaced by some weaker condition. This includes results on ensembles with entries from Curie-Weiss random variables or from sequences of exchangeable random variables that have been obtained quite recently.

Semicircle law for a matrix ensemble with dependent entries

We study ensembles of random symmetric matrices whose entries exhibit certain correlations. Examples are distributions of Curie-Weiss-type. We provide a criterion on the correlations ensuring the validity of Wigner's semicircle law for the eigenvalue distribution measure. In case of Curie-Weiss distributions this criterion applies above the critical temperature (i.e. $β<1$). We also investigate the largest eigenvalue of certain ensembles of Curie-Weiss type and find a transition in its behavior at the critical temperature.

Lifshitz tails for a percolation model in the continuum

In this paper we study Lifshitz tails for continuous Laplacian in a continuous site percolation situation. By this we mean that we delete a random set $Γ_ω$ from $IR^d$ and consider the Dirichlet or Neumann Laplacian on $D=IR^d\setminusΓ_ω$. We prove that the integrated density of states exhibits Lifshitz behavior at the bottom of the spectrum when we consider Dirichlet boundary conditions, while when we consider Neumann boundary conditions, it is bounded from below by a van Hove behavior. The Lifshitz tails are proven independently of the percolation probability, whereas for the van Hove case we need some assumption on the volume of the sets taken out as well as on the percolation probability.

The fate of the square root law for correlated voting

We consider two-tier voting system and try to determine optimal weights for a fair representation in such systems. A prominent example of such a voting system is the Council of Ministers of the European Union. Under the assumption of independence of the voters, the square root law gives a fair distribution of power (based on the Penrose-Banzhaf power index) and a fair distribution of weights (based on the concept of the majority deficit), both given in the book by Felsenthal and Machover. In this paper, special emphasis is given to the case of correlated voters. The cooperative behaviour of the voters is modeled by suitable adoptions of spin systems known from statistical physics. Under certain assumptions we are able to compute the optimal weights as well as the average deviation of the council's vote from the public vote which we call the democracy deficit.

Random Block Operators

We study fundamental spectral properties of random block operators that are common in the physical modelling of mesoscopic disordered systems such as dirty superconductors. Our results include ergodic properties, the location of the spectrum, existence and regularity of the integrated density of states, as well as Lifshits tails. Special attention is paid to the peculiarities arising from the block structure such as the occurrence of a robust gap in the middle of the spectrum. Without randomness in the off-diagonal blocks the density of states typically exhibits an inverse square-root singularity at the edges of the gap. In the presence of randomness we establish a Wegner estimate that is valid at all energies. It implies that the singularities are smeared out by randomness, and the density of states is bounded. We also show Lifshits tails at these band edges. Technically, one has to cope with a non-monotone dependence on the random couplings.

Lifshitz tails for spectra of Erdős--Rényi random graphs

We consider the discrete Laplace operator $Δ^{(N)}$ on Erdős--Rényi random graphs with $N$ vertices and edge probability $p/N$. We are interested in the limiting spectral properties of $Δ^{(N)}$ as $N\to\infty$ in the subcritical regime $0<p<1$ where no giant cluster emerges. We prove that in this limit the expectation value of the integrated density of states of $Δ^{(N)}$ exhibits a Lifshitz-tail behavior at the lower spectral edge E=0.

The Fate of Lifshitz Tails in Magnetic Fields

We investigate the integrated density of states of the Schrödinger operator in the Euclidean plane with a perpendicular constant magnetic field and a random potential. For a Poisson random potential with a non-negative algebraically decaying single-impurity potential we prove that the leading asymptotic behaviour for small energies is always given by the corresponding classical result in contrast to the case of vanishing magnetic field. We also show that the integrated density of states of the operator restricted to the eigenspace of any Landau level exhibits the same behaviour. For the lowest Landau level, this is in sharp contrast to the case of a Poisson random potential with a delta-function impurity potential.
