Dynamic quantum-enhanced sensing without entanglement in central spin systems

We propose a dynamic quantum sensing scheme by using a quantum many-spin system composed of a central spin interacting with many surrounding spins. Starting from a generalized Ising ring model, we investigate the error propagation formula of the central spin and it indicates that Heisenberg scaling can be reached while the probe state only needs to be a product state. Particularly, we derive an analytical form of the dynamic quantum Fisher information in a limit case, which explicitly exhibits the Heisenberg scaling. By comparing with numerical results, we demonstrate that the general case can be well approximated by the analytical result when the coupling strength among the surrounding spins is much weaker than the coupling strength between the central and surrounding spins. This analytic result guides us to find the appropriate probe state and the proper measurement time, to achieve the Heisenberg scaling in realistic situations. Furthermore, we investigate various effects which are important in practical quantum systems, including the central spin Zeeman term, the anisotropy of the hyperfine interaction and the inhomogeneity of the hyperfine coupling strength. Our result indicates that the dynamic quantum-enhanced sensing scheme seems feasible in realistic quantum central spin systems, like semiconductor quantum dots.

Quantum memory assisted precision rotation sensing

We propose to implement a solid-state rotation sensor by employing a many-body quantum spin system which takes the advantages of the easy controllability of the electron spin and the robustness provided by the collective nuclear spin state. The sensor consists of a central electron spin coupled to many surrounding nuclear spins. Previously, this central spin system has been suggested to realize a quantum memory. Here, we further utilize the collective nuclear spins, which store a certain quantum state, to detect the macroscopic rotation. Different from other nuclear spin-based gyroscopes, our proposal does not directly manipulate nuclear spins via nuclear magnetic resonance technique. We analytically and numerically investigate the effects of partial nuclear polarization and decoherence on the sensitivity. We also briefly introduce the procedure to generate entanglement between nuclear spins through the quantum memory technique and to utilize this entanglement to enhance the sensing performance. Our proposal paves the way to the experimental realization of a compact solid-state, full-electrical and spin-based gyroscope.

A Neural Autoregressive Approach to Collaborative Filtering

This paper proposes CF-NADE, a neural autoregressive architecture for collaborative filtering (CF) tasks, which is inspired by the Restricted Boltzmann Machine (RBM) based CF model and the Neural Autoregressive Distribution Estimator (NADE). We first describe the basic CF-NADE model for CF tasks. Then we propose to improve the model by sharing parameters between different ratings. A factored version of CF-NADE is also proposed for better scalability. Furthermore, we take the ordinal nature of the preferences into consideration and propose an ordinal cost to optimize CF-NADE, which shows superior performance. Finally, CF-NADE can be extended to a deep model, with only moderately increased computational complexity. Experimental results show that CF-NADE with a single hidden layer beats all previous state-of-the-art methods on MovieLens 1M, MovieLens 10M, and Netflix datasets, and adding more hidden layers can further improve the performance.

High-fidelity quantum memory utilizing inhomogeneous nuclear polarization in a quantum dot

We numerically investigate the encoding and retrieval processes for a quantum memory realized in a semiconductor quantum dot, by focusing on the effect of inhomogeneously polarized nuclear spins whose polarization depends on the local hyperfine coupling strength. We find that the performance of the quantum memory is significantly improved by the inhomogeneous nuclear polarization, as compared to the homogeneous one. Moreover, the narrower the nuclear polarization distribution is, the better the performance of the quantum memory is. We ascribe the performance improvement to the full harnessing of the highly polarized and strongly coupled nuclear spins, by carefully studying the entropy change of individual nuclear spins during encoding process. Our results shed new light on the implementation of a quantum memory in a quantum dot.

Inhomogeneous dynamic nuclear polarization and suppression of electron-polarization decay in a quantum dot

We investigate the dynamic nuclear polarization process by frequently injecting polarized electron spins into a quantum dot. Due to the suppression of the direct dipolar and indirect electron-mediated nuclear spin interactions, by the frequently injected electron spins, the analytical predictions under the independent spin approximation agree well with quantum numerical simulations. Our results show that the acquired nuclear polarization is highly inhomogeneous, proportional to the square of the local electron-nuclear hyperfine interaction constant, if the injection frequency is high. Utilizing the inhomogeneously polarized nuclear spins as an initial state, we further show that the electron-polarization decay time can be extended 100 times even at a relatively low nuclear polarization (<20%), without much suppression of the fluctuation of the Overhauser field. Our results lay the foundation for future investigations of the effect of DNP in more complex spin systems, such as double quantum dots and nitrogen vacancy centers in diamonds.

Pure Price of Anarchy for Generalized Second Price Auction

The Generalized Second Price auction (GSP) has been widely used by search engines to sell ad slots. Previous studies have shown that the pure Price Of Anarchy (POA) of GSP is 1.25 when there are two ad slots and 1.259 when three ad slots. For the cases with more than three ad slots, however, only some untight upper bounds of the pure POA were obtained. In this work, we improve previous results in two aspects: (1) We prove that the pure POA for GSP is 1.259 when there are four ad slots, and (2) We show that the pure POA for GSP with more than four ad slots is also 1.259 given the bidders are ranked according to a particular permutation.
