Exploring the partonic collectivity in small systems at the LHC

Using the Hydro-Coal-Frag model that combines hydrodynamics at low pTp_{\rm T}, quark coalescence at intermediate pTp_{\rm T}, and the LBT transport model at high pTp_{\rm T}, we study the spectra and elliptic flow of identified hadrons in high multiplicity p--Pb and p--p collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In p--Pb collisions, the Hydro-Coal-Frag model gives a good description of the differential elliptic flow over the pTp_{\rm T} range from 0 to 6 GeV and the approximate number of constituent quark (NCQ) scaling at intermediate pTp_{\rm T}. Although Hydro-Coal-Frag model can also roughly describe the elliptic flow in high multiplicity p--p collisions with the quark coalescence process, the larger contribution from the string fragmentations leads to a notable violation of the NCQ scaling of v2v_2 at intermediate pTp_{\rm T} as observed in the experiment. Comparison runs of the Hydro-Frag model without the coalescence process demonstrate that regardless the parameter adjustments, the Hydro-Frag model cannot simultaneously describe the pTp_{\rm T} spectra and the elliptic flow of identified hadrons in either p--Pb collisions or p--p collisions. The calculations in this paper thus provide support for the existence of partonic degrees of freedom and the possible formation of the QGP in the small systems created at the LHC.

3D Multi-system Bayesian Calibration with Energy Conservation to Study Rapidity-dependent Dynamics of Nuclear Collisions

Considerable information about the early-stage dynamics of heavy-ion collisions is encoded in the rapidity dependence of measurements. To leverage the large amount of experimental data, we perform a systematic analysis using three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of multiple collision systems -- large and small, symmetric and asymmetric. Specifically, we perform fully 3D multi-stage hydrodynamic simulations initialized by a parameterized model for rapidity-dependent energy deposition, which we calibrate on the hadron multiplicity and anisotropic flow coefficients. We utilize Bayesian inference to constrain properties of the early- and late- time dynamics of the system, and highlight the impact of enforcing global energy conservation in our 3D model.

Bayesian inference of the fluctuating proton shape

Using Bayesian inference, we determine probabilistic constraints on the parameters describing the fluctuating structure of protons at high energy. We employ the color glass condensate framework supplemented with a model for the spatial structure of the proton, along with experimental data from the ZEUS and H1 Collaborations on coherent and incoherent diffractive J/ψ\mathrm{J}/ψ production in e+p collisions at HERA. This data is found to constrain most model parameters well. This work sets the stage for future global analyses, including experimental data from e+p, p+p, and p+A collisions, to constrain the fluctuating structure of nucleons along with properties of the final state.

Bayesian inference of the fluctuating proton shape in DIS and hadronic collisions

We determine the likelihood distribution for the model parameters describing the event-by-event fluctuating proton geometry at small xx by performing a Bayesian analysis within the Color Glass Condensate framework. The exclusive J/ψ\mathrm{J}/ψ production data from HERA is found to constrain the model parameters well, and we demonstrate that complementary constraints can be obtained from simulations of Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC.

From hydro to jet quenching, coalescence and hadron cascade: a coupled approach to solving the RAA⊗v2R_{AA}\otimes v_2 puzzle

Hydrodynamics and jet quenching are responsible for the elliptic flow v2v_2 and suppression of large transverse momentum (pTp_T) hadrons, respectively, two of the most important phenomena leading to the discovery of a strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. A consistent description of the hadron suppression factor RAAR_{AA} and v2v_2, especially at intermediate pTp_T, however, remains a challenge. We solve this long-standing RAA⊗v2R_{AA}\otimes v_2 puzzle by including quark coalescence for hadronization and final state hadron cascade in the coupled linear Boltzmann transport-hydro model that combines concurrent jet transport and hydrodynamic evolution of the bulk medium. We illustrate that quark coalescence and hadron cascade, two keys to solving the puzzle, also lead to a splitting of v2v_2 for pions, kaons and protons in the intermediate pTp_T region. We demonstrate for the first time that experimental data on RAAR_{AA}, v2v_2 and their hadron flavor dependence from low to intermediate and high pTp_T in high-energy heavy-ion collisions can be understood within this coupled framework.

U(1)Lμ−LτU(1)_{L_μ-L_τ} for Light Dark Matter, gμ−2g_μ-2, the 511511 keV excess and the Hubble Tension

In this paper we introduce a light Dirac particle ψψ as thermal dark matter candidate in a U(1)Lμ−LτU(1)_{L_μ-L_τ} model. Together with the new gauge boson XX, we find a possible parameter space with mX≃20m_X \simeq 20 MeV, U(1)Lμ−LτU(1)_{L_μ-L_τ} coupling gX≃5⋅10−4g_X \simeq 5 \cdot 10^{-4} and mψ≳mX/2m_ψ\gtrsim m_X/2 where the (g−2)μ(g-2)_μ anomaly, dark matter, the Hubble tension, and (part of) the excess of 511511 keV photons from the region near the galactic center can be explained simultaneously. This model is safe from current experimental and astrophysical constraints, but can be probed by the next generation of neutrino experiments as well as low-energy e+e−e^+e^- colliders.

Evolution of ΛΛ polarization in the hadronic phase of heavy-ion collisions

Using the AMPT + MUSIC+UrQMD hybrid model, we study the global and local spin polarizations of ΛΛ hyperons as functions of the freeze-out temperature of the spin degree of freedom in the hadronic phase of Au+Au collisions at sNN=19.6\sqrt{s_{NN}}=19.6 GeV. Including contributions from both the thermal vorticity and thermal shear of the hadronic matter, we find that, with the spin freeze-out temperature dropping from the hadronization temperature of 160 MeV to 110 MeV at the kinetic freeze-out, both the global and local spin polarizations of ΛΛ hyperons due to the thermal vorticity decrease by a factor of two, while those due to the thermal shear decrease quickly and become negligibly small at 140 MeV. Our results suggest the importance of understanding the dynamical evolution of the spin degree of freedom in the hadronic stage in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Number of constituent quark scaling of elliptic flows in high multiplicity p-Pb collisions at sNN=\sqrt{s_{NN}}= 5.02 TeV

We briefly summarize our recent study on the number of constituent quark (NCQ) scaling of hadron elliptic flows in high multiplicity p-Pb collisions at sNN=\sqrt{s_{NN}}= 5.02 TeV. With the inclusion of hadron production via the quark coalescence model at intermediate pTp_T, the viscous hydrodynamics at low pTp_T, and jet fragmentation at high pTp_T, our Hydro−Coal−FragHydro-Coal-Frag model provides a nice description of the pTp_T-spectra and differential elliptic flow v2(pT)v_2(p_T) of pions, kaons and protons over the pTp_T range from 0 to 6 GeV. Our results demonstrate that including the quark coalescence is essential for reproducing the observed approximate NCQ scaling of hadron v2v_2 at intermediate pTp_T in experiments, indicating strongly the existence of partonic degrees of freedom and the formation of quark-gluon plasma in high multiplicity p--Pb collisions at the LHC.

One fluid might not rule them all

In this proceeding, we present our recent investigations on hydrodynamic collectivity in high-multiplicity proton--proton collisions at s=\sqrt{s}= 13 TeV using the VISHNU hybrid model with different initial condition models, called HIJING, super-MC and TRENTo. We find that with carefully tuned parameters, hydrodynamic simulations can give reasonable descriptions of the measured two-particle correlations. However, multi-particle single and mixed harmonics cumulants can not be described by hydrodynamics with these three initial conditions, even for the signs in a few cases. Further studies show that the non-linear response plays an important role in the hydrodynamic expansion of the p--p systems. Such an effect can change c2{4}c_2\{4\} from a negative value in the initial state to a positive value in the final state. The failure of the hydrodynamic description of multi-particle cumulant triggers the questions on whether the hydrodynamics can rule all collision systems, including p--p collisions at the LHC.

Probing the partonic degrees of freedom in high multiplicity p-Pb collisions at sNN=\sqrt{s_{NN}}= 5.02 TeV

We investigate the role of partonic degrees of freedom in high multiplicity p-Pb collisions at sNN=\sqrt{s_{NN}}= 5.02 TeV carried out at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) by studying the production and collective flow of identified hadrons at intermediate pTp_T via the coalescence of soft and hard partons generated from viscous hydrodynamics (VISH2+1) and the energy loss model (LBT), respectively. We find that combining the intermediate pTp_T hadrons from the coalescence with the low pTp_T hadrons from hydrodynamics and high pTp_T hadrons from the jet fragmentation, our Hydro-Coal-Frag model provides a nice description of the measured pTp_T-spectra and the differential elliptic flow v2(pT)v_2(p_T) of pions, kaons and protons over the pTp_T range from 0 to 6 GeV. We further demonstrate the necessity of including the quark coalescence contribution to reproduce the experimentally observed approximate number of constituent quark scaling of hadron v2v_2 at intermediate pTp_T. Our results thus indicate the importance of partonic degrees of freedom and also hint at the possible formation of quark-gluon plasma in high multiplicity p+Pb collisions at the LHC.

Principal Component Analysis of collective flow in Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions

In this paper, we implement Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to study the single particle distributions generated from thousands of {\tt VISH2+1} hydrodynamic simulations with an aim to explore if a machine could directly discover flow from the huge amount of data without explicit instructions from human-beings. We found that the obtained PCA eigenvectors are similar to but not identical with the traditional Fourier bases. Correspondingly, the PCA defined flow harmonics vn′v_n^\prime are also similar to the traditional vnv_n for n=2n=2 and 3, but largely deviated from the Fourier ones for n≥4n\geq 4. A further study on the symmetric cumulants and the Pearson coefficients indicates that mode-coupling effects are reduced for these flow harmonics defined by PCA.
