Exploring the partonic collectivity in small systems at the LHC

Using the Hydro-Coal-Frag model that combines hydrodynamics at low $p_{\rm T}$, quark coalescence at intermediate $p_{\rm T}$, and the LBT transport model at high $p_{\rm T}$, we study the spectra and elliptic flow of identified hadrons in high multiplicity p--Pb and p--p collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In p--Pb collisions, the Hydro-Coal-Frag model gives a good description of the differential elliptic flow over the $p_{\rm T}$ range from 0 to 6 GeV and the approximate number of constituent quark (NCQ) scaling at intermediate $p_{\rm T}$. Although Hydro-Coal-Frag model can also roughly describe the elliptic flow in high multiplicity p--p collisions with the quark coalescence process, the larger contribution from the string fragmentations leads to a notable violation of the NCQ scaling of $v_2$ at intermediate $p_{\rm T}$ as observed in the experiment. Comparison runs of the Hydro-Frag model without the coalescence process demonstrate that regardless the parameter adjustments, the Hydro-Frag model cannot simultaneously describe the $p_{\rm T}$ spectra and the elliptic flow of identified hadrons in either p--Pb collisions or p--p collisions. The calculations in this paper thus provide support for the existence of partonic degrees of freedom and the possible formation of the QGP in the small systems created at the LHC.

Examination of background effects on light-nuclei yield ratio in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

The light-nuclei yield ratio is one of the candidates to probe the critical fluctuations of hot QCD matter. In this paper, we investigate the \textit{background effects}, namely the non-critical effects coming from the non-trivial thermal background, on the light-nuclei production within the framework of the coalescence model. Specifically, we analyze the impact of the equilibrium phase-space distribution function of nucleons, $f(\mathbf{r},\mathbf{p})$, on the light-nuclei yield ratio $N_tN_p/N_d^2$, where $N_t$, $N_p$, and $N_d$ denote triton, proton, and deuteron yields. By considering the characteristic function of the phase-space distribution, we systematically expand the yield of light nuclei of $A$-constituent nucleons, $N_A$, in terms of the \textit{phase-space cumulants}, $\langle\mathbf{r}^n\mathbf{p}^m\rangle_c$. We find that the cumulants up to the second-order are canceled out in the generalized ratio $N_p^{B-A} N_B^{A-1}/N_A^{B-1}$. This means that the dominant background effects including the fireball size, the kinetic freeze-out temperature, and the coordinate--momentum correlations caused by the radial expansion play an insignificant role in the yield ratio, which supports the yield ratio as a useful tool for the critical-point search. We also show several examples of background phase-space distributions for the qualitative illustration. The higher-order cumulants, which correspond to the non-Gaussian shape of the phase-space profile, play an important role in the variation of the yield ratio particularly for the smaller fireball sizes. Qualitatively, the spatial structure of the background decreases the yield ratio, and the azimuthal anisotropy $v_n$ increases it. The higher order of the azimuthal anisotropy causes a larger effect on the yield ratio. These results call for the comprehensive future studies of the yield ratio using sophisticated dynamical models.

A hydrodynamic study of hyperon spin polarization in relativistic heavy ion collisions

We perform a systematic study of the spin polarization of hyperons in heavy-ion collisions using the MUSIC hydrodynamic model with A Multi-Phase Transport (AMPT) pre-equilibrium dynamics. Our model calculations nicely describe the measured collision-energy, centrality, rapidity, and $p_T$ dependence of $Λ$ polarization. We also study and predict the global spin polarization of $Ξ^-$ and $Ω^-$ as a function of collision energy, which provides a baseline for the studies of the magnetic moment, spin, and mass dependence of the spin polarization. For the local spin polarization, we calculate the radial and azimuthal components of the transverse $Λ$ polarization and find specific modulating behavior which could reflect the circular vortical structure. However, our model fails to describe the azimuthal-angle dependence of the longitudinal and transverse $Λ$ polarization, which indicates that the hydrodynamic framework with the spin Cooper-Frye formula under the assumption of thermal equilibrium of spin degree of freedom needs to be improved.

Number of constituent quark scaling of elliptic flows in high multiplicity p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 5.02 TeV

We briefly summarize our recent study on the number of constituent quark (NCQ) scaling of hadron elliptic flows in high multiplicity p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 5.02 TeV. With the inclusion of hadron production via the quark coalescence model at intermediate $p_T$, the viscous hydrodynamics at low $p_T$, and jet fragmentation at high $p_T$, our $Hydro-Coal-Frag$ model provides a nice description of the $p_T$-spectra and differential elliptic flow $v_2(p_T)$ of pions, kaons and protons over the $p_T$ range from 0 to 6 GeV. Our results demonstrate that including the quark coalescence is essential for reproducing the observed approximate NCQ scaling of hadron $v_2$ at intermediate $p_T$ in experiments, indicating strongly the existence of partonic degrees of freedom and the formation of quark-gluon plasma in high multiplicity p--Pb collisions at the LHC.

One fluid might not rule them all

In this proceeding, we present our recent investigations on hydrodynamic collectivity in high-multiplicity proton--proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV using the VISHNU hybrid model with different initial condition models, called HIJING, super-MC and TRENTo. We find that with carefully tuned parameters, hydrodynamic simulations can give reasonable descriptions of the measured two-particle correlations. However, multi-particle single and mixed harmonics cumulants can not be described by hydrodynamics with these three initial conditions, even for the signs in a few cases. Further studies show that the non-linear response plays an important role in the hydrodynamic expansion of the p--p systems. Such an effect can change $c_2\{4\}$ from a negative value in the initial state to a positive value in the final state. The failure of the hydrodynamic description of multi-particle cumulant triggers the questions on whether the hydrodynamics can rule all collision systems, including p--p collisions at the LHC.

Probing the partonic degrees of freedom in high multiplicity p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 5.02 TeV

We investigate the role of partonic degrees of freedom in high multiplicity p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 5.02 TeV carried out at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) by studying the production and collective flow of identified hadrons at intermediate $p_T$ via the coalescence of soft and hard partons generated from viscous hydrodynamics (VISH2+1) and the energy loss model (LBT), respectively. We find that combining the intermediate $p_T$ hadrons from the coalescence with the low $p_T$ hadrons from hydrodynamics and high $p_T$ hadrons from the jet fragmentation, our Hydro-Coal-Frag model provides a nice description of the measured $p_T$-spectra and the differential elliptic flow $v_2(p_T)$ of pions, kaons and protons over the $p_T$ range from 0 to 6 GeV. We further demonstrate the necessity of including the quark coalescence contribution to reproduce the experimentally observed approximate number of constituent quark scaling of hadron $v_2$ at intermediate $p_T$. Our results thus indicate the importance of partonic degrees of freedom and also hint at the possible formation of quark-gluon plasma in high multiplicity p+Pb collisions at the LHC.

Robustness of principal component analysis on harmonic flow in heavy ion collisions

The principal component analysis (PCA), a mathematical tool commonly used in statistics, has recently been employed to interpret the $p_T$-dependent fluctuations of harmonic flow $v_n$ in terms of leading and subleading flow modes in heavy ion collisions. Using simulated data from AMPT and HIJING models, we show that the PCA modes are not fixed, but depend on the choice of the particle weight and the $p_T$ range. Furthermore, the shape of the leading mode is affected by the presence of non-flow correlations, and fake subleading mode may arise from the mixing of non-flow correlations with leading flow mode with a magnitude that could be larger than the genuine subleading flow mode. Therefore, the meaning of PCA modes and their relations to physical leading and subleading flow modes associated initial state eccentricities need to be further clarified/validated in realistic model simulations.

Principal Component Analysis of collective flow in Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions

In this paper, we implement Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to study the single particle distributions generated from thousands of {\tt VISH2+1} hydrodynamic simulations with an aim to explore if a machine could directly discover flow from the huge amount of data without explicit instructions from human-beings. We found that the obtained PCA eigenvectors are similar to but not identical with the traditional Fourier bases. Correspondingly, the PCA defined flow harmonics $v_n^\prime$ are also similar to the traditional $v_n$ for $n=2$ and 3, but largely deviated from the Fourier ones for $n\geq 4$. A further study on the symmetric cumulants and the Pearson coefficients indicates that mode-coupling effects are reduced for these flow harmonics defined by PCA.

Correlated fluctuations near the QCD critical point

In this paper, we introduce a freeze-out scheme for the dynamical models near the QCD critical point through coupling the decoupled classical particles with the order parameter field. With a modified distribution function that satisfies specific static fluctuations, we calculate the correlated fluctuations of net protons on the hydrodynamic freeze-out surface. A comparison with recent STAR data shows that our model calculations could roughly reproduce energy dependent cumulant $C_4$ and $κσ^2$ of net protons through tuning the related parameters. However, the calculated $C_2$ and $C_3$ with both Poisson and Binomial baselines are always above the experimental data due to the positive contributions from the static critical fluctuations. In order to qualitatively and quantitatively describe the experimental data, the dynamical critical fluctuations and more realistic non-critical fluctuation baselines should be investigated in the near future.

High order flow harmonics of identified hadrons in 2.76 A TeV Pb+Pb collisions

Using iEBE-VISHNU hybrid model with the AMPT initial conditions, we study the higher order flow harmonics of identified hadrons in 2.76 A TeV Pb+Pb collisions. Comparison with the recent ALICE measurements at 20-30\% centrality shows that our calculations nicely describe the data below 2 GeV, especially for the $v_2$, $v_3$ and $v_4$ mass-orderings among pions, kaons and protons. We also extended the calculations to other centrality bins, which presents similar mass-ordering patterns for these flow harmonics as the ones observed at 20-30\% centrality. In the later part of this article, we explore the development of $v_n$ mass ordering/splitting during the hadronic evolution through the comparison runs from iEBE-VISHNU hybrid model and pure hydrodynamics with different decoupling temperatures.

Multiplicity fluctuations of net protons on the hydrodynamic freeze-out surface

This proceeding briefly summarizes our recent work on calculating the correlated fluctuations of net protons on the hydrodynamic freeze-out surface near the QCD critical point. For both Poisson and Binomial baselines, our calculations could roughly reproduce the energy dependent cumulant $C_4$ and $κσ^2$ of net protons, but always over-predict $C_2$ and $C_3$ due to the positive contributions from the static critical fluctuations.

Static critical fluctuations on the freeze-out surface

In this proceeding, we summarize the main results of our recent paper, which introduces a freeze-out scheme to the dynamical models near the QCD critical point. Within such framework of static critical fluctuations, the Beam Energy Scan (BES) data of $C_4$ and $κσ^2$ for net protons within different $p_T$ ranges can be roughly described. Besides, the momentum acceptance dependence of higher cumulants at lower collision energies can also be qualitatively described. However, $C_2$ and $C_3$ are always over-predicted due to the positive static critical fluctuations.

A hybrid model approach for strange and multi-strange hadrons in 2.76 A TeV Pb+Pb collisions

Using the VISHNU hybrid model, we calculate the multiplicity, spectra, and elliptic flow of $Λ$, $Ξ$ and $Ω$ in 2.76 A TeV Pb+Pb collisions. Comparisons between our calculations and the ALICE measurements show that the model generally describes the soft hadron data of these strange and multi-strange hadrons at several centrality bins. Mass ordering of elliptic flow among $π$, K, p, $Λ$, $Ξ$ and $Ω$ has also been studied and discussed. With a nice description of the particle yields, we explore chemical and thermal freeze-out of various hadrons species at the LHC within the framework of the VISHNU hybrid model.

Chemical and thermal freeze-out of identified hadrons at the LHC

This proceeding briefly summarizes our recent VISHNU hybrid model investigations on the chemical and thermal freeze-out of various hadrons species in 2.76 A TeV Pb+Pb collisions. Detailed analysis on the evolution of particle yields and the last elastic collisions distributions during the hadronic evolution reveals that the two multi-strange hadrons, $Ξ$ and $Ω$, experience early chemical and thermal freeze-out when compared with other hadron species.

Hadronic "flow" in p--Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider?

Using the Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) model, we investigate azimuthal correlations in p--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}=5.02$ TeV. Comparison with the experimental data shows that UrQMD can not reproduce the multiplicity dependence of 2- and 4-particle cumulants, especially the transition from positive to negative values of $c_{2}\{4\}$ in high multiplicity events, which has been taken as experimental evidence of collectivity in p--Pb collisions. Meanwhile, UrQMD can not qualitatively describe the differential elliptic flow, $v_{2}(p_{\rm T})$, of all charged hadrons at various multiplicity classes. These discrepancies show that the simulated hadronic p--Pb systems can not generate enough collective flow as observed in experiment, the associated hadron emissions are largely influenced by non-flow effects. However, the characteristic $v_{2}(p_{\rm T})$ mass-ordering of pions, kaons and protons is observed in UrQMD, which is the consequence of hadronic interactions and not necessarily associated with strong fluid-like expansions.

Is hadronic flow produced in p--Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider?

Using the Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics ({\tt UrQMD}) model, we investigate the azimuthal correlations in p--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}}=5.02$ TeV. It is shown that the simulated hadronic p--Pb system can not generate the collective flow signatures, but mainly behaves as a non-flow dominant system. However, the characteristic $v_{2}(p_{\rm T})$ mass-ordering of pions, kaons and protons is observed in {\tt UrQMD} simulations, which is the consequence of hadronic interactions and not necessarily associated with strong fluid-like expansions.

Physics perspectives of heavy-ion collisions at very high energy

Heavy-ion collisions at very high colliding energies are expected to produce a quark-gluon plasma (QGP) at the highest temperature obtainable in a laboratory setting. Experimental studies of these reactions can provide an unprecedented range of information on properties of the QGP at high temperatures. We report theoretical investigations of the physics perspectives of heavy-ion collisions at a future high-energy collider. These include initial parton production, collective expansion of the dense medium, jet quenching, heavy-quark transport, dissociation and regeneration of quarkonia, photon and dilepton production. We illustrate the potential of future experimental studies of the initial particle production and formation of QGP at the highest temperature to provide constraints on properties of strongly interaction matter.

The iEBE-VISHNU code package for relativistic heavy-ion collisions

The iEBE-VISHNU code package performs event-by-event simulations for relativistic heavy-ion collisions using a hybrid approach based on (2+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamics coupled to a hadronic cascade model. We present the detailed model implementation, accompanied by some numerical code tests for the package. iEBE-VISHNU forms the core of a general theoretical framework for model-data comparisons through large scale Monte-Carlo simulations. A numerical interface between the hydrodynamically evolving medium and thermal photon radiation is also discussed. This interface is more generally designed for calculations of all kinds of rare probes that are coupled to the temperature and flow velocity evolution of the bulk medium, such as jet energy loss and heavy quark diffusion.

The elliptic flow v_2 for strange and multi-strange bayons in 2.76 A TeV Pb+Pb collisions is investigated with VISHNU hybrid model that connects 2+1-d viscous hydrodynamics with a hadron cascade model. It is found that VISHNU nicely describes v_2(p_T) data for Λ, Ξand Ωat various centralities. Comparing with the ALICE data, it roughly reproduces the mass-ordering of v_2 among π, K, p, Ξand Ωwithin current statistics, but gives an inverse v_2 mass-ordering between p and Λ.

Spectra and elliptic flow for identified hadrons in 2.76 A TeV Pb+Pb collisions

Using the VISHNU hybrid model that couples (2+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamics to a microscopic hadronic transport model, we calculate the multiplicity, p_T spectra and elliptic flow for pions, kaons, and protons in 2.76 A TeV Pb+Pb collisions, using MC-KLN initializations with smoothed initial conditions, obtained by averaging over a large number of events. The results from our calculations are compared to data from the ALICE collaboration, showing nice agreement over several centrality bins. Using the same inputs, we predict the p_T spectra and elliptic flow for phi mesons and explore its flow development in the strong and weak coupling limits through hydrodynamic calculations with different decoupling temperatures. In addition we study the influence of baryon and anti-baryon annihilation processes on common observables and demonstrate that by including annihilation processes below a switching temperature of 165 MeV, VISHNU provides a good description of the multiplicity and p_T spectra for pions, kaons and protons measured by PHENIX and ALICE at both RHIC and the LHC.

200 A GeV Au+Au collisions serve a nearly perfect quark-gluon liquid

The specific shear viscosity (eta/s)_QGP of a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) at temperatures T_c < T < 2T_c is extracted from the centrality dependence of the eccentricity-scaled elliptic flow measured in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Coupling viscous fluid dynamics for the QGP with a microscopic transport model for hadronic freeze-out we find that the eccentricity-scaled elliptic flow is a universal function of charged multiplicity per unit overlap area, (1/S)(dN_ch/dy), that depends only on the viscosity but not on the model used for computing the initial fireball eccentricity. Comparing with measurements we find 1 < (4pi)(eta/s)_QGP < 2.5 where the uncertainty range is dominated by model uncertainties for the eccentricity values used to normalize the measured elliptic flow.

Elliptic flow in 200 A GeV Au+Au collisions and 2.76 A TeV Pb+Pb collisions: insights from viscous hydrodynamics + hadron cascade hybrid model

Using the newly developed hybrid model VISHNU which connects viscous hydrodynamics with a hadron cascade model, we study the differential and integrated elliptic flow v_2 at different centrality bins for 200 A GeV Au+Au collisions and 2.76 A TeV Pb+Pb collisions. We find that the average Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) specific shear viscosity eta/s slightly increases from Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) to Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies. However, a further study assuming different temperature dependencies for (eta/s)_QGP shows that one cannot uniquely constrain the form of (eta/s)_QGP(T) by fitting the spectra and v_2 alone. Based on our current understanding, the question on whether the QGP fluid is more viscous or more perfect in the temperature regime reached by LHC energies is still open.

Hadron spectra and elliptic flow for 200 A GeV Au+Au collisions from viscous hydrodynamics coupled to a Boltzmann cascade

It is shown that the recently developed hybrid code VISHNU, which couples a relativistic viscous fluid dynamical description of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) with a microscopic Boltzmann cascade for the late hadronic rescattering stage, yields an excellent description of charged and identified hadron spectra and elliptic flow measured in 200 A GeV Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC). Using initial conditions that incorporate event-by-event fluctuations in the initial shape and orientation of the collision fireball and values eta/s for the specific shear viscosity of the quark-gluon plasma that were recently extracted from the measured centrality dependence of the eccentricity-scaled, p_T-integrated charged hadron elliptic flow, we obtain universally good agreement between theory and experiment for the p_T-spectra and differential elliptic flow v_2(p_T) for both pions and protons at all collision centralities.

Radial and elliptic flow in Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider from viscous hydrodynamic

A comprehensive viscous hydrodynamic fit of spectra and elliptic flow for charged hadrons and identified pions and protons from Au+Au collisions of all centralities measured at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider is performed and used as the basis for predicting the analogous observables for Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider at sqrt(s)=2.76 and 5.5 A TeV. Comparison with recent measurements of the elliptic flow of charged hadrons by the ALICE experiment shows that the model slightly over-predicts the data if the same (constant) specific shear viscosity eta/s is assumed at both collision energies. In spite of differences in our assumptions for the equation of state, the freeze-out temperature, the chemical composition at freeze-out, and the starting time for the hydrodynamic evolution, our results agree remarkably well with those of Luzum [M. Luzum, Phys. Rev. C 83, 044911 (2011)], indicating robustness of the hydrodynamic model extrapolations. Future measurements of the centrality and transverse momentum dependence of spectra and elliptic flow for identified hadrons predicted here will further test the model and shed light on possible variations of the quark-gluon transport coefficients between RHIC and LHC energies.

The QGP shear viscosity -- elusive goal or just around the corner?

With the new viscous hydrodynamic + hadron cascade hybrid code VISHNU, a rather precise (O(25%)) extraction of the QGP shear viscosity (eta/s)_QGP from heavy-ion elliptic flow data is possible if the initial eccentricity of the collision fireball is known with <5% accuracy. At this point, eccentricities from initial state models differ by up to 20%, leading to an O(100%) uncertainty for (eta/s)_QGP. It is shown that a simultaneous comparison of elliptic and triangular flow, v_2 and v_3, puts strong constraints on initial state models and can largely eliminate the present uncertainty in (eta/s)_QGP. The variation of the differential elliptic flow v_2(p_T) for identified hadrons between RHIC and LHC energies provides additional tests of the evolution model.

The viscosity of quark-gluon plasma at RHIC and the LHC

The specific shear viscosity (eta/s)_QGP of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) can be extracted from elliptic flow data in heavy-ion collisions by comparing them with the dynamical model VISHNU which couples a viscous fluid dynamic description of the QGP with a microscopic kinetic description of the late hadronic rescattering and freeze-out stage. A robust method for fixing (eta/s)_QGP from the collision centrality dependence of the eccentricity-scaled charged hadron elliptic flow is presented. The systematic uncertainties associated with this extraction method are discussed, with specific attention to our presently restricted knowledge of initial conditions. With the (eta/s)_QGP extracted in this way, VISHNU yields an excellent description of all soft-hadron data from Au+Au collisions at top RHIC energy. Extrapolations to Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC, using both a purely hydrodynamic approach and VISHNU, are presented and compared with recent experimental results from the ALICE Collaboration. The LHC data are again well described by VISHNU, with the same (eta/s)_QGP value as at RHIC energies.

Viscous QCD matter in a hybrid hydrodynamic+Boltzmann approach

A hybrid transport approach for the bulk evolution of viscous QCD matter produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions is presented. The expansion of the dense deconfined phase of the reaction is modeled with viscous hydrodynamics while the dilute late hadron gas stage is described microscopically by the Boltzmann equation. The advantages of such a hybrid approach lie in the improved capability of handling large dissipative corrections in the late dilute phase of the reaction, including a realistic treatment of the non-equilibrium hadronic chemistry and kinetic freeze-out. By varying the switching temperature at which the hydrodynamic output is converted to particles for further propagation with the Boltzmann cascade we test the ability of the macroscopic hydrodynamic approach to emulate the microscopic evolution during the hadronic stage and extract the temperature dependence of the effective shear viscosity of the hadron resonance gas produced in the collision. We find that the extracted values depend on the prior hydrodynamic history and hence do not represent fundamental transport properties of the hadron resonance gas. We conclude that viscous fluid dynamics does not provide a faithful description of hadron resonance gas dynamics with predictive power, and that both components of the hybrid approach are needed for a quantitative description of the fireball expansion and its freeze-out.

Systematic parameter study of hadron spectra and elliptic flow from viscous hydrodynamic simulations of Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV

Using the (2+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamic code VISH2+1, we present systematic studies of the dependence of pion and proton transverse momentum spectra and their elliptic flow in 200 A GeV Au+Au collisions on the parameters of the hydrodynamic model (thermalization time, initial entropy density distribution, decoupling temperature, equation of state, and specific shear viscosity eta/s). We identify a tension between the slope of the proton spectra, which (within hydrodynamic simulations that assume a constant shear viscosity to entropy density ratio) prefer larger eta/s values, and the slope of the p_T-dependence of charged hadron elliptic flow, which prefers smaller values of eta/s. Changing other model parameters does not appear to permit dissolution of this tension

Extracting the QGP viscosity from RHIC data -- a status report from viscous hydrodynamics

We report recent progress on causal viscous hydrodynamics for relativistic heavy ion collisions. For fixed specific shear viscosity eta/s, uncertainties in the elliptic flow arising from initial conditions, equation of state, bulk viscosity and numerical viscosity, and the treatment of the highly viscous hadronic stage and freeze-out procedure are analysed. A comparison of current viscous hydrodynamic results with experimental data yields a robust upper limit eta/s < 5/(4pi).

Interplay of shear and bulk viscosity in generating flow in heavy-ion collisions

We perform viscous hydrodynamic calculations in 2+1 dimensions to investigate the influence of bulk viscosity on the viscous suppression of elliptic flow in non-central heavy-ion collisions at RHIC energies. Bulk and shear viscous effects on the evolution of radial and elliptic flow are studied with different model assumptions for the transport coefficients. We find that the temperature dependence of the relaxation time for the bulk viscous pressure, especially its critical slowing down near the quark-hadron phase transition at T_c, partially offsets effects from the strong growth of the bulk viscosity itself near T_c, and that even small values of the specific shear viscosity eta/s of the fireball matter can be extracted without large uncertainties from poorly controlled bulk viscous effects.

Causal viscous hydrodynamics in 2+1 dimensions for relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We explore the effects of shear viscosity on the hydrodynamic evolution and final hadron spectra of Cu+Cu collisions at ultrarelativistic collision energies, using the newly developed (2+1)-dimensional viscous hydrodynamic code VISH2+1. Based on the causal Israel-Stewart formalism, this code describes the transverse evolution of longitudinally boost-invariant systems without azimuthal symmetry around the beam direction. Shear viscosity is shown to decelerate the longitudinal and accelerate the transverse hydrodynamic expansion. For fixed initial conditions, this leads to a longer quark-gluon plasma (QGP) lifetime, larger radial flow in the final state, and flatter transverse momentum spectra for the emitted hadrons compared to ideal fluid dynamic simulations. We find that the elliptic flow coefficient v_2 is particularly sensitive to shear viscosity: even the lowest value allowed by the AdS/CFT conjecture, eta/s=1/4pi, suppresses v_2 enough to have significant consequences for the phenomenology of heavy-ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. A comparison between our numerical results and earlier analytic estimates of viscous effects within a blast-wave model parametrization of the expanding fireball at freeze-out reveals that the full dynamical theory leads to much tighter constraints for the specific shear viscosity eta/s, thereby supporting the notion that the quark-gluon plasma created at RHIC exhibits almost ``perfect fluidity''.
