Observation of Non-Abelian Thouless Pump

Thouless pump is a one-dimensional dynamic topological effect that stems from the same topological mechanism as the renowned two-dimensional Chern insulators, with one momentum dimension replaced by a time variant evolution parameter. The underlying physics is abelian, concerning topologies of individual bands. By introducing multi-band non-abelian topology into pumping, much richer physics is expected that goes beyond the abelian counterpart. Here we report the observation of a non-abelian Thouless pump in an acoustic waveguide array with judiciously engineered coupling configurations. The observed non-abelian effect originates from time-evolution of eigen-states in Z_3 pump cycles that traverse across several band degeneracies in the parameter space in a three-band system. Interestingly, the pump of the eigenstates exhibits non-commutativity, i.e. the final state depends critically on the order of the pumping paths. Our study paves ways for exploring and utilizing non-abelian dynamical effects in classical systems.

Singular points of polarizations in the momentum space of photonic crystal slabs

Bound states in the continuum (BICs), circularly polarized states (C points) and degenerate states are all of three types of singular points of polarization in the momentum space. For photonic crystal slabs (PhCSs) with linearly polarized far fields, BICs were found to be the centers of polarization vortices and attracted more attention in the previous studies. Here, we theoretically demonstrate that the far fields of PhCSs can exhibit remarkably diverse polarizations due to the robust existences of C points in the continuum. Only a pair of C points with identical handedness and opposite topological charge can be annihilated together. Continuously fine tuning of the structure parameters of PhCSs without breaking their symmetry, a pair of C points with identical topological charge and opposite handedness are able to merge into a BIC, then the BIC splits into C points again. Interestingly, a Dirac-degenerate BIC with one half of topological charge is observed when two pairs of C points with identical topological charge from the upper and lower band, respectively, simultaneously merge at the Dirac-degenerate point. The law of topological charge conservation is verified to play an important role in the evolutions and interconversions between different types of polarization singularities. Our findings might shed light on the origin of singular points of polarization, could open a gateway towards the applications of them in the generation and manipulation of vector beams.

Pseudospin induced chirality with Staggered Optical Graphene

Pseudospin plays a very important role in understanding various interesting physical phenomena associated with 2D materials such as graphene. It has been proposed that pseudospin is directly related to angular momentum, and it was recently experimentally demonstrated that orbit angular momentum is an intrinsic property of pseudospin in a photonic honeycomb lattice. However, in photonics, the interaction between spin and pseudospin for light has never been investigated. In this Letter, we propose that, in an optical analogue of staggered graphene, i.e. a photonic honeycomb lattice waveguide with in-plane inversion symmetry breaking, the pseudospin mode can strongly couple to the spin of an optical beam incident along certain directions. The spin-pseudospin coupling, caused by the spin-orbit conversion in the scattering process, induces a strong optical chiral effect for the transmitted optical beam. Spin-pseudospin coupling of light opens door to the design of pseudospin-mediated spin or valley selective photonic devices.

Measuring and estimating interaction between exposures on dichotomous outcome of a population

In observational studies for the interaction between exposures on dichotomous outcome of a population, one usually uses one parameter of a regression model to describe the interaction, leading to one measure of the interaction. In this article, we use the conditional risk of outcome given exposures and covariates to describe the interaction and obtain five different measures for the interaction in observational studies, i.e. difference between the marginal risk differences, ratio of the marginal risk ratios, ratio of the marginal odds ratios, ratio of the conditional risk ratios, and ratio of the conditional odds ratios. By using only one regression model for the conditional risk of outcome given exposures and covariates, we obtain the maximum-likelihood estimates of all these measures. By generating approximate distributions of the maximum-likelihood estimates of these measures, we obtain interval estimates of these measures. The method is presented by studying the interaction between a therapy and the environment on eradication of Helicobacter pylori among Vietnamese children.

Phenomenological modeling of Geometric Metasurfaces

Metasurfaces, with their superior capability in manipulating the optical wavefront at the subwavelength scale and low manufacturing complexity, have shown great potential for planar photonics and novel optical devices. However, vector field simulation of metasurfaces is so far limited to periodic-structured metasurfaces containing a small number of meta-atoms in the unit cell by using full-wave numerical methods. Here, we propose a general phenomenological method to analytically model metasurfaces made up of arbitrarily distributed meta-atoms based on the assumption that the meta-atoms possess localized resonances with Lorentz-Drude forms, whose exact form can be retrieved from the full wave simulation of a single element. Applied to phase modulated geometric metasurfaces, our analytical results show good agreement with full-wave numerical simulations. The proposed theory provides an efficient method to model and design optical devices based on metasurfaces.

Point and interval estimation of exposure effects and interaction between the exposures based on logistic model for observational studies

In observational studies with dichotomous outcome of a population, researchers need to present the effects of exposures and interaction between the exposures jointly in order to learn the relationship between the exposure effects and the interaction. In this article we study point and interval estimation of exposure effects and the interaction based on logistic model, where the exposure effects are measured by risk differences while the interaction is measured by difference between risk differences. Using approximate normal distribution of the maximum-likelihood (ML) estimate of the model parameters, we obtain approximate non-normal distribution of the ML estimate of the exposure effects and the interaction. Using the obtained distribution, we obtain point estimate and confidence region of (exposure effect, interaction) as well as point estimate and confidence interval of the interaction when the ML estimate of an exposure effect falls into specified range. Our maximum-likelihood-based approach provides a simple but reliable method of interval estimation of exposure effects and the interaction.

Circular Polarizer Realized by a Single Layer of Planar Chiral Metallic Nanostructure

As a basic optical element, circular polarizer plays significant roles in signal transmission, measurements and life science microscopy. Three-dimensional (3D) chiral structures have been thought to be necessary to realize circular polarizers. Here we demonstrate theoretically and experimentally for the first time that a high-efficiency circular polarizer could be realized by a single layer of planar 2D chiral structure. Our proposed circular polarizer is based on unidirectional polarization conversion instead of circular polarization stop bands. Since two-dimensional planar structures present obvious advantage for fabrication and integration on chip, the proposed circular polarizer is of great interest in integrated optics and microscopy. It provides a novel scheme to manipulate polarizations of light wave, as well as Terahertz wave and microwave.
