An Improved Level Set Method for Reachability Problems in Differential Games

This study focuses on reachability problems in differential games. An improved level set method for computing reachable tubes is proposed in this paper. The reachable tube is described as a sublevel set of a value function, which is the viscosity solution of a Hamilton-Jacobi equation with running cost. We generalize the concept of reachable tubes and propose a new class of reachable tubes, which are referred to as cost-limited one. In particular, a performance index can be specified for the system, and a cost-limited reachable tube is a set of initial states of the system's trajectories that can reach the target set before the performance index increases to a given admissible cost. Such a reachable tube can be obtained by specifying the corresponding running cost function for the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. Different non-zero sublevel sets of the viscosity solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation at a certain time point can be used to characterize the cost-limited reachable tubes with different admissible costs (or the reachable tubes with different time horizons), thus reducing the storage space consumption. Several examples are provided to illustrate the validity and accuracy of the proposed method.

Progressive Minimal Path Method with Embedded CNN

We propose Path-CNN, a method for the segmentation of centerlines of tubular structures by embedding convolutional neural networks (CNNs) into the progressive minimal path method. Minimal path methods are widely used for topology-aware centerline segmentation, but usually these methods rely on weak, hand-tuned image features. In contrast, CNNs use strong image features which are learned automatically from images. But CNNs usually do not take the topology of the results into account, and often require a large amount of annotations for training. We integrate CNNs into the minimal path method, so that both techniques benefit from each other: CNNs employ learned image features to improve the determination of minimal paths, while the minimal path method ensures the correct topology of the segmented centerlines, provides strong geometric priors to increase the performance of CNNs, and reduces the amount of annotations for the training of CNNs significantly. Our method has lower hardware requirements than many recent methods. Qualitative and quantitative comparison with other methods shows that Path-CNN achieves better performance, especially when dealing with tubular structures with complex shapes in challenging environments.

Collider search of light dark matter model with dark sector decay

We explore the possibility that the dark matter relic density is not produced by thermal mechanism directly, but by the decay of other heavier dark sector particles which on the other hand can be produced by the thermal freeze-out mechanism. Using a concrete model with a light dark matter from dark sector decay, we study the collider signature of the dark sector particles in association with Higgs production processes. We find that the future lepton colliders can be a better place to probe the signature of this kind of light dark matter model than the hadron collider such as LHC. Meanwhile, it is found that a Higgs factory with center of mass energy 250 GeV has a better potential to resolve the signature of this kind of light dark matter model than the Higgs factory with center of mass energy 350 GeV.

Fate of false vacuum in singlet-doublet fermion extension model with RG improved effective action

We study the effective potential and the Renormalization Group(RG) improvement to the effective potential of Higgs boson in a singlet-doublet fermion dark matter extension of the Standard Model(SM), and in general singlet-doublet fermion extension models with several copies of doublet fermions or singlet fermions. We study the stability of the electroweak vacuum with the RG improved effective potential in these models beyond the SM. We study the decay of the electroweak vacuum using the RG improved effective potential in these models beyond the SM. In this study we consider the quantum correction to the kinetic term in the effective action and consider the RG improvement of the kinetic term. Combining all these effects, we find that the decay rate of the false vacuum is slightly changed when calculated using the RG improved effective action in the singlet-doublet fermion dark matter model. In general singlet-doublet fermion extension models, we find that the presence of several copies of doublet fermions can make the electroweak vacuum stable if the new Yukawa couplings are not large. If the new Yukawa couplings are large, the electroweak vacuum can be turned into metastable or unstable again by the presence of extra fermions.

Scalar resonance at 750 GeV as composite of heavy vector-like fermions

We study a model of scalars which includes both the SM Higgs and a scalar singlet as composites of heavy vector-like fermions. The vector-like fermions are bounded by the super-strong four-fermion interactions. The scalar singlet decays to SM vector bosons through loop of heavy vector-like fermions. We show that the surprisingly large production cross section of di-photon events at 750 GeV resonance and the odd decay properties can all be explained. This model serves as a good model for both SM Higgs and a scalar resonance at 750 GeV.

Charged lepton flavor violation on target at GeV scale

We study the lepton flavor violating process, $e+ T \to τ+T'$, at a few GeV. This process can be studied by experiments directing GeV scale electron or positron beams on internal or fixed targets. We study the effects of some low energy lepton flavor violating interactions on this process. We study the sensitivities of this process on these low energy lepton flavor violating interactions and compare them to the sensitivities of lepton flavor violating $τ$ decay processes. Comparing with $τ$ decay processes, this process provides another way to study the lepton flavor violating effects with $e-τ$ conversion and it can be searched for in facilities with GeV scale electron or positron beams which are available in a number of laboratories in the world.

Effect of interaction with neutrons in matter on flavor conversion of super-light sterile neutrino with active neutrino

A super-light sterile neutrino was proposed to explain the absence of the expected upturn of the survival probability of low energy solar boron neutrinos. This is because this super-light sterile neutrino can oscillate efficiently with electron neutrino through a MSW resonance happened in Sun. One may naturally expect that a similar resonance should happen for neutrinos propagating in Earth matter. We study the flavor conversion of this super-light sterile neutrino with active neutrinos in Earth matter. We find that the scenario of the super-light sterile neutrino can easily pass through possible constraints from experiments which can test the Earth matter effect in oscillation of neutrinos. Interestinlgy, we find that this is because the naively expected resonant conversion disappears or is significantly suppressed due to the presence of a potential $V_n$ which arises from neutral current interaction of neutrino with neutrons in matter. In contrast, the neutron number density in the Sun is negligible and the effect of $V_n$ is effectively switched off. This enables the MSW resonance in Sun needed in oscillation of the super-light sterile neutrino with solar electron neutrinos. It's interesting to note that it is the different situation in the Sun and in the Earth that makes $V_n$ effectively turned off and turned on respectively. This observation makes the scenario of the super-light sterile neutrino quite interesting.

A Light Sterile Neutrino from Friedberg-Lee Symmetry

Light sterile neutrinos of mass about an eV with mixing $\tilde U_{ls}$ of a few percent to active neutrinos may solve some anomalies shown in experimental data related to neutrino oscillation. How to have light sterile neutrinos is one of the theoretical problems which have attracted a lot of attentions. In this article we show that such an eV scale light sterile neutrino candidate can be obtained in a seesaw model in which the right-handed neutrinos satisfy a softly-broken Friedberg-Lee (FL) symmetry. In this model a right-handed neutrino is guaranteed by the FL symmetry to be light comparing with other two heavy right-handed neutrinos. It can be of eV scale when the FL symmetry is softly broken and can play the role of eV scale sterile neutrino needed for explaining the anomalies of experimental data. This model predicts that one of the active neutrino is massless. We find that this model prefers inverted hierarchy mass pattern of active neutrinos than normal hierarchy. An interesting consequence of this model is that realizing relatively large $|{\tilde U}_{es}|$ and relatively small $|{\tilde U}_{μs}|$ in this model naturally leads to a relatively small $|{\tilde U}_{τs}|$. This interesting prediction can be tested in future atmospheric or solar neutrino experiments.

Electron events from the scattering with solar neutrinos in the search of keV scale sterile neutrino dark matter

In a previous work we showed that keV scale sterile neutrino dark matter $ν_s$ is possible to be detected in $β$ decay experiment using radioactive sources such as $^3$T or $^{106}$Ru. The signals of this dark matter candidate are mono-energetic electrons produced in neutrino capture process $ν_s + N' \to N +e^-$. These electrons have energy greater than the maximum energy of the electrons produced in the associated decay process $N' \to N +e^- + {\bar ν}_e$. Hence, signal electron events are well beyond the end point of the $β$ decay spectrum and are not polluted by the $β$ decay process. Another possible background, which is a potential threat to the detection of $ν_s$ dark matter, is the electron event produced by the scattering of solar neutrinos with electrons in target matter. In this article we study in detail this possible background and discuss its implication to the detection of keV scale sterile neutrino dark matter. In particular, bound state features of electrons in Ru atom are considered with care in the scattering process when the kinetic energy of the final electron is the same order of magnitude of the binding energy.

Interaction of cosmic background neutrinos with matter of periodic structure

We study coherent interaction of cosmic background neutrinos(CBNs) with matter of periodic structure. The mixing and small masses of neutrinos discovered in neutrino oscillation experiments indicate that CBNs which have very low energy today should be in mass states and can transform from one mass state to another in interaction with electrons in matter. We show that in a coherent scattering process a periodic matter structure designed to match the scale of the mass square difference of neutrinos can enhance the conversion of CBNs from one mass state to another. Energy of CBNs can be released in this scattering process and momentum transfer from CBNs to electrons in target matter can be obtained.

Generation and search of axion-like light particle using intense crystalline field

Intense electric field $\sim 10^{10}-10^{11}$ V/cm in crystal has been known for a long time and has wide applications. We study the conversion of axion-like light particle and photon in the intense electric field in crystal. We find that the conversion of axion-like particle and photon happens for energy larger than keV range. We propose search of axion-like light particle using the intense crystalline field. We discuss the solar axion search experiment and a variety of shining-through-wall experiment using crystalline field. Due to the intense crystalline field which corresponds to magnetic field $\sim 10^4-10^5$ Tesla these experiments are very interesting. In particular these experiments can probe the mass range of axion-like particle from eV to keV.

Grouping time series by pairwise measures of redundancy

A novel approach is proposed to group redundant time series in the frame of causality. It assumes that (i) the dynamics of the system can be described using just a small number of characteristic modes, and that (ii) a pairwise measure of redundancy is sufficient to elicit the presence of correlated degrees of freedom. We show the application of the proposed approach on fMRI data from a resting human brain and gene expression profiles from HeLa cell culture.

keV scale $ν_R$ dark matter and its detection in $β$ decay experiment

We study dark matter(DM) in the model with one keV scale right-handed neutrino $ν_{R1}$ and two GeV scale right-handed neutrinos $ν_{R2,3}$, the $ν$SM. We find that one of the GeV scale right-handed neutrinos can have much longer lifetime than the other when two GeV scale right-handed neutrinos are degenerate. We show that mass and mixing of light neutrinos can be explained in this case. Significant entropy release can be generated in a reheating produced by the decay of one of the GeV scale $ν_{R}$. The density of $ν_{R1}$ DM can be diluted by two orders of magnitude and the mixing of $ν_{R1}$ with active neutrinos is allowed to be much larger, reaching the bound from X-ray observation. This mixing can lead to sizeable rate of $ν_{R1}$ capture by radioactive nuclei. The $ν_{R1}$ capture events are mono-energetic electrons with keV scale energy away from the beta decay spectrum. This is a new way to detect DM in the universe.

Symmetry, dark matter and LHC phenomenology of the minimal $ν$SM

A sterile neutrino with a mass of a few keV can play the role of a warm dark matter(DM). This can be realized in seesaw models with 3 left- and 3 right-handed neutrinos. It is possible to identify the keV neutrino to be one of the right-handed neutrinos leaving the other two to be much more heavier, the $ν$SM model. We show that with this realization of keV neutrino DM, the model has an approximate Friedberg-Lee symmetry providing a natural explanation for the lightness of the right-handed neutrino. We also find that in this model the mixing parameters couple light and heavy neutrinos are strongly correlated, and can be large enough to have testable effects at the LHC for the two heavy right-handed neutrinos to be in the hundred-GeV range.

Neutrino Bilarge Mixing and Flavor Physics in the Flipped SU(5) Model

We have constructed a specific supersymmetric flipped SU(5) GUT model in which bilarge neutrino mixing is incorporated. Because the up-type and down-type quarks in the model are flipped in the representations ten and five with respect to the usual SU(5), the radiatively generated flavor mixing in squark mass matrices due to the large neutrino mixing has a pattern different from those in the conventional SU(5) and SO(10) supersymmetric GUTs. This leads to phenomenological consequences quite different from SU(5) or SO(10) supersymmetric GUT models. That is, it has almost no impact on B physics. On the contrary, the model has effects in top and charm physics as well as lepton physics. In particular, it gives promising prediction on the mass difference, $ΔM_D$, of the $D-{\bar D}$ mixing which for some ranges of the parameter space with large $\tanβ$ can be at the order of $10^9 ~\hbar ~s^{-1}$, one order of magnitude smaller than the experimental upper bound. In some regions of the parameter space $ΔM_D$ can saturate the present bound. For these ranges of parameter space, $t \to u,c+h^0$ can reach $10^{-5}-10^{-6}$ which would be observed at the LHC and future $γ-γ$ colliders.

$(g-2)_μ$ and CP Asymmetries in $B^0_{d,s} \to l^+ l^-$ and $b \to s γ$ in SUSY models

We show that with a good fit to the muon $g-2$ constraint, the CP asymmetry can be as large as 25% (15%) for $B^0_d \to τ^+ τ^-$ ($B^0_d \to μ^+ μ^-$) in SUGRA models with nonuniversal gaugino masses and MSSM. If tau events indentified at B factories the CP asymmetry in $B^0_d \to τ^+τ^-$ can be a powerful probe on physics beyond SM. An interesting case is that new physics gives a prediction on the branching ratio which is still in the uncertain region of the SM prediction. The CP asymmetry for $B^0_d \to l^+ l^-$ in this case can still reach 20%. So it is powerful to shed light on physics beyond SM while the CP asymmetry of $b \to s γ$ in this case can only reach 2% at most which is too small to draw a definite conclusion on new physics effects at B factories.

N=2 6-dimensional Supersymmetric $E_6$ Breaking

We study the $N=2$ supersymmetric $E_6$ models on the 6-dimensional space-time where the supersymmetry and gauge symmetry can be broken by the discrete symmetry. On the space-time $M^4\times S^1/(Z_2\times Z_2') \times S^1/(Z_2\times Z_2')$, for the zero modes, we obtain the 4-dimensional $N=1$ supersymmetric models with gauge groups $SU(3)\times SU(2) \times SU(2) \times U(1)^2$, $SU(4)\times SU(2) \times SU(2) \times U(1)$, and $SU(3)\times SU(2) \times U(1)^3$ with one extra pair of Higgs doublets from the vector multiplet. In addition, considering that the extra space manifold is the annulus $A^2$ and disc $D^2$, we list all the constraints on constructing the 4-dimensional $N=1$ supersymmetric $SU(3)\times SU(2) \times U(1)^3$ models for the zero modes, and give the simplest model with $Z_9$ symmetry. We also comment on the extra gauge symmetry breaking and its generalization.
