Celestial operator products from the worldsheet

We compute the operator product expansions of gluons and gravitons in celestial CFT from the worldsheet OPE of vertex operators of four-dimensional ambitwistor string theories. Remarkably, the worldsheet OPE localizes on the short-distance singularity between vertex operator insertions which in turn coincides with the OPE limit of operator insertions on the celestial sphere. The worldsheet CFT dynamically produces known celestial OPE coefficients -- as well as infinite towers of SL$(2,\mathbb{R})$ descendant contributions to the celestial OPE -- without any truncations or approximations. We obtain these results for all helicities and incoming/outgoing configurations. Furthermore, the worldsheet OPE encodes the infinite-dimensional symmetry algebras associated with the conformally soft sectors of gauge theory and gravity. We provide explicit operator realizations of the currents generating these symmetries on ambitwistor space in terms of vertex operators for soft gluons and gravitons, also computing their actions on hard particles of all helicities. Lastly, we show that the worldsheet OPE for momentum eigenstates produces the collinear splitting functions of gluons and gravitons.

Supersymmetric celestial OPEs and soft algebras from the ambitwistor string worldsheet

Using the ambitwistor string, we complete the list of celestial OPE coefficients for supersymmetric theories. This uses the ambitwistor string worldsheet CFT to dynamically generate the OPE coefficients for maximally supersymmetric gauge theory, gravity and Einstein-Yang-Mills theories, including all helicity and orientation configurations. This extends previous purely bosonic results to include supersymmetry and provides explicit formulas which are, to the best of our knowledge, not in the literature. We also examine how the supersymmetric infinite dimensional soft algebras behave compared to the purely bosonic cases.

The Role of Specific Ion Effects in Ion Transport: The Case of Nitrate and Thiocyanate

The selective transport of trivalent rare earth metals from aqueous to organic environments with the help of amphiphilic "extractants" is an industrially important process. When the amphiphilic extractant is positively charged or neutral, the coextracted background anions are not only necessary for charge balance but also have a large impact on extraction efficiency and selectivity. In particular, the opposite selectivity trends observed throughout the lanthanide series in the presence of nitrate and thiocyanate ions have not been explained. To understand the role of background anions in the phase transfer of lanthanide cations, we use a positively charged long-chain aliphatic molecule, modeling a common extractant, and gain molecular level insight into interfacial headgroup-anion interactions. By combining surface sensitive sum frequency generation spectroscopy with X-ray reflectivity and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, we observed qualitative differences in the orientational and overall interfacial structure of nitrate and thiocyanate solutions at a positively charged Langmuir monolayer. Though nitrate adsorbs without dramatic changes to the solvation structure at the interface or the monolayer ordering, thiocyanate significantly alters the water structure and reduces monolayer ordering. We suggest that these qualitatively different adsorption trends help explain a reversal in system selectivity toward lighter or heavier lanthanides in solvent extraction systems in the presence of nitrate or thiocyanate anions.

Deeply-Supervised Recurrent Convolutional Neural Network for Saliency Detection

This paper proposes a novel saliency detection method by developing a deeply-supervised recurrent convolutional neural network (DSRCNN), which performs a full image-to-image saliency prediction. For saliency detection, the local, global, and contextual information of salient objects is important to obtain a high quality salient map. To achieve this goal, the DSRCNN is designed based on VGGNet-16. Firstly, the recurrent connections are incorporated into each convolutional layer, which can make the model more powerful for learning the contextual information. Secondly, side-output layers are added to conduct the deeply-supervised operation, which can make the model learn more discriminative and robust features by effecting the intermediate layers. Finally, all of the side-outputs are fused to integrate the local and global information to get the final saliency detection results. Therefore, the DSRCNN combines the advantages of recurrent convolutional neural networks and deeply-supervised nets. The DSRCNN model is tested on five benchmark datasets, and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art saliency detection approaches on all test datasets.

Liquid Surface X-ray Studies of Gold Nanoparticle-Phospholipid Films at the Air/Water Interface

Amphiphilic phospholipids and nanoparticles functionalized with hydrophobic capping ligands have previously been extensively investigated for their capacity to self-assemble into Langmuir monolayers at the air/water interface. However, understanding of composite films consisting of both nanoparticles and phospholipids, and by extension, the complex interactions arising between nanomaterials and biological membranes, remains limited. In this work, dodecanethiol-capped gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs) with an average core diameter of 6 nm were incorporated into 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC) monolayers in area ratios ranging from 0.1 to 20% area coverage at a surface pressure of 30 mN/m. High resolution liquid surface X-ray scattering studies revealed a phase separation of the DPPC and Au-NP components of the composite film, as confirmed with atomic force microscopy after the film was transferred to a substrate. At low Au-NP content, the structural organization of the phase-separated film is best described as a DPPC film containing isolated islands of Au-NPs. However, increasing the Au-NP content beyond 5% area coverage transforms the structural organization of the composite film to a long-range interconnected network of Au-NP strands surrounding small seas of DPPC, where the density of the Au-NP network increases with increasing Au-NP content. The observed phase separation and structural organization of the phospholipid and nanoparticle components in these Langmuir monolayers are useful for understanding interactions of nanoparticles with biological membranes.

Density Profiles of Liquid/Vapor Interfaces Away from Their Critical Point

We examine the applicability of various model profiles for the liquid/vapor interface by X-ray reflectivities on water and ethanol and their mixtures at room temperature. Analysis of the X-ray reflecivities using various density profiles shows an error-function like profile is the most adequate within experimental error. Our finding, together with recent observations from simulation studies on liquid surfaces, strongly suggest that the capillary-wave dynamics shapes the interfacial density profile in terms of the error function.
