Asymptotics for the twisted eta-product and applications to sign changes in partitions

We prove asymptotic formulas for the complex coefficients of (ζq;q)∞−1(ζq;q)_\infty^{-1}, where ζζ is a root of unity, and apply our results to determine secondary terms in the asymptotics for p(a,b,n)p(a,b,n), the number of integer partitions of nn with largest part congruent aa modulo bb. Our results imply that, as n→∞n \to \infty, the difference p(a1,b,n)−p(a2,b,n)p(a_1,b,n)-p(a_2,b,n) for a1≠a2a_1 \neq a_2 oscillates like a cosine, when renormalized by elementary functions. Moreover, we give asymptotic formulas for arbitrary linear combinations of {p(a,b,n)}1≤a≤b\{p(a,b,n)\}_{1 \leq a \leq b}.

Statistics for Unimodal Sequences

We prove a number of limiting distributions for statistics for unimodal sequences of positive integers by adapting a probabilistic framework for integer partitions introduced by Fristedt. The difficulty in applying the direct analogue of Fristedt's techniques to unimodal sequences lies in the fact that the generating function for partitions is an infinite product, while that of unimodal sequences is not. Essentially, we get around this by conditioning on the size of the largest part and working uniformly on contributing summands. Our framework may be used to derive many distributions, and our results include joint distributions for largest parts and multiplicities of small parts. We discuss ranks as well. We further obtain analogous results for strongly unimodal sequences.

Weighted cylindric partitions

Recently Corteel and Welsh outlined a technique for finding new sum-product identities by using functional relations between generating functions for cylindric partitions and a theorem of Borodin. Here, we extend this framework to include very general product-sides coming from work of Han and Xiong. In doing so, we are led to consider structures such as weighted cylindric partitions, symmetric cylindric partitions and weighted skew double shifted plane partitions. We prove some new identities and obtain new proofs of known identities, including the Göllnitz-Gordon and Little Göllnitz identities as well as some beautiful Schmidt-type identities of Andrews and Paule.
