Time series models for realized covariance matrices based on the matrix-F distribution

We propose a new Conditional BEKK matrix-F (CBF) model for the time-varying realized covariance (RCOV) matrices. This CBF model is capable of capturing heavy-tailed RCOV, which is an important stylized fact but could not be handled adequately by the Wishart-based models. To further mimic the long memory feature of the RCOV, a special CBF model with the conditional heterogeneous autoregressive (HAR) structure is introduced. Moreover, we give a systematical study on the probabilistic properties and statistical inferences of the CBF model, including exploring its stationarity, establishing the asymptotics of its maximum likelihood estimator, and giving some new inner-product-based tests for its model checking. In order to handle a large dimensional RCOV matrix, we construct two reduced CBF models -- the variance-target CBF model (for moderate but fixed dimensional RCOV matrix) and the factor CBF model (for high dimensional RCOV matrix). For both reduced models, the asymptotic theory of the estimated parameters is derived. The importance of our entire methodology is illustrated by simulation results and two real examples.

On the Surprising Explanatory Power of Higher Realized Moments in Practice

Realized moments of higher order computed from intraday returns are introduced in recent years. The literature indicates that realized skewness is an important factor in explaining future asset returns. However, the literature mainly focuses on the whole market and on the monthly or weekly scale. In this paper, we conduct an extensive empirical analysis to investigate the forecasting abilities of realized skewness and realized kurtosis towards individual stock's future return and variance in the daily scale. It is found that realized kurtosis possesses significant forecasting power for the stock's future variance. In the meanwhile, realized skewness is lack of explanatory power for the future daily return for individual stocks with a short horizon, in contrast with the existing literature.

Forecasting High-Dimensional Realized Volatility Matrices Using A Factor Model

Modeling and forecasting covariance matrices of asset returns play a crucial role in finance. The availability of high frequency intraday data enables the modeling of the realized covariance matrix directly. However, most models in the literature suffer from the curse of dimensionality. To solve the problem, we propose a factor model with a diagonal CAW model for the factor realized covariance matrices. Asymptotic theory is derived for the estimated parameters. In an extensive empirical analysis, we find that the number of parameters can be reduced significantly. Furthermore, the proposed model maintains a comparable performance with a benchmark vector autoregressive model.

Self-excited Threshold Poisson Autoregression

This paper studies theory and inference of an observation-driven model for time series of counts. It is assumed that the observations follow a Poisson distribution conditioned on an accompanying intensity process, which is equipped with a two-regime structure according to the magnitude of the lagged observations. The model remedies one of the drawbacks of the Poisson autoregression model by allowing possibly negative correlation in the observations. Classical Markov chain theory and Lyapunov's method are utilized to derive the conditions under which the process has a unique invariant probability measure and to show a strong law of large numbers of the intensity process. Moreover the asymptotic theory of the maximum likelihood estimates of the parameters is established. A simulation study and a real data application are considered, where the model is applied to the number of major earthquakes in the world.
