Criticality and Chaos in Systems of Communities

We consider a simple model of communities interacting via bilinear terms. After analyzing the thermal equilibrium case, which can be described by an Hamiltonian, we introduce the dynamics that, for Ising-like variables, reduces to a Glauber-like dynamics. We analyze and compare four different versions of the dynamics: flow (differential equations), map (discrete-time dynamics), local-time update flow, and local-time update map. The presence of only bilinear interactions prevent the flow cases to develop any dynamical instability, the system converging always to the thermal equilibrium. The situation is different for the map when unfriendly couplings are involved, where period-two oscillations arise. In the case of the map with local-time updates, oscillations of any period and chaos can arise as a consequence of the reciprocal "tension" accumulated among the communities during their sleeping time interval. The resulting chaos can be of two kinds: true chaos characterized by positive Lyapunov exponent and bifurcation cascades, or marginal chaos characterized by zero Lyapunov exponent and critical continuous regions.

Novel considerations about the non-equilibrium regime of the tricritical point in a metamagnetic model: localization and tricritical exponents

We have investigated the time-dependent regime of a two-dimensional metamagnetic model at its tricritical point via Monte Carlo simulations. First of all, we obtained the temperature and magnetic field corresponding to the tricritical point of the model by using a refinement process based on optimization of the coefficient of determination in the log-log fit of magnetization decay as function of time. With these estimates in hand, we obtained the dynamic tricritical exponents $θ$ and $z$ and the static tricritical exponents $ν$ and $β$ by using the universal power-law scaling relations for the staggered magnetization and its moments at early stage of the dynamic evolution. Our results at tricritical point confirm that this model belongs to the two-dimensional Blume-Capel model universality class for both static and dynamic behaviors, and also they corroborate the conjecture of Janssen and Oerding for the dynamics of tricritical points.

Ion Specificity and Micellization of Ionic Surfactants: A Monte Carlo Study

We develop a simulation method which allows us to calculate the critical micelle concentrations for ionic surfactants in the presence of different salts. The results are in good agreement with the experimental data. The simulations are performed on a simple cubic lattice. The anionic interactions with the alkyl chains are taken into account based on the previously developed theory of the interfacial tensions of hydrophobic interfaces: the kosmotropic anions do not interact with the hydrocarbon tails of ionic surfactants, while chaotropic anions interact with the alkyl chains through a dispersion potential proportional to the anionic polarizability.
