Fourier-transform spectroscopy of $^{13}$C$^{17}$O and deperturbation analysis of the A$^1Π$ ($ν$ = 0 - 3) levels

The high-resolution B$^1Σ^+$ - A$^1Π$ (0, 0) and (0, 3) emission bands of the less-abundant $^{13}$C$^{17}$O isotopologue have been investigated by Fourier-transform spectroscopy in the visible region using a Bruker IFS 125HR spectrometer at an accuracy 0.003 cm$^{-1}$. These spectra are combined with high-resolution photoabsorption measurements of the $^{13}$C$^{17}$O B$^1Σ^+$ $\leftarrow$ X$^1Σ^+$ (0, 0), B$^1Σ^+$ $\leftarrow$ X$^1Σ^+$ (1, 0) and C$^1Σ^+$ $\leftarrow$ X$^1Σ^+$ (0, 0) bands recorded with an accuracy of 0.01 cm$^{-1}$ using the vacuum ultraviolet Fourier-transform spectrometer, installed on the DESIRS beamline at the SOLEIL synchrotron. In the studied 17,950 - 22,500 cm$^{-1}$ and 86,800 - 92,100 cm$^{-1}$ regions, 480 transitions have been measured. These new experimental data were combined with data from the C $\to$ A and B $\to$ A systems, previously analyzed in 13C17O. The frequencies of 1003 transitions derived from 12 bands were used to analyze the perturbations between the A$^1Π$ ($ν$ = 0 - 3) levels and rovibrational levels of the d$^3Δ_i$, e$^3Σ^-$, a$'{}^3Σ^+$, I$^1Σ^-$ and D$^1Δ$ states as well as to a preliminary investigation of weak irregularities that appear in the B$^1Σ^+$ ($ν$ = 0) level. Deperturbed molecular constants and term values of the A$^1Π$ state were obtained. The spin-orbit and L-uncoupling interaction parameters as well as isotopologue-independent spin-orbit and rotation-electronic perturbation parameters were derived.

Improved Ionization and Dissociation Energies of the Deuterium Molecule

The ionization energy of D$_2$ has been determined experimentally from measurements involving two-photon Doppler-free vacuum-ultraviolet pulsed laser excitation and near-infrared continuous-wave laser excitation to yield $E_\mathrm{I}(\mathrm{D}_2)=124\,745.393\,739(26)$ \wn. From this value, the dissociation energy of D$_2$ is deduced to be $D_0$(D$_2$) = 36\,748.362\,282(26) \wn, representing a 25-fold improvement over previous values, and found in good agreement (at $1.6σ$) with recent ab initio calculations of the 4-particle nonadiabatic relativistic energy and of quantum-electrodynamic corrections up to order $mα^6$. This result constitutes a test of quantum electrodynamics in the molecular domain, while a perspective is opened to determine nuclear charge radii from molecules.

Proton-Electron Mass Ratio from Laser Spectroscopy of HD$^+$ at the Part-Per-Trillion Level

Accepted values of the masses of several subatomic particles have been under debate since recent measurements in Penning traps produced more precise yet incompatible results, implying possible inconsistencies in closely related physical constants like the proton-electron and deuteron-proton mass ratios. These quantities also influence the predicted vibrational spectrum of the deuterated molecular hydrogen ion in its electronic ground state, of which we measured the v=0 - 9 overtone transition frequency with an uncertainty of 2.9 parts-per-trillion through Doppler-free two-photon laser spectroscopy. Leveraging high-precision ab initio calculations we convert our measurement to tight constraints on the proton-electron and deuteron-proton mass ratios, consistent with the most recent Penning-trap determinations of these quantities, and yielding a new value of the proton-electron mass ratio with an unprecedented precision of 21 parts-per-trillion.

Rotational level spacings in HD from vibrational saturation spectroscopy

The R(1), R(3) and P(3) ro-vibrational transitions in the (2-0) overtone band of the HD molecule are measured in Doppler-free saturation using the technique of NICE-OHMS spectroscopy. For the P(3) line, hitherto not observed in saturation, we report a frequency of $203\,821\,936\,805\,(60)$ kHz. The dispersive line shapes observed in the three spectra show strong correlations, allowing for extraction of accurate information on rotational level spacings. This leads to level spacings of $Δ_{(J=3)-(J=1)}= 13\,283\,245\,098\,(30)$ kHz in the $v=0$ ground state, and $Δ_{(J=4)-(J=2)}= 16\,882\,368\,179\,(20)$ kHz in the $v=2$ excited vibration in HD. These results show that experimental values for the rotational spacings are consistently larger than those obtained with advanced ab initio theoretical calculations at 1.5$σ$, where the uncertainty is determined by theory. The same holds for the vibrational transitions where systematic deviations of 1.7-1.9$σ$ are consistently found for the five lines accurately measured in the (2-0) band.

Precision measurement of quasi-bound resonances in H$_2$ and the H + H scattering length

Quasi-bound resonances of H$_2$ are produced via two-photon photolysis of H$_2$S molecules as reactive intermediates or transition states, and detected before decay of the parent molecule into three separate atoms. As was previously reported [K.F. Lai et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 183001 (2021)] four centrifugally bound quantum resonances with lifetimes of multiple $μ$s, lying energetically above the dissociation limit of the electronic ground state X$^1Σ_g^+$ of H$_2$, were observed as X($v,J$) = (7,21)$^*$, (8,19)$^*$, (9,17)$^*$, and (10,15)$^*$, while also the short-lived ($\sim 1.5$ ns) quasi-bound resonance X(11,13)$^*$ was probed. The present paper gives a detailed account on the identification of the quasi-bound or shape resonances, based on laser detection via F-X two-photon transitions, and their strongly enhanced Franck-Condon factors due to the shifting of the wave function density to large internuclear separation. In addition, the assignment of the rotational quantum number is verified by subsequent multi-step laser excitation into autoionization continuum resonances. Existing frameworks of full-fledged ab initio computations for the bound region in H$_2$, including Born-Oppenheimer, adiabatic, non-adiabatic, relativistic and quantum-electrodynamic contributions, are extended into the energetic range above the dissociation energy. These comprehensive calculations are compared to the accurate measurements of energies of quasi-bound resonances, finding excellent agreement. Etc.

Fourier-transform VUV spectroscopy of $^{14,15}$N and $^{12,13}$C

Accurate Fourier-transform spectroscopic absorption measurements of vacuum ultraviolet transitions in atomic nitrogen and carbon were performed at the Soleil synchrotron. For $^{14}$N transitions from the $2s^22p^3\,^4$S$_{3/2}$ ground state and from the $2s^22p^3\,^2$P and $^2$D metastable states were determined in the $95 - 124$ nm range at an accuracy of $0.025\,\mathrm{cm}^{-1}$. Combination of these results with data from previous precision laser experiments in the vacuum ultraviolet range reveal an overall and consistent offset of -0.04 \wn\ from values reported in the NIST database. %The splitting of the $2s^22p^3\,^4$S$_{3/2}$ -- %$2s2p^4\,^4$P$_{5/2,3/2,1/2}$ The splittings of the $2s^22p^3\,^4$S$_{3/2}$ -- $2s2p^4\,^4$P$_{J}$ transitions are well-resolved for $^{14}$N and $^{15}$N and isotope shifts determined. While excitation of a $2p$ valence electron yields very small isotope shifts, excitation of a $2s$ core electron results in large isotope shifts, in agreement with theoretical predictions. For carbon six transitions from the ground $2s^22p^2\,^3$P$_{J}$ and $2s^22p3s\, ^3$P$_{J}$ excited states at $165$ nm are measured for both $^{12}$C and $^{13}$C isotopes.

Lamb-peak spectrum of the HD (2-0) P(1) line

A saturation spectroscopy measurement of the P(1) line of the ($2-0$) band in HD is performed in a sensitive cavity-enhanced optical setup involving frequency comb calibration. The spectral signature is that of a Lamb-peak, in agreement with a density-matrix model description involving 9 hyperfine components and 16 crossover resonances of $Λ$-type. Comparison of the experimental spectra with the simulations yields a rovibrational transition frequency at 209,784,242,007 (20) kHz. Agreement is found with a first principles calculation in the framework of non-adiabatic quantum electrodynamics within 2$σ$, where the combined uncertainty is fully determined by theory.

Precision measurement of the fundamental vibrational frequencies of tritium-bearing hydrogen molecules: T$_2$, DT, HT

High-resolution coherent Raman spectroscopic measurements of all three tritium-containing molecular hydrogen isotopologues T$_2$, DT and HT were performed to determine the ground electronic state fundamental Q-branch ($v=0 \rightarrow 1, ΔJ = 0$) transition frequencies at accuracies of $0.0005$ cm$^{-1}$. An over hundred-fold improvement in accuracy over previous experiments allows the comparison with the latest ab initio calculations in the framework of Non-Adiabatic Perturbation Theory including nonrelativisitic, relativisitic and QED contributions. Excellent agreement is found between experiment and theory, thus providing a verification of the validity of the NAPT-framework for these tritiated species. While the transition frequencies were corrected for ac-Stark shifts, the contributions of non-resonant background as well as quantum interference effects between resonant features in the nonlinear spectroscopy were quantitatively investigated, also leading to corrections to the transition frequencies. Methods of saturated CARS with the observation of Lamb dips, as well as the use of continuous-wave radiation for the Stokes frequency were explored, that might pave the way for future higher-accuracy CARS measurements.

Two-photon Doppler-free ultraviolet laser spectroscopy on sulphur atoms

The $3p^{4}$ $^{3}$P$_{J}$ - $3p^{3}4p$ $^{3}$P$_{J}$ transition in the sulphur atom is investigated in a precision two-photon excitation scheme under Doppler-free and collision-free circumstances yielding an absolute accuracy of 0.0009 cm$^{-1}$, using a narrowband pulsed laser. This verifies and improves the level separations between amply studied odd parity levels with even parity levels in S I. An improved value for the $^{3}$P$_{2}$ - $^{3}$P$_{1}$ ground state fine structure splitting is determined at $396.0564$ (7) cm$^{-1}$. A $^{34}$S - $^{32}$S atomic isotope shift was measured from combining time-of-flight mass spectrometry with laser spectroscopy.

The spin-forbidden vacuum-ultraviolet absorption spectrum of 14N15N

Photoabsorption spectra of ${}^{14}{\rm N}{}^{15}{\rm N}$ were recorded at high resolution with a vacuum-ultraviolet Fourier-Transform spectrometer fed by synchrotron radiation in the range 81 to 100 nm. The combination of high column density ($3\times 10^{17}$ cm$^{-2}$) and low temperature (98 K) allowed for the recording of weak spin-forbidden absorption bands exciting levels of triplet character. The triplet states borrow intensity from ${}^1Π_u$ states of Rydberg and valence character while causing their predissociation. New predissociation linewidths and molecular constants are obtained for the states $C\,{}^3Π_u(v=7,8,14,15,16,21)$, $G\,{}^3Π_u(v=0,1,4)$, and $F\,{}^3Π_u(v=0)$. The positions and widths of these levels are shown to be well-predicted by a coupled-Schroedinger equation model with empirical parameters based on experimental data on ${}^{14}{\rm N}_2$ and ${}^{15}{\rm N}_2$ triplet levels.

Constraint on a cosmological variation in the proton-to-electron mass ratio from electronic CO absorption

Carbon monoxide (CO) absorption in the sub-damped Lyman-$α$ absorber at redshift $z_{abs} \simeq 2.69$, toward the background quasar SDSS J123714.60+064759.5 (J1237+0647), was investigated for the first time in order to search for a possible variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio, $μ$, over a cosmological time-scale. The observations were performed with the Very Large Telescope/Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph with a signal-to-noise ratio of 40 per 2.5 kms$^{-1}$ per pixel at $\sim 5000$ Å. Thirteen CO vibrational bands in this absorber are detected: the A$^{1}Π$ - X$^{1}Σ^{+}$ ($ν'$,0) for $ν' = 0 - 8$, B$^{1}Σ^{+}$ - X$^{1}Σ^{+}$ (0,0), C$^{1}Σ^{+}$ - X$^{1}Σ^{+}$ (0,0), and E$^{1}Π$ - X$^{1}Σ^{+}$ (0,0) singlet-singlet bands and the d$^{3}Δ$ - X$^{1}Σ^{+}$ (5,0) singlet-triplet band. An updated database including the most precise molecular inputs needed for a $μ$-variation analysis is presented for rotational levels $J = 0 - 5$, consisting of transition wavelengths, oscillator strengths, natural lifetime damping parameters, and sensitivity coefficients to a variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio. A comprehensive fitting method was used to fit all the CO bands at once and an independent constraint of $Δμ/μ= (0.7 \pm 1.6_{stat} \pm 0.5_{syst}) \times 10^{-5}$ was derived from CO only. A combined analysis using both molecular hydrogen and CO in the same J1237+0647 absorber returned a final constraint on the relative variation of $Δμ/μ= (-5.6 \pm 5.6_{stat} \pm 3.1_{syst}) \times 10^{-6}$, which is consistent with no variation over a look-back time of $\sim 11.4$ Gyrs.

Precision measurements and test of molecular theory in highly-excited vibrational states of H$_2$ $(v=11)$

Accurate $EF{}^1Σ^+_g-X{}^1Σ^+_g$ transition energies in molecular hydrogen were determined for transitions originating from levels with highly-excited vibrational quantum number, $v=11$, in the ground electronic state. Doppler-free two-photon spectroscopy was applied on vibrationally excited H$_2^*$, produced via the photodissociation of H$_2$S, yielding transition frequencies with accuracies of $45$ MHz or $0.0015$ cm$^{-1}$. An important improvement is the enhanced detection efficiency by resonant excitation to autoionizing $7pπ$ electronic Rydberg states, resulting in narrow transitions due to reduced ac-Stark effects. Using known $EF$ level energies, the level energies of $X(v=11, J=1,3-5)$ states are derived with accuracies of typically 0.002 cm$^{-1}$. These experimental values are in excellent agreement with, and are more accurate than the results obtained from the most advanced ab initio molecular theory calculations including relativistic and QED contributions.

Probing QED and fundamental constants through laser spectroscopy of vibrational transitions in HD+

The simplest molecules in nature, molecular hydrogen ions in the form of H2+ and HD+, provide an important benchmark system for tests of quantum electrodynamics in complex forms of matter. Here, we report on such a test based on a frequency measurement of a vibrational overtone transition in HD+ by laser spectroscopy. We find that the theoretical and experimental frequencies are equal to within 0.6(1.1) parts per billion, which represents the most stringent test of molecular theory so far. Our measurement not only confirms the validity of high-order quantum electrodynamics in molecules, but also enables the long predicted determination of the proton-to-electron mass ratio from a molecular system, as well as improved constraints on hypothetical fifth forces and compactified higher dimensions at the molecular scale. With the perspective of comparisons between theory and experiment at the 0.01 part-per-billion level, our work demonstrates the potential of molecular hydrogen ions as a probe of fundamental physical constants and laws.

A constraint on a varying proton--electron mass ratio 1.5 billion years after the Big Bang

A molecular hydrogen absorber at a lookback time of 12.4 billion years, corresponding to 10$\%$ of the age of the universe today, is analyzed to put a constraint on a varying proton--electron mass ratio, $μ$. A high resolution spectrum of the J1443$+$2724 quasar, which was observed with the Very Large Telescope, is used to create an accurate model of 89 Lyman and Werner band transitions whose relative frequencies are sensitive to $μ$, yielding a limit on the relative deviation from the current laboratory value of $Δμ/μ=(-9.5\pm5.4_{\textrm{stat}} \pm 5.3_{\textrm{sys}})\times 10^{-6}$.

Constraint on a varying proton-to-electron mass ratio from molecular hydrogen absorption toward quasar SDSS J123714.60+064759.5

Molecular hydrogen transitions in the sub-damped Lyman alpha absorber at redshift z = 2.69, toward the background quasar SDSS J123714.60+064759.5, were analyzed in order to search for a possible variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio mu over a cosmological time-scale. The system is composed of three absorbing clouds where 137 H2 and HD absorption features were detected. The observations were taken with the Very Large Telescope/Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph with a signal-to-noise ratio of 32 per 2.5 km/s pixel, covering the wavelengths from 356.6 to 409.5 nm. A comprehensive fitting method was used to fit all the absorption features at once. Systematic effects of distortions to the wavelength calibrations were analyzed in detail from measurements of asteroid and `solar twin' spectra, and were corrected for. The final constraint on the relative variation in mu between the absorber and the current laboratory value is dmu/mu = (-5.4 \pm 6.3 stat \pm 4.0 syst) x 10^(-6), consistent with no variation over a look-back time of 11.4 Gyrs.

Constraints on extra dimensions from precision molecular spectroscopy

Accurate investigations of quantum level energies in molecular systems are shown to provide a test ground to constrain the size of compactified extra dimensions. This is made possible by the recent progress in precision metrology with ultrastable lasers on energy levels in neutral molecular hydrogen (H$_2$, HD and D$_2$) and the molecular hydrogen ions (H$_2^+$, HD$^+$ and D$_2^+$). Comparisons between experiment and quantum electrodynamics calculations for these molecular systems can be interpreted in terms of probing large extra dimensions, under which conditions gravity will become much stronger. Molecules are a probe of space-time geometry at typical distances where chemical bonds are effective, i.e. at length scales of an Å. Constraints on compactification radii for extra dimensions are derived within the Arkani-Hamed-Dimopoulos-Dvali framework, while constraints for curvature or brane separation are derived within the Randall-Sundrum framework. Based on the molecular spectroscopy of D$_2$ molecules and HD$^+$ ions, the compactification size for seven extra dimensions (in connection to M-theory defined in 11 dimensions) of equal size is shown to be limited to $R_7 < 0.6 μ$m. While limits on compactification sizes of extra dimensions based on other branches of physics are compared, the prospect of further tightening constraints from the molecular method is discussed.

High-precision laser spectroscopy of the CO A$^1Π$ - X$^1Σ^+$ (2,0), (3,0) and (4,0) bands

High-precision two-photon Doppler-free frequency measurements have been performed on the CO A$^1Π$ - X$^1Σ^+$ fourth-positive system (2,0), (3,0), and (4,0) bands. Absolute frequencies of forty-three transitions, for rotational quantum numbers up to $J = 5$, have been determined at an accuracy of $1.6\times10^{-3}$ cm$^{-1}$, using advanced techniques of two-color 2+1' resonance-enhanced multi-photon ionization, Sagnac interferometry, frequency-chirp analysis on the laser pulses, and correction for AC-Stark shifts. The accurate transition frequencies of the CO A$^1Π$ - X$^1Σ^+$ system are of relevance for comparison with astronomical data in the search for possible drifts of fundamental constants in the early universe. The present accuracies in laboratory wavelengths of $Δλ/λ= 2 \times 10^{-8}$ may be considered exact for the purpose of such comparisons.

Spectroscopy and perturbation analysis of the CO A$^1Π-$X$^1Σ^+$ (2,0), (3,0) and (4,0) bands

The (2,0) (3,0) and (4,0) bands of the A$^1Π-$X$^1Σ^+$ system of $^{12}$C$^{16}$O have been re-investigated by high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy. A VUV Fourier-transform spectrometer, illuminated by synchrotron radiation, was applied to record a jet-cooled spectrum, a room temperature static gas spectrum and a high temperature (900 K) quasi-static gas spectrum, resulting in absolute accuracies of 0.01$-$0.02 cm$^{-1}$ for the rotational line frequencies. Precise laser-based data were included in the analysis allowing for a highly accurate determination of band origins. Rotational levels up to $J=52$ were observed. The data were used to perform an improved analysis of the perturbations in the A$^1Π$, $v=2$, $v=3$, and $v=4$ levels by vibrational levels of the D$^1Δ$, I$^1Σ^-$, e$^3Σ^-$, d$^3Δ$, and a$'^3Σ^+$ states.

Test of quantum chemistry in vibrationally-hot hydrogen molecules

Precision measurements are performed on highly excited vibrational quantum states of molecular hydrogen. The $v=12, J=0-3$ rovibrational levels of H$_2$ ($X^1Σ_g^+$), lying only $2000$ cm$^{-1}$ below the first dissociation limit, were populated by photodissociation of H$_2$S and their level energies were accurately determined by two-photon Doppler-free spectroscopy. A comparison between the experimental results on $v=12$ level energies with the best \textit{ab initio} calculations shows good agreement, where the present experimental accuracy of $3.5 \times10^{-3}$ cm$^{-1}$ is more precise than theory, hence providing a gateway to further test theoretical advances in this benchmark quantum system.

$B\,^1Σ^{+}_{u}$ and $EF\,^{1}Σ^{+}_{g}$ level energies of D$_{2}$

Accurate absolute level energies of the $B\,^1Σ^{+}_{u}$, $v=0-8, N$ and $EF\,^{1}Σ^{+}_{g}$, $v=0-21, N$ rovibrational quantum states of molecular deuterium are derived by combining results from a Doppler-free two-photon laser excitation study on several lines in the $EF\,{}^{1}Σ_{g}^{+}-X\,{}^{1}Σ_{g}^{+}$ (0,0) band, with results from a Fourier-transform spectroscopic emission study on a low-pressure hydrogen discharge. Level energy uncertainties as low as 0.0005 cm$^{-1}$ are obtained for some low-lying $E\,^{1}Σ^{+}_{g}$ inner-well rovibrational levels, while uncertainties for higher-lying rovibrational levels and those of the $F\,^{1}Σ^{+}_{g}$ outer-well states are nominally 0.005 cm$^{-1}$. Level energies of $B\,^1Σ^{+}_{u}$ rovibrational levels, for $v \leq 8$ and $N \leq 10$ are determined at an accuracy of 0.001 cm$^{-1}$. Computed wavelengths of D$_2$ Lyman transitions in the $B\,^1Σ^{+}_{u}-X\,^{1}Σ^{+}_{g}$ ($v,0$) bands are also tabulated for future applications.

Constraints on changes in the proton-electron mass ratio using methanol lines

We report Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) absorption spectroscopy in four methanol (CH$_3$OH) lines in the $z = 0.88582$ gravitational lens towards PKS1830-211. Three of the four lines have very different sensitivity coefficients $K_μ$ to changes in the proton-electron mass ratio $μ$; a comparison between the line redshifts thus allows us to test for temporal evolution in $μ$. We obtain a stringent statistical constraint on changes in $μ$ by comparing the redshifted 12.179 GHz and 60.531 GHz lines, $[Δmu/μ] \leq 1.1 \times 10^{-7}$ ($2σ$) over $0 < z \leq 0.88582$, a factor of $\approx 2.5$ more sensitive than the best earlier results. However, the higher signal-to-noise ratio (by a factor of $\approx 2$) of the VLA spectrum in the 12.179 GHz transition also indicates that this line has a different shape from that of the other three CH$_3$OH lines (at $> 4σ$ significance). The sensitivity of the above result, and that of all earlier CH$_3$OH studies, is thus likely to be limited by unknown systematic errors, probably arising due to the frequency-dependent structure of PKS1830-211. A robust result is obtained by combining the three lines at similar frequencies, 48.372, 48.377 and 60.531 GHz, whose line profiles are found to be in good agreement. This yields the $2σ$ constraint $[Δμ/μ] \lesssim 4 \times 10^{-7}$, the most stringent current constraint on changes in $μ$. We thus find no evidence for changes in the proton-electron mass ratio over a lookback time of $\approx 7.5$ Gyrs.

Detection of vibronic bands of C$_3$ in a translucent cloud towards HD 169454

We report the detection of eight vibronic bands of C$_3$, seven of which have been hitherto unobserved in astrophysical objects, in the translucent cloud towards HD~169454. Four of these bands are also found towards two additional objects: HD~73882 and HD~154368. Very high signal-to-noise ratio ($\sim$1000 and higher) and high resolving power ($R=80,000$) UVES-VLT spectra (Paranal, Chile) allow for detecting novel spectral features of C$_3$, even revealing weak perturbed features in the strongest bands. The work presented here provides the most complete spectroscopic survey of the so far largest carbon chain detected in translucent interstellar clouds. High-quality laboratory spectra of C$_3$ are measured using cavity ring-down absorption spectroscopy in a supersonically expanding hydrocarbon plasma, to support the analysis of the identified bands towards HD~169454. A column density of N(C$_3$) = $(6.6 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$ is inferred and the excitation of the molecule exhibits two temperature components; $T_{exc}= 22 \pm 1$ K for the low-$J$ states and $T_{exc}= 187 \pm 25$ K for the high-$J$ tail. The rotational excitation of C$_3$ is reasonably well explained by models involving a mechanism including inelastic collisions, formation and destruction of the molecule, and radiative pumping in the far-infrared. These models yield gas kinetic temperatures comparable to those found for $T_{exc}$. The assignment of spectral features in the UV-blue range 3793-4054 Å may be of relevance for future studies aiming at unravelling spectra to identify interstellar molecules associated with the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs).

Effect of soil temperature on one-way optical frequency transfer through dense-wavelength-division-multiplexing fibre links

Results of optical frequency transfer over a carrier-grade dense-wavelength-division-multiplexing (DWDM) optical fibre network are presented. The relation between soil temperature changes on a buried optical fibre and frequency changes of an optical carrier through the fibre is modelled. Soil temperatures, measured at various depths by the Royal Netherlands Meteorology Institute (KNMI) are compared with observed frequency variations through this model. A comparison of a nine-day record of optical frequency measurements through the 2 x 298 km fibre link with soil temperature data shows qualitative agreement. A soil temperature model is used to predict the link stability over longer periods (days-months-years). We show that one-way optical frequency dissemination is sufficiently stable to distribute and compare e.g. rubidium frequency standards over standard DWDM optical fibre networks.

H$_2$ Lyman and Werner band lines and their sensitivity for a variation of the proton-electron mass ratio in the gravitational potential of white dwarfs

Recently an accurate analysis of absorption spectra of molecular hydrogen, observed with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph aboard the Hubble Space Telescope, in the photosphere of white dwarf stars GD133 and GD29-38 was published in a Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 123002 (2014)], yielding a constraint on a possible dependence of the proton-electron mass ratio on a gravitational field of strength 10,000 times that at the Earth's surface. In the present paper further details of that study are presented, in particular a re-evaluation of the spectrum of the $B^1Σ_u^+ - X^1Σ_g^+ (v',v'')$ Lyman bands relevant for the prevailing temperatures (12,000 - 14,000 K) of the photospheres. An emphasis is on the calculation of so-called $K_i$-coefficients, that represent the sensitivity of each individual line to a possible change in the proton-electron mass ratio. Such calculations were performed by semi-empirical methods and by ab initio methods providing accurate and consistent values. A full listing is provided for the molecular physics data on the Lyman bands (wavelengths $λ_i$, line oscillator strengths $f_i$, radiative damping rates $Γ_i$, and sensitivity coefficients $K_i$) as required for the analyses of H$_2$-spectra in hot dwarf stars. A similar listing of the molecular physics parameters for the $C^1Π_u - X^1Σ_g^+ (v',v'')$ Werner bands is provided for future use in the analysis of white dwarf spectra.

Ramsey-type microwave spectroscopy on CO ($a^3Π$)

Using a Ramsey-type setup, the lambda-doublet transition in the $J=1,\, Ω=1$ level of the $a^3Π$ state of CO was measured to be 394 064 870(10) Hz. In our molecular beam apparatus, a beam of metastable CO is prepared in a single quantum level by expanding CO into vacuum and exciting the molecules using a narrow-band UV laser system. After passing two microwave zones that are separated by 50 cm, the molecules are state-selectively deflected and detected 1 meter downstream on a position sensitive detector. In order to keep the molecules in a single $m_J^B$ level, a magnetic bias field is applied. We find the field-free transition frequency by taking the average of the $m_J^B = +1 \rightarrow m_J^B = +1$ and $m_J^B = -1 \rightarrow m_J^B = -1$ transitions, which have an almost equal but opposite Zeeman shift. The accuracy of this proof-of-principle experiment is a factor of 100 more accurate than the previous best value obtained for this transition.

The inhomogeneous ISM toward PKS1830-211 SW - A detailed view on molecular gas at a look-back time of 7.5 Gyr

Based on measurements with the Effelsberg 100-m telescope, a multi-line study of molecular species is presented toward the south-western source of the gravitational lens system PKS 1830-211, which is by far the best known target to study molecular gas in absorption at intermediate redshift. Determining line parameters and optical depths and performing Large Velocity Gradient radiative transfer calculations, the aims of this study are (1) to evaluate physical parameters of the absorbing foreground gas at z~0.89, in particular its homogeneity, and (2) to monitor the spectroscopic time variability caused by fluctuations of the z~2.5 background continuum source. We find, that the gas is quite inhomogeneous with n(H2)~2 x 10^3 cm^-3 for most molecular species but with higher values for H2CO and lower ones for SO. Measuring the CS J=1-0 transition during a time interval of more than a decade, from 2001 to 2012, the peak absorption depth of the line remains approximately constant, while the line shape undergoes notable variations. Covering the time between 1996 and 2013, CS, HCO+, and CH3OH data indicate maximal integrated optical depths in ~2001 and 2011/2012. This is compatible with a ~10 yr periodicity, which, however, needs confirmation by substantially longer time monitoring. Comparing molecular abundances with those of different types of Galactic and nearby extragalactic clouds we find that the observed cloud complex does not correspond to one particular type but to a variety of cloud types with more diffuse and denser components as can be expected for an observed region with a transverse linear scale of several parsec and a likely larger depth along the line-of-sight. A tentative detection of Galactic absorption in the c-C3H2 1(10)-1(01) line at 18.343 GHz is also reported.

Bounds on fifth forces at the sub-Angstrom length scale

Constraints on a possible fifth-force interaction between hadrons are derived based on an analysis of results from laser precision frequency measurements of antiprotonic helium atoms, both $\bar{p}\,^{4}$He$^{+}$ and $\bar{p}\,^{3}$He$^{+}$ species, and from experiments on resonant formation rates of $ddμ^{+}$-ions in muon-catalyzed fusion processes. A comparison is made between accurate experimental data and first-principles theoretical descriptions of the exotic systems within a quantum electrodynamical framework. The agreement between theory and experiment sets limits on a possible additional hadron-hadron interaction written in the form of a Yukawa potential $V_5(r)=α_5 \exp(-r/λ)/r$, with $λ$ representing the characteristic length scale associated with the mass of a hypothetical force-carrying particle via $λ=\hbar/(m_5c)$. The laser spectroscopic data of antiprotonic helium set a constraint of $α_5/α_{EM} < 10^{-8}$ for $λ< 1$ Å, while the binding energy of the muonic molecular deuterium ion delivers a constraint of $α_5/α_{EM} \sim 10^{-5}$ for $λ< 0.05$ Å, where $α_{EM}$ represents the strength of the electromagnetic interaction or the fine structure constant.

Bounds on fifth forces from precision measurements on molecules

Highly accurate results from frequency measurements on neutral hydrogen molecules H_2, HD and D_2 as well as the HD^+ ion can be interpreted in terms of constraints on possible fifth-force interactions. Where the hydrogen atom is a probe for yet unknown lepton-hadron interactions, and the helium atom is sensitive for lepton-lepton interactions, molecules open the domain to search for additional long-range hadron-hadron forces. First principles calculations in the framework of quantum electrodynamics have now advanced to the level that hydrogen molecules and hydrogen molecular ions have become calculable systems, making them a search-ground for fifth forces. Following a phenomenological treatment of unknown hadron-hadron interactions written in terms of a Yukawa potential of the form V_5(r)=βexp(-r/λ)/r current precision measurements on hydrogenic molecules yield a constraint β< 1 \times 10^{-7} eVÅfor long-range hadron-hadron interactions at typical force ranges commensurate with separations of a chemical bond, i.e. λ~1 Åand beyond.

Novel techniques in VUV high-resolution spectroscopy

Novel VUV sources and techniques for VUV spectroscopy are reviewed. Laser-based VUV sources have been developed via non-linear upconversion of laser pulses in the nanosecond (ns), the picosecond (ps), and femtosecond (fs) domain, and are applied in high-resolution gas phase spectroscopic studies. While the ns and ps pulsed laser sources, at Fourier-transform limited bandwidths, are used in wavelength scanning spectroscopy, the fs laser source is used in a two-pulse time delayed mode. In addition a Fourier-transform spectrometer for high resolution gas-phase spectroscopic studies in the VUV is described, exhibiting the multiplex advantage to measure many resonances simultaneously.

Precision spectroscopy of high rotational states in H_2 investigated by Doppler-free two-photon laser spectroscopy in the EF^1Σ_g^+ - X^1Σ_g^+ system

Recently a high precision spectroscopic investigation of the EF^1Σ_g^+ - X^1Σ_g^+ system of molecular hydrogen was reported yielding information on QED and relativistic effects in a sequence of rotational quantum states in the X^1Σ^+_g$ ground state of the H_2 molecule [E.J. Salumbides et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 043005 (2011)]. The present paper presents a more detailed description of the methods and results. Furthermore, the paper serves as a stepping stone towards a continuation of the previous study by extending the known level structure of the EF^1Σ^+_g state to highly excited rovibrational levels through Doppler-free two photon spectroscopy. Based on combination differences between vibrational levels in the ground state, and between three rotational branches (O, Q and S branches) assignments of excited EF^1Σ^+_g levels, involving high vibrational and rotational quantum numbers, can be unambiguously made. For the higher EF^1Σ^+_g levels, where no combination differences are available, calculations were performed using the multi-channel quantum defect method, for a broad class of vibrational and rotational levels up to J=19. These predictions were used for assigning high-J EF-levels and are found to be accurate within 5 cm^-1.

Synchrotron VUV radiation studies of the D^1Π_u State of H_2

The 3pπD^1Π_u state of the H_2 molecule was reinvestigated with different techniques at two synchrotron installations. The Fourier-Transform spectrometer in the vacuum ultraviolet wavelength range of the DESIRS beamline at the SOLEIL synchrotron was used for recording absorption spectra of the D^1Π_u state at high resolution and high absolute accuracy, limited only by the Doppler contribution at 100 K. From these measurements line positions were extracted, in particular for the narrow resonances involving ^1Π_u^- states, with an accuracy estimated at 0.06 cm^{-1} . The new data also closely match MQDT-calculations performed for the Π^- components observed via the narrow Q-lines. The Λ-doubling in the D^1Π_u state was determined up to v=17. The 10 m normal incidence scanning monochromator at the beamline U125/2 of the BESSY II synchrotron, combined with a home built target chamber and equipped with a variety of detectors was used to unravel information on ionization, dissociation and intramolecular fluorescence decay for the D^1Π_u vibrational series. The combined results yield accurate information of the characteristic Beutler-Fano profiles associated with the strongly predissociated Π_u^+ parity components of the D^1Π_u-levels. Values for the parameters describing the predissociation width as well as the Fano-q line shape parameters for the J=1 and J=2 rotational states were determined for the sequence of vibrational quantum numbers up to v=17.

The D^1Π state of HD and the mass scaling relation of its predissociation widths

Absorption spectra of HD have been recorded in the wavelength range of 75 to 90 nm at 100 K using the vacuum ultraviolet Fourier transform spectrometer at the Synchrotron SOLEIL. The present wavelength resolution represents an order of magnitude improvement over that of previous studies. We present a detailed study of the D^1Π- X^1Σ^+_g system observed up to v'=18. The Q-branch transitions probing levels of Π^- symmetry are observed as narrow resonances limited by the Doppler width at 100 K. Line positions for these transitions are determined to an estimated absolute accuracy of 0.06 cm^{-1} . Predissociation line widths of Π^+ levels are extracted from the absorption spectra. A comparison with the recent results on a study of the D^1Πstate in H_2 and D_2 reveals that the predissociation widths scale as μ^-2J(J+1), with μthe reduced mass of the molecule and J the rotational angular momentum quantum number, as expected from an interaction with the B'^1Σ_u^+ continuum causing the predissociation.

VUV Spectroscopic Study of the BB" 1Su+ State of H2

Spectral lines, probing rotational quantum states J'=0,1,2 of the inner well vibrations (v' =< 8) in the BB" 1Su+ state of molecular hydrogen, were recorded in high resolution using a vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) Fourier transform absorption spectrometer in the wavelength range 73-86 nm. Accurate line positions and predissociation widths are determined from a fit to the absorption spectra. Improved values for the line positions are obtained, while the predissociation widths agree well with previous investigations.

VUV Spectroscopic Study of the D^1ΠState of Molecular Deuterium

The D^1Π_u - X^1Σ_g^+ absorption system of molecular deuterium has been re-investigated using the VUV Fourier -Transform (FT) spectrometer at the DESIRS beamline of the synchrotron SOLEIL and photon-induced fluorescence spectrometry (PIFS) using the 10 m normal incidence monochromator at the synchrotron BESSY II. Using the FT spectrometer absorption spectra in the range 72 - 82 nm were recorded in quasi static gas at 100 K and in a free flowing jet at a spectroscopic resolution of 0.50 and 0.20 cm^{-1} respectively . The narrow Q-branch transitions, probing states of Π^- symmetry, were observed up to vibrational level v = 22. The states of Π^+ symmetry, known to be broadened due to predissociation and giving rise to asymmetric Beutler-Fano resonances, were studied up to v = 18. The 10 m normal incidence beamline setup at BESSY II was used to simultaneously record absorption, dissociation, ionization and fluorescence decay channels from which information on the line intensities, predissociated widths, and Fano q-parameters were extracted. R-branch transitions were observed up to v = 23 for J = 1-3 as well as several transitions for J = 4 and 5 up to v = 22 and 18 respectively. The Q-branch transitions are found to weakly predissociate and were observed from v = 8 to the final vibrational level of the state v = 23. The spectroscopic study is supported by two theoretical frameworks. Results on the Π^- symmetry states are compared to ab initio multi-channel-quantum defect theory (MQDT) calculations, demonstrating that these calculations are accurate to within 0.5 cm^-1.

High-resolution Fourier-transform XUV photoabsorption spectroscopy of 14N15N

The first comprehensive high-resolution photoabsorption spectrum of 14N15N has been recorded using the Fourier-transform spectrometer attached to the Desirs beamline at the Soleil synchrotron. Observations are made in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) and span 100,000-109,000 cm-1 (100-91.7 nm). The observed absorption lines have been assigned to 25 bands and reduced to a set of transition energies, f values, and linewidths. This analysis has verified the predictions of a theoretical model of N2 that simulates its photoabsorption and photodissociation cross section by solution of an isotopomer independent formulation of the coupled-channel Schroedinger equation. The mass dependence of predissociation linewidths and oscillator strengths is clearly evident and many local perturbations of transition energies, strengths, and widths within individual rotational series have been observed.

The CO A-X System for Constraining Cosmological Drift of the Proton-Electron Mass Ratio

The $\textrm{A}^1Π-\textrm{X}^1Σ^+$ band system of carbon monoxide, which has been detected in six highly redshifted galaxies ($z=1.6-2.7$), is identified as a novel probe method to search for possible variations of the proton-electron mass ratio ($μ$) on cosmological time scales. Laboratory wavelengths of the spectral lines of the A-X ($v$,0) bands for $v=0-9$ have been determined at an accuracy of $Δλ/λ=1.5 \times 10^{-7}$ through VUV Fourier-transform absorption spectroscopy, providing a comprehensive and accurate zero-redshift data set. For the (0,0) and (1,0) bands, two-photon Doppler-free laser spectroscopy has been applied at the $3 \times 10^{-8}$ accuracy level, verifying the absorption data. Sensitivity coefficients $K_μ$ for a varying $μ$ have been calculated for the CO A-X bands, so that an operational method results to search for $μ$-variation.

QED effects in molecules: test on rotational quantum states of H$_2$

Quantum electrodynamic effects have been systematically tested in the progression of rotational quantum states in the $X ^{1}Σ_{g}^{+}, v=0$ vibronic ground state of molecular hydrogen. High-precision Doppler-free spectroscopy of the $EF ^{1}Σ_{g}^{+} - X ^{1}Σ_{g}^{+}$ (0,0) band was performed with 0.005 cm$^{-1}$ accuracy on rotationally-hot H$_2$ (with rotational quantum states J up to 16). QED and relativistic contributions to rotational level energies as high as 0.13 cm$^{-1}$ are extracted, and are in perfect agreement with recent calculations of QED and high-order relativistic effects for the H$_2$ ground state.

A High-Velocity Narrow Absorption Line Outflow in the Quasar J212329.46-005052.9

We report on a variable high-velocity narrow absorption line outflow in the redshift 2.3 quasar J2123-0050. Five distinct outflow systems are detected with velocity shifts from -9710 to -14,050 km/s and CIV 1548,1551 line widths of FWHM = 62-164 km/s. These data require five distinct outflow structures with similar kinematics, physical conditions and characteristic sizes of order 0.01-0.02 pc. The most likely location is ~5 pc from the quasar. The coordinated line variations in <0.63 yr (rest) are best explained by global changes in the outflow ionization caused by changes in the quasar's ionizing flux. The absence of strong X-ray absorption shows that radiative shielding is not needed to maintain the moderate ionizations and therefore, apparently, it is not needed to facilitate the radiative acceleration to high speeds. The kinetic energy yield of this flow is at least two orders of magnitude too low to be important for feedback to the host galaxy's evolution.

Cosmological concordance or chemical coincidence? Deuterated molecular hydrogen abundances at high redshift

We report two detections of deuterated molecular hydrogen (HD) in QSO absorption-line systems at $z > 2$. Toward J2123-0500, we find $N$(HD) $= 13.84 \pm 0.2$ for a sub-DLA with metallicity $\simeq 0.5Z_{\odot}$ and $N$(H$_2$) = $17.64 \pm 0.15$ at $z = 2.0594$. Toward FJ0812+32, we find $N$(HD) $= 15.38 \pm 0.3$ for a solar-metallicity DLA with $N$(H$_2$) = $19.88 \pm 0.2$ at $z = 2.6265$. These systems have ratios of HD to H$_2$ above that observed in dense clouds within the Milky Way disk and apparently consistent with a simple conversion from the cosmological ratio of D/H. These ratios are not readily explained by any available model of HD chemistry and there are no obvious trends with metallicity or molecular content. Taken together, these two systems and the two published $z > 2$ HD-bearing DLAs indicate that HD is either less effectively dissociated or more efficiently produced in high-redshift interstellar gas, even at low molecular fraction and/or solar metallicity. It is puzzling that such diverse systems should show such consistent HD/H$_2$ ratios. Without clear knowledge of all the aspects of HD chemistry that may help determine the ratio HD/H$_2$, we conclude that these systems are potentially more revealing of gas chemistry than of D/H itself and that it is premature to use such systems to constrain D/H at high-redshift.
