Phase Diagram for Magnon Condensate in Yttrium Iron Garnet Film

Recently, magnons, which are quasiparticles describing the collective motion of spins, were found to undergo Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) at room temperature in films of Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG). Unlike other quasiparticle BEC systems, this system has a spectrum with two degenerate minima, which makes it possible for the system to have two condensates in momentum space. Recent Brillouin Light scattering studies for a microwave-pumped YIG film of thickness d=5 $μ$m and field H=1 kOe find a low-contrast interference pattern at the characteristic wavevector $Q$ of the magnon energy minimum. In this report, we show that this modulation pattern can be quantitatively explained as due to non-symmetric but coherent Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons into the two energy minima. Our theory predicts a transition from a high-contrast symmetric phase to a low-contrast non-symmetric phase on varying the $d$ and $H$, and a new type of collective oscillations.

Spin Accumulation at Ferromagnet/Non-magnetic Material Interfaces

Many proposed and realized spintronic devices involve spin injection and accumulation at an interface between a ferromagnet and a non-magnetic material. We examine the electric field, voltage profile, charge distribution, spin fluxes, and spin accumulation at such an interface. We include the effects of both screening and spin scattering. We also include both the spin-dependent chemical potentials μ_{\uparrow,\downarrow} and the effective magnetic field H* that is zero in equilibrium. For a Co/Cu interface, we find that the spin accumulation in the copper is an order of magnitude larger when both chemical potential and effective magnetic field are included. We also show that screening contributes to the spin accumulation in the ferromagnet; this contribution can be significant.

Zero BEC State Amplitude, and BEC Unnecessary to Define Phase ϕ

We define the "BEC state" to be the many-body wavefunction where all particles are in the same one-body state. Using an argument analogous to Anderson's Orthogonality Catastrophe, we argue that for interacting particles the amplitude of the BEC state within the many-body wavefunction goes to zero in the thermodynamic limit. This does not mean that there is no condensate. However, we argue that, if the excitations satisfy the Landau criterion, then the absence of a finite amplitude for the BEC state, or the absence of a condensate, do not prevent the definition of the phase function ϕ, from which the superfluid velocity follows.

Spin Resonance and dc Current Generation in a Quantum Wire

We show that in a quantum wire the spin-orbit interaction leads to a narrow spin resonance at low temperatures, even in the absence of an external magnetic field. A relatively weak dc magnetic field of a definite direction strongly increases the resonance absorption. Linearly polarized resonance radiation produces dynamic magnetization as well as electric and spin currents. The effect strongly depends on the external magnetic field.
