Coupling of shape and pairing vibrations in a collective Hamiltonian based on nuclear energy density functionals

The quadrupole collective Hamiltonian, based on relativistic energy density functionals, is extended to include a pairing collective coordinate. In addition to quadrupole shape vibrations and rotations, the model describes pairing vibrations and the coupling between shape and pairing degrees of freedom. The parameters of the collective Hamiltonian are determined by constrained self-consistent relativistic mean-field plus Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (RMF+BCS) calculations in the space of intrinsic shape and pairing deformations. The effect of coupling between shape and pairing degrees of freedom is analyzed in a study of low-energy spectra and transition rates of four axially symmetric $N=92$ rare-earth isotones. When compared to results obtained with the standard quadrupole collective Hamiltonian, the inclusion of dynamical pairing increases the moment of inertia, lowers the energies of excited $0^+$ states and reduces the E0-transition strengths, in better agreement with data.

Covariant density functional analysis of shape evolution in $N =40$ isotones

The structure of low-lying excitation states of even-even $N=40$ isotones is studied using a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian with the collective parameters determined from the relativistic mean-field plus BCS method with the PC-PK1 functional in the particle-hole channel and a separable paring force in the particle-particle channel. The theoretical calculations can reproduce not only the systematics of the low-lying states along the isotonic chain but also the detailed structure of the spectroscopy in a single nucleus. We find a picture of spherical-oblate-prolate shape transition along the isotonic chain of $N=40$ by analyzing the potential energy surfaces. The coexistence of low-lying excited $0^+$ states has also been shown to be a common feature in neutron-deficient $N=40$ isotones.

$β$-decay half-lives of neutron-rich nuclei and matter flow in the $r$-process

The $β$-decay half-lives of neutron-rich nuclei with $20 \leqslant Z \leqslant 50$ are systematically investigated using the newly developed fully self-consistent proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA), based on the spherical relativistic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (RHFB) framework. Available data are reproduced by including an isospin-dependent proton-neutron pairing interaction in the isoscalar channel of the RHFB+QRPA model. With the calculated $β$-decay half-lives of neutron-rich nuclei a remarkable speeding up of $r$-matter flow is predicted. This leads to enhanced $r$-process abundances of elements with $A \gtrsim 140$, an important result for the understanding of the origin of heavy elements in the universe.

Effect of pairing correlations on nuclear low-energy structure: BCS and general Bogoliubov transformation

Low-lying nuclear states of Sm isotopes are studied in the framework of a collective Hamiltonian based on covariant energy density functional theory. Pairing correlation are treated by both BCS and Bogoliubov methods. It is found that the pairing correlations deduced from relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (RHB) calculations are generally stronger than those by relativistic mean-field plus BCS (RMF+BCS) with same pairing force. By simply renormalizing the pairing strength, the diagonal part of the pairing field is changed in such a way that the essential effects of the off-diagonal parts of the pairing field neglected in the RMF+BCS calculations can be recovered, and consequently the low-energy structure is in a good agreement with the predictions of the RHB model.

Nuclear effective charge factor originating from covariant density functional theory

Guiding by the relativistic local density approximation, we explore a phenomenological formula for the coupling strength of Coulomb field to take into account the Coulomb exchange term effectively in the relativistic Hartree approximation. Its validity in finite nuclei is examined by comparing with the exact treatment of the Coulomb exchange energies in the relativistic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach. It is found that the exact Coulomb exchange energies can be reproduced by employing the phenomenological formula with the relative deviations less than 1% for semi-magic Ca, Ni, Sn, and Pb isotopes. Furthermore, we check the applicability of the phenomenological formula for the effective interactions in the relativistic Hartree approach by investigating the binding energy differences of mirror nuclei.

Hyperon effects in covariant density functional theory with recent astrophysical observations

Motivated by recent observational data, the equations of state with the inclusion of strangeness-bearing $Λ$-hyperons and the corresponding properties of neutron stars are studied, based on the covariant density functional (CDF) theory. To this end, we specifically employ the density dependent relativistic Hartree-Fock (DDRHF) theory and the relativistic mean field theory (RMF). The inclusion of $Λ$-hyperons in neutron stars shows substantial effects in softening the equation of state. Because of the extra suppression effect originated from the Fock channel, large reductions on both the star mass and radius are predicted by the DDRHF calculations. It is also found that the mass-radius relations of neutron stars with $Λ$-hyperons determined by DDRHF with the PKA1 parameter set are in fairly good agreement with the observational data where a relatively small neutron stars radius is required. Therefore, it is expected that the exotic degrees of freedom such as the strangeness-bearing structure may appear and play significant roles inside the neutron stars, which is supported further by the systematical investigations on the consistency between the maximum neutron star mass and $Λ$-coupling strength.
