Coupled Channel Analysis of pˉp→π0π0η\bar{p} p \rightarrow π^0 π^0 η, π0ηηπ^0 ηη and K+K−π0K^+ K^- π^0 at 900 MeV/cMeV/c and of ππππ-Scattering Data

A partial wave analysis of antiproton-proton annihilation data in flight at 900 MeV/cMeV/c into π0π0ηπ^0 π^0 η , π0ηηπ^0 ηη and K+K−π0K^+ K^- π^0 is presented. The data were taken at LEAR by the Crystal Barrel experiment in 1996. The three channels have been coupled together with ππππ-scattering isospin I=0 S- and D-wave as well as I=1 P-wave data utilizing the K-matrix approach. Analyticity is treated using Chew-Mandelstam functions. In the fit all ingredients of the K-matrix, including resonance masses and widths, were treated as free parameters. In spite of the large number of parameters, the fit results are in the ballpark of the values published by the Particle Data Group. In the channel π0π0ηπ^0 π^0 η a significant contribution of the spin exotic IG=1−I^G=1^- JPC=1−+J^{PC}=1^{-+} π1π_1-wave with a coupling to π0ηπ^0 η is observed. Furthermore the contributions of ϕ(1020)π0ϕ(1020) π^0 and K∗(892)±K∓K^*(892)^\pm K^\mp in the channel K+K−π0K^+ K^- π^0 have been studied in detail. The differential production cross section for the two reactions and the spin-density-matrix elements for the ϕ(1020)ϕ(1020) and K∗(892)±K^*(892)^\pm have been extracted. No spin-alignment is observed for both vector mesons. The spin density matrix elements have been also determined for the spin exotic wave.

Longitudinal double spin asymmetries in single hadron quasi-real photoproduction at high pTp_T

We measured the longitudinal double spin asymmetries ALLA_{LL} for single hadron muo-production off protons and deuterons at photon virtuality Q2Q^2 < 1(GeV/c\it c)2^2 for transverse hadron momenta pTp_T in the range 0.7 GeV/c\it c to 4 GeV/c\it c . They were determined using COMPASS data taken with a polarised muon beam of 160 GeV/c\it c or 200 GeV/c\it c impinging on polarised 6LiD\mathrm{{}^6LiD} or NH3\mathrm{NH_3} targets. The experimental asymmetries are compared to next-to-leading order pQCD calculations, and are sensitive to the gluon polarisation ΔGΔG inside the nucleon in the range of the nucleon momentum fraction carried by gluons 0.05<xg<0.20.05 < x_g < 0.2.

Exclusive rho^0 muoproduction on transversely polarised protons and deuterons

The transverse target spin azimuthal asymmetry A_UT in hard exclusive production of rho^0 mesons was measured at COMPASS by scattering 160 GeV/c muons off transversely polarised protons and deuterons. The measured asymmetry is sensitive to the nucleon helicity-flip generalised parton distributions E^q, which are related to the orbital angular momentum of quarks in the nucleon. The Q^2, x_B and p_t^2 dependence of A_UT is presented in a wide kinematic range. Results for deuterons are obtained for the first time. The measured asymmetry is small in the whole kinematic range for both protons and deuterons, which is consistent with the theoretical interpretation that contributions from GPDs E^u and E^d approximately cancel.

First Measurement of Chiral Dynamics in π^- γ-> π^- π^- π^+

The COMPASS collaboration at CERN has investigated the π^- γ-> π^- π^- π^+ reaction at center-of-momentum energy below five pion masses, sqrt(s) < 5 m(π), embedded in the Primakoff reaction of 190 GeV pions impinging on a lead target. Exchange of quasi-real photons is selected by isolating the sharp Coulomb peak observed at smallest momentum transfers, t' < 0.001 (GeV/c)^2. Using partial-wave analysis techniques, the scattering intensity of Coulomb production described in terms of chiral dynamics and its dependence on the 3π-invariant mass m(3π) = sqrt(s) were extracted. The absolute cross section was determined in seven bins of s\sqrt{s} with an overall precision of 20%. At leading order, the result is found to be in good agreement with the prediction of chiral perturbation theory over the whole energy range investigated.

Large-Area Sandwich Veto Detector with WLS Fibre Readout for Hadron Spectroscopy at COMPASS

A sandwich detector composed of scintillator and steel-covered lead layers was introduced in the fixed-target COMPASS experiment at CERN for vetoing events not completely covered by the two-stage magnetic spectrometer. Wavelength shifting fibres glued into grooves in the scintillator tiles serve for fast read-out. Minimum ionizing particles impinging on the 2m×2m2 \textrm{m} \times 2 \textrm{m} detector outside of a central hole, sparing the spectrometer's entry, are detected with a probability of 98%. The response to charged particles and photons is modeled in detail in Monte Carlo calculations. Figures of merit of the veto trigger in 190GeV/c190 \textrm{GeV}/c π−+pπ^- + p (or nucleus) experiments are an enrichment of exclusive events in the recorded data by a factor of 3.5 and a false-veto probability of 1%.

Collins and Sivers asymmetries for pions and kaons in muon-deuteron DIS

The measurements of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries of identified hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering of 160 GeV/c muons on a transversely polarised 6LiD target at COMPASS are presented. The results for charged pions and charged and neutral kaons correspond to all data available, which were collected from 2002 to 2004. For all final state particles both the Collins and Sivers asymmetries turn out to be small, compatible with zero within the statistical errors, in line with the previously published results for not identified charged hadrons, and with the expected cancellation between the u- and d-quark contributions.
