CUORE-0 results and prospects for the CUORE experiment

With 741 kg of TeO2 crystals and an excellent energy resolution of 5 keV (0.2%) at the region of interest, the CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) experiment aims at searching for neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te with unprecedented sensitivity. Expected to start data taking in 2015, CUORE is currently in an advanced construction phase at LNGS. CUORE projected neutrinoless double beta decay half-life sensitivity is 1.6E26 y at 1 sigma (9.5E25 y at the 90% confidence level), in five years of live time, corresponding to an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass in the range 40-100 meV (50-130 meV). Further background rejection with auxiliary bolometric detectors could improve CUORE sensitivity and competitiveness of bolometric detectors towards a full analysis of the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy. CUORE-0 was built to test and demonstrate the performance of the upcoming CUORE experiment. It consists of a single CUORE tower (52 TeO2 bolometers of 750 g each, arranged in a 13 floor structure) constructed strictly following CUORE recipes both for materials and assembly procedures. An experiment its own, CUORE-0 is expected to reach a sensitivity to the neutrinoless double beta decay half-life of 130Te around 3E24 y in one year of live time. We present an update of the data, corresponding to an exposure of 18.1 kg y. An analysis of the background indicates that the CUORE performance goal is satisfied while the sensitivity goal is within reach.

Different mechanism of two-proton emission from proton-rich nuclei 23^{23}Al and 22^{22}Mg

Two-proton relative momentum (qppq_{pp}) and opening angle (θppθ_{pp}) distributions from the three-body decay of two excited proton-rich nuclei, namely 23^{23}Al →\rightarrow p + p + 21^{21}Na and 22^{22}Mg →\rightarrow p + p + 20^{20}Ne, have been measured with the projectile fragment separator (RIPS) at the RIKEN RI Beam Factory. An evident peak at qpp∼20q_{pp}\sim20 MeV/c as well as a peak in θppθ_{pp} around 30∘^\circ are seen in the two-proton break-up channel from a highly-excited 22^{22}Mg. In contrast, such peaks are absent for the 23^{23}Al case. It is concluded that the two-proton emission mechanism of excited 22^{22}Mg is quite different from the 23^{23}Al case, with the former having a favorable diproton emission component at a highly excited state and the latter dominated by the sequential decay process.

Searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay of 130^{130}Te with CUORE

Neutrinoless double-beta (0νββ0νββ) decay is a hypothesized lepton-number-violating process that offers the only known means of asserting the possible Majorana nature of neutrino mass. The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is an upcoming experiment designed to search for 0νββ0νββ decay of 130^{130}Te using an array of 988 TeO2_2 crystal bolometers operated at 10 mK. The detector will contain 206 kg of 130^{130}Te and have an average energy resolution of 5 keV; the projected 0νββ0νββ decay half-life sensitivity after five years of live time is 1.6×10261.6\times 10^{26} y at 1σ1σ (9.5×10259.5\times10^{25} y at the 90% confidence level), which corresponds to an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass in the range 40--100 meV (50--130 meV). In this paper we review the experimental techniques used in CUORE as well as its current status and anticipated physics reach.

CUORE and beyond: bolometric techniques to explore inverted neutrino mass hierarchy

The CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) experiment will search for neutrinoless double beta decay of 130^{130}Te. With 741 kg of TeO2_2 crystals and an excellent energy resolution of 5 keV (0.2%) at the region of interest, CUORE will be one of the most competitive neutrinoless double beta decay experiments on the horizon. With five years of live time, CUORE projected neutrinoless double beta decay half-life sensitivity is 1.6×10261.6\times 10^{26} y at 1σ1σ (9.5×10259.5\times10^{25} y at the 90% confidence level), which corresponds to an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass in the range 40--100 meV (50--130 meV). Further background rejection with auxiliary light detector can significantly improve the search sensitivity and competitiveness of bolometric detectors to fully explore the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy with 130^{130}Te and possibly other double beta decay candidate nuclei.

Exploring the Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay in the Inverted Neutrino Hierarchy with Bolometric Detectors

Neutrinoless double beta decay (0nubb) is one of the most sensitive probes for physics beyond the Standard Model, providing unique information on the nature of neutrinos. In this paper we review the status and outlook for bolometric 0nubb decay searches. We summarize recent advances in background suppression demonstrated using bolometers with simultaneous readout of heat and light signals. We simulate several configurations of a future CUORE-like bolometer array which would utilize these improvements and present the sensitivity reach of a hypothetical next-generation bolometric 0nubb experiment. We demonstrate that a bolometric experiment with the isotope mass of about 1 ton is capable of reaching the sensitivity to the effective Majorana neutrino mass (|mee|) of order 10-20 meV, thus completely exploring the so-called inverted neutrino mass hierarchy region. We highlight the main challenges and identify priorities for an R&D program addressing them.

Initial performance of the CUORE-0 experiment

CUORE-0 is a cryogenic detector that uses an array of tellurium dioxide bolometers to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of ^{130}Te. We present the first data analysis with 7.1 kg y of total TeO_2 exposure focusing on background measurements and energy resolution. The background rates in the neutrinoless double-beta decay region of interest (2.47 to 2.57 MeV) and in the α background-dominated region (2.70 to 3.90 MeV) have been measured to be 0.071 \pm 0.011 and 0.019 \pm 0.002 counts/keV/kg/y, respectively. The latter result represents a factor of 6 improvement from a predecessor experiment, Cuoricino. The results verify our understanding of the background sources in CUORE-0, which is the basis of extrapolations to the full CUORE detector. The obtained energy resolution (full width at half maximum) in the region of interest is 5.7 keV. Based on the measured background rate and energy resolution in the region of interest, CUORE-0 half-life sensitivity is expected to surpass the observed lower bound of Cuoricino with one year of live time.

Investigation of thermonuclear 18^{18}Ne(αα,pp)21^{21}Na rate via resonant elastic scattering of 21^{21}Na+pp

The 18^{18}Ne(αα,pp)21^{21}Na reaction is thought to be one of the key breakout reactions from the hot CNO cycles to the rp-process in type I x-ray bursts. In this work, the resonant properties of the compound nucleus 22^{22}Mg have been investigated by measuring the resonant elastic scattering of 21^{21}Na+pp. An 89 MeV 21^{21}Na radioactive beam delivered from the CNS Radioactive Ion Beam Separator bombarded an 8.8 mg/cm2^2 thick polyethylene (CH2_{2})n_{n} target. The 21^{21}Na beam intensity was about 2×\times105^{5} pps, with a purity of about 70% on target. The recoiled protons were measured at the center-of-mass scattering angles of θc.m.θ_{c.m.}≈\approx175.2∘{^\circ}, 152.2∘{^\circ}, and 150.5∘{^\circ} by three sets of ΔEΔE-EE telescopes, respectively. The excitation function was obtained with the thick-target method over energies ExE_x(22^{22}Mg)=5.5--9.2 MeV. In total, 23 states above the proton-threshold in 22^{22}Mg were observed, and their resonant parameters were determined via an RR-matrix analysis of the excitation functions. We have made several new JπJ^π assignments and confirmed some tentative assignments made in previous work. The thermonuclear 18^{18}Ne(αα,pp)21^{21}Na rate has been recalculated based on our recommended spin-parity assignments. The astrophysical impact of our new rate has been investigated through one-zone postprocessing x-ray burst calculations. We find that the 18^{18}Ne(αα,pp)21^{21}Na rate significantly affects the peak nuclear energy generation rate, reaction fluxes, as well as the onset temperature of this breakout reaction in these astrophysical phenomena.

Search for 14.4 keV solar axions from M1 transition of Fe-57 with CUORE crystals

We report the results of a search for axions from the 14.4 keV M1 transition from Fe-57 in the core of the sun using the axio-electric effect in TeO2 bolometers. The detectors are 5x5x5 cm3 crystals operated at about 10 mK in a facility used to test bolometers for the CUORE experiment at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. An analysis of 43.65 kg d of data was made using a newly developed low energy trigger which was optimized to reduce the detectors energy threshold. An upper limit of 0.63 c kg-1 d-1 was established at 95% C.L.. From this value, a lower bound at 95% C.L. was placed on the Peccei-Quinn energy scale of fa >= 0.76 10**6 GeV for a value of S=0.55 for the flavor-singlet axial vector matrix element. Bounds are given for the interval 0.15 < S < 0.55.

Sensitivity and Discovery Potential of CUORE to Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay

We present a study of the sensitivity and discovery potential of CUORE, a bolometric double-beta decay experiment under construction at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. Two approaches to the computation of experimental sensitivity for various background scenarios are presented, and an extension of the sensitivity formulation to the discovery potential case is also discussed. Assuming a background rate of 10^-2 cts/(keV kg y), we find that, after 5 years of live time, CUORE has a 1 sigma sensitivity to the neutrinoless double-beta decay half-life of T_1/2(1 sigma) = 1.6 \times 10^26 y and thus a potential to probe the effective Majorana neutrino mass down to 40-100 meV; the sensitivity at 1.64 sigma, which corresponds to 90% C.L., will be T_1/2(1.64 sigma) = 9.5 \times 10^25 y. This range is compared with the claim of observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay in 76Ge and the preferred range of the neutrino mass parameter space from oscillation results.

The 18Ne(a,p)21Na breakout reaction in x-ray bursts: experimental determination of spin-parities for alpha resonances in 22Mg via resonant elastic scattering of 21Na+p

The 18^{18}Ne(αα,pp)21^{21}Na reaction provides a pathway for breakout from the hot CNO cycles to the rprp-process in type I x-ray bursts. To better determine this astrophysical reaction rate, the resonance parameters of the compound nucleus 22^{22}Mg have been investigated by measuring the resonant elastic scattering of 21^{21}Na+pp. An 89 MeV 21^{21}Na radioactive ion beam was produced at the CNS Radioactive Ion Beam Separator and bombarded an 8.8 mg/cm2^2 thick polyethylene target. The recoiled protons were measured at scattering angles of θc.m.θ_{c.m.}≈175∘\approx 175 {^\circ} and 152∘{^\circ} by three ΔEΔE-EE silicon telescopes. The excitation function was obtained with a thick-target method over energies ExE_x(22^{22}Mg)=5.5--9.2 MeV. The resonance parameters have been determined through an RR-matrix analysis. For the first time, the JπJ^π values for ten states above the alpha threshold in 22^{22}Mg have been experimentally determined in a single consistent measurement. We have made three new JπJ^π assignments and confirmed seven of the ten tentative assignments in the previous work. The 18^{18}Ne(αα,pp)21^{21}Na reaction rate has been recalculated, and the astrophysical impact of our new rate has been investigated through one-zone postprocessing x-ray burst calculations. We find that the 18^{18}Ne(αα,pp)21^{21}Na rate significantly affects the peak nuclear energy generation rate and the onset temperature of this breakout reaction in these phenomena.

The low energy spectrum of TeO2 bolometers: results and dark matter perspectives for the CUORE-0 and CUORE experiments

We collected 19.4 days of data from four 750 g TeO2 bolometers, and in three of them we were able to set the energy threshold around 3 keV using a new analysis technique. We found a background rate ranging from 25 cpd/keV/kg at 3 keV to 2 cpd/keV/kg at 25 keV, and a peak at 4.7 keV. The origin of this peak is presently unknown, but its presence is confirmed by a reanalysis of 62.7 kg.days of data from the finished CUORICINO experiment. Finally, we report the expected sensitivities of the CUORE0 (52 bolometers) and CUORE (988 bolometers) experiments to a WIMP annual modulation signal.

Hard photon flow and photon-photon correlation in intermediate energy heavy-ion collisions

Hard photons emitted from energetic heavy ion collisions are very interesting since they do not experience nuclear interaction, and therefore they are useful to explore properties of nuclear matter. We investigated hard photon production and its properties in intermediate energy heavy-ion collisions with the help of the Blotzmann-Uehling-Ulenbeck model. Two components of hard photons are discussed: direct and thermal. The positive directed flow parameter and negative elliptic flow parameter of direct photons are demonstrated and they are anti-correlated to the flows of free protons. The dependencies of hard photon production and anisotropic parameters on impact parameter, beam energy, nuclear equation of state and symmetry energy are also discussed. Furthermore, we investigated the two-photon momentum correlation function from which the space-time structure information of the photon source could be extracted as well as the two-photon azimuthal correlation which could provide another good method to determine the elliptic flow parameter v2v_{2} of direct hard photons.

CUORE crystal validation runs: results on radioactive contamination and extrapolation to CUORE background

The CUORE Crystal Validation Runs (CCVRs) have been carried out since the end of 2008 at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories, in order to test the performances and the radiopurity of the TeO2_2 crystals produced at SICCAS (Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences) for the CUORE experiment. In this work the results of the first 5 validation runs are presented. Results have been obtained for bulk contaminations and surface contaminations from several nuclides. An extrapolation to the CUORE background has been performed.

Influence of statistical sequential decay on isoscaling and symmetry energy coefficient in a GEMINI simulation

Extensive calculations on isoscaling behavior with the sequential-decay model gemini are performed for the medium-to-heavy nuclei in the mass range A = 60-120 at excitation energies up to 3 MeV/nucleon. The comparison between the products after the first-step decay and the ones after the entire-steps decay demonstrates that there exists a strong sequential decay effect on the final isoscaling parameters and the apparent temperature. Results show that the apparent symmetry energy coefficient γappγ_{app} does not reflect the initial symmetry energy coefficient CsymC_{sym} embedded in the mass calculation in the present GEMINI model.

Unified Description of Nuclear Stopping in Central Heavy-ion Collision from 10AA MeV to 1.2AA GeV

The detailed analysis of wide excitation function of nuclear stopping has been studied within a transport model, Isospin-dependent Quantum Molecular Dynamics model (IQMD) and an overall good agreement with the INDRA and FOPI experimental data has been achieved. It is found that mean value of isotropy in central Heavy-Ion Collision (HIC) reaches a minimum near Fermi energy and approaches a maximum around 300 - 400AA MeV. This suggests that, in statistical average, the equilibration is far from being reached even in central HIC especially near Fermi energy. A hierarchy in stopping of fragments, which favors heavy fragments to penetrate, provides a robust restriction on the global trend of nuclear stopping and could serve as a probe for nuclear equation of state.

Dynamical dipole γγ radiation in heavy-ion collisions on the basis of the quantum molecular dynamics model

Dynamical dipole γγ-ray emission in heavy-ion collisions is explored in the framework of the quantum molecular dynamics model. The studies are focused on systems of 40^{40}Ca bombarding 48^{48}Ca and its isotopes at different incident energies and impact parameters. Yields of γγ rays are calculated and the centroid energy and dynamical dipole emission width of the γγ spectra are extracted to investigate the properties of γγ emission. In addition, sensitivities of dynamical dipole γγ-ray emission to the isospin and the symmetry energy coefficient of the equation of state are studied. The results show that detailed study of dynamical dipole γγ radiation can provide information on the equation of state and the symmetry energy around the normal nuclear density.

Investigation of excited states in 18^{18}Ne via resonant elastic scattering of 17^{17}F+p and its astrophysical implication in the stellar reaction of 14^{14}O(αα,pp)17^{17}F

Properties of proton resonances in 18^{18}Ne have been investigated efficiently by utilizing a technique of proton resonant elastic scattering with a 17^{17}F radioactive ion (RI) beam and a thick proton target. A 4.22~MeV/nucleon 17^{17}F RI beam was produced via a projectile-fragmentation reaction, and subsequently separated by a Radioactive Ion Beam Line in Lanzhou ({\tt RIBLL}). Energy spectra of the recoiled protons were measured by two sets of ΔΔE-E silicon telescope at center-of-mass scattering angles of θc.m.θ_{c.m.}≈\approx175∘{^\circ}±\pm5∘{^\circ}, θc.m.θ_{c.m.}≈\approx152∘{^\circ}±\pm8∘{^\circ}, respectively. Several proton resonances in 18^{18}Ne were observed, and their resonant parameters have been determined by an RR-matrix analysis of the differential cross sections in combination with the previous results. The resonant parameters are related to the reaction-rate calculation of the stellar 14^{14}O(αα,pp)17^{17}F reaction, which was thought to be the breakout reaction from the hot CNO cycles into the rprp-process in x-ray bursters. Here, JπJ^π=(3−^-, 2−^-) are tentatively assigned to the 6.15-MeV state which was thought the key 1−^- state previously. In addition, a doublet structure at 7.05 MeV are tentatively identified, and its contribution to the resonant reaction rate of 14^{14}O(αα,pp)17^{17}F could be enhanced by at least factors of about 4∼\sim6 in comparison with the previous estimation involving only a singlet. The present calculated resonant rates are much larger than those previous values, and it may imply that this breakout reaction could play a crucial role under x-ray bursters conditions.

Isoscaling behavior in 48,40^{48,40}Ca+9^{9}Be collisions at intermediate energy investigated by HIPSE model

The fragment production cross sections for 140 MeV/nucleon 48,40^{48,40}Ca+9+^{9}Be reactions have been calculated by the Heavy Ion Phase Space Exploration (HIPSE) model. Isoscaling behavior is observed. The isoscaling parameters αα and ββ for both heavy and light fragments from HIPSE model calculations are in good agreement with the experiment data. Studies show that the potential parameters in the HIPSE model have very small effect on the isoscaling parameters. The effect of the excitation energy and evaporation on the isoscaling behavior has also been discussed.

Neutron removal cross section as a measure of neutron skin

We study the relation between neutron removal cross section (σ−Nσ_{-N}) and neutron skin thickness for finite neutron rich nuclei using the statistical abrasion ablation (SAA) model. Different sizes of neutron skin are obtained by adjusting the diffuseness parameter of neutrons in the Fermi distribution. It is demonstrated that there is a good linear correlation between σ−Nσ_{-N} and the neutron skin thickness for neutron rich nuclei. Further analysis suggests that the relative increase of neutron removal cross section could be used as a quantitative measure for the neutron skin thickness in neutron rich nuclei.

The roles of deformation and orientation in heavy-ion collisions induced by light deformed nuclei at intermediate energy

The reaction dynamics of axisymmetric deformed 24^{24}Mg + 24^{24}Mg collisions have been investigated systematically by an isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics (IDQMD) model. It is found that different deformations and orientations result in apparently different properties of reaction dynamics. We revealed that some observables such as nuclear stopping power (RR), multiplicity of fragments, and elliptic flow are very sensitive to the initial deformations and orientations. There exists an eccentricity scaling of elliptic flow in central body-body collisions with different deformations. In addition, the tip-tip and body-body configurations turn out to be two extreme cases in central reaction dynamical process.

Dynamical and sequential decay effects on isoscaling and density dependence of the symmetry energy

The isoscaling properties of the primary and final products are studied via isospin dependent quantum molecular dynamics (IQMD) model and the followed sequential decay model GEMINI, respectively. It is found that the isoscaling parameters αα of both primary and final products keep no significant change for light fragments, but increases with the mass for intermediate and heavy products. The dynamical effects on isoscaling are exhibited by that αα value decreases a little with the evolution time of the system, and opposite trend for the heavy products. The secondary decay effects on isoscaling are reflected in the increasing of the αα value for the final products which experiences secondary decay process. Furthermore the density dependence of the symmetry energy has also been explored, it is observed that in the low densities the symmetry energy coefficient has the form of Csym(ρ)∼C0(ρ/ρ0)γC_{sym}(ρ)\sim C_{0}(ρ/ρ_{0})^γ, where γ=0.7∼1.3γ= 0.7 \sim 1.3 for both primary and final products, but C0C_{0} have different values for primary and final products. It is also suggested that it might be more reasonable to describe the density dependence of the symmetry energy coefficient by the Csym(ρ/ρ0)≈C1(ρ/ρ0)γsoft+C2(ρ/ρ0)γstiffC_{sym}(ρ/ρ_{0})\approx C_{1}(ρ/ρ_{0})^{γ_{soft}} + C_{2}(ρ/ρ_{0})^{γ_{stiff}} with γsoft≤1γ_{soft}\leq 1, γstiff≥1γ_{stiff}\geq 1 and C1,C2C_{1}, C_{2} constant parameters.

Isoscaling behavior in the Fission Dynamics

The fission processes of 112^{112}Sn + 112^{112}Sn and 116^{116}Sn + 116^{116}Sn are simulated with the combination of the Langevin equation and the statistical decay model. The masses of two fission fragments are given by assuming the process of symmetric fission or asymmetric fission by the Monte Carlo sampling with the Gaussian probability distribution. From the analysis to the isotopic/isotonic ratios of the fission fragments from both reactions, the isoscaling behavior has been observed and investigated in details. Isoscaling parameters αα and ββ are extracted as a function of the charge number and neutron number, respectively, in different width of the sampling Gaussian probability distribution. It seems that αα is sensitive to the width of fission probability distribution of the mass asymmetrical parameter but ββ is not. Both αα and ββ drop with the increasing of beam energy and the reduced friction parameter.
