Evidence for Zc±Z_{c}^{\pm} decays into the ρ±ηcρ^{\pm} η_{c} final state

We study e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collisions with a π+π−π0ηcπ^{+}π^{-}π^{0}η_{c} final state using data samples collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies s=4.226\sqrt{s}=4.226, 4.2584.258, 4.3584.358, 4.4164.416, and 4.6004.600 GeV. Evidence for the decay $\zcpm\to\rhopm\etac$ is reported with a statistical significance of 3.9σ3.9σ with various systematic uncertainties taken into account at s=4.226\sqrt{s} = 4.226 GeV, and the Born cross section times branching fraction $σ^{B}(\EE\to \pimp\zcpm)\times \BR(\zcpm\to\rhopm\etac)$ is measured to be (48±11±11) pb(48 \pm 11 \pm 11)\,\rm{pb}. The $\zcpm\to \rhopm\etac$ signal is not significant at the other center-of-mass energies and the corresponding upper limits are determined. In addition, no significant signal is observed in a search for $\zcppm\to ρ^{\pm}\etac$ with the same data samples. The ratios $R_{\zc}=\BR(\zcpm\to ρ^{\pm} \etac)/\BR(\zcpm\to π^{\pm} \jpsi)$ and $R_{\zcp}=\BR(\zcppm\to ρ^{\pm} \etac)/\BR(\zcppm\to π^{\pm} \hc)$ are obtained and used to discriminate between different theoretical interpretations of the $\zcpm$ and $\zcppm$.

Measurement of the e+e−→Σ0Σˉ0e^{+}e^{-}\toΣ^{0}\barΣ^{0} cross sections at center-of-mass energies from 2.38642.3864 to 3.02003.0200 GeV

The Born cross sections of e+e−→Σ0Σˉ0e^{+}e^{-}\to Σ^{0}\barΣ^{0} are measured at center-of-mass energies from 2.38642.3864 to 3.02003.0200 GeV using data samples with an integrated luminosity of 328.5328.5 pb−1^{-1} collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. The analysis makes use of a novel reconstruction method for energies near production threshold, while a single-tag method is employed at other center-of-mass energies. The measured cross sections are consistent with earlier results from BaBar, with a substantially improved precision. The cross-section lineshape can be well described by a perturbative QCD-driven energy function. In addition, the effective form factors of the Σ0Σ^{0} baryon are determined. The results provide precise experimental input for testing various theoretical predictions.

SiPM-matrix readout of two-phase argon detectors using electroluminescence in the visible and near infrared range

Proportional electroluminescence (EL) in noble gases is used in two-phase detectors for dark matter searches to record (in the gas phase) the ionization signal induced by particle scattering in the liquid phase. The "standard" EL mechanism is considered to be due to noble gas excimer emission in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV). In addition, there are two alternative mechanisms, producing light in the visible and near infrared (NIR) ranges. The first is due to bremsstrahlung of electrons scattered on neutral atoms ("neutral bremsstrahlung", NBrS). The second, responsible for electron avalanche scintillation in the NIR at higher electric fields, is due to transitions between excited atomic states. In this work, we have for the first time demonstrated two alternative techniques of the optical readout of two-phase argon detectors, in the visible and NIR range, using a silicon photomultiplier matrix and electroluminescence due to either neutral bremsstrahlung or avalanche scintillation. The amplitude yield and position resolution were measured for these readout techniques, which allowed to assess the detection threshold for electron and nuclear recoils in two-phase argon detectors for dark matter searches. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first practical application of the NBrS effect in detection science.

Σ+Σ^{+} and Σˉ−\barΣ^- polarization in the J/ψJ/ψ and ψ(3686)ψ(3686) decays

From 1310.6×1061310.6\times10^{6} J/ψJ/ψ and 448.1×106448.1\times10^{6} ψ(3686)ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII experiment, we report the first observation of Σ+Σ^{+} and Σˉ−\barΣ^{-} spin polarization in e+e−→J/ψ(ψ(3686))→Σ+Σˉ−e^+e^-\rightarrow J/ψ(ψ(3686)) \rightarrow Σ^{+} \barΣ^{-} decays. The relative phases of the form factors ΔΦΔΦ have been measured to be (−15.5±0.7±0.5)∘(-15.5\pm0.7\pm0.5)^{\circ} and (21.7±4.0±0.8)∘(21.7\pm4.0\pm0.8)^{\circ} with J/ψJ/ψ and ψ(3686)ψ(3686) data, respectively. The non-zero value of ΔΦΔΦ allows for a direct and simultaneous measurement of the decay asymmetry parameters of Σ+→pπ0 (α0=−0.998±0.037±0.009)Σ^{+}\rightarrow p π^{0}~(α_0 = -0.998\pm0.037\pm0.009) and Σˉ−→pˉπ0 (αˉ0=0.990±0.037±0.011)\barΣ^{-}\rightarrow \bar{p} π^{0}~(\barα_0 = 0.990\pm0.037\pm0.011), the latter value being determined for the first time. The average decay asymmetry, (α0−αˉ0)/2(α_{0} - \barα_{0})/2, is calculated to be −0.994±0.004±0.002-0.994\pm0.004\pm0.002. The CP asymmetry ACP,Σ=(α0+αˉ0)/(α0−αˉ0)=−0.004±0.037±0.010A_{\rm CP,Σ} = (α_0 + \barα_0)/(α_0 - \barα_0) = -0.004\pm0.037\pm0.010 is extracted for the first time, and is found to be consistent with CP conservation.

Analysis of the decay D0→KS0K+K−D^0\rightarrow K_{S}^{0} K^{+} K^{-}

Using a data sample of 2.93 fb−12.93~fb^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- collisions collected at s=3.773GeV\sqrt{s}=3.773 GeV in the BESIII experiment, we perform an analysis of the decay D0→KS0K+K−D^0\rightarrow K_{S}^{0} K^{+} K^{-}. The Dalitz plot is analyzed using 1856±451856\pm 45 flavor-tagged signal decays. We find that the Dalitz plot is well described by a set of six resonances: a0(980)0a_0(980)^0, a0(980)+a_0(980)^+, ϕ(1020)ϕ(1020), a2(1320)+a_2(1320)^+, a2(1320)−a_2(1320)^- and a0(1450)−a_0(1450)^-. Their magnitudes, phases and fit fractions are determined as well as the coupling of a0(980)a_0(980) to KKˉK\bar{K}, gKKˉ=3.77±0.24(stat.)±0.35(sys.)GeVg_{K\bar{K}}=3.77\pm 0.24\text{(stat.)}\pm0.35\text{(sys.)} GeV. The branching fraction of the decay D0→KS0K+K−D^0\rightarrow K_{S}^{0} K^{+} K^{-} is measured using 11660±11811660\pm 118 untagged signal decays to be (4.51±0.05(stat.)±0.16(sys.))10−3(4.51\pm 0.05\text{(stat.)}\pm 0.16\text{(sys.)})10^{-3}. Both measurements are limited by their systematic uncertainties.

Cross section measurement of e+e−→η′J/ψe^+e^- \rightarrow η'J/ψ from s=4.178\sqrt{s} = 4.178 to 4.6004.600 GeV

The cross section of the process e+e−→η′J/ψe^+e^- \rightarrow η'J/ψ is measured at center-of-mass energies from s=\sqrt{s} = 4.178 to 4.600 GeV using data samples corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 11 fb−1^{-1} collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. The dependence of the cross section on s\sqrt{s} shows an enhancement around 4.24.2 GeV. While the shape of the cross section cannot be fully explained with a single ψ(4160)ψ(4160) or ψ(4260)ψ(4260) state, a coherent sum of the two states does provide a reasonable description of the data.

Design and construction of a new detector to measure ultra-low radioactive-isotope contamination of argon

Large liquid argon detectors offer one of the best avenues for the detection of galactic weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) via their scattering on atomic nuclei. The liquid argon target allows exquisite discrimination between nuclear and electron recoil signals via pulse-shape discrimination of the scintillation signals. Atmospheric argon (AAr), however, has a naturally occurring radioactive isotope, 39^{39}Ar, a ββ emitter of cosmogenic origin. For large detectors, the atmospheric 39^{39}Ar activity poses pile-up concerns. The use of argon extracted from underground wells, deprived of 39^{39}Ar, is key to the physics potential of these experiments. The DarkSide-20k dark matter search experiment will operate a dual-phase time projection chamber with 50 tonnes of radio-pure underground argon (UAr), that was shown to be depleted of 39^{39}Ar with respect to AAr by a factor larger than 1400. Assessing the 39^{39}Ar content of the UAr during extraction is crucial for the success of DarkSide-20k, as well as for future experiments of the Global Argon Dark Matter Collaboration (GADMC). This will be carried out by the DArT in ArDM experiment, a small chamber made with extremely radio-pure materials that will be placed at the centre of the ArDM detector, in the Canfranc Underground Laboratory (LSC) in Spain. The ArDM LAr volume acts as an active veto for background radioactivity, mostly γγ-rays from the ArDM detector materials and the surrounding rock. This article describes the DArT in ArDM project, including the chamber design and construction, and reviews the background required to achieve the expected performance of the detector.

Determination of strong-phase parameters in D→KS,L0π+π−D\rightarrow K^0_{S,L}π^+π^-

We report the most precise measurements to date of the strong-phase parameters between D0D^0 and Dˉ0\bar{D}^0 decays to KS,L0π+π−K^0_{S,L}π^+π^- using a sample of 2.93 fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- annihilation data collected at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. Our results provide the key inputs for a binned model-independent determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle γ/ϕ3γ/ϕ_3 with BB decays. Using our results, the decay model sensitivity to the γ/ϕ3γ/ϕ_3 measurement is expected to be between 0.7∘^{\circ} and 1.2∘^{\circ}, approximately a factor of three smaller than that achievable with previous measurements. The improved precision of this work ensures that measurements of γ/ϕ3γ/ϕ_3 will not be limited by knowledge of strong phases for the next decade. Furthermore, our results provide critical input for other flavor-physics investigations, including charm mixing, other measurements of CPCP violation, and the measurement of strong-phase parameters for other DD-decay modes.

First Measurements of χcJ→Σ−Σˉ+(J=0,1,2)χ_{cJ}\rightarrow Σ^{-} \barΣ^{+} (J = 0, 1, 2) Decays

We measured the branching fractions of the decays χcJ→Σ−Σˉ+χ_{cJ}\toΣ^{-}\barΣ^{+} for the first time using the final states nnˉπ+π−n\bar{n}π^{+}π^{-}. The data sample exploited here is 448.1×106448.1\times10^{6} ψ(3686)ψ(3686) events collected with BESIII. We find B(χcJ→Σ−Σˉ+)=(51.3±2.4±4.1)×10−5, (5.7±1.4±0.6)×10−5, and (4.4±1.7±0.5)×10−5\mathcal{B}(χ_{cJ}\rightarrowΣ^{-}\barΣ^{+}) = (51.3\pm2.4\pm4.1)\times10^{-5},\, (5.7\pm1.4\pm0.6)\times10^{-5},\, \rm{and}~ (4.4\pm1.7\pm0.5)\times10^{-5}, for J=0,1,2J=0,1,2, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic.

Future Physics Programme of BESIII

There has recently been a dramatic renewal of interest in the subjects of hadron spectroscopy and charm physics. This renaissance has been driven in part by the discovery of a plethora of charmonium-like XYZXYZ states at BESIII and BB factories, and the observation of an intriguing proton-antiproton threshold enhancement and the possibly related X(1835)X(1835) meson state at BESIII, as well as the threshold measurements of charm mesons and charm baryons. We present a detailed survey of the important topics in tau-charm physics and hadron physics that can be further explored at BESIII over the remaining lifetime of BEPCII operation. This survey will help in the optimization of the data-taking plan over the coming years, and provides physics motivation for the possible upgrade of BEPCII to higher luminosity.

The SU(3)-flavor violating decay J/ψ→Ξ(1530)−Ξˉ++c.c.J/ψ\toΞ(1530)^{-}\barΞ^{+}+c.c. is studied using (1310.6±7.0)×106 J/ψ(1310.6\pm7.0)\times 10^{6} ~J/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII and the branching fraction is measured to be B(J/ψ→Ξ(1530)−Ξˉ++c.c.)=(3.17±0.02stat.±0.08syst.)×10−4{\cal{B}}(J/ψ\toΞ(1530)^{-}\barΞ^{+}+c.c.)=(3.17\pm0.02_{\rm stat.}\pm0.08_{\rm syst.})\times10^{-4}. This is consistent with previous measurements with an improved precision. The angular parameter for this decay is measured for the first time and is found to be α=−0.21±0.04stat.±0.06syst.α=-0.21\pm0.04_{\rm stat.}\pm0.06_{\rm syst.}. In addition, we report evidence for the radiative decay Ξ(1530)−→γΞ−Ξ(1530)^{-}\toγΞ^- with a significance of 3.9σσ, including the systematic uncertainties. The 90\% confidence level upper limit on the branching fraction is determined to be B(Ξ(1530)−→γΞ−)≤3.7\mathcal{B}(Ξ(1530)^{-}\toγΞ^- )\leq3.7\%.

Measurement of proton electromagnetic form factors in e+e−→ppˉe^+e^- \to p\bar{p} in the energy region 2.00-3.08 GeV

The process of e+e−→ppˉe^+e^- \rightarrow p\bar{p} is studied at 22 center-of-mass energy points (s\sqrt{s}) from 2.00 to 3.08 GeV, exploiting 688.5~pb−1^{-1} of data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. The Born cross section~(σppˉσ_{p\bar{p}}) of e+e−→ppˉe^+e^- \rightarrow p\bar{p} is measured with the energy-scan technique and it is found to be consistent with previously published data, but with much improved accuracy. In addition, the electromagnetic form-factor ratio (∣GE/GM∣|G_{E}/G_{M}|) and the value of the effective (∣Geff∣|G_{\rm{eff}}|), electric (∣GE∣|G_E|) and magnetic (∣GM∣|G_M|) form factors are measured by studying the helicity angle of the proton at 16 center-of-mass energy points. ∣GE/GM∣|G_{E}/G_{M}| and ∣GM∣|G_M| are determined with high accuracy, providing uncertainties comparable to data in the space-like region, and ∣GE∣|G_E| is measured for the first time. We reach unprecedented accuracy, and precision results in the time-like region provide information to improve our understanding of the proton inner structure and to test theoretical models which depend on non-perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics.

Measurement of the cross section for e+e−→Ξ−Ξˉ+e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowΞ^{-}\barΞ^{+} and observation of an excited ΞΞ baryon

Using a total of 11.0 fb−1^{-1} of e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collision data with center-of-mass energies between 4.009 GeV and 4.6 GeV and collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, we measure fifteen exclusive cross sections and effective form factors for the process e+e−→Ξ−Ξˉ+e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowΞ^{-}\barΞ^{+} by means of a single baryon-tag method. After performing a fit to the dressed cross section of e+e−→Ξ−Ξˉ+e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowΞ^{-}\barΞ^{+}, no significant ψ(4230)ψ(4230) or ψ(4260)ψ(4260) resonance is observed in the Ξ−Ξˉ+Ξ^{-}\barΞ^{+} final states, and upper limits at the 90\% confidence level on ΓeeBΓ_{ee}\mathcal{B} for the processes ψ(4230)ψ(4230)/ψ(4260)→Ξ−Ξˉ+ψ(4260)\rightarrowΞ^{-}\barΞ^{+} are determined. In addition, an excited ΞΞ baryon at 1820 MeV/c2c^{2} is observed with a statistical significance of 6.2 ∼\sim 6.5σσ by including the systematic uncertainty, and the mass and width are measured to be M=(1825.5±4.7±4.7)M = (1825.5 \pm 4.7 \pm 4.7)~MeV/c2c^{2} and Γ=(17.0±15.0±7.9)Γ= (17.0 \pm 15.0 \pm 7.9)~MeV, which confirms the existence of the JP=32−J^{P}=\frac{3}{2}^{-} state Ξ(1820)Ξ(1820).

Model-independent determination of the relative strong-phase difference between D0D^0 and Dˉ0→KS,L0π+π−\bar{D}^0\rightarrow K^0_{S,L}π^+π^- and its impact on the measurement of the CKM angle γ/ϕ3γ/ϕ_3

Crucial inputs for a variety of CPCP-violation studies can be determined through the analysis of pairs of quantum-entangled neutral DD mesons, which are produced in the decay of the ψ(3770)ψ(3770) resonance. The relative strong-phase parameters between D0D^0 and Dˉ0\bar{D}^0 in the decays D0→KS,L0π+π−D^0\rightarrow K^0_{S,L}π^+π^- are studied using 2.93~fb−1{\rm fb}^{-1} of e+e−e^+e^- annihilation data delivered by the BEPCII collider and collected by the BESIII detector at a center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV. Results are presented in regions of the phase space of the decay. These are the most precise measurements to date of the strong-phase parameters in D→KS,L0π+π−D \to K_{S,L}^0π^+π^- decays. Using these parameters, the associated uncertainty on the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle γ/ϕ3γ/ϕ_3 is expected to be between 0.7∘0.7^\circ and 1.2∘1.2^\circ, for an analysis using the decay B±→DK±B^{\pm}\rightarrow DK^{\pm}, D→KS0π+π−D\rightarrow K^0_Sπ^+π^-, where DD represents a superposition of D0D^0 and D0ˉ\bar{D^0} states. This is a factor of three smaller than that achievable with previous measurements. Furthermore, these results provide valuable input for charm-mixing studies, other measurements of CPCP violation, and the measurement of strong-phase parameters for other DD-decay modes.

Observation of a resonant structure in e+e−→K+K−π0π0e^{+}e^{-} \to K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}π^{0}

Using e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collision data samples with center-of-mass energies ranging from 2.000 to 2.644 GeV, collected by the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, and with a total integrated luminosity of 300 pb^{-1}, a partial-wave analysis is performed for the process e+e−→K+K−π0π0e^{+}e^{-} \to K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}π^{0}. The total Born cross sections for the process e+e−→K+K−π0π0e^{+}e^{-} \to K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}π^{0}, as well as the Born cross sections f or the subprocesses e+e−→ϕπ0π0e^{+}e^{-} \to ϕπ^{0}π^{0}, K+(1460)K−K^{+}(1460)K^{-}, K1+(1400)K−K^{+}_{1}(1400)K^{-}, K1+(1270)K−K^{+}_{1}(1270)K^{-} and K∗+(892)K∗−(892)K^{*+}(892)K^{*-}(892), are measured versus the center-of-mass energy. The corresponding results for e+e−→K+K−π0π0e^{+}e^{-} \to K^{+}K^{-}π^{0}π^{0} and ϕπ0π0ϕπ^{0}π^{0} are consistent with those of BaBar and have much improved precision.By analyzing the cross sections for the four subprocesses, K+(1460)K−K^{+}(1460)K^{-}, K1+(1400)K−K^{+}_{1}(1400)K^{-}, K1+(1270)K−K^{+ }_{1}(1270)K^{-} and K∗+K∗−K^{*+}K^{*-}, a structure with mass MM = (2126.5 ±\pm 16.8 ±\pm 12.4)~MeV/c^{2} and width ΓΓ = (106.9 ±\pm 32.1 ±\pm 28.1)~MeV is observed with an overall statistical significance of 6.3 σσ, although with very limited significance in the subprocesses e+e−→K1+(1270)K−e^{+}e^{-} \to K^{+}_{1}(1270)K^{-} and K∗+(892)K∗−(892)K^{*+}(892)K^{*-}(892). The resonant parameters of the observed structure suggest it can be identified with the ϕ(2170)ϕ(2170), thus the results provide valuable input to the internal nature of the ϕ(2170)ϕ(2170).

Partial wave analysis of ψ(3686)→K+K−ηψ(3686)\rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}η

Using a sample of (448.1±2.9)×106(448.1\pm2.9)\times10^6 ψ(3686)ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector, we perform the first partial wave analysis of ψ(3686)→K+K−ηψ(3686)\rightarrow K^+K^-η. In addition to the well established states, ϕ(1020)ϕ(1020), ϕ(1680)ϕ(1680), and K3∗(1780)K_3^*(1780), contributions from X(1750)X(1750), ρ(2150)ρ(2150), ρ3(2250)ρ_3(2250), and K2∗(1980)K^*_2(1980) are also observed. The X(1750)X(1750) state is determined to be a 1−−1^{--} resonance. The simultaneous observation of the ϕ(1680)ϕ(1680) and X(1750)X(1750) indicates that the X(1750)X(1750), with previous observations in photoproduction, is distinct from the ϕ(1680)ϕ(1680). The masses, widths, branching fractions of ψ(3686)→K+K−ηψ(3686)\rightarrow K^+K^-η and the intermediate resonances are also measured.

Precise Measurements of Branching Fractions for Ds+D_s^+ Meson Decays to Two Pseudoscalar Mesons

We report a study of the e+e−→D+D−π+π−e^{+}e^{-} \to D^{+} D^{-} π^{+} π^{-} process using e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collision data samples with an integrated luminosity of 2.5 fb−12.5\,\rm{fb}^{-1} at center-of-mass energies from 4.36 to 4.60GeV4.60 \rm{GeV}, collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII storage ring. The D1(2420)+D_{1}(2420)^+ is observed in the D+π+π−D^{+} π^{+} π^{-} mass spectrum. The mass and width of the D1(2420)+D_{1}(2420)^+ are measured to be (2427.2±1.0stat.±1.2syst.)MeV/c2(2427.2\pm 1.0_{\rm stat.}\pm 1.2_{\rm syst.}) \rm{MeV}/c^2 and (23.2±2.3stat.±2.3syst.)MeV(23.2\pm 2.3_{\rm stat.} \pm2.3_{\rm syst.}) \rm{MeV}, respectively. The first errors are statistical and the second ones are systematic. In addition, the Born cross sections of the e+e−→D1(2420)+D−+c.c.→D+D−π+π−e^{+}e^{-} \to D_{1}(2420)^+D^- + c.c. \to D^{+} D^{-} π^{+} π^{-} and e+e−→ψ(3770)π+π−→D+D−π+π−e^{+}e^{-} \to ψ(3770) π^{+} π^{-} \to D^{+} D^{-} π^{+} π^{-} processes are measured as a function of the center-of-mass energy.

Time performance of a triple-GEM detector at high rate

Gaseous detectors are used in high energy physics as trackers or, more generally, as devices for the measurement of the particle position. For this reason, they must provide high spatial resolution and they have to be able to operate in regions of intense radiation, i.e. around the interaction point of collider machines. Among these, Micro Pattern Gaseous Detectors (MPGD) are the latest frontier and allow to overcome many limitations of the pre-existing detectors, such as the radiation tolerance and the rate capability. The gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) is a MPGD that exploits an intense electric field in a reduced amplification region in order to prevent discharges. Several amplification stages, like in a triple-GEM, allow to increase the detector gain and to reduce the discharge probability. Reconstruction techniques such as charge centroid (CC) and micro-Time Projection Chamber ($\upmu$TPC) are used to perform the position measurement. From literature triple-GEMs show a stable behaviour up to 108 10^8\,Hz/cm2^2. A testbeam with four planar triple-GEMs has been performed at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI) facility and their performance was evaluated in different beam conditions. In this article a focus on the time performance for the $\upmu$TPC clusterization is given and a new measurement of the triple-GEM limits at high rate will be presented.

A fast and parametric digitization for triple-GEM detectors

Triple-GEM detectors are a well known technology in high energy physics. In order to have a complete understanding of their behavior, in parallel with on beam testing, a Monte Carlo code has to be developed to simulate their response to the passage of particles. The software must take into account all the physical processes involved from the primary ionization up to the signal formation, e.g. the avalanche multiplication and the effect of the diffusion on the electrons. In the case of gas detectors, existing software such as Garfield already perform a very detailed simulation but are CPU time consuming. A description of a reliable but faster simulation is presented here: it uses a parametric description of the variables of interest obtained by suitable preliminary Garfield simulations and tuned to the test beam data. It can reproduce the real values of the charge measured by the strip, needed to reconstruct the position with the Charge Centroid method. In addition, particular attention was put to the simulation of the timing information, which permits to apply also the micro-Time Projection Chamber position reconstruction, for the first time on a triple-GEM. A comparison between simulation and experimental values of some sentinel variables in different conditions of magnetic field, high voltage settings and incident angle will be shown.

An ultra-wide bandwidth (704 to 4032 MHz) receiver for the Parkes radio telescope

We describe an ultra-wide-bandwidth, low-frequency receiver ("UWL") recently installed on the Parkes radio telescope. The receiver system provides continuous frequency coverage from 704 to 4032 MHz. For much of the band (~60%) the system temperature is approximately 22K and the receiver system remains in a linear regime even in the presence of strong mobile phone transmissions. We discuss the scientific and technical aspects of the new receiver including its astronomical objectives, as well as the feed, receiver, digitiser and signal-processor design. We describe the pipeline routines that form the archive-ready data products and how those data files can be accessed from the archives. The system performance is quantified including the system noise and linearity, beam shape, antenna efficiency, polarisation calibration and timing stability.

GRAAL: Gem Reconstruction And Analysis Library

MPGD are the new frontier in gas trackers. Among this kind of devices, theGEM chambers are widely used. The experimental signals acquired with the detector mustobviously be reconstructed and analysed. In this contribution, a new offline software to performreconstruction, alignment and analysis on the data collected with APV-25 and TIGER ASICswill be presented. GRAAL (Gem Reconstruction And Analysis Library) is able to measurethe performance of a MPGD detector with a strip segmented anode (presently). The code isdivided in three parts: reconstruction, where the hits are digitized and clusterized; tracking, where a procedure fits the points from the tracking system and uses that information to align thechamber with rotations and shifts; analysis, where the performance is evaluated (e.g. efficiency, spatial resolution,etc.). The user must set the geometry of the setup and then the programreturns automatically the analysis results, taking care of different conditions of gas mixture, electric field, magnetic field, geometries, strip orientation, dead strip, misalignment and manyothers.

Observation of the decays χcJ→ϕϕηχ_{cJ} \to ϕϕη

Using a data sample of (448.1±2.9)×106(448.1\pm2.9)\times10^{6} ψ(3686)ψ(3686) decays collected by the BESIII detector at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPCII), we observe the decays χcJ→ϕϕη (J=0, 1, 2)χ_{cJ}\to ϕϕη~(J=0,~1,~2), where the χcJχ_{cJ} are produced via the radiative processes ψ(3686)→γχcJψ(3686)\toγχ_{cJ}. The branching fractions are measured to be B(χc0→ϕϕη)=(8.41±0.74±0.62)×10−4\mathcal B(χ_{c0}\toϕϕη)=(8.41\pm0.74\pm0.62)\times10^{-4}, B(χc1→ϕϕη)=(2.96±0.43±0.22)×10−4\mathcal B(χ_{c1}\toϕϕη)=(2.96\pm0.43\pm0.22)\times 10^{-4}, and B(χc2→ϕϕη)=(5.33±0.52±0.39)×10−4\mathcal B(χ_{c2} \to ϕϕη)=(5.33\pm0.52\pm0.39) \times 10^{-4}, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. We also search for intermediate states in the ϕϕϕϕ or ηϕηϕ combinations, but no significant structure is seen due to the limited statistics.

Search for the rare decay η′→π0π0π0π0η'\rightarrowπ^{0}π^{0}π^{0}π^{0} at BESIII

Based on a sample of 1.31 billion J/ψJ/ψ events collected with the BESIII detector, we perform a search for the rare decay η′→4π0η'\rightarrow 4π^{0} via J/ψ→γη′J/ψ\rightarrowγη'. No significant η′η' signal is observed in the invariant mass spectrum of 4π0π^{0}. With a Bayesian approach, the upper limit on the branching fraction of η′→4π0η'\rightarrow 4π^{0} is determined to be B(η′→4π0)\mathcal{B}(η'\rightarrow 4π^{0}) <4.94×10−5< 4.94\times10^{-5} at the 90\% confidence level, which is a factor of six smaller than the previous experimental limit.

The Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder: Performance of the Boolardy Engineering Test Array

We describe the performance of the Boolardy Engineering Test Array (BETA), the prototype for the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder telescope ASKAP. BETA is the first aperture synthesis radio telescope to use phased array feed technology, giving it the ability to electronically form up to nine dual-polarization beams. We report the methods developed for forming and measuring the beams, and the adaptations that have been made to the traditional calibration and imaging procedures in order to allow BETA to function as a multi-beam aperture synthesis telescope. We describe the commissioning of the instrument and present details of BETA's performance: sensitivity, beam characteristics, polarimetric properties and image quality. We summarise the astronomical science that it has produced and draw lessons from operating BETA that will be relevant to the commissioning and operation of the final ASKAP telescope.

ASKAP HI imaging of the galaxy group IC 1459

We present HI imaging of the galaxy group IC 1459 carried out with six antennas of the Australian SKA Pathfinder equipped with phased-array feeds. We detect and resolve HI in eleven galaxies down to a column density of ∼1020\sim10^{20} cm−2^{-2} inside a ~6 deg2^2 field and with a resolution of ~1 arcmin on the sky and ~8 km/s in velocity. We present HI images, velocity fields and integrated spectra of all detections, and highlight the discovery of three HI clouds -- two in the proximity of the galaxy IC 5270 and one close to NGC 7418. Each cloud has an HI mass of 10910^9 M⊙_\odot and accounts for ~15% of the HI associated with its host galaxy. Available images at ultraviolet, optical and infrared wavelengths do not reveal any clear stellar counterpart of any of the clouds, suggesting that they are not gas-rich dwarf neighbours of IC 5270 and NGC 7418. Using Parkes data we find evidence of additional extended, low-column-density HI emission around IC 5270, indicating that the clouds are the tip of the iceberg of a larger system of gas surrounding this galaxy. This result adds to the body of evidence on the presence of intra-group gas within the IC 1459 group. Altogether, the HI found outside galaxies in this group amounts to several times 10910^9 M⊙_\odot, at least 10% of the HI contained inside galaxies. This suggests a substantial flow of gas in and out of galaxies during the several billion years of the group's evolution.

Discovery of HI gas in a young radio galaxy at z=0.44z = 0.44 using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder

We report the discovery of a new 21-cm HI absorption system using commissioning data from the Boolardy Engineering Test Array of the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). Using the 711.5 - 1015.5 MHz band of ASKAP we were able to conduct a blind search for the 21-cm line in a continuous redshift range between z=0.4z = 0.4 and 1.0, which has, until now, remained largely unexplored. The absorption line is detected at z=0.44z = 0.44 towards the GHz-peaked spectrum radio source PKS B1740−-517 and demonstrates ASKAP's excellent capability for performing a future wide-field survey for HI absorption at these redshifts. Optical spectroscopy and imaging using the Gemini-South telescope indicates that the HI gas is intrinsic to the host galaxy of the radio source. The narrow OIII emission lines show clear double-peaked structure, indicating either large-scale outflow or rotation of the ionized gas. Archival data from the \emph{XMM-Newton} satellite exhibit an absorbed X-ray spectrum that is consistent with a high column density obscuring medium around the active galactic nucleus. The HI absorption profile is complex, with four distinct components ranging in width from 5 to 300 km s−1^{-1} and fractional depths from 0.2 to 20 per cent. In addition to systemic HI gas, in a circumnuclear disc or ring structure aligned with the radio jet, we find evidence for a possible broad outflow of neutral gas moving at a radial velocity of v∼300v \sim 300 km s−1^{-1}. We infer that the expanding young radio source (tage≈2500t_{\rm age} \approx 2500 yr) is cocooned within a dense medium and may be driving circumnuclear neutral gas in an outflow of ∼\sim 1 M⊙\mathrm{M}_{\odot} yr−1^{-1}.

The Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder: System Architecture and Specifications of the Boolardy Engineering Test Array

This paper describes the system architecture of a newly constructed radio telescope - the Boolardy Engineering Test Array, which is a prototype of the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder telescope. Phased array feed technology is used to form multiple simultaneous beams per antenna, providing astronomers with unprecedented survey speed. The test array described here is a 6-antenna interferometer, fitted with prototype signal processing hardware capable of forming at least 9 dual-polarisation beams simultaneously, allowing several square degrees to be imaged in a single pointed observation. The main purpose of the test array is to develop beamforming and wide-field calibration methods for use with the full telescope, but it will also be capable of limited early science demonstrations.
