Zero-frequency transport properties of one dimensional spin-1/2 systems

We report a detailed analysis of the Drude weights for both thermal and spin transport in one dimensional spin-1/2 systems by means of exact diagonalization and analytic approaches at finite temperatures. Transport properties are studied first for the integrable XXZ model and second for various non-integrable systems such as the dimerized chain, the frustrated chain, and the spin ladder. We compare our results obtained by exact diagonalization and mean-field theory with the Bethe ansatz, bosonization and other numerical studies in the case of the anisotropic Heisenberg model both in the gapless and gapped regime. In particular, we find indications that the Drude weight for spin transport is finite in the thermodynamic limit for the isotropic chain. For the non-integrable models, a finite-size analysis of the numerical data for the Drude weights is presented covering the entire parameter space of the dimerized and frustrated chain. We also discuss which conclusions can be drawn from bosonization regarding the question whether the Drude weights are finite or not. One of our main results is that the Drude weights vanish in the thermodynamic limit for non-integrable models.

Quantum phases of a frustrated four-leg spin tube

We study the ground state phase diagram of a frustrated spin-1/2 four-leg tube. Using a variety of complementary techniques, namely density matrix renormalization group, exact diagonalization, Schwinger boson mean field theory, quantum Monte-Carlo and series expansion, we explore the parameter space of this model in the regime of all-antiferromagnetic exchange. In contrast to unfrustrated four-leg tubes we uncover a rich phase diagram. Apart from the Luttinger liquid fixed point in the limit of decoupled legs, this comprises several gapped ground states, namely a plaquette, an incommensurate, and an antiferromagnetic quasi spin-2 chain phase. The transitions between these phases are analyzed in terms of total energy and static structure factor calculations and are found to be of (weak) first order. Despite the absence of long range order in the quantum case, remarkable similarities to the classical phase diagram are uncovered, with the exception of the icommensurate regime, which is strongly renormalized by quantum fluctuations. In the limit of large leg exchange the tube exhibits a deconfinement cross-over from gapped magnon like excitations to spinons.

Coherent spin-current oscillations in transverse magnetic fields

We address the coherence of the dynamics of spin-currents with components transverse to an external magnetic field for the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain. We study current autocorrelations at finite temperatures and the real-time dynamics of currents at zero temperature. Besides a coherent Larmor oscillation, we find an additional collective oscillation at higher frequencies, emerging as a coherent many-magnon effect at low temperatures. Using numerical and analytical methods, we analyze the oscillation frequency and decay time of this coherent current-mode versus temperature and magnetic field.

Field-dependent spin and heat conductivities of dimerized spin-1/2 chains

We study the spin and heat conductivity of dimerized spin-1/2 chains in homogeneous magnetic fields at finite temperatures. At zero temperature, the model undergoes two field-induced quantum phase transitions from a dimerized, into a Luttinger, and finally into a fully polarized phase. We search for signatures of these transitions in the spin and heat conductivities. Using exact diagonalization, we calculate the Drude weights, the frequency dependence of the conductivities, and the corresponding integrated spectral weights. As a main result, we demonstrate that both the spin and heat conductivity are enhanced in the gapless phase and most notably at low frequencies. In the case of the thermal conductivity, however, the field-induced increase seen in the bare transport coefficients is suppressed by magnetothermal effects, caused by the coupling of the heat and spin current in finite magnetic fields. Our results complement recent magnetic transport experiments on spin ladder materials with sufficiently small exchange couplings allowing access to the field-induced transitions.

Low frequency spin dynamics in the quantum magnet copper pyrazine dinitrate

The S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain exhibits a magnetic field driven quantum critical point. We study the low frequency spin dynamics in copper pyrazine dinitrate (CuPzN), a realization of this model system of quantum magnetism, by means of 13^{13}C-NMR spectroscopy. Measurements of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate T1−1T_1^{-1} in the vicinity of the saturation field are compared with quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the dynamic structure factor. Both show a strong divergence of low energy excitations at temperatures in the quantum regime. The analysis of the anisotropic T1−1T_1^{-1}-rates and frequency shifts allows one to disentangle the contributions from transverse and longitudinal spin fluctuations for a selective study and to determine the transfer of delocalized spin moments from copper to the neighboring nitrogen atoms.

Magnetic heat conductivity in CaCu2O3\rm\bf CaCu_2O_3: linear temperature dependence

We present experimental results for the thermal conductivity κκ of the pseudo 2-leg ladder material CaCu2O3\rm CaCu_2O_3. The strong buckling of the ladder rungs renders this material a good approximation to a S=1/2S=1/2 Heisenberg-chain. Despite a strong suppression of the thermal conductivity of this material in all crystal directions due to inherent disorder, we find a dominant magnetic contribution κmagκ_\mathrm{mag} along the chain direction. κmagκ_\mathrm{mag} is \textit{linear} in temperature, resembling the low-temperature limit of the thermal Drude weight DthD_\mathrm{th} of the S=1/2S=1/2 Heisenberg chain. The comparison of κmagκ_\mathrm{mag} and DthD_\mathrm{th} yields a magnetic mean free path of lmag≈22±5l_\mathrm{mag}\approx 22 \pm 5 Å, in good agreement with magnetic measurements.

Giant spin canting in the S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic chain [CuPM(NO3)2(H2O)2]n observed by 13C-NMR

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study on copper pyrimidine dinitrate [CuPM(NO3)2(H2O)2]n, a one-dimensional S = 1/2 antiferromagnet with alternating local symmetry. From the local susceptibility measured by NMR at the three inequivalent carbon sites in the pyrimidine molecule we deduce a giant spin canting, i.e., an additional staggered magnetization perpendicular to the applied external field at low temperatures. The magnitude of the transverse magnetization, the spin canting of 52 degrees at 10 K and 9.3 T and its temperature dependence are in excellent agreement with exact diagonalization calculations.

High-field magnetization study of the S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain [PM Cu(NO3_3)2_2(H2_2O)2_2]n_n with a field-induced gap

We present a high-field magnetization study of the SS = 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain [PM Cu(NO3_3)2_2(H2_2O)2_2]n_n. For this material, as result of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and a staggered gg tensor, the ground state is characterized by an anisotropic field-induced spin excitation gap and a staggered magnetization. Our data reveal the qualitatively different behavior in the directions of maximum and zero spin excitation gap. The data are analyzed via exact diagonalization of a linear spin chain with up to 20 sites and on basis of the Bethe ansatz equations, respectively. For both directions we find very good agreement between experimental data and theoretical calculations. We extract the magnetic coupling strength J/kBJ/k_B along the chain direction to 36.3(5) K and determine the field dependence of the staggered magnetization component msm_s.

Magnon Heat Transport in doped La2CuO4\rm La_2CuO_4

We present results of the thermal conductivity of La2CuO4\rm La_2CuO_4 and La1.8Eu0.2CuO4\rm La_{1.8}Eu_{0.2}CuO_4 single-crystals which represent model systems for the two-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a square lattice. We find large anisotropies of the thermal conductivity, which are explained in terms of two-dimensional heat conduction by magnons within the CuO2_2 planes. Non-magnetic Zn substituted for Cu gradually suppresses this magnon thermal conductivity κmagκ_{\mathrm{mag}}. A semiclassical analysis of κmagκ_{\mathrm{mag}} is shown to yield a magnon mean free path which scales linearly with the reciprocal concentration of Zn-ions.
