Magnetic irreversibility in ultrafine ZnFe2O4 partices

Pure ultrafine ZnFe2O4 particles have been obtained from mechanosynthesis of the ZnO and Fe2O3 oxides. The average grain diameter was estimated from x-ray diffraction to be <d> = 36(6) nm. Refinement of neutron diffraction (ND) data showed that the resulting cubic spinel structure is oxygen-deficient, with ~7% of Fe3+ ions occupying the tetrahedral A sites. Magnetization curves taken at 4.2 K showed absence of saturation up to fields H = 9 Tesla, associated to a spin-canted produced by the milling process. Field-cooled (FC) and zero-field-cooled (ZFC) curves showed irreversible behavior extending well above room temperature, which is associated to spin disorder. Annealing samples at 300 °C yields an average grain size <d> = 50(6) nm, and ~16% of Fe3+ ions at A sites. Partial oxygen recovery is also deduced from neutron data refinement in annealed samples. Concurrently, decrease of magnetic irreversibility is noticed, assigned to partial recovery of the collinear spin structure. Complex Mössbauer spectra were observed at room temperature and 80 K, with broad hyperfine field distributions spanning from ~10 T to ~40 T. At T = 4.2 K, hyperfine field distributions indicate high disorder in Fe local environments. The above data suggest the existence of Fe-rich clusters, yielding strong superexchange interactions between Fe ions at A and B sites of the spinel structure.

Observation of spin glass state in weakly ferromagnetic Sr$_2$FeCoO$_6$ double perovskite

We report the observation of spin glass state in the double perovskite oxide Sr$_{2}$FeCoO$_{6}$ prepared through sol-gel technique. Initial structural studies using x rays reveal that the compound crystallizes in tetragonal $I 4/m$ structure with lattice parameters, $a$ = 5.4609(2) Åand $c$ = 7.7113(7) Å. The temperature dependent powder x ray studies reveal no structural phase transition in the temperature range 10 -- 300 K. However, the unit cell volume shows an anomaly coinciding with the magnetic transition temperature thereby suggesting a close connection between lattice and magnetism. Neutron diffraction studies and subsequent bond valence sums analysis show that in Sr$_{2}$FeCoO$_{6}$, the $B$ site is randomly occupied by Fe and Co in the mixed valence states of Fe$^{3+}$/Fe$^{4+}$ and Co$^{3+}$/Co$^{4+}$. The random occupancy and mixed valence sets the stage for inhomogeneous magnetic exchange interactions and in turn, for the spin glass like state in this double perovskite which is observed as an irreversibility in temperature dependent dc magnetization at $T_f\sim$ 75 K. Thermal hysteresis observed in the magnetization profile of Sr$_{2}$FeCoO$_{6}$ is indicative of the mixed magnetic phases present. The dynamic magnetic susceptibility displays characteristic frequency dependence and confirms the spin glass nature of this material. Dynamical scaling analysis of $χ'(T)$ yields a critical temperature $T_{ct}$ = 75.14(8) K and an exponent $zν$ = 6.2(2) typical for spin glasses. The signature of presence of mixed magnetic interactions is obtained from the thermal hysteresis in magnetization of Sr$_{2}$FeCoO$_{6}$. Combining the neutron and magnetization results of Sr$_2$FeCoO$_6$, we deduce the spin states of Fe to be in low spin while that of Co to be in low spin and intermediate spin.

Neutron structural studies on the superconducting (Nd1-xCax)(Ba1.6La0.4)Cu3Oz system

We have investigated the influence of Ca ions substitution on the structural and superconducting properties of (Nd1-xCax)(Ba1.6La0.4)Cu3Oz system. Magnetization, X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction studies have been carried out on a series of compounds with x = 0.0 to 0.6. The superconducting transition temperature Tc, determined from magnetization measurements increases with increasing Ca2+ substitution. Neutron diffraction studies reveal that these compounds crystallize in a tetragonal structure (space group P4/mmm). A detailed analysis of the neutron diffraction data reveals that Ca and La ions are intermixed at the nominal Ba and Nd sites. While a major fraction of Ca ions occupy the usual Nd site, a small fraction occupies the Ba site. Consequently, the corresponding amount of La substitutes at the nominal Nd site. The intermixing of Ca and La sites randomizes the chain site oxygens leading to a tetragonal structure despite an oxygen content close to 7.0 for all the Ca doped samples. Further increase of Ca content lead to change in its co-ordination from six-fold to eight-fold at x >= 0.4.

Structural and magnetic properties of MSr2Y1.5Ce0.5Cu2Oz (M-1222) compounds with M = Fe and Co

MSr2Y1.5Ce0.5Cu2Oz (M-1222) compounds, with M = Fe and Co, have been synthesized through a solid-state reaction route. Both compounds crystallize in a tetragonal structure (space group I4/mmm). A Rietveld structural refinement of room-temperature neutron diffraction data for Fe-1222 reveals that nearly half the Fe remains at the M site, while the other half goes to the Cu site in the CuO2 planes. Existence of Fe at two different lattice sites, is also confirmed by 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy from which it is inferred that nearly 50% of the total Fe occupies the Cu site in the CuO2 planes as Fe3+, whereas the other 50 % is located at the M site with nearly 40 % as Fe4+ and around 10% as Fe3+. For the M = Co compound, nearly 84 % of Co remains at its designated M site, while the rest occupies the Cu site in the CuO2 planes. The oxygen content, z, based on oxygen occupancies refined from the neutron diffraction data, comes close to 9.0 for both the samples The ZFC and FC magnetization curves as a function of temperature show a complex behavior for both Fe-1222 and Co-1222 compounds.

Superconductivity of up to 80 K for Tb-123 - TbSr2Cu2.7Mo0.3O7

The Tb-123 phase has been synthesized in single-phase form with the composition TbSr2Cu2.7Mo0.3O7 by solid-state reaction route and its phase purity is confirmed by neutron powder diffraction experiments. As-synthesized sample does not show superconductivity down to 5 K. An unusually high antiferromagnetic ordering temperature (TN) of around 7 K is seen for Tb. After 120-atm-O2 post-annealing, bulk superconductivity is achieved in the compound at around 30 K, without any significant effect on TN. To achieve higher oxygen content and higher Tc, the as-synthesized sample is subjected to high-pressure oxygenation (HPO) carried out in a closed cell at 5 GPa and 400 oC in the presence of AgO as an excess-oxygen source. This sample exhibited superconductivity onset at around 80 K with a Meissner fraction of larger than 10 % at 5 K. Our observation of superconductivity at 80 K is the highest Tc to-date among the Tb-123 compounds.
