New Insights on One-Sided Lipschitz and Quadratically Inner-Bounded Nonlinear Dynamic Systems

Nonlinear dynamic systems can be classified into various classes depending on the modeled nonlinearity. These classes include Lipschitz, bounded Jacobian, one-sided Lipschitz (OSL), and quadratically inner-bounded (QIB). Such classes essentially yield bounding constants characterizing the nonlinearity. This is then used to design observers and controllers through Riccati equations or matrix inequalities. While analytical expressions for bounding constants of Lipschitz and bounded Jacobian nonlinearity are studied in the literature, OSL and QIB classes are not thoroughly analyzed---computationally or analytically. In short, this paper develops analytical expressions of OSL and QIB bounding constants. These expressions are posed as constrained maximization problems, which can be solved via various optimization algorithms. This paper also presents a novel insight particularly on QIB function set: any function that is QIB turns out to be also Lipschitz continuous.

Blowup with vorticity control for a 2D model of the Boussinesq equations

We propose a system of equations with nonlocal flux in two space dimensions which is closely modeled after the 2D Boussinesq equations in a hyperbolic flow scenario. Our equations involve a simplified vorticity stretching term and Biot-Savart law and provide insight into the underlying intrinsic mechanisms of singularity formation. We prove stable, controlled finite time blowup involving upper and lower bounds on the vorticity up to the time of blowup for a wide class of initial data.

No Local Double Exponential Gradient Growth in Hyperbolic Flow for the Euler equation

We consider smooth, double-odd solutions of the two-dimensional Euler equation in $[-1, 1)^2$ with periodic boundary conditions. It is tempting to think that the symmetry in the flow induces possible double-exponential growth in time of the vorticity gradient at the origin, in particular when conditions are such that the flow is "hyperbolic". This is because examples of solutions with $C^{1, γ}$-regularity were already constructed with exponential gradient growth by A. Zlatos. We analyze the flow in a small box around the origin in a strongly hyperbolic regime and prove that the compression of the fluid induced by the hyperbolic flow alone is not sufficient to create double-exponential growth of the gradient.

Absence of bound states for waveguides in 2D periodic structures

We study a Helmholtz-type spectral problem in a two-dimensional medium consisting of a fully periodic background structure and a perturbation in form of a line defect. The defect is aligned along one of the coordinate axes, periodic in that direction (with the same periodicity as the background), and bounded in the other direction. This setting models a so-called "soft-wall" waveguide problem. We show that there are no bound states, i.e., the spectrum of the operator under study contains no point spectrum.

On the spectrum of waveguides in planar photonic bandgap structures

We study a Helmholtz-type spectral problem related to the propagation of electromagnetic waves in photonic crystal waveguides. The waveguide is created by introducing a linear defect into a two-dimensional periodic medium. The defect is infinitely extended and aligned with one of the coordinate axes. The perturbation is expected to introduce guided mode spectrum inside the band gaps of the fully periodic, unperturbed spectral problem. In the first part of the paper, we prove that, somewhat unexpectedly, guided mode spectrum can be created by arbitrarily "small" perturbations. Secondly we show that, after performing a Floquet decomposition in the axial direction of the waveguide, for any fixed value of the quasi-momentum $k_x$ the perturbation generates at most finitely many new eigenvalues inside the gap.
