Valuations on polyhedra and topological arrangements

We revisit a classical theme of (general or translation invariant) valuations on convex polyhedra. Our setting generalizes the classical one, in a ``dual'' direction to previously considered generalizations: while previous research was mostly concerned with variations of ground fields/rings, over which the vertices of polytopes are defined, we consider more general collections of defining hyperplanes. No algebraic structures are imposed on these collections. This setting allows us to uncover a close relationship between scissors congruence problems on the one hand and finite hyperplane arrangements on the other hand: there are many parallel results in these fields, for which the parallelism seems to have gone unnoticed. In particular, certain properties of the Varchenko--Gelfand algebras for arrangements translate to properties of polytope rings or valuations. Studying these properties is possible in a general topological setting, that is, in the context of the so-called topological arrangements, where hyperplanes do not have to be straight and may even have nontrivial topology.

Symmetric Cubic Laminations

To investigate the degree dd connectedness locus, Thur\-ston studied \emph{σdσ_d-invariant laminations}, where σdσ_d is the dd-tupling map on the unit circle, and built a topological model for the space of quadratic polynomials f(z)=z2+cf(z) = z^2 +c. In the spirit of Thurston's work, we consider the space of all \emph{cubic symmetric polynomials} fλ(z)=z3+λ2zf_λ(z)=z^3+λ^2 z in a series of three articles. In the present paper, the first in the series, we construct a lamination CsCLC_sCL together with the induced factor space S/CsCL{\mathbb{S}}/C_sCL of the unit circle S{\mathbb{S}}. As will be verified in the third paper of the series, S/CsCL{\mathbb{S}}/C_sCL is a monotone model of the \emph{cubic symmetric connected locus}, i.e. the space of all cubic symmetric polynomials with connected Julia sets.

Upper bounds for the moduli of polynomial-like maps

We establish a version of the Pommerenke-Levin-Yoccoz inequality for the modulus of a polynomial-like restriction of a global polynomial and give two applications. First it is shown that if the modulus of a polynomial-like restriction of an arbitrary polynomial is bounded from below then this forces bounded combinatorics. The second application concerns parameter slices of cubic polynomials given by a non-repelling value of a fixed point multiplier. Namely, the intersection of the main cubioid and the multiplier slice lies in the closure of the principal hyperbolic domain, with only possible exception of queer components.

Cutpoints of invariant subcontinua of polynomial Julia sets

We prove fixed point results for branched covering maps ff of the plane. For complex polynomials PP with Julia set JPJ_P these imply that periodic cutpoints of some invariant subcontinua of JPJ_P are also cutpoints of JPJ_P. We deduce that, under certain assumptions on invariant subcontinua QQ of JPJ_P, every Riemann ray to QQ landing at a periodic repelling/parabolic point x∈Qx\in Q is isotopic to a Riemann ray to JPJ_P relative to QQ.

Immediate renormalization of complex polynomials

A cubic polynomial PP with a non-repelling fixed point bb is said to be \emph{immediately renormalizable} if there exists a (connected) quadratic-like invariant filled Julia set K∗K^* such that b∈K∗b\in K^*. In that case exactly one critical point of PP does not belong to K∗K^*. We show that if, in addition, the Julia set of PP has no (pre)periodic cutpoints then this critical point is recurrent.

Perfect subspaces of quadratic laminations

The combinatorial Mandelbrot set is a continuum in the plane, whose boundary can be defined, up to a homeomorphism, as the quotient space of the unit circle by an explicit equivalence relation. This equivalence relation was described by Douady and, in different terms, by Thurston. Thurston used quadratic invariant laminations as a major tool. As has been previously shown by the authors, the combinatorial Mandelbrot set can be interpreted as a quotient of the space of all limit quadratic invariant laminations. The topology in the space of laminations is defined by the Hausdorff distance. In this paper, we describe two similar quotients. In the first case, the identifications are the same but the space is smaller than that taken for the Mandelbrot set. The result (the quotient space) is obtained from the Mandelbrot set by "unpinching" the transitions between adjacent hyperbolic components. In the second case, we do not identify non-renormalizable laminations while identifying renormalizable laminations according to which hyperbolic lamination they can be "unrenormalised" to.

Slices of Parameter Space of Cubic Polynomials

In this paper, we study slices of the parameter space of cubic polynomials, up to affine conjugacy, given by a fixed value of the multiplier at a non-repelling fixed point. In particular, we study the location of the main cubioidmain\, cubioid in this parameter space. The main cubioidmain\, cubioid is the set of affine conjugacy classes of complex cubic polynomials that have certain dynamical properties generalizing those of polynomials z2+cz^2+c for cc in the filled main cardioid.

The parameter space of cubic laminations with a fixed critical leaf

Thurston parameterized quadratic invariant laminations with a non-invariant lamination, the quotient of which yields a combinatorial model for the Mandelbrot set. As a step toward generalizing this construction to cubic polynomials, we consider slices of the family of cubic invariant laminations defined by a fixed critical leaf with non-periodic endpoints. We parameterize each slice by a lamination just as in the quadratic case, relying on the techniques of smart criticality previously developed by the authors.

Combinatorial models for spaces of cubic polynomials

A model for the Mandelbrot set is due to Thurston and is stated in the language of geodesic laminations. The conjecture that the Mandelbrot set is actually homeomorphic to this model is equivalent to the celebrated MLC conjecture stating that the Mandelbrot set is locally connected. For parameter spaces of higher degree polynomials, even conjectural models are missing, one possible reason being that the higher degree analog of the MLC conjecture is known to be false. We provide a combinatorial model for an essential part of the parameter space of complex cubic polynomials, namely, for the space of all cubic polynomials with connected Julia sets all of whose cycles are repelling (we call such polynomials \emph{dendritic}). The description of the model turns out to be very similar to that of Thurston.

Quadratic-like dynamics of cubic polynomials

A small perturbation of a quadratic polynomial with a non-repelling fixed point gives a polynomial with an attracting fixed point and a Jordan curve Julia set, on which the perturbed polynomial acts like angle doubling. However, there are cubic polynomials with a non-repelling fixed point, for which no perturbation results into a polynomial with Jordan curve Julia set. Motivated by the study of the closure of the Cubic Principal Hyperbolic Domain, we describe such polynomials in terms of their quadratic-like restrictions.

On the theory of coconvex bodies

If the complement of a closed convex set in a closed convex cone is bounded, then this complement minus the apex of the cone is called a coconvex set. Coconvex sets appear in singularity theory (they are closely related to Newton diagrams) and in commutative algebra. Such invariants of coconvex sets as volumes, mixed volumes, number of integer points, etc., play an important role. This paper aims at extending various results from the theory of convex bodies to the coconvex setting. These include the Aleksandrov-Fenchel inequality and the Ehrhart duality.

Topological polynomials with a simple core

We define the (dynamical) core of a topological polynomial (and the associated lamination). This notion extends that of the core of a unimodal interval map. Two explicit descriptions of the core are given: one related to periodic objects and one related to critical objects. We describe all laminations associated with quadratic and cubic topological polynomials with a simple core (in the quadratic case, these correspond precisely to points on the Main Cardioid of the Mandelbrot set).

Moore's theorem

In this (mostly expository) paper, we review a proof of the following old theorem of R.L. Moore: for a closed equivalence relation on the 2-sphere such that all equivalence classes are connected and non-separating, and not all points are equivalent, the quotient space is homeomorphic to the 2-sphere. The proof uses a general topological theory close to but simpler than an original theory of Moore. The exposition is organized so that to make applications of Moore's theory (not only Moore's theorem) in complex dynamics easier, although no dynamical applications are mentioned here.
