In generalization of knot quandles we introduce similar algebraic structures associated with arbitrary pairs consisting of a path-connected topological space and its path-connected subspace.
We discuss natural operations on loops in a quasi-surface and show that these operations define a structure of a quasi-Lie bialgebra in the module generated by the set of free homotopy classes of non-contractible loops.
In generalization of the classical Atiyah-Bott Poisson brackets on the moduli spaces of surfaces we define quasi-Poisson brackets on the moduli spaces of quasi-surfaces.
We give a categorical setting in which Penrose graphical calculus naturally extends to graphs drawn on the boundary of a handlebody. We use it to introduce invariants of 3-manifolds presented by Heegaard splittings. We recover Kuperberg invariants when the category comes from an involutory Hopf algebra and Turaev-Viro invariants when the category is semi-simple and spherical.
Virtual $3$-manifolds were introduced by S.V. Matveev in 2009 as natural generalizations of the classical $3$-manifolds. In this paper, we introduce a notion of complexity of a virtual $3$-manifold. We investigate the values of the complexity for virtual 3-manifolds presented by special polyhedra with one or two $2$-components. On the basis of these results, we establish the exact values of the complexity for a wide class of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds with totally geodesic boundary.
We define a class of trim metric spaces and show that every finite metric space is the leaf space of a metric forest with trim base.
A special spine of a three-manifold is said to be poor if it does not contain proper simple subpolyhedra. Using the Turaev-Viro invariants, we establish that every compact three-dimensional manifold M with connected nonempty boundary has a finite number of poor special spines. Moreover, all poor special spines of the manifold M have the same number of true vertices. We prove that the complexity of a compact hyperbolic three-dimensional manifold with totally geodesic boundary that has a poor special spine with two 2-components and n true vertices is n. Such manifolds are constructed for infinitely many values of n.
With every matching in a graph we associate a group called the matching group. We study this group using the theory of non-positively curved cubed complexes. Our approach is formulated in terms of so-called gliding systems.
In this paper we give a re-normalization of the Reshetikhin-Turaev quantum invariants of links, by modified quantum dimensions. In the case of simple Lie algebras these modified quantum dimensions are proportional to the usual quantum dimensions. More interestingly we will give two examples where the usual quantum dimensions vanish but the modified quantum dimensions are non-zero and lead to non-trivial link invariants. The first of these examples is a class of invariants arising from Lie superalgebras previously defined by the first two authors. These link invariants are multivariable and generalize the multivariable Alexander polynomial. The second example, is a hierarchy of link invariants arising from nilpotent representations of quantized sl(2) at a root of unity. These invariants contain Kashaev's quantum dilogarithm invariants of knots.
Let C be a spherical fusion category. We prove that the Turaev-Viro-Barrett-Westbury state sum invariant of 3-manifolds derived from C is equal to the Reshetikhin-Turaev surgery invariant of 3-manifolds derived from Z(C), where Z(C) is the Drinfeld-Joyal-Street center of C.
We introduce cyclic bilinear forms on coalgebras and use them to generalize Van den Bergh's Poisson brackets in representation algebras.
Homotopy Quantum Field Theories (HQFTs) generalize more familiar Topological Quantum Field Theories (TQFTs). In generalization of the surgery construction of 3-dimensional TQFTs from modular categories, we use surgery to derive 3-dimensional HQFTs from G-modular categories.
Dimer coverings (or perfect matchings) of a finite graph are classical objects of graph theory appearing in the study of exactly solvable models of statistical mechanics. We introduce more general dimer labelings which form a topological space called the dimer space of the graph. This space turns out to be a cubed complex whose vertices are the dimer coverings. We show that the dimer space is nonpositively curved in the sense of Gromov, so that its universal covering is a CAT(0)-space. We study the fundamental group of the dimer space and, in particular, obtain a presentation of this group by generators and relations. We discuss connections with right-angled Artin groups and braid groups of graphs. Our approach uses so-called gliding systems in groups designed to produce nonpositively curved cubed complexes.
We introduce a notion of a Fox pairing in a group algebra and use Fox pairings to define automorphisms of the Malcev completions of groups. These automorphisms generalize to the algebraic setting the action of the Dehn twists in the group algebras of the fundamental groups of surfaces. This work is inspired by the Kawazumi-Kuno generalization of the Dehn twists to non-simple closed curves on surfaces.
Combinatorial aspects of the Torelli-Johnson-Morita theory of surface automorphisms are extended to certain subgroups of the mapping class groups. These subgroups are defined relative to a specified homomorphism from the fundamental group of the surface onto an arbitrary group $K$. For $K$ abelian, there is a combinatorial theory akin to the classical case, for example, providing an explicit cocycle representing the first Johnson homomophism with target $Λ^3 K$. Furthermore, the Earle class with coefficients in $K$ is represented by an explicit cocyle.
Given a discrete group G and a spherical G-fusion category whose neutral component has invertible dimension, we use the state-sum method to construct a 3-dimensional Homotopy Quantum Field Theory (HQFT) with target the Eilenberg-MacLane space K(G,1).
We study the G-centers of G-graded monoidal categories where G is an arbitrary group. We prove that for any spherical G-fusion category C over an algebraically closed field such that the dimension of the neutral component of C is non-zero, the G-center of C is a G-modular category. This generalizes a theorem of M. Müger corresponding to G=1. We also exhibit interesting objects of the G-center.
Given an oriented surface S with base point * on the boundary, we introduce for all N>0, a canonical quasi-Poisson bracket on the space of N-dimensional linear representations of π_1(S,*). Our bracket extends the well-known Poisson bracket on GL_N-invariant functions on this space. Our main tool is a natural structure of a quasi-Poisson double algebra (in the sense of M. Van den Bergh) on the group algebra of π_1(S,*).
We introduce and study knotoids. Knotoids are represented by diagrams in a surface which differ from the usual knot diagrams in that the underlying curve is a segment rather than a circle. Knotoid diagrams are considered up to Reidemeister moves applied away from the endpoints of the underlying segment. We show that knotoids in $S^2$ generalize knots in $S^3$ and study the semigroup of knotoids. We also discuss applications to knots and invariants of knotoids.
We introduce systems of objects and operators in linear monoidal categories called $\hat Ψ$-systems. A $\hat Ψ$-system satisfying several additional assumptions gives rise to a topological invariant of triples (a closed oriented 3-manifold $M$, a principal bundle over $M$, a link in $M$). This construction generalizes the quantum dilogarithmic invariant of links appearing in the original formulation of the volume conjecture. We conjecture that all quantum groups at odd roots of unity give rise to $\hat Ψ$-systems and we verify this conjecture in the case of the Borel subalgebra of quantum $sl_2$.
We prove that if two Tambara-Yamagami categories TY(A,χ,ν) and TY(A',χ',ν') give rise to the same state sum invariants of 3-manifolds and the order of one of the groups A, A' is odd, then ν=ν' and there is a group isomorphism A\approx A' carrying χto χ'. The proof is based on an explicit computation of the state sum invariants for the lens spaces of type (k,1).
We establish an existence and uniqueness theorem for prime decompositions of theta-curves in $3$-manifolds.
We introduce and study algebraic structures underlying 2-dimensional Homotopy Quantum Field Theories (HQFTs) with arbitrary target spaces. These algebraic structures are formalized in the notion of a twisted Frobenius algebra. Our work generalizes results of Brightwell, Turner, and the second author on 2-dimensional HQFTs with simply-connected or aspherical targets.
Given commuting elements a, b of a group G and a group epimorphism q : G' \to G with finite kernel, the set of commuting lifts of a, b to G' is finite (possibly, empty). The second named author obtained a formula for the number of such lifts in terms of representations of Ker q. We apply this formula to several group epimorphisms q with the same kernel. In particular, we analyze the case where Ker q = Q_8 is the quaternion group. We show that in this case the number in question is equal to 0, 8, 16, 24, or 40. We show that all these numbers are realized by some G,G',q,a,b.
We introduce a relation of cobordism for knots in thickened surfaces and study cobordism invariants of such knots.
In analogy with the Thurston norm, we define for an orientable 3-manifold $M$ a numerical function on $H_2(M;Q/Z)$. This function measures the minimal complexity of folded surfaces representing a given homology class. A similar function is defined on the torsion subgroup of $H_1(M)$. These functions are estimated from below in terms of abelian torsions of $M$.
We extend several classical invariants of links in the 3-sphere to links in so-called quasi-cylinders. These invariants include the linking number, the Seifert form, the Alexander module, the Alexander-Conway polynomial and the Murasugi-Tristram-Levine signatures.
We construct a functor from the category of oriented tangles in R^3 to the category of Hermitian modules and Lagrangian relations over Z[t,t^{-1}]. This functor extends the Burau representations of the braid groups and its generalization to string links due to Le Dimet.
A virtual string is a scheme of self-intersections of a closed curve on a surface. We study algebraic invariants of strings as well as two equivalence relations on the set of strings: homotopy and cobordism. We show that the homotopy invariants of strings form an infinite dimensional Lie group. We also discuss connections between virtual strings and virtual knots.
We introduce a norm on the real 1-cohomology of finite 2-complexes determined by the Euler characteristics of graphs on these complexes. We also introduce twisted Alexander-Fox polynomials of groups and show that they give rise to norms on the real 1-cohomology of groups. Our main theorem states that for a finite 2-complex X, the norm on H^1(X; R) determined by graphs on X majorates the Alexander-Fox norms derived from π_1(X).
We give a surgery formula for the torsions and Seiberg-Witten invariants associated with $Spin^c$-structures on 3-manifolds. We use the technique of Reidemeister-type torsions and their refinements.
For any finite-dimensional Lie bialgebra $g$, we construct a bialgebra $A_{u,v}(g)$ over the ring $C[u][[v]]$, which quantizes simultaneously the universal enveloping bialgebra $U({g})$, the bialgebra dual to $U(g^*)$, and the symmetric bialgebra $S(g)$. We call $A_{u,v}(g)$ a biquantization of $S(g)$. We show that the bialgebra $A_{u,v}(g^*)$ quantizing $U(g^*)$, $U(g)^*$, and $S(g^*)$ is essentially dual to the bialgebra obtained from $A_{u,v}(g)$ by exchanging $u$ and $v$. Thus, $A_{u,v}(g)$ contains all information about the quantization of $g$. Our construction extends Etingof and Kazhdan's one-variable quantization of $U(g)$.
