Anti-collinear resummation in JIMWLK evolution in the linear regime

The recently-proposed resummation procedure for anti-collinear logarithms in the JIMWLK kernel~\cite{Kovner:2023vsy} is studied in the linear (BFKL) regime in the fixed-coupling approximation. Simple closed form expressions for the resummed momentum space kernel and characteristic function $χ(n,γ)$ are found. We find that the anti-collinear pole in the leading order characteristic function at $γ=1$ disappears, and instead $χ(γ=1)=\frac{12}{11}\fracπ{α_sN_c}$ for $n_F=0$. Comparison with the known NLO BFKL eigenvalue, with the target-Bjorken limit ($Q_T\gg Q_P$) of the $γ^*(Q_P)+γ^*(Q_T)$-scattering amplitude and with the ``all-poles'' resummation prescription are presented.

Dynamics of non-Gaussian fluctuations in model A

Motivated by the experimental search for the QCD critical point we perform simulations of a stochastic field theory with purely relaxational dynamics (model A). We verify the expected dynamic scaling of correlation functions. Using a finite size scaling analysis we obtain the dynamic critical exponent $z=2.026(56)$. We investigate time dependent correlation functions of higher moments $M^n(t)$ of the order parameter $M(t)$ for $n=1,2,3,4$. We obtain dynamic scaling with the same critical exponent $z$ for all $n$, but the relaxation constant depends on $n$. We also study the relaxation of $M^n(t)$ after a quench, where the simulation is initialized in the high temperature phase, and the dynamics is studied at the critical temperature $T_c$. We find that the evolution does not follow simple scaling with the dynamic exponent $z$, and that it involves an early time rise followed by late stage relaxation.

Sub-femtometer scale color charge correlations in the proton

Color charge correlations in the proton at moderately small $x\sim 0.1$ are extracted from its light-cone wave function. The charge fluctuations are far from Gaussian and they exhibit interesting dependence on impact parameter and on the relative transverse momentum (or distance) of the gluon probes. We provide initial conditions for small-$x$ Balitsky-Kovchegov evolution of the dipole scattering amplitude with impact parameter and $\hat r \cdot \hat b$ dependence, and with non-zero $C$-odd component due to three-gluon exchange. Lastly, we compute the (forward) Weizsaecker-Williams gluon distributions, including the distribution of linearly polarized gluons, up to fourth order in $A^+$. The correction due to the quartic correlator provides a transverse momentum scale, $q > 0.5$ GeV, for nearly maximal polarization.

Universality driven analytic structure of QCD crossover: radius of convergence and QCD critical point

Recent lattice QCD calculations show strong indications that the crossover of QCD at zero baryon chemical potential ($μ_B$) is a remnant of the second order chiral phase transition. The non-universal parameters needed to map temperature $T$ and $μ_B$ to the universal properties of the second order chiral phase transition were determined by lattice QCD calculations. Motivated by these advances, first, we discuss the analytic structure of the partition function -- the so-called Yang-Lee edge singularity -- in the QCD crossover regime, solely based on universal properties. Then, utilizing the lattice calculated non-universal parameters, we map this singularity to the real $T$ and complex $μ_B$ plane, in order to find the radius of convergence for a Taylor series expansion of QCD partition function around $μ_B=0$ in the QCD crossover regime. Our most important findings are: (i) An universality-based estimate of the radius of convergence around $μ_B=0$; (ii) Universality and lattice QCD based constraints on the location of the QCD critical point in the $T-μ_B$ plane.

Anisotropic particle production and azimuthal correlations in high-energy pA collisions

We summarize some recent ideas relating to anisotropic particle production in high-energy collisions. Anisotropic gluon distributions lead to anisotropies of the single-particle azimuthal distribution and hence to disconnected contributions to multi-particle cumulants. When these dominate, the four-particle elliptic anisotropy $c_2\{4\}$ changes sign. On the other hand, connected diagrams for $m$-particle cumulants are found to quickly saturate with increasing $m$, a ``coherence'' quite unlike conventional ``non-flow'' contributions such as decays. Finally, we perform a first exploratory phenomenological analysis in order to estimate the amplitude ${\cal A}$ of the $\cos(2φ)$ anisotropy of the gluon distribution at small $x$, and we provide a qualitative prediction for the elliptic asymmetry from three-particle correlations, $c_2\{3\}$.

Anisotropy of the semi-classical gluon field of a large nucleus at high energy

The McLerran-Venugopalan model describes a highly boosted hadron/nucleus as a sheet of random color charges which source soft classical Weizsäcker-Williams gluon fields. We show that due to fluctuations, individual configurations are azimuthally anisotropic. We present initial evidence that impact parameter dependent small-x JIMWLK resummation preserves such anisotropies over several units of rapidity. Finally, we compute the first four azimuthal Fourier amplitudes of the S-matrix of a fundamental dipole in such background fields.

Azimuthal asymmetries and the emergence of "collectivity" from multi-particle correlations in high-energy pA collisions

We show how angular asymmetries $\sim\cos 2ϕ$ can arise in dipole scattering at high energies. We illustrate the effects due to anisotropic fluctuations of the saturation momentum of the target with a finite correlation length in the transverse impact parameter plane, i.e.\ from a domain-like structure. We compute the two-particle azimuthal cumulant in this model including both one-particle factorizable as well as genuine two-particle non-factorizable contributions to the two-particle cross section. We also compute the full BBGKY hierarchy for the four-particle azimuthal cumulant and find that only the fully factorizable contribution to $c_2\{4\}$ is negative while all contributions from genuine two, three and four-particle correlations are positive. Our results may provide some qualitative insight into the origin of azimuthal asymmetries in p+Pb collisions at the LHC which reveal a change of sign of $c_2\{4\}$ in high-multiplicity events.

Centrality dependence of high energy jets in p+Pb collisions at the LHC

The recently measured centrality dependence of high energy jets in proton-lead collisions at the LHC is investigated. We hypothesize that events with jets of very high energy (a few hundred GeV) are characterized by a suppressed number of soft particles, thus shifting these events into more peripheral bins. This naturally results in the suppression (enhancement) of the nuclear modification factor, $R_{pA}$, in central (peripheral) collisions. Our calculations suggest that a moderate suppression of the order of $20\%$, for $10^{3}$ GeV jets, can quantitatively reproduce the experimental data. We further extract the suppression factor as a function of jet energy and test our conjecture using available $R_{pA}$ data for various centralities.

Finite Numbers of Sources, Particle Correlations and the Color Glass Condensate

We show that for a finite number of emitting sources, the Color Glass Condensate produces substantial elliptic azimuthal anisotropy, characterized by $v_2$, for two and four particle correlations for momentum greater than or of the order the saturation momentum. The flow produced has the correct semi-quantitative features to describe flow seen in LHC experiments with p-Pb and pp collisions. This flow is induced by quantum mechanical interference between the waves of produced particles, and the flow itself is coupled to fluctuations in the positions of emitting sources. We shortly discuss generalizing these results to odd $v_n$, to correlations involving larger number of particles, and to transverse momentum scales $Λ_{\rm QCD} \ll p_T \ll Q_{\rm sat}$.

High order cumulants of the azimuthal anisotropy in the dilute-dense limit: Connected graphs

We analytically compute higher order cumulants of the azimuthal anisotropy, $c_2\{2m\}$, and corresponding $v_2\{2m\}$ at high transverse momentum in the dilute-dense limit. The dense target is considered in the framework of the McLerran-Venugopolan model. The absolute values of the harmonics $v_2\{2m\}$ of the azimuthal anisotropy are approximately equal, $|v_2\{2m\}| \approx |v_2\{2m'\}| $, for large $m$ and $m'$. However, the harmonics with order $2m=4n$ are complex. We argue that this is a generic property of connected graphs, which remains true in the dense-dense limit.

Multi-particle eccentricities in collisions dominated by fluctuations

We compute analytically the multi-particle eccentricities, ε_m {2n}, for systems dominated by fluctuations, such as proton-nucleus collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. In particular, we derive a general relation for <ε_2^{2n}>. We further discuss the relations between various multi-particle eccentricities and demonstrate that ε_2{2} > ε_2{4} \simeq ε_2{6} \simeq ε_2{8}, in agreement with recent numerical calculations in a Glauber model.

The distribution of linearly polarized gluons and elliptic azimuthal anisotropy in DIS dijet production at high energy

We determine the distribution of linearly polarized gluons of a dense target at small $x$ by solving the B-JIMWLK rapidity evolution equations. From these solutions we estimate the amplitude of $\sim \cos 2ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetries in DIS dijet production at high energies. We find sizeable long-range in rapidity azimuthal asymmetries with a magnitude in the range of $v_2=\langle\cos 2ϕ\rangle \sim 10\%$.

Anisotropy of photon production: Initial eccentricity or magnetic field

Recent measurements of the azimuthal anisotropy of direct photons in heavy-ion collisions at the energies of RHIC show that it is of the same order as the hadronic one. This finding appears to contradict the expected dominance of photon production from a quark-gluon plasma at an early stage of a heavy-ion collision. A possible explanation of the strong azimuthal anisotropy of the photons, given recently, is based on the presence of a large magnetic field in the early phase of a collision. In this letter, we propose a method to experimentally measure the degree to which a magnetic field in heavy-ion collisions is responsible for the observed anisotropy of photon production. The experimental test proposed in this letter may potentially change our understanding of the non-equilibrium stage and possible thermalization in heavy-ion collisions.

Average transverse momentum of hadrons in proton-nucleus collisions in the wounded nucleon model

In the wounded nucleon model, a proton-nucleus (p+A) collision is a superposition of independent nucleon-nucleon collisions. We use this model to calculate the average transverse momentum of pions, kaons and protons in high energy p+A collisions. For the same number of produced particles, because the number of participants differs, in the wounded nucleon model the transverse momentum of hadrons can differ between p+p and p+A collisions. In this model we find that the average transverse momentum in high multiplicity p+A collisions depends weakly on the number of produced particles, and underestimates the preliminary experimental data at the LHC. The difference is small for pions and greater for kaons and protons. The magnitude of this difference is consistent with hydrodynamic expectations.

Decisive test of color coherence in proton-nucleus collisions at the LHC

Proton-nucleus collisions (p+A) at LHC energies provide a rigorous test of the Color Glass Condensate (CGC), a model proposed to describe the high energy limit of Quantum Chromodynamics. In the CGC the average multiplicity of charged particles at midrapidity in p+A collisions depends logarithmically on the number of participants, $N_{part}$. In contrast, the Wounded Nucleon Model (WNM) of independent nucleon-nucleon scatterings, verified at RHIC energies, predicts that multiplicity in p+A depends linearly on $N_{part}$. We argue that for the first time, the dependence of mean multiplicity on $N_{part}$ in p+A collisions at LHC energies can single out a model of particle production, thus offering a stringent test of the CGC and the WNM. Based on this observation we propose a novel experimental test of color coherence in p+A collisions.

Net baryon number probability distribution near the chiral phase transition

We discuss properties of the net baryon number probability distribution near the chiral phase transition to explore the effect of critical fluctuations. Our studies are performed within Landau theory, where the coefficients of the polynomial potential are parametrized, so as to reproduce the mean-field (MF), the $Z(2)$ and $O(4)$ scaling behaviors of the cumulants of the net baryon number. We show, that in the critical region, the structure of the probability distribution changes, dependently on values of the critical exponents. In the MF approach, as well as in the $Z(2)$ universality class, the contribution of the singular part of the thermodynamic potential tends to broaden the distribution. By contrast, in the model with $O(4)$ scaling, the contribution of the singular part results in a narrower net baryon number probability distribution with a wide tail.

Net quark number probability distribution near the chiral crossover transition

We investigate properties of the probability distribution of the net quark number near the chiral crossover transition in the quark-meson model. The calculations are performed within the functional renormalization group approach, as well as in the mean-field approximation. We find, that there is a substantial influence of the underlying chiral phase transition on the properties of the probability distribution. In particular, for a physical pion mass, the distribution which includes the effect of mesonic fluctuations, differs considerably from both, the mean-field and Skellam distributions. The latter is considered as a reference for a non-critical behavior. A characteristic feature of the net quark number probability distribution is that, in the vicinity of the chiral crossover transition in the O(4) universality class, it is narrower than the corresponding mean-field and Skellam function. We study the volume dependence of the probability distribution, as well as the resulting cumulants, and discuss their approximate scaling properties.

The rapidity dependence of the average transverse momentum in p+Pb collisions at the LHC: the Color Glass Condensate versus hydrodynamics

We show that in proton-lead (p+Pb) collisions at the LHC, the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) and hydrodynamics lead to qualitatively different behavior of the average transverse momentum, <p_T>, with the particles rapidity. In hydrodynamics, the <p_T> decreases as one goes from zero rapidity, y=0, to the proton fragmentation region since the number of particles decreases. In contrast, in the CGC the saturation momentum increases as one goes from y=0 to the proton fragmentation region, and so the <p_T> increases. At the LHC, the difference between the two models may be large enough to be tested experimentally.

Anomalous baryon production in heavy ion collisions at LHC energies

In ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions the baryon-meson ratio is not fully understood in the intermediate-to-high transverse momentum region. Although quark coalescence methods combined with jet fragmentation yield results close to the experimental data, some tendencies are not reproduced and require further investigation. We propose a new channel, namely extra quark-antiquark and diquark-antidiquark pair production from coherent gluon field created in the early stage of heavy ion collisions. This process is described quantitatively by the time-dependent Schwinger-mechanism. The extra diquark-quark coalescence yields are able to explain the measured anomalous baryon production.

Baryon number conservation and the cumulants of the net proton distribution

We discuss the modification of the cumulants of the net baryon and net proton distributions due to the global conservation of baryon number in heavy-ion collisions. Corresponding probability distributions and their cumulants are derived analytically. We show that the conservation of baryon number results in a substantial decrease of higher order cumulants. Based on our studies, we propose an observable that is insensitive to the modifications due to baryon number conservation.

Conformal anomaly as a source of soft photons in heavy ion collisions

We introduce a novel photon production mechanism stemming from the conformal anomaly of QCDxQED and the existence of strong (electro)magnetic fields in heavy ion collisions. Using the hydrodynamical description of the bulk modes of QCD plasma, we show that this mechanism leads to the photon production yield that is comparable to the yield from conventional sources. This mechanism also provides a significant positive contribution to the azimuthal anisotropy of photons, $v_2$, as well as to the radial "flow". We compare our results to the data from the PHENIX Collaboration.

Electroweak Instantons, Axions, and the Cosmological Constant

If there is explicit violation of baryon plus lepton number at some energy scale, then the electroweak theory depends upon a θ-angle. Due to a singular integration over small scale size instantons, this θ-dependence is sensitive to very high momentum scales. Assuming that there is no new physics between the electroweak and Planck scales, for an electroweak axion the energy difference between the vacuum at θ /= 0, and that at θ = 0, is of the correct order of magnitude to be the dark energy observed in the present epoch.

Event-by-event fluctuations of magnetic and electric fields in heavy ion collisions

We show that fluctuating proton positions in the colliding nuclei generate, on the event-by-event basis, very strong magnetic and electric fields in the direction both parallel and perpendicular to the reaction plane. The magnitude of E and B fields in each event is of the order of m_pi^2 \approx 10^18 Gauss. Implications on the observation of electric dipole in heavy ion collisions is discussed, and the possibility of measuring the electric conductivity of the hot medium is pointed out.

Transport coefficients of O(N) scalar field theories close to the critical point

We investigate the critical dynamics of O(N)-symmetric scalar field theories to determine the critical exponents of transport coefficients as a second-order phase transition is approached from the symmetric phase. A set of stochastic equations of motion for the slow modes is formulated, and the long wavelength dynamics is examined for an arbitrary number of field components, $N$, in the framework of the dynamical renormalization group within the $ε$ expansion. We find that for a single component scalar field theory, N=1, the system reduces to the model C of critical dynamics, whereas for $N>1$ the model G is effectively restored owing to dominance of O(N)-symmetric charge fluctuations. In both cases, the shear viscosity remains finite in the critical region. On the other hand, we find that the bulk viscosity diverges as the correlation length squared, for N=1, while it remains finite for $N>1$.

Probing deconfinement in a chiral effective model with Polyakov loop at imaginary chemical potential

The phase structure of the two-flavor Polyakov-loop extended Nambu-Jona-Lashinio model is explored at finite temperature and imaginary chemical potential with a particular emphasis on the confinement-deconfinement transition. We point out that the confined phase is characterized by a $\cos3μ_I/T$ dependence of the chiral condensate on the imaginary chemical potential while in the deconfined phase this dependence is given by $\cosμ_I/T$ and accompanied by a cusp structure induced by the Z(3) transition. We demonstrate that the phase structure of the model strongly depends on the choice of the Polyakov loop potential $\mathcal{U}$. Furthermore, we find that by changing the four fermion coupling constant $G_s$, the location of the critical endpoint of the deconfinement transition can be moved into the real chemical potential region. We propose a new parameter characterizing the confinement-deconfinement transition.

Probing deconfinement in the Polyakov-loop extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model at imaginary chemical potential

The phase structure of Polyakov-loop extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model is explored at imaginary chemical potential, with particular emphasis on the deconfinement transition. We point out that the statistical confinement nature of the model naturally leads to characteristic dependence of the chiral condensate $<\bar{q}q>$ on $θ=μ_I/T$. We introduce a dual parameter for the deconfinement transition by making use of this dependence. By changing a four-fermion coupling constant, we tune the location of the critical endpoint of the deconfinement transition.

Role of mesonic fluctuations in the Polyakov loop extended quark-meson model at imaginary chemical potential

We explore the thermodynamics and phase structure of the Polyakov loop-extended two flavor chiral quark--meson (PQM) model beyond the mean-field approximation at imaginary chemical potential. Our approach is based on the functional renormalization group (FRG) method. At finite temperature and imaginary chemical potential, we solve the renormalization group flow equation for a scale-dependent thermodynamic potential in the presence of the gluonic background field. We determine behavior of order parameters of the PQM model in the FRG approach and compute the phase diagram. We compare our FRG results with that obtained in the mean-field approximation at imaginary chemical potential.

Strange and charm quark-pair production in strong non-Abelian field

We have investigated strange and charm quark-pair production in the early stage of heavy ion collisions. Our kinetic model is based on a Wigner function method for fermion-pair production in strong non-Abelian fields. To describe the overlap of two colliding heavy ions we have applied the time-dependent color field with a pulse-like shape. The calculations have been performed in an SU(2)-color model with finite current quark masses. For strange quark-pair production the obtained results are close to the Schwinger limit, as we expected. For charm quark the large inverse temporal width of the field pulse, instead of the large charm quark mass, determines the efficiency of the quark-pair production. Thus we do not observe the expected suppression of charm quark-pair production connecting to the usual Schwinger-formalism, but our calculation results in a relatively large charm quark yield. This effect appears in Abelian models as well, demonstrating that particle-pair production for fast varying non-Abelian gluon field strongly deviates from the Schwinger limit for charm quark. We display our results on number densities for light, strange, charm quark-pairs, and different suppression factors as the function of characteristic time of acting chromo-electric field.
