Depth optimization of quantum search algorithms beyond Grover's algorithm

Grover's quantum search algorithm provides a quadratic speedup over the classical one. The computational complexity is based on the number of queries to the oracle. However, depth is a more modern metric for noisy intermediate-scale quantum computers. We propose a new depth optimization method for quantum search algorithms. We show that Grover's algorithm is not optimal in depth. We propose a quantum search algorithm, which can be divided into several stages. Each stage has a new initialization, which is a rescaling of the database. This decreases errors. The multistage design is natural for parallel running of the quantum search algorithm.

Thermodynamics of the Topological Kondo Model

Using the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz, we investigate the topological Kondo model, which describes a set of one-dimensional external wires, pertinently coupled to a central region hosting a set of Majorana bound states. After a short review of the Bethe ansatz solution, we study the system at finite temperature and derive its free energy for arbitrary (even and odd) number of external wires. We then analyse the ground state energy as a function of the number of external wires and of their couplings to the Majorana bound states. Then, we compute, both for small and large temperatures, the entropy of the Majorana degrees of freedom localized within the central region and connected to the external wires. Our exact computation of the impurity entropy provides evidence of the importance of fermion parity symmetry in the realization of the topological Kondo model. Finally, we also obtain the low-temperature behaviour of the specific heat of the Majorana bound states, which provides a signature of the non-Fermi-liquid nature of the strongly coupled fixed point.

Local convertibility and the quantum simulation of edge states in many-body systems

In some many-body systems, certain ground state entanglement (Renyi) entropies increase even as the correlation length decreases. This entanglement non-monotonicity is a potential indicator of non-classicality. In this work we demonstrate that such a phenomenon, known as non-local convertibility, is due to the edge state (de)construction occurring in the system. To this end, we employ the example of the Ising chain, displaying an order-disorder quantum phase transitions. Employing both analytical and numerical methods, we compute entanglement entropies for various system bipartitions (A|B) and consider ground states with and without Majorana edge states. We find that the thermal ground states, enjoying the Hamiltonian symmetries, show non-local convertibility if either A or B are smaller than, or of the order of, the correlation length. In contrast, the ordered (symmetry breaking) ground state is always locally convertible. The edge states behavior explains all these results and could disclose a paradigm to understand local convertibility in other quantum phases of matter. The connection we establish between convertibility and non-local, quantum correlations provides a clear criterion of which features a universal quantum simulator should possess to outperform a classical machine.

Classical Vs Quantum correlations in composite systems

Here we provide the contributions' abstracts published in a volume we edited as a special issue in International Journal of Modern Physics B. The volume deals with the recent progress in quantifying quantum correlations beyond the generic notion of 'correlations in a quantum system'. The main goal of the special issue is to provide authoritative reviews on selected topics discussed in the field in the last few years. Nevertheless many articles contain significant original research. The opening section of the issue is dedicated to foundational aspects of quantum mechanics. The second section deals with diverse quantum information insights into the analysis of quantum resources (like entanglement and quantum discord). Many of the concepts presented in the first part of the issue are applied to spin systems in the third section. The last section of the issue is focused on the dynamics of quantum discord in open systems and in quantum communication protocols.

Entanglement spectra of q-deformed higher spin VBS states

We calculate the reduced density matrix of a block of integer spin-S's in a q-deformed valence-bond-solid (VBS) state. This matrix is diagonalized exactly for an infinitely long block in an infinitely long chain. We construct an effective Hamiltonian with the same spectrum as the logarithm of the density matrix. We also derive analytic expressions for the von Neumann and Rényi entanglement entropies. For blocks of finite length, we calculate the eigenvalues of the reduced density matrix by perturbation theory and numerical diagonalization. These results enable us to describe the effects of finite-size corrections on the entanglement spectrum and entropy in this generalized VBS model.

Entanglement spectra of the q-deformed Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki model and matrix product states

We exactly calculate the reduced density matrix of matrix product states (MPS). Our compact result enables one to perform analytic studies of entanglement in MPS. In particular, we consider the MPS ground states of two anisotropic spin chains. One is a q-deformed Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) model and the other is a general spin-1 quantum antiferromagnet with nearest-neighbor interactions. Our analysis shows how anisotropy affects entanglement on different continuous parameter manifolds. We also construct an effective boundary spin model that describes a block of spins in the ground state of the q-deformed AKLT Hamiltonian. The temperature of this effective model is given in terms of the deformation parameter q.

Numerical Contraction of the Tensor Network generated by the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz

The algebraic Bethe Ansatz is a prosperous and well-established method for solving one-dimensional quantum models exactly. The solution of the complex eigenvalue problem is thereby reduced to the solution of a set of algebraic equations. Whereas the spectrum is usually obtained directly, the eigenstates are available only in terms of complex mathematical expressions. This makes it very hard in general to extract properties from the states, like, for example, correlation functions. In our work, we apply the tools of Tensor Network States to describe the eigenstates approximately as Matrix Product States. From the Matrix Product State expression, we then obtain observables like correlation functions directly.

Optimal correlations in many-body quantum systems

Information and correlations in a quantum system are closely related through the process of measurement. We explore such relation in a many-body quantum setting, effectively bridging between quantum metrology and condensed matter physics. To this aim we adopt the information-theory view of correlations, and study the amount of correlations after certain classes of Positive-Operator-Valued Measurements are locally performed. As many-body system we consider a one-dimensional array of interacting two-level systems (a spin chain) at zero temperature, where quantum effects are most pronounced. We demonstrate how the optimal strategy to extract the correlations depends on the quantum phase through a subtle interplay between local interactions and coherence.

Quantum phase transition in a multicomponent anyonic Lieb-Liniger model

We study a one-dimensional multicomponent anyon model that reduces to a multicomponent Lieb-Liniger gas of impenetrable bosons (Tonks-Girardeau gas) for vanishing statistics parameter. At fixed component densities, the coordinate Bethe ansatz gives a family of quantum phase transitions at special values of the statistics parameter. We show that the ground state energy changes extensively between different phases. Special regimes are studied and a general classification for the transition points is given. An interpretation in terms of statistics of composite particles is proposed.

Entanglement in bipartite pure states of an interacting boson gas obtained by local projective measurements

We quantify the extractable entanglement of excited states of a Lieb-Liniger gas that are obtained from coarse-grained measurements on the ground state in which the boson number in one of two complementary contiguous partitions of the gas is determined. Numerically exact results obtained from the coordinate Bethe ansatz show that the von Neumann entropy of the resulting bipartite pure state increases monotonically with the strength of repulsive interactions and saturates to the impenetrable boson limiting value. We also present evidence indicating that the largest amount of entanglement can be extracted from the most probable projected state having half the number of bosons in a given partition. Our study points to a fundamental difference between the nature of the entanglement in free-bosonic and free-fermionic systems, with the entanglement in the former being zero after projection, while that in the latter (corresponding to the impenetrable boson limit) being non-zero.

Entanglement in Valence-Bond-Solid States

This article reviews the quantum entanglement in Valence-Bond-Solid (VBS) states defined on a lattice or a graph. The subject is presented in a self-contained and pedagogical way. The VBS state was first introduced in the celebrated paper by I. Affleck, T. Kennedy, E. H. Lieb and H. Tasaki (abbreviation AKLT is widely used). It became essential in condensed matter physics and quantum information (measurement-based quantum computation). Many publications have been devoted to the subject. Recently entanglement was studied in the VBS state. In this review we start with the definition of a general AKLT spin chain and the construction of VBS ground state. In order to study entanglement, a block subsystem is introduced and described by the density matrix. Density matrices of 1-dimensional models are diagonalized and the entanglement entropies (the von Neumann entropy and Renyi entropy) are calculated. In the large block limit, the entropies also approach finite limits. Study of the spectrum of the density matrix led to the discovery that the density matrix is proportional to a projector.

Perturbative correction to the ground state properties of one-dimensional strongly interacting bosons in a harmonic trap

We calculate the first-order perturbation correction to the ground state energy and chemical potential of a harmonically trapped boson gas with contact interactions about the infinite repulsion Tonks-Girardeau limit. With $c$ denoting the interaction strength, we find that for a large number of particles $N$ the $1/c$ correction to the ground state energy increases as $N^{5/2}$, in contrast to the unperturbed Tonks-Girardeau value that is proportional to $N^2$. We describe a thermodynamic scaling limit for the trapping frequency that yields an extensive ground state energy and reproduces the zero temperature thermodynamics obtained by a local density approximation.

Non-conformal asymptotic behavior of the time-dependent field-field correlators of 1D anyons

The exact large time and distance behavior of the field-field correlators has been computed for one-dimensional impenetrable anyons at finite temperatures. The result reproduces known asymptotics for impenetrable bosons and free fermions in the appropriate limits of the statistics parameter. The obtained asymptotic behavior of the correlators is dominated by the singularity in the spectral density of the quasiparticle states at the bottom of the band, and differs from the predictions of the conformal field theory. One can argue, however, that the anyonic response to the low-energy probes is still determined by the conformal terms in the asymptotic expansion.

One-Dimensional Impenetrable Anyons in Thermal Equilibrium. III. Large distance asymptotics of the space correlations

Using the determinant representation for the field-field correlation functions of impenetrable anyons at finite temperature obtained in a previous paper, we derive a system of nonlinear partial differential equations completely characterizing the correlators. The system is the same as the one for impenetrable bosons but with different initial conditions. The large-distance asymptotic behavior of the correlation functions is obtained from the analysis of the Riemann-Hilbert problem associated with the system of differential equations. We calculate both the exponential and pre-exponential factors in the asymptotics of the field-field correlators. The asymptotics derived in this way agree with those of the free fermions and impenetrable bosons in the appropriate limits, $κ\to 1$ and $κ\to 0$, of the statistics parameter $κ$, and coincide with the predictions of the conformal field theory at low temperatures.

One-Dimensional Impenetrable Anyons in Thermal Equilibrium. IV. Large Time and Distance Asymptotic Behavior of the Correlation Functions

This work presents the derivation of the large time and distance asymptotic behavior of the field-field correlation functions of impenetrable one-dimensional anyons at finite temperature. In the appropriate limits of the statistics parameter, we recover the well-known results for impenetrable bosons and free fermions. In the low-temperature (usually expected to be the "conformal") limit, and for all values of the statistics parameter away from the bosonic point, the leading term in the correlator does not agree with the prediction of the conformal field theory, and is determined by the singularity of the density of the single-particle states at the bottom of the single-particle energy spectrum.

Large-Distance Asymptotic Behavior of the Correlation Functions of 1D Impenetrable Anyons at Finite Temperatures

The large-distance asymptotic behavior of the field-field correlators has been computed for one-dimensional impenetrable anyons at finite temperatures. The asymptotic behavior agrees with the predictions of conformal field theory at low temperatures and reproduces the known results for impenetrable bosons and free fermions in appropriate limits. We have also obtained an integrable system of partial nonlinear differential equations which completely characterizes the 2-point correlation functions. The system is the same as for bosons but with different initial conditions.

Spectrum of Low-Lying Excitations in a Supersymmetric Extended Hubbard Model

We continue the study of the $u(2|2)$-supersymmetric extension of the Hubbard model in one dimension. We determine the excitation spectrum at zero temperature even in the sectors where the ground states are $u(2|2)$-descendants of Bethe states. The excitations include spinons, holons, electrons, localons (local electrons pairs, moving coherently through the lattice) and their bound states. The spectra are found to be very different for repulsive and attractive on-site interaction. We also study the thermodynamics of the model.
