Heavy rigid body with a gyroscope in $\mathbb R^n$

Starting from the following multidimensional integrable generalizations of the heavy rigid body systems: the Euler top, the Lagrange top, the Lagrange bitop, and the totally symmetric case, we add to each of them a gyroscope. For each of the newly constructed systems, we provide a polynomial matrix Lax representation and prove Liouville integrability. We also present Zhukovskiy's geometric representation of motion of the Euler top with a gyroscope.

Billiard Ordered Games and Books

The aim of this work is to put together two novel concepts from the theory of integrable billiards: billiard ordered games and confocal billiard books. Billiard books appeared recently in the work of Fomenko's school, in particular of V. Vedyushkina. These more complex billiard domains are obtained by gluing planar sets bounded by arcs of confocal conics along common edges. Such domains are used in this paper to construct the configuration space for billiard ordered games. We analyse dynamical and topological properties of the systems obtained in that way.

Spherical and planar ball bearings -- nonholonomic systems with invariant measures

We first construct nonholonomic systems of $n$ homogeneous balls $\mathbf B_1,\dots,\mathbf B_n$ with centers $O_1,...,O_n$ and with the same radius $r$ that are rolling without slipping around a fixed sphere $\mathbf S_0$ with center $O$ and radius $R$. In addition, it is assumed that a dynamically nonsymmetric sphere $\mathbf S$ of radius $R+2r$ and the center that coincides with the center $O$ of the fixed sphere $\mathbf S_0$ rolls without slipping over the moving balls $\mathbf B_1,\dots,\mathbf B_n$. We prove that these systems possess an invariant measure. As the second task, we consider the limit, when the radius $R$ tends to infinity. We obtain a corresponding planar problem consisting of $n$ homogeneous balls $\mathbf B_1,\dots,\mathbf B_n$ with centers $O_1,...,O_n$ and the same radius $r$ that are rolling without slipping over a fixed plane $Σ_0$, and a moving plane $Σ$ that moves without slipping over the homogeneous balls. We prove that this system possesses an invariant measure and that it is integrable in quadratures according to the Euler-Jacobi theorem.

Demchenko's nonholonomic case of gyroscopic ball rolling without sliding over a sphere after his 1923 Belgrade doctoral thesis

We present an integrable nonholonomic case of rolling without sliding of a gyroscopic ball over a sphere. This case was introduced and studied in detail by Vasilije Demchenko in his 1923 doctoral dissertation defended at the University of Belgrade, with Anton Bilimovic as the advisor. These results are absolutely unknown to modern researchers. The study is based on the C. Neumann coordinates and the Voronec principle. By using involved technique of elliptic functions, a detailed study of motion is performed. Several special classes of trajectories are distinguished, including regular and pseudo-regular precessions. So-called remarkable trajectories, introduced by Paul Painleve and Anton Bilimovic, are described in the present case. The historic context as well as the place of the results in contemporary mechanics are outlined.

Algebro-geometric solutions of the Schlesinger systems and the Poncelet-type polygons in higher dimensions

A new method to construct algebro-geometric solutions of rank two Schlesinger systems is presented. For an elliptic curve represented as a ramified double covering of CP^1, a meromorphic differential is constructed with the following property: the common projection of its two zeros on the base of the covering, regarded as a function of the only moving branch point of the covering, is a solution of a Painleve VI equation. This differential provides an invariant formulation of a classical Okamoto transformation for the Painleve VI equations. A generalization of this differential to hyperelliptic curves is also constructed. In this case, positions of zeros of the differential provide part of a solution of the multidimensional Garnier system. The corresponding solutions of the rank two Schlesinger systems associated with elliptic and hyperelliptic curves are constructed in terms of this differential. The initial data for construction of the meromorphic differential include a point in the Jacobian of the curve, under the assumption that this point has nonvariable coordinates with respect to the lattice of the Jacobian while the branch points vary. It appears that the cases where the coordinates of the point are rational correspond to periodic trajectories of the billiard ordered games associated with g confocal quadrics in (g+1)-dimensional space. This is a generalization of a situation studied by Hitchin, who related algebraic solutions of a Painleve VI equation with the Poncelet polygons.

Discriminantly separable polynomials and quad-equations

We classify the discriminantly separable polynomials of degree two in each of three variables, defined by a property that all the discriminants as polynomials of two variables are factorized as products of two polynomials of one variable each. Our classification is based on the study of structures of zeros of a polynomial component $P$ of a discriminant. This classification is related to the classification of pencils of conics in a delicate way. We establish a relationship between our classification and the classification of integrable quad-equations which has been suggested recently by Adler, Bobenko, and Suris.

Bicentennial of the Great Poncelet Theorem (1813-2013): Current Advances

The paper gives a review of very recent results related to the Poncelet Theorem, on the occasion of its bicentennial. We are telling the story of one of the most beautiful theorems of Geometry, recalling for the general mathematical audience the dramatic historic circumstances which led to its discovery, a glimpse of its intrinsic appeal, and importance of its relationship to the dynamics of billiards within confocal conics. We focus on the three main issues: A) The case of Pseudo-Euclidean spaces, presenting a recent notion of relativistic quadrics, and applying it to the description of periodic trajectories of billiards within quadrics. B) The relationship between so-called billiard algebra and foundations of modern discrete differential geometry which leads to the Double-reflection nets. C) We introduce a new class of dynamical systems -- pseudo-integrable billiards generated by the boundary composed of several arcs of confocal conics having nonconvex angles. The dynamics of such billiards has several extraordinary properties. They are related to the interval exchange transformations and generate families of flows which are minimal but not uniquely ergodic. This type of dynamics provides a novel type of the Poncelet porisms -- the local ones.

Systems of the Kowalevski type and discriminantly separable polynomials

Starting from the notion of discriminantly separable polynomials of degree two in each of three variables, we construct a class of integrable dynamical systems. These systems can be integrated explicitly in genus two theta-functions in a procedure which is similar to the classical one for the Kowalevski top. The discriminnatly separable polynomials play the role of the Kowalevski fundamental equation. The natural examples include the Sokolov systems and the Jurdjevic elasticae.

Billiard algebra, integrable line congruences, and double reflection nets

The billiard systems within quadrics, playing the role of discrete analogues of geodesics on ellipsoids, are incorporated into the theory of integrable quad-graphs. An initial observation is that the Six-pointed star theorem, as the operational consistency for the billiard algebra, is equivalent to an integrabilty condition of a line congruence. A new notion of the double-reflection nets as a subclass of dual Darboux nets associated with pencils of quadrics is introduced, basic properies and several examples are presented. Corresponding Yang-Baxter maps, associated with pencils of quadrics are defined and discussed.

Ellipsoidal billiards in pseudo-Euclidean spaces and relativistic quadrics

We study geometry of confocal quadrics in pseudo-Euclidean spaces of an arbitrary dimension $d$ and any signature, and related billiard dynamics. The goal is to give a complete description of periodic billiard trajectories within ellipsoids. The novelty of our approach is based on introduction of a new discrete combinatorial-geometric structure associated to a confocal pencil of quadrics, a colouring in $d$ colours, by which we decompose quadrics of $d+1$ geometric types of a pencil into new relativistic quadrics of $d$ relativistic types. Deep insight of related geometry and combinatorics comes from our study of what we call discriminat sets of tropical lines $Σ^+$ and $Σ^-$ and their singularities. All of that enable usto get an analytic criterion describing all periodic billiard trajectories, including the light-like ones as those of a special interest.

Singular Manakov Flows and Geodesic Flows on Homogeneous Spaces

We prove complete integrability of the Manakov-type SO(n)-invariant geodesic flows on homogeneous spaces $SO(n)/SO(k_1)\times...\times SO(k_r)$, for any choice of $k_1,...,k_r$, $k_1+...+k_r\le n$. In particular, a new proof of the integrability of a Manakov symmetric rigid body motion around a fixed point is presented. Also, the proof of integrability of the SO(n)-invariant Einstein metrics on $SO(k_1+k_2+k_3)/SO(k_1)\times SO(k_2)\times SO(k_3)$ and on the Stiefel manifolds $V(n,k)=SO(n)/SO(k)$ is given.

Two-valued groups, Kummer varieties and integrable billiards

A natural and important question of study two-valued groups associated with hyperelliptic Jacobians and their relationship with integrable systems is motivated by seminal examples of relationship between algebraic two-valued groups related to elliptic curves and integrable systems such as elliptic billiards and celebrated Kowalevski top. The present paper is devoted to the case of genus 2, to the investigation of algebraic two-valued group structures on Kummer varieties. One of our approaches is based on the theory of $σ$-functions. It enables us to study the dependence of parameters of the curves, including rational limits. Following this line, we are introducing a notion of $n$-groupoid as natural multivalued analogue of the notion of topological groupoid. Our second approach is geometric. It is based on a geometric approach to addition laws on hyperelliptic Jacobians and on a recent notion of billiard algebra. Especially important is connection with integrable billiard systems within confocal quadrics. The third approach is based on the realization of the Kummer variety in the framework of moduli of semi-stable bundles, after Narasimhan and Ramanan. This construction of the two-valued structure is remarkably similar to the historically first example of topological formal two-valued group from 1971, with a significant difference: the resulting bundles in the 1971 case were "virtual", while in the present case the resulting bundles are effectively realizable.

Elliptic Curves and a New Construction of Integrable Systems

A class of elliptic curves with associated Lax matrices is considered. A family of dynamical systems on e(3) parametrized by polynomial a with above Lax matrices are constructed. Five cases from the family are selected by the condition of preserving the standard mea- sure. Three of them are Hamiltonian. It is proved that two other cases are not Hamiltonian in the standard Poisson structure on e(3). Integra- bility of all five cases is proven. Integration procedures are performed in all five cases. Separation of variables in Sklyanin sense is also given. A connection with Hess-Appel'rot system is established. A sort of sep- aration of variables is suggested for the Hess-Appel'rot system.

Systems of Hess-Appel'rot Type and Zhukovskii Property

We start with a review of a class of systems with invariant relations, so called {\it systems of Hess--Appel'rot type} that generalizes the classical Hess--Appel'rot rigid body case. The systems of Hess-Appel'rot type carry an interesting combination of both integrable and non-integrable properties. Further, following integrable line, we study partial reductions and systems having what we call the {\it Zhukovskii property}: these are Hamiltonian systems with invariant relations, such that partially reduced systems are completely integrable. We prove that the Zhukovskii property is a quite general characteristic of systems of Hess-Appel'rote type. The partial reduction neglects the most interesting and challenging part of the dynamics of the systems of Hess-Appel'rot type - the non-integrable part, some analysis of which may be seen as a reconstruction problem. We show that an integrable system, the magnetic pendulum on the oriented Grassmannian $Gr^+(4,2)$ has natural interpretation within Zhukovskii property and it is equivalent to a partial reduction of certain system of Hess-Appel'rot type. We perform a classical and an algebro-geometric integration of the system, as an example of an isoholomorphic system. The paper presents a lot of examples of systems of Hess-Appel'rot type, giving an additional argument in favor of further study of this class of systems.

The Wagner Curvature Tensor in Nonholonomic Mechanics

We present the classical Wagner construction from 1935 of the curvature tensor for completely nonholonomic manifolds in both invariant and coordinate way. The starting point is the Shouten curvature tensor for nonholonomic connection introduced by Vranceanu and Shouten. We illustrate the construction on two mechanical examples: the case of a homogeneous disc rolling without sliding on a horizontal plane and the case of a homogeneous ball rolling without sliding on a fixed sphere. In the second case we study the conditions on the ratio of diameters of the ball and the sphere to obtain a flat space - with the Wagner curvature tensor equal zero.
