On the Göttsche Threshold

For a line bundle L on a smooth surface S, it is now known that the degree of the Severi variety of cogenus-d curves is given by a universal polynomial in the Chern classes of L and S if L is d-very ample. For S rational, we relax the latter condition substantially: it suffices that three key loci be of codimension more than d. As corollaries, we prove that the condition conjectured by Göttsche suffices if S is P^2 or S is any Hirzebruch surface, and that a similar condition suffices if S is any classical del Pezzo surface.

On the CNOT-cost of TOFFOLI gates

The three-input TOFFOLI gate is the workhorse of circuit synthesis for classical logic operations on quantum data, e.g., reversible arithmetic circuits. In physical implementations, however, TOFFOLI gates are decomposed into six CNOT gates and several one-qubit gates. Though this decomposition has been known for at least 10 years, we provide here the first demonstration of its CNOT-optimality. We study three-qubit circuits which contain less than six CNOT gates and implement a block-diagonal operator, then show that they implicitly describe the cosine-sine decomposition of a related operator. Leveraging the canonicity of such decompositions to limit one-qubit gates appearing in respective circuits, we prove that the n-qubit analogue of the TOFFOLI requires at least 2n CNOT gates. Additionally, our results offer a complete classification of three-qubit diagonal operators by their CNOT-cost, which holds even if ancilla qubits are available.

Minimal Universal Two-qubit Quantum Circuits

We give quantum circuits that simulate an arbitrary two-qubit unitary operator up to global phase. For several quantum gate libraries we prove that gate counts are optimal in worst and average cases. Our lower and upper bounds compare favorably to previously published results. Temporary storage is not used because it tends to be expensive in physical implementations. For each gate library, best gate counts can be achieved by a single universal circuit. To compute gate parameters in universal circuits, we only use closed-form algebraic expressions, and in particular do not rely on matrix exponentials. Our algorithm has been coded in C++.
