Phase-field approximation of sharp-interface energies accounting for lattice symmetry

We present a phase-field approximation of sharp-interface energies defined on partitions, designed for modeling grain boundaries in polycrystals. The independent variable takes values in the orthogonal group $\mathrm{O}(d)$ modulo a lattice point group $\mathcal{G}$, reflecting the crystallographic symmetries of the underlying lattice. In the sharp-interface limit, the surface energy exhibits a Read-Shockley-type behavior for small misorientation angles, scaling as $θ|\logθ|$. The regularized functionals are applicable to grain growth simulation and the reconstruction of grain boundaries from imaging data.

Singular limits of a coupled elasto-plastic damage system as viscosity and hardening vanish

The paper studies the asymptotic analysis of a model coupling elastoplasticity and damage depending on three parameters -- governing viscosity, plastic hardening, and convergence rate of plastic strain and displacement to equilibrium -- as they vanish in different orders. The notion of limit evolution obtained is proven to coincide in any case with a notion introduced by Crismale and Rossi in 2019; moreover, such solutions are closely related to those obtained in the vanishing-viscosity limit by Crismale and Lazzaroni in 2016, for the analogous model where only the viscosity parameter was present.

A derivation of Griffith functionals from discrete finite-difference models

We analyze a finite-difference approximation of a functional of Ambrosio-Tortorelli type in brittle fracture, in the discrete-to-continuum limit. In a suitable regime between the competing scales, namely if the discretization step $δ$ is smaller than the ellipticity parameter $\varepsilon$, we show the $Γ$-convergence of the model to the Griffith functional, containing only a term enforcing Dirichlet boundary conditions and no $L^p$ fidelity term. Restricting to two dimensions, we also address the case in which a (linearized) constraint of non-interpenetration of matter is added in the limit functional, in the spirit of a recent work by Chambolle, Conti and Francfort.

Equilibrium configurations for epitaxially strained films and material voids in three-dimensional linear elasticity

We extend the results about existence of minimizers, relaxation, and approximation proven by Chambolle et al. in 2002 and 2007 for an energy related to epitaxially strained crystalline films, and by Braides, Chambolle, and Solci in 2007 for a class of energies defined on pairs of function-set. We study these models in the framework of three-dimensional linear elasticity, where a major obstacle to overcome is the lack of any 'a priori' assumption on the integrability properties of displacements. As a key tool for the proofs, we introduce a new notion of convergence for $(d{-}1)$-rectifiable sets that are jumps of $GSBD^p$ functions, called $σ^p_{\mathrm{sym}}$-convergence.

A density result in $GSBD^p$ with applications to the approximation of brittle fracture energies

We prove that any function in $GSBD^p(Ω)$, with $Ω$ a $n$-dimensional open bounded set with finite perimeter, is approximated by functions $u_k\in SBV(Ω;\mathbb{R}^n)\cap L^\infty(Ω;\mathbb{R}^n)$ whose jump is a finite union of $C^1$ hypersurfaces. The approximation takes place in the sense of Griffith-type energies $\int_ΩW(e(u)) \,\mathrm{d}x +\mathcal{H}^{n-1}(J_u)$, $e(u)$ and $J_u$ being the approximate symmetric gradient and the jump set of $u$, and $W$ a nonnegative function with $p$-growth, $p>1$. The difference between $u_k$ and $u$ is small in $L^p$ outside a sequence of sets $E_k\subset Ω$ whose measure tends to 0 and if $|u|^r \in L^1(Ω)$ with $r\in (0,p]$, then $|u_k-u|^r \to 0$ in $L^1(Ω)$. Moreover, an approximation property for the (truncation of the) amplitude of the jump holds. We apply the density result to deduce $Γ$-convergence approximation \emph{à la} Ambrosio-Tortorelli for Griffith-type energies with either Dirichlet boundary condition or a mild fidelity term, such that minimisers are \emph{a priori} not even in $L^1(Ω;\mathbb{R}^n)$.

Exchangeable stochastic processes and symmetric states in quantum probability

We analyze general aspects of exchangeable quantum stochastic processes, as well as some concrete cases relevant for several applications to Quantum Physics and Probability. We establish that there is a one-to-one correspondence between quantum stochastic processes, either preserving or not the identity, and states on free product C*-algebras, unital or not unital respectively, where the exchangeable ones correspond precisely to the symmetric states. We also connect some algebraic properties of exchangeable processes, that is the fact that they satisfy the product state or the block-singleton conditions, to some natural ergodic ones. We then specialize the investigation for the q-deformed Commutation Relations, q in(-1,1) (the case q=0 corresponding to the reduced group C*-algebra of the free group on infinitely many generators), and the Boolean ones. We also provide a generalization of De Finetti Theorem to the Fermi CAR algebra (corresponding to the q-deformed Commutation Relations with q=-1), by showing that any state is symmetric if and only if it is conditionally independent and identically distributed with respect to the tail algebra. The Boolean stochastic processes provide examples for which the condition to be independent and identically distributed w.r.t. the tail algebra, without mentioning the {\it a-priori} existence of a preserving conditional expectation, is in general meaningless in the quantum setting. Finally, we study the ergodic properties of a class of remarkable states on the full group C*-algebra of the free group on infinitely many generators, that is the so-called Haagerup states.

De Finetti theorem on the CAR algebra

The symmetric states on a quasi local C*-algebra on the infinite set of indices J are those invariant under the action of the group of the permutations moving only a finite, but arbitrary, number of elements of J. The celebrated De Finetti Theorem describes the structure of the symmetric states (i.e. exchangeable probability measures) in classical probability. In the present paper we extend De Finetti Theorem to the case of the CAR algebra, that is for physical systems describing Fermions. Namely, after showing that a symmetric state is automatically even under the natural action of the parity automorphism, we prove that the compact convex set of such states is a Choquet simplex, whose extremal (i.e. ergodic w.r.t. the action of the group of permutations previously described) are precisely the product states in the sense of Araki-Moriya. In order to do that, we also prove some ergodic properties naturally enjoyed by the symmetric states which have a self--containing interest.
