Cooperative phase transitions in the system of photons and dye molecules

Bose condensed light can form new phases [1] in a dye filled cavity due to the presence of the orientational disorder created by dye molecules which are essentially frozen on the time scale of the photonic thermalization (few ps). At longer times (few ns) molecular degrees of freedom -- orientations and positions -- become important. Including them on equal footing with photons can change the nature of the photonic condensation -- it can proceed as Ist order phase transition which can also result in the mutual phase separation effect -- for photons and dye. The analysis is conducted within the mean field approach in the thermodynamic limit. Recommendations for the experimental detection of the transition nature are formulated.

Phases and phase transitions of Bose condensed light

Bose-Einstein condensation of light in 2D is characterized by two classical fields corresponding to two polarizations of light as well as by the distribution of dye molecules inducing light thermalization through dipolar transition. In the case when this transition is triple-degenerate the resulting field theory for the condensate of light is O(4) symmetric, which precludes algebraic long range order in 2D at any finite temperature $T$. If the dipolar degeneracy is removed, then, equilibrium phases with lower symmetries -- O(2)$\times$Z$_2$ and O(2) can emerge. Accordingly, algebraic off diagonal order of light condensate becomes possible. An orientationsl disorder introduced by local dipolar anisotropy can destroy algebraic order in one-photon density matrix while preserving it in the two-photon one. This represents formation of the condensate of photon pairs.

Condensation of Photons coupled to a Dicke Field in an Optical Microcavity

Motivated by recent experiments reporting Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of light coupled to incoherent dye molecules in a microcavity, we show that due to a dimensionality mismatch between the 2D cavity-photons and the 3D arrangement of molecules, the relevant molecular degrees of freedom are collective Dicke states rather than individual excitations. For sufficiently high dye concentration the coupling of the Dicke states with light will dominate over local decoherence. This system also shows Mott criticality despite the absence of an underlying lattice in the limit when all dye molecules become excited.

An all-optical event horizon in an optical analogue of a Laval nozzle

Exploiting the fact that light propagation in defocusing nonlinear media can mimic the transonic flow of an equivalent fluid, we demonstrate experimentally the formation of an all-optical event horizon in a waveguide structure akin to a hydrodynamic Laval nozzle. The analogue event horizon, which forms at the nozzle throat is suggested as a novel platform for analogous gravity experiments.
