A new Algorithm Based on Factorization for Heterogeneous Domain Decomposition

Often computational models are too expensive to be solved in the entire domain of simulation, and a cheaper model would suffice away from the main zone of interest. We present for the concrete example of an evolution problem of advection reaction diffusion type a heterogeneous domain decomposition algorithm which allows us to recover a solution that is very close to the solution of the fully viscous problem, but solves only an inviscid problem in parts of the domain. Our new algorithm is based on the factorization of the underlying differential operator, and we therefore call it factorization algorithm. We give a detailed error analysis, and show that we can obtain approximations in the viscous region which are much closer to the viscous solution in the entire domain of simulation than approximations obtained by other heterogeneous domain decomposition algorithms from the literature.

Design and analysis of a Schwarz coupling method for a dimensionally heterogeneous problem

In the present work, we study and analyze an efficient iterative coupling method for a dimensionally heterogeneous problem . We consider the case of 2-D Laplace equation with non symmetric boundary conditions with a corresponding 1-D Laplace equation. We will first show how to obtain the 1-D model from the 2-D one by integration along one direction, by analogy with the link between shallow water equations and the Navier-Stokes system. Then, we will focus on the design of an Schwarz-like iterative coupling method. We will discuss the choice of boundary conditions at coupling interfaces. We will prove the convergence of such algorithms and give some theoretical results related to the choice of the location of the coupling interface, and the control of the difference between a global 2-D reference solution and the 2-D coupled one. These theoretical results will be illustrated numerically.

Asynchronous Implementation of Failure Detectors with partial connectivity and unknown participants

We consider the problem of failure detection in dynamic networks such as MANETs. Unreliable failure detectors are classical mechanisms which provide information about process failures. However, most of current implementations consider that the network is fully connected and that the initial number of nodes of the system is known. This assumption is not applicable to dynamic environments. Furthermore, such implementations are usually timer-based while in dynamic networks there is no upper bound for communication delays since nodes can move. This paper presents an asynchronous implementation of a failure detector for unknown and mobile networks. Our approach does not rely on timers and neither the composition nor the number of nodes in the system are known. We prove that our algorithm can implement failure detectors of class <>S when behavioral properties and connectivity conditions are satisfied by the underlying system.
