Coherent Plasmonic Absorption in the Femtosecond Regime

Dissipation of electromagnetic energy through absorption is a fundamental process that underpins phenomena ranging from photovoltaics to photography, analytical spectroscopy, photosynthesis, and human vision. Absorption is also a dynamic process that depends on the duration of the optical illumination. Here we report on the resonant plasmonic absorption of a nanostructured metamaterial and the non-resonant absorption of an unstructured gold film at different optical pulse durations. By examining the absorption in travelling and standing waves, we observe a plasmonic relaxation time of 11 fs as the characteristic transition time. The metamaterial acts as a beam-splitter with low absorption for shorter pulses, while as a good absorber for longer pulses. The transient nature of the absorption puts a frequency limit of ~90 THz on the bandwidth of coherently-controlled, all-optical switching devices, which is still a thousand times faster than other leading switching technologies.

Multi-photon absorption properties of semiconducting nanomaterials

Multiphoton absorption (MPA) is a nonlinear optical process that involves simultaneous absorption of two or more photons by a material to promote its ground state to an excited state. Multiphoton absorption promises many important applications such as multi-dimensional fluorescence imaging, three dimensional (3D) data storage. Physical and chemical properties of nanometer sized semiconductor materials change drastically due to quantum size effect. Combination of both multiphoton absorption and quantum effects will be an interesting study. Multiphoton absorption of semiconducting nanomaterials is an exciting phenomenon which promotes many important applications. This paper reviews multi-photon absorption properties of different kinds of semiconducting nanomaterials starting from chalcogenide-based nanomaterials to perovskites nanomaterials and their applications in various fields.

Graphene-enhanced, internal-magnetic-field-generated Rabi oscillations in metal-coated Si-SiO2 photoconductive detectors

We report our demonstration of Rabi oscillations in Si-SiO2-Al photoconductive devices with nanosecond laser pulses of a few nJ at room temperature without external magnetic fields. Zeeman splitting of spin quantum states of dopants in silicon is achieved with internal magnetic fields produced by the Al film under excitation of laser pulses. Rabi oscillation frequency is 15 MHz and 25 MHz when photocurrent direction is perpendicular and parallel, respectively, to the propagation direction of linearly-polarized, 532-nm, 7-ns laser pulses. Insertion of graphene buffer layer between Al and SiO2 provides a three-fold enhancement in Rabi oscillation amplitude. This simple-structured, low-cost device operated at room temperature should open a new avenue for future spin-based electronics and optoelectronics.
