Toy model of harmonic and sum frequency generation in 2D nanostructures

Optical nonlinearities of matter are often associated with the response of individual atoms. Here, using a toy oscillator model, we show that in the confined geometry of a two-dimensional dielectric nanoparticle a collective nonlinear response of the atomic array can arise from the Coulomb interactions of the bound optical electrons, even if the individual atoms exhibit no nonlinearity. We determine the multipole contributions to the nonlinear response of nanoparticles and demonstrate that the odd order and even order nonlinear electric dipole moments scale with the area and perimeter of the nanoparticle, respectively.

Building blocks for space-time non-separable pulses

Space-time non-separable pulses hold promise for topological information transfer, probing ultra-fast light-matter interactions and engaging toroidal excitations in matter. Spurred by recent advances in ultra-fast and topological optics, these exotic electromagnetic excitations are now becoming the focus of growing experimental efforts. Many practical questions are yet to be answered regarding their generation, detection and light matter interactions. In particular, can these pulses be constructed from plane waves or other simple but experimentally accessible waves? Here we demonstrate that they can and as an example we provide analytical expressions for the characteristic case of the flying doughnut pulse which allows the expansion and synthesis of the pulse from sets of monochromatic beams, single-cycle pulses, and plane waves.

Dielectric Metamaterials with Toroidal Dipolar Response

Toroidal multipoles are the terms missing in the standard multipole expansion; they are usually overlooked due to their relatively weak coupling to the electromagnetic fields. Here we propose and theoretically study all-dielectric metamaterials of a special class that represent a simple electromagnetic system supporting toroidal dipolar excitations in the THz part of the spectrum. We show that resonant transmission and reflection of such metamaterials is dominated by toroidal dipole scattering, the neglect of which would result in a misunderstanding interpretation of the metamaterials macroscopic response. Due to the unique field configuration of the toroidal mode the proposed metamaterials could serve as a platform for sensing, or enhancement of light absorption and optical nonlinearities.
