Conformal graph directed Markov systems on Carnot groups

We develop a comprehensive theory of conformal graph directed Markov systems in the non-Riemannian setting of Carnot groups equipped with a sub-Riemannian metric. In particular, we develop the thermodynamic formalism and show that, under natural hypotheses, the limit set of an Carnot conformal GDMS has Hausdorff dimension given by Bowen's parameter. We illustrate our results for a variety of examples of both linear and nonlinear iterated function systems and graph directed Markov systems in such sub-Riemannian spaces. These include the Heisenberg continued fractions introduced by Lukyanenko and Vandehey as well as Kleinian and Schottky groups associated to the non-real classical rank one hyperbolic spaces.

Marstrand's density theorem in the Heisenberg group

We prove that if $μ$ is a Radon measure on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^n$ such that the density $Θ^s(μ,\cdot)$, computed with respect to the Korányi metric $d_H$, exists and is positive and finite on a set of positive $μ$ measure, then $s$ is an integer. The proof relies on an analysis of uniformly distributed measures on $(\mathbb{H}^n,d_H)$. We provide a number of examples of such measures, illustrating both the similarities and the striking differences of this sub-Riemannian setting from its Euclidean counterpart.

Some Calderón-Zygmund kernels and their relations to Wolff capacities and rectifiability

We consider the Calderón-Zygmund kernels $K_ {α,n}(x)=(x_i^{2n-1}/|x|^{2n-1+α})_{i=1}^d$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ for $0<α\leq 1$ and $n\in\mathbb{N}$. We show that, on the plane, for $0<α<1$, the capacity associated to the kernels $K_{α,n}$ is comparable to the Riesz capacity $C_{\frac23(2-α),\frac 3 2}$ of non-linear potential theory. As consequences we deduce the semiadditivity and bi-Lipschitz invariance of this capacity. Furthermore we show that for any Borel set $E\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ with finite length the $L^2(\mathcal{H}^1 \lfloor E)$-boundedness of the singular integral associated to $K_{1,n}$ implies the rectifiability of the set $E$. We thus extend to any ambient dimension, results previously known only in the plane.

Square functions and uniform rectifiability

In this paper it is shown that an Ahlfors-David $n$-dimensional measure $μ$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$ is uniformly $n$-rectifiable if and only if for any ball $B(x_0,R)$ centered at $\operatorname{supp}(μ)$, $$ \int_0^R \int_{x\in B(x_0,R)} \left|\frac{μ(B(x,r))}{r^n} - \frac{μ(B(x,2r))}{(2r)^n} \right|^2\,dμ(x)\,\frac{dr}r \leq c\, R^n.$$ Other characterizations of uniform $n$-rectifiability in terms of smoother square functions are also obtained.

Homogeneous kernerls and self similar sets

We consider singular integrals associated to homogeneous kernels on self similar sets. Using ideas from ergodic theory we prove, among other things, that in Euclidean spaces the principal values of singular integrals associated to real analytic, homogeneous kernels fail to exist a.e. on self similar sets satisfying some separation conditions. Furthermore in general metric groups, using similar techniques, we generalize a criterion of $L^2$-unboundedness for singular integrals on self similar sets.

Removable sets for homogeneous linear PDE in Carnot groups

Let $\cL$ be a homogeneous left invariant differential operator on a Carnot group. Assume that both $\cL$ and $\cL^t$ are hypoelliptic. We study the removable sets for $\cL$-solutions. We give precise conditions in terms of the Carnot--Carathéodory Hausdorff dimension for the removability for $\cL$-solutions under several auxiliary integrability or regularity hypotheses. In some cases, our criteria are sharp on the level of the relevant Hausdorff measure. One of the main ingredients in our proof is the use of novel local self similar tilings in Carnot groups.

Strong and weak type estimates for singular integrals with respect to measures separated by AD-regular boundaries

We prove weak and strong boundedness estimates for singular integrals in $\R^d$ with respect to $(d-1)$-dimensional measures separated by Ahlfors-David regular boundaries, generalizing and extending results of Chousionis and Mattila. Our proof follows a different strategy based on new Calderón-Zygmund decompositions which can be also used to extend a result of David.

Calderón-Zygmund kernels and rectifiability in the plane

Let $E \subset \C$ be a Borel set with finite length, that is, $0<\mathcal{H}^1 (E)<\infty$. By a theorem of David and Léger, the $L^2 (\mathcal{H}^1 \lfloor E)$-boundedness of the singular integral associated to the Cauchy kernel (or even to one of its coordinate parts $x / |z|^2,y / |z|^2,z=(x,y) \in \C$) implies that $E$ is rectifiable. We extend this result to any kernel of the form $x^{2n-1} /|z|^{2n}, z=(x,y) \in \C,n \in \mathbb{N}$. We thus provide the first non-trivial examples of operators not directly related with the Cauchy transform whose $L^2$-boundedness implies rectifiability.

Singular integrals on Ahlfors-David regular subsets of the Heisenberg group

We investigate certain singular integral operators with Riesz-type kernels on s-dimensional Ahlfors-David regular subsets of Heisenberg groups. We show that $L^2$-boundedness, and even a little less, implies that $s$ must be an integer and the set can be approximated at some arbitrary small scales by homogeneous subgroups. It follows that the operators cannot be bounded on many self similar fractal subsets of Heisenberg groups.

Singular integrals on self-similar sets and removability for Lipschitz harmonic functions in Heisenberg groups

In this paper we study singular integrals on small (that is, measure zero and lower than full dimensional) subsets of metric groups. The main examples of the groups we have in mind are Euclidean spaces and Heisenberg groups. In addition to obtaining results in a very general setting, the purpose of this work is twofold; we shall extend some results in Euclidean spaces to more general kernels than previously considered, and we shall obtain in Heisenberg groups some applications to harmonic (in the Heisenberg sense) functions of some results known earlier in Euclidean spaces.

Boundedness and convergence for singular integrals of measures separated by Lipschitz graphs

We shall consider the truncated singular integral operators T_{μ, K}^εf(x)=\int_{\mathbb{R}^{n}\setminus B(x,ε)}K(x-y)f(y)dμy and related maximal operators $T_{μ,K}^{\ast}f(x)=\underset{ε>0}{\sup}| T_{μ,K}^εf(x)|$. We shall prove for a large class of kernels $K$ and measures $μ$ and $ν$ that if $μ$ and $ν$ are separated by a Lipschitz graph, then $T_{ν,K}^{\ast}:L^p(ν)\to L^p(μ)$ is bounded for $1<p<\infty$. We shall also show that the truncated operators $T_{μ, K}^ε$ converge weakly in some dense subspaces of $L^2(μ)$ under mild assumptions for the measures and the kernels.
