Augmentations, reduced ideal point gluings and compact type degenerations of curves

In this note we demonstrate some unexpected properties that simple gluings of the simplest derived categories may have. We consider two special cases: the first is an augmented curve, i.e., the gluing of the derived categories of a point and a curve with the gluing bimodule given by the structure sheaf of the curve; the second is an ideal point gluing of curves, i.e., the gluing of the derived categories of two curves with the gluing bimodule given by the ideal sheaf of a point in the product of the curves. We construct unexpected exceptional objects contained in these categories and discuss their orthogonal complements. We also show that the simplest example of compact type degeneration of curves, a flat family of curves with a smooth general fiber and a 1-nodal reducible central fiber, gives rise to a smooth and proper family of triangulated categories with the general fiber an augmented curve and the central fiber the orthogonal complement of the exotic exceptional object in the ideal point gluing of curves, called the reduced ideal point gluing of curves.

On accumulation points of volumes of log surfaces

Let $\mathcal C\subset(0,1]$ be a set satisfying the descending chain condition. We show that any accumulation point of volumes of log canonical surfaces $(X, B)$ with coefficients in $\mathcal C$ can be realized as the volume of a log canonical surface with big and nef $K_X+B$ and coefficients in $\overline{\mathcal C}\cup\{1\}$, with at least one coefficient in $Acc(\mathcal C)\cup\{1\}$. As a corollary, if $\overline{\mathcal C}\subset\mathbb Q$ then all accumulation points of volumes are rational numbers, solving a conjecture of Blache. For the set of standard coefficients $\mathcal C_2=\{1-\frac{1}{n}\mid n\in\mathbb N\}\cup\{1\}$ we prove that the minimal accumulation point is between $\frac1{7^2\cdot 42^2}$ and $\frac1{42^2}$.

Extended Torelli map to the Igusa blowup in genus 6, 7, and 8

It was conjectured in \cite{Namikawa_ExtendedTorelli} that the Torelli map $M_g\to A_g$ associating to a curve its jacobian extends to a regular map from the Deligne-Mumford moduli space of stable curves $\bar{M}_g$ to the (normalization of the) Igusa blowup $\bar{A}_g^{\rm cent}$. A counterexample in genus $g=9$ was found in \cite{AlexeevBrunyate}. Here, we prove that the extended map is regular for all $g\le8$, thus completely solving the problem in every genus.

Extending Torelli map to toroidal compactifications of Siegel space

It has been known since the 1970s that the Torelli map $M_g \to A_g$, associating to a smooth curve its jacobian, extends to a regular map from the Deligne-Mumford compactification $\bar{M}_g$ to the 2nd Voronoi compactification $\bar{A}_g^{vor}$. We prove that the extended Torelli map to the perfect cone (1st Voronoi) compactification $\bar{A}_g^{perf}$ is also regular, and moreover $\bar{A}_g^{vor}$ and $\bar{A}_g^{perf}$ share a common Zariski open neighborhood of the image of $\bar{M}_g$. We also show that the map to the Igusa monoidal transform (central cone compactification) is NOT regular for $g\ge9$; this disproves a 1973 conjecture of Namikawa.

Nef divisors on $\bar{M}_{0,n}$ from GIT

We introduce and study the GIT CONE of $\bar{M}_{0,n}$, which is generated by the pullbacks of the natural ample line bundles on the GIT quotients $(\mathbb P^1)^n//SL(2)$. We give an explicit formula for these line bundles and prove a number of basic results about the GIT cone. As one application, we prove unconditionally that the log canonical models of $\bar{M}_{0,n}$ with a symmetric boundary divisor coincide with the moduli spaces of weighted curves or with the symmetric GIT quotient, extending the result of Matt Simpson arXiv:0709.4037. (Cf. also a different proof by Fedorchuk and Smyth arXiv:0810.1677)

Complete moduli spaces of branchvarieties

The space of subvarieties of P^n with a fixed Hilbert polynomial is not complete. Grothendieck defined a completion by relaxing "variety" to "scheme", giving the complete_Hilbert scheme_ of subschemes of P^n with fixed Hilbert polynomial. We instead relax "sub" to "branch", where a_branchvariety of_ P^n is defined to be a_reduced_ (though possibly reducible) scheme_with a finite morphism to_ P^n. Our main theorems are that the moduli stack of branchvarieties of P^n with fixed Hilbert polynomial and total degrees of i-dimensional components is a proper (complete and separated) Artin stack with finite stabilizer, and has a coarse moduli space which is a proper algebraic space. Families of branchvarieties have many more locally constant invariants than families of subschemes; for example, the number of connected components is a new invariant. In characteristic 0, one can extend this count to associate a Z-labeled rooted forest to any branchvariety.

Two Two-dimensional Terminations

Varieties with log terminal and log canonical singularities are considered in the Minimal Model Program, see \cite{...} for introduction. In \cite{shokurov:hyp} it was conjectured that many of the interesting sets, associated with these varieties have something in common: they satisfy the ascending chain condition, which means that every increasing chain of elements terminates. Philosophically, this is the reason why two main hypotheses in the Minimal Model Program: existence and termination of flips should be true and are possible to prove. In this paper we prove that the following two sets satisfy the ascending chain condition: 1. The set of minimal log discrepancies for $K_X+B$ where $X$ is a surface with log canonical singularities. 2. The set of groups $(b_1,...b_s)$ such that there is a surface $X$ with log canonical and numerically trivial $K_X+\sum b_jB_j$. The order on such groups is defined in a natural way.
