Dynamics of ferromagnetic domain walls under extreme fields

We report the existence of a new regime for domain wall motion in uniaxial and near-uniaxial ferromagnetic nanowires, characterised by applied magnetic fields sufficiently strong that one of the domains becomes unstable. There appears a new stable solution of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, describing a nonplanar domain wall moving with constant velocity and precessing with constant frequency. Even in the presence of thermal noise, the new solution can propagate for distances on the order of 500 times the field-free domain wall width before fluctuations in the unstable domain become appreciable.

Landau-de Gennes corrections to the Oseen-Frank theory of nematic liquid crystals

We study the asymptotic behavior of the minimisers of the Landau-de Gennes model for nematic liquid crystals in a two-dimensional domain in the regime of small elastic constant. At leading order in the elasticity constant, the minimum-energy configurations can be described by the simpler Oseen-Frank theory. Using a refined notion of $Γ$-development we recover Landau-de Gennes corrections to the Oseen-Frank energy. We provide an explicit characterisation of minimizing $Q$-tensors at this order in terms of optimal Oseen-Frank directors and observe the emerging biaxiality. We apply our results to distinguish between optimal configurations in the class of conformal director fields of fixed topological degree saturating the lower bound for the Oseen-Frank energy.

Symmetry and multiplicity of solutions in a two-dimensional Landau-de Gennes model for liquid crystals

We consider a variational two-dimensional Landau-de Gennes model in the theory of nematic liquid crystals in a disk of radius $R$. We prove that under a symmetric boundary condition carrying a topological defect of degree $\frac{k}{2}$ for some given {\bf even} non-zero integer $k$, there are exactly two minimizers for all large enough $R$. We show that the minimizers do not inherit the full symmetry structure of the energy functional and the boundary data. We further show that there are at least five symmetric critical points.

Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya domain walls in magnetic nanotubes

We present an analytic study of domain-wall statics and dynamics in ferromagnetic nanotubes with spin-orbit-induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Even at the level of statics, dramatic effects arise from the interplay of space curvature and DMI: the domains become chirally twisted leading to more compact domain walls. The dynamics of these chiral structures exhibits several interesting features. Under weak applied currents, they propagate without distortion. The dynamical response is further enriched by the application of an external magnetic field: the domain wall velocity becomes chirality-dependent and can be significantly increased by varying the DMI. These characteristics allow for enhanced control of domain wall motion in nanotubes with DMI, increasing their potential as information carriers in future logic and storage devices.

Liquid crystal defects in the Landau-de Gennes theory in two dimensions-beyond the one-constant approximation

We consider the two-dimensional Landau-de Gennes energy with several elastic constants, subject to general $k$-radially symmetric boundary conditions. We show that for generic elastic constants the critical points consistent with the symmetry of the boundary conditions exist only in the case $k=2$. In this case we identify three types of radial profiles: with two, three of full five components and numerically investigate their minimality and stability depending on suitable parameters. We also numerically study the stability properties of the critical points of the Landau-de Gennes energy and capture the intricate dependence of various qualitative features of these solutions on the elastic constants and the physical regimes of the liquid crystal system.

Stability of point defects of degree $\pm \frac 1 2$ in a two-dimensional nematic liquid crystal model

We study $k$-radially symmetric solutions corresponding to topological defects of charge $\frac{k}{2}$ for integer $k \neq 0$ in the Landau-de Gennes model describing liquid crystals in two-dimensional domains. We show that the solutions whose radial profiles satisfy a natural sign invariance are stable when $|k| = 1$ (unlike the case $|k|>1$ which we treated before). The proof crucially uses the monotonicity of the suitable components, obtained by making use of the cooperative character of the system. A uniqueness result for the radial profiles is also established.

Instability of point defects in a two-dimensional nematic liquid crystal model

We study a class of symmetric critical points in a variational $2D$ Landau - de Gennes model where the state of nematic liquid crystals is described by symmetric traceless $3\times 3$ matrices. These critical points play the role of topological point defects carrying a degree $\frac k 2$ for a nonzero integer $k$. We prove existence and study the qualitative behavior of these symmetric solutions. Our main result is the instability of critical points when $k\neq \pm 1, 0$.

Diffusive transport in two-dimensional nematics

We discuss a dynamical theory for nematic liquid crystals describing the stage of evolution in which the hydrodynamic fluid motion has already equilibrated and the subsequent evolution proceeds via diffusive motion of the orientational degrees of freedom. This diffusion induces a slow motion of singularities of the order parameter field. Using asymptotic methods for gradient flows, we establish a relation between the Doi-Smoluchowski kinetic equation and vortex dynamics in two-dimensional systems. We also discuss moment closures for the kinetic equation and Landau-de Gennes-type free energy dissipation.

Stability of the melting hedgehog in the Landau-de Gennes theory of nematic liquid crystals

We investigate stability properties of the radially symmetric solution corresponding to the vortex defect (so called "melting hedgehog") in the framework of the Landau - de Gennes model of nematic liquid crystals. We prove local stability of the melting hedgehog under arbitrary $Q$-tensor valued perturbations in the temperature regime near the critical supercooling temperature. As a consequence of our method, we also rediscover the loss of stability of the vortex defect in the deep nematic regime.

Uniqueness results for an ODE related to a generalized Ginzburg-Landau model for liquid crystals

We study a singular nonlinear ordinary differential equation on intervals $[0,R)$ with $R\le +\infty$, motivated by the Ginzburg-Landau models in superconductivity and Landau-de Gennes models in liquid crystals. We prove existence and uniqueness of positive solutions under general assumptions on the nonlinearity. Further uniqueness results for sign-changing solutions are obtained for a physically relevant class of nonlinearities. Moreover, we prove a number of fine qualitative properties of the solution that are important for the study of energetic stability.

Domain wall motion in ferromagnetic nanotubes: Analytic results

Dynamics of magnetization domain walls (DWs) in thin ferromagnetic nanotubes subject to longitudinal external fields is addressed analytically in the regimes of strong and weak penalization. Explicit functional forms of the DW profiles and formulas for the DW propagation velocity are derived in both regimes. In particular, the DW speed is shown to depend nonlinearly on the nanotube radius.

Domain wall motion in magnetic nanowires: An asymptotic approach

We develop a systematic asymptotic description for domain wall motion in one-dimensional magnetic nanowires under the influence of small applied magnetic fields and currents and small material anisotropy. The magnetization dynamics, as governed by the Landau--Lifshitz--Gilbert equation, is investigated via a perturbation expansion. We compute leading-order behaviour, propagation velocities, and first-order corrections of both travelling waves and oscillatory solutions, and find bifurcations between these two types of solutions. This treatment provides a sound mathematical foundation for numerous results in the literature obtained through more ad hoc arguments.

Fast domain wall propagation in uniaxial nanowires with transverse fields

Under a magnetic field along its axis, domain wall motion in a uniaxial nanowire is much slower than in the fully anisotropic case, typically by several orders of magnitude (the square of the dimensionless Gilbert damping parameter). However, with the addition of a magnetic field transverse to the wire, this behaviour is dramatically reversed; up to a critical field strength, analogous to the Walker breakdown field, domain walls in a uniaxial wire propagate faster than in a fully anisotropic wire (without transverse field). Beyond this critical field strength, precessional motion sets in, and the mean velocity decreases. Our results are based on leading-order analytic calculations of the velocity and critical field as well as numerical solutions of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation.

Geometrically induced phase transitions in two-dimensional dumbbell-shaped domains

We continue the analysis, started in Morini&Slastikov (2012), of a two-dimensional non-convex variational problem, motivated by studies on magnetic domain walls trapped by thin necks. The main focus is on the impact of extreme geometry on the structure of local minimizers representing the transition between two different constant phases. We address here the case of general non-symmetric dumbbell-shaped domains with a small constriction and general multi-well potentials. Our main results concern the existence and uniqueness of non-constant local minimizers, their full classification in the case of convex bulks, and the complete description of their asymptotic behavior, as the size of the constriction tends to zero.

Domain wall motion in ferromagnetic nanowires driven by arbitrary time-dependent fields: An exact result

We address the dynamics of magnetic domain walls in ferromagnetic nanowires under the influence of external time-dependent magnetic fields. We report a new exact spatiotemporal solution of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation for the case of soft ferromagnetic wires and nanostructures with uniaxial anisotropy. The solution holds for applied fields with arbitrary strength and time dependence. We further extend this solution to applied fields slowly varying in space and to multiple domain walls.
