On the motion of a nearly incompressible viscous fluid containing a small rigid body

We consider the motion of a compressible viscous fluid containing a moving rigid body confined to a planar domain $Ω\subset R^2$. The main result states that the influence of the body on the fluid is negligible if (i) the diameter of the body is small and (ii) the fluid is nearly incompressible (the low Mach number regime). The specific shape of the body as well as the boundary conditions on the fluid--body interface are irrelevant and collisions with the boundary $\partial Ω$ are allowed. The rigid body motion may be enforced externally or governed solely by its interaction with the fluid.

On the motion of a small rigid body in a viscous compressible fluid

We consider the motion of a small rigid object immersed in a viscous compressible fluid in the 3-dimensional Eucleidean space. Assuming the object is a ball of a small radius $\varepsilon$ we show that the behavior of the fluid is not influenced by the object in the asymptotic limit $\varepsilon \to 0$. The result holds for the isentropic pressure law $p(\varrho) = a \varrho^γ$ for any $γ> \frac{3}{2}$ under mild assumptions concerning the rigid body density. In particular, the latter may be bounded as soon as $γ> 3$. The proof uses a new method of construction of the test functions in the weak formulation of the problem, and, in particular, a new form of the so-called Bogovskii operator.

Uniform profile near the point defect of Landau-de Gennes model

For the Landau-de Gennes functional on 3D domains, \begin{equation*} I_{\varepsilon}(Q,Ω):=\int_Ω\left\{\frac{1}{2}|\nabla Q|^2+\frac{1}{\varepsilon^2}\left( -\frac{a^2}{2}\mathrm{tr}(Q^2)-\frac{b^2}{3}\mathrm{tr}(Q^3)+\frac{c^2}{4}[\mathrm{tr}(Q^2)]^2 \right) \right\}\,dx, \end{equation*} it is well-known that under suitable boundary conditions, the global minimizer $Q_\varepsilon$ converges strongly in $H^1(Ω)$ to a uniaxial minimizer $Q_*=s_+(n_*\otimes n_*-\frac{1}{3}\mathrm{Id})$ up to some subsequence $\varepsilon_n\rightarrow\infty$ , where $n_*\in H^1(Ω,\mathbb{S}^2)$ is a minimizing harmonic map. In this paper we further investigate the structure of $Q_{\varepsilon}$ near the core of a point defect $x_0$ which is a singular point of the map $n_*$. The main strategy is to study the blow-up profile of $Q_{\varepsilon_n}(x_n+\varepsilon_n y)$ where $\{x_n\}$ are carefully chosen and converge to $x_0$. We prove that $Q_{\varepsilon_n}(x_n+\varepsilon_n y)$ converges in $C^2_{loc}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ to a tangent map $Q(x)$ which at infinity behaves like a "hedgehog" solution that coincides with the asymptotic profile of $n_*$ near $x_0$. Moreover, such convergence result implies that the minimizer $Q_{\varepsilon_n}$ can be well approximated by the Oseen-Frank minimizer $n_*$ outside the $O(\varepsilon_n)$ neighborhood of the point defect.

A scaling limit from the wave map to the heat flow into $\mathbb{S}^2$

In this paper we study a limit connecting a scaled wave map with the heat flow into the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$. We show quantitatively how that the two equations are connected by means of an initial layer correction. This limit is motivated as a first step into understanding the limit of zero inertia for the hyperbolic-parabolic Ericksen-Leslie's liquid crystal model.

An optimal scaling to computationally tractable dimensionless models: Study of latex particles morphology formation

In modelling of chemical, physical or biological systems it may occur that the coefficients, multiplying various terms in the equation of interest, differ greatly in magnitude, if a particular system of units is used. Such is, for instance, the case of the Population Balance Equations (PBE) proposed to model the Latex Particles Morphology formation. The obvious way out of this difficulty is the use of dimensionless scaled quantities, although often the scaling procedure is not unique. In this paper, we introduce a conceptually new general approach, called Optimal Scaling (OS). The method is tested on the known examples from classical and quantum mechanics, and applied to the Latex Particles Morphology model, where it allows us to reduce the variation of the relevant coefficients from 49 to just 4 orders of magnitudes. The PBE are then solved by a novel Generalised Method Of Characteristics, and the OS is shown to help reduce numerical error, and avoid unphysical behaviour of the solution. Although inspired by a particular application, the proposed scaling algorithm is expected find application in a wide range of chemical, physical and biological problems.

Landau-de Gennes corrections to the Oseen-Frank theory of nematic liquid crystals

We study the asymptotic behavior of the minimisers of the Landau-de Gennes model for nematic liquid crystals in a two-dimensional domain in the regime of small elastic constant. At leading order in the elasticity constant, the minimum-energy configurations can be described by the simpler Oseen-Frank theory. Using a refined notion of $Γ$-development we recover Landau-de Gennes corrections to the Oseen-Frank energy. We provide an explicit characterisation of minimizing $Q$-tensors at this order in terms of optimal Oseen-Frank directors and observe the emerging biaxiality. We apply our results to distinguish between optimal configurations in the class of conformal director fields of fixed topological degree saturating the lower bound for the Oseen-Frank energy.

Symmetry and multiplicity of solutions in a two-dimensional Landau-de Gennes model for liquid crystals

We consider a variational two-dimensional Landau-de Gennes model in the theory of nematic liquid crystals in a disk of radius $R$. We prove that under a symmetric boundary condition carrying a topological defect of degree $\frac{k}{2}$ for some given {\bf even} non-zero integer $k$, there are exactly two minimizers for all large enough $R$. We show that the minimizers do not inherit the full symmetry structure of the energy functional and the boundary data. We further show that there are at least five symmetric critical points.

Liquid crystal defects in the Landau-de Gennes theory in two dimensions-beyond the one-constant approximation

We consider the two-dimensional Landau-de Gennes energy with several elastic constants, subject to general $k$-radially symmetric boundary conditions. We show that for generic elastic constants the critical points consistent with the symmetry of the boundary conditions exist only in the case $k=2$. In this case we identify three types of radial profiles: with two, three of full five components and numerically investigate their minimality and stability depending on suitable parameters. We also numerically study the stability properties of the critical points of the Landau-de Gennes energy and capture the intricate dependence of various qualitative features of these solutions on the elastic constants and the physical regimes of the liquid crystal system.

Stability of point defects of degree $\pm \frac 1 2$ in a two-dimensional nematic liquid crystal model

We study $k$-radially symmetric solutions corresponding to topological defects of charge $\frac{k}{2}$ for integer $k \neq 0$ in the Landau-de Gennes model describing liquid crystals in two-dimensional domains. We show that the solutions whose radial profiles satisfy a natural sign invariance are stable when $|k| = 1$ (unlike the case $|k|>1$ which we treated before). The proof crucially uses the monotonicity of the suitable components, obtained by making use of the cooperative character of the system. A uniqueness result for the radial profiles is also established.

Uniqueness of Weak Solutions of the Full Coupled Navier-Stokes and Q-Tensor System in 2D

This paper is devoted to the full system of incompressible liquid crystals, as modeled in the Q-tensor framework. The main purpose is to establish the uniqueness of weak solutions in a two dimensional setting, without imposing an extra regularity on the solutions themselves. This result only requires the initial data to fulfill the features which allow the existence of a weak solution. Thus, we also present a revisit of the global existence result in dimension two and three.

Dynamic Cubic Instability in a 2D Q-tensor Model for Liquid Crystals

We consider a four-elastic-constant Landau-de Gennes energy characterizing nematic liquid crystal configurations described using the $Q$-tensor formalism. The energy contains a cubic term and is unbounded from below. We study dynamical effects produced by the presence of this cubic term by considering an $L^2$ gradient flow generated by this energy. We work in two dimensions and concentrate on understanding the relations between the physicality of the initial data and the global well-posedness of the system.

Instability of point defects in a two-dimensional nematic liquid crystal model

We study a class of symmetric critical points in a variational $2D$ Landau - de Gennes model where the state of nematic liquid crystals is described by symmetric traceless $3\times 3$ matrices. These critical points play the role of topological point defects carrying a degree $\frac k 2$ for a nonzero integer $k$. We prove existence and study the qualitative behavior of these symmetric solutions. Our main result is the instability of critical points when $k\neq \pm 1, 0$.

Stability of the melting hedgehog in the Landau-de Gennes theory of nematic liquid crystals

We investigate stability properties of the radially symmetric solution corresponding to the vortex defect (so called "melting hedgehog") in the framework of the Landau - de Gennes model of nematic liquid crystals. We prove local stability of the melting hedgehog under arbitrary $Q$-tensor valued perturbations in the temperature regime near the critical supercooling temperature. As a consequence of our method, we also rediscover the loss of stability of the vortex defect in the deep nematic regime.

Uniqueness results for an ODE related to a generalized Ginzburg-Landau model for liquid crystals

We study a singular nonlinear ordinary differential equation on intervals $[0,R)$ with $R\le +\infty$, motivated by the Ginzburg-Landau models in superconductivity and Landau-de Gennes models in liquid crystals. We prove existence and uniqueness of positive solutions under general assumptions on the nonlinearity. Further uniqueness results for sign-changing solutions are obtained for a physically relevant class of nonlinearities. Moreover, we prove a number of fine qualitative properties of the solution that are important for the study of energetic stability.

Dynamic Statistical Scaling in the Landau-de Gennes Theory of Nematic Liquid Crystals

We investigate the asymptotic behaviour of a correlation function associated with a nematic liquid crystal system undergoing an isotropic-nematic phase transition following an instantaneous change of temperature. Within the setting of Landau-de Gennes theory, we confirm a hypothesis in the condensed matter physics literature on the average self-similar behaviour of the correlation function in the asymptotic regime at time infinity. In the final sections, we comment on other possible scaling behaviour of the correlation function.

Nonisothermal nematic liquid crystal flows with the Ball-Majumdar free energy

In this paper we prove the existence of global in time weak solutions for an evolutionary PDE system modelling nonisothermal Landau-de Gennes nematic liquid crystal (LC) flows in three dimensions of space. In our model, the incompressible Navier-Stokes system for the macroscopic velocity $\vu$ is coupled to a nonlinear convective parabolic equation describing the evolution of the Q-tensor $\QQ$, namely a tensor-valued variable representing the normalized second order moments of the probability distribution function of the LC molecules. The effects of the (absolute) temperature $\vt$ are prescribed in the form of an energy balance identity complemented with a global entropy production inequality. Compared to previous contributions, we can consider here the physically realistic singular configuration potential $f$ introduced by Ball and Majumdar. This potential gives rise to severe mathematical difficulties since it introduces, in the Q-tensor equation, a term which is at the same time singular in $\QQ$ and degenerate in $\vt$. To treat it a careful analysis of the properties of $f$, particularly of its blow-up rate, is carried out.

Coercivity and stability results for an extended Navier-Stokes system

In this article we study a system of equations that is known to {\em extend} Navier-Stokes dynamics in a well-posed manner to velocity fields that are not necessarily divergence-free. Our aim is to contribute to an understanding of the role of divergence and pressure in developing energy estimates capable of controlling the nonlinear terms. We address questions of global existence and stability in bounded domains with no-slip boundary conditions. Even in two space dimensions, global existence is open in general, and remains so, primarily due to the lack of a self-contained $L^2$ energy estimate. However, through use of new $H^1$ coercivity estimates for the linear equations, we establish a number of global existence and stability results, including results for small divergence and a time-discrete scheme. We also prove global existence in 2D for any initial data, provided sufficient divergence damping is included.

Evolution of non-isothermal Landau-de Gennes nematic liquid crystals flows with singular potential

We discuss a 3D model describing the time evolution of nematic liquid crystals in the framework of Landau-de Gennes theory, where the natural physical constraints are enforced by a singular free energy bulk potential proposed by J.M. Ball and A. Majumdar. The thermal effects are present through the component of the free energy that accounts for intermolecular interactions. The model is consistent with the general principle of thermodynamics and mathematically tractable. We identify the a priori estimates for the associated system of evolutionary partial differential equations and construct global-in-time weak solutions for arbitrary physically relevant initial data.

Energy Dissipation and Regularity for a Coupled Navier-Stokes and Q-Tensor System

We study a complex non-newtonian fluid that models the flow of nematic liquid crystals. The fluid is described by a system that couples a forced Navier-Stokes system with a parabolic-type system. We prove the existence of global weak solutions in dimensions two and three. We show the existence of a Lyapunov functional for the smooth solutions of the coupled system and use the cancellations that allow its existence to prove higher global regularity, in dimension two. We also show the weak-strong uniqueness in dimension two.

Global existence and regularity for the full coupled Navier-Stokes and Q-tensor system

We study the global existence and regularity of solutions for a system describing the evolution of a nematic liquid crystal fluid. The fluid is described by a system that couples a forced Navier-Stokes system with a parabolic-type system. In our previous work, \cite{pz1}, we assumed that a certain parameter, $ξ$, is zero, which had the effect of cancelling certain terms. In the current work we do not make this assumption and study the full system, observing that the presence of these additional terms has a non-trivial effect, namely the quadruply exponential increase of the high norms. We also estimate differently certain terms already existent in the simplified system and improve the estimates in \cite{pz1}. We prove the existence of global weak solutions in dimensions two and three. In dimension two we prove the higher regularity of solutions and show that the high norms increase in time at most quadruply exponential. We also show the weak-strong uniqueness in dimension two.

Orientability and energy minimization in liquid crystal models

Uniaxial nematic liquid crystals are modelled in the Oseen-Frank theory through a unit vector field $n$. This theory has the apparent drawback that it does not respect the head-to-tail symmetry in which $n$ should be equivalent to -$n$. This symmetry is preserved in the constrained Landau-de Gennes theory that works with the tensor $Q=s\big(n\otimes n- \frac{1}{3} Id\big)$.We study the differences and the overlaps between the two theories. These depend on the regularity class used as well as on the topology of the underlying domain. We show that for simply-connected domains and in the natural energy class $W^{1,2}$ the two theories coincide, but otherwise there can be differences between the two theories, which we identify. In the case of planar domains we completely characterise the instances in which the predictions of the constrained Landau-de Gennes theory differ from those of the Oseen-Frank theory.

Refined approximation for a class of Landau-de Gennes energy minimizers

We study a class of Landau-de Gennes energy functionals in the asymptotic regime of small elastic constant $L>0$. We revisit and sharpen the results in [18] on the convergence to the limit Oseen-Frank functional. We examine how the Landau-de Gennes global minimizers are approximated by the Oseen-Frank ones by determining the first order term in their asymptotic expansion as $L\to 0$. We identify the appropriate functional setting in which the asymptotic expansion holds, the sharp rate of convergence to the limit and determine the equation for the first order term. We find that the equation has a ``normal component'' given by an algebraic relation and a ``tangential component'' given by a linear system.

Landau-De Gennes theory of nematic liquid crystals: the Oseen-Frank limit and beyond

We study global minimizers of a continuum Landau-De Gennes energy functional for nematic liquid crystals, in three-dimensional domains, subject to uniaxial boundary conditions. We analyze the physically relevant limit of small elastic constant and show that global minimizers converge strongly, in $W^{1,2}$, to a global minimizer predicted by the Oseen-Frank theory for uniaxial nematic liquid crystals with constant order parameter. Moreover, the convergence is uniform in the interior of the domain, away from the singularities of the limiting Oseen-Frank global minimizer. We obtain results on the rate of convergence of the eigenvalues and the regularity of the eigenvectors of the Landau-De Gennes global minimizer. We also study the interplay between biaxiality and uniaxiality in Landau-De Gennes global energy minimizers and obtain estimates for various related quantities such as the biaxiality parameter and the size of admissible strongly biaxial regions.
