Restricted volumes on Kähler manifolds

We study numerical restricted volumes of (1,1) classes on compact Kahler manifolds, as introduced by Boucksom. Inspired by work of Ein-Lazarsfeld-Mustata-Nakamaye-Popa on restricted volumes of line bundles on projective manifolds, we pose a natural conjecture to the effect that irreducible components of the non-Kahler locus of a big class should have vanishing numerical restricted volume. We prove this conjecture when the class has a Zariski decomposition, and give several applications.

Collapsing hyperkähler manifolds

Given a projective hyperkahler manifold with a holomorphic Lagrangian fibration, we prove that hyperkahler metrics with volume of the torus fibers shrinking to zero collapse in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense (and smoothly away from the singular fibers) to a compact metric space which is a half-dimensional special Kahler manifold outside a singular set of real Hausdorff codimension 2 and is homeomorphic to the base projective space.

Infinite time singularities of the Kähler-Ricci flow

We study the long-time behavior of the Kahler-Ricci flow on compact Kahler manifolds. We give an almost complete classification of the singularity type of the flow at infinity, depending only on the underlying complex structure. If the manifold is of intermediate Kodaira dimension and has semiample canonical bundle, so that it is fibered by Calabi-Yau varieties, we show that parabolic rescalings around any point on a smooth fiber converge smoothly to a unique limit, which is the product of a Ricci-flat metric on the fiber and of a flat metric on Euclidean space. An analogous result holds for collapsing limits of Ricci-flat Kahler metrics.

Families of Calabi-Yau manifolds and canonical singularities

Given a polarized family of varieties over the unit disc, smooth except over the origin and with smooth fibers Calabi-Yau, we show that the origin lies at finite Weil-Petersson distance if and only if after a finite base change the family is birational to one with central fiber a Calabi-Yau variety with at worst canonical singularities, answering a question of C.-L. Wang. This condition also implies that the Ricci-flat Kahler metrics in the polarization class on the smooth fibers have uniformly bounded diameter, or are uniformly volume non-collapsed.

Kähler currents and null loci

We prove that the non-Kahler locus of a nef and big class on a compact complex manifold bimeromorphic to a Kahler manifold equals its null locus. In particular this gives an analytic proof of a theorem of Nakamaye and Ein-Lazarsfeld-Mustata-Nakamaye-Popa. As an application, we show that finite time non-collapsing singularities of the Kahler-Ricci flow on compact Kahler manifolds always form along analytic subvarieties, thus answering a question of Feldman-Ilmanen-Knopf and Campana. We also extend the second author's results about noncollapsing degenerations of Ricci-flat Kahler metrics on Calabi-Yau manifolds to the nonalgebraic case.

Non-Kähler Calabi-Yau manifolds

We study the class of compact complex manifolds whose first Chern class vanishes in the Bott-Chern cohomology. This class includes all manifolds with torsion canonical bundle, but it is strictly larger. After making some elementary remarks, we show that a manifold in Fujiki's class C with vanishing first Bott-Chern class has torsion canonical bundle. We also give some examples of non-Kahler Calabi-Yau manifolds, and discuss the problem of defining and constructing canonical metrics on them.

$C^{2,α}$ estimates for nonlinear elliptic equations in complex and almost complex geometry

We describe how to use the perturbation theory of Caffarelli to prove Evans-Krylov type $C^{2,α}$ estimates for solutions of nonlinear elliptic equations in complex geometry, assuming a bound on the Laplacian of the solution. Our results can be used to replace the various Evans-Krylov type arguments in the complex geometry literature with a sharper and more unified approach. In addition, our methods extend to almost-complex manifolds, and we use this to obtain a new local estimate for an equation of Donaldson.

Collapsing of the Chern-Ricci flow on elliptic surfaces

We investigate the Chern-Ricci flow, an evolution equation of Hermitian metrics generalizing the Kahler-Ricci flow, on elliptic bundles over a Riemann surface of genus greater than one. We show that, starting at any Gauduchon metric, the flow collapses the elliptic fibers and the metrics converge to the pullback of a Kahler-Einstein metric from the base. Some of our estimates are new even for the Kahler-Ricci flow. A consequence of our result is that, on every minimal non-Kahler surface of Kodaira dimension one, the Chern-Ricci flow converges in the sense of Gromov-Hausdorff to an orbifold Kahler-Einstein metric on a Riemann surface.

Blowup behavior of the Kahler-Ricci flow on Fano manifolds

We study the blowup behavior at infinity of the normalized Kahler-Ricci flow on a Fano manifold which does not admit Kahler-Einstein metrics. We prove an estimate for the Kahler potential away from a multiplier ideal subscheme, which implies that the volume forms along the flow converge to zero locally uniformly away from the same set. Similar results are also proved for Aubin's continuity method.

Gromov-Hausdorff collapsing of Calabi-Yau manifolds

This paper is a sequel to arXiv:1108.0967. We further study Gromov-Hausdorff collapsing limits of Ricci-flat Kähler metrics on abelian fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds. Firstly, we show that in the same setup as arXiv:1108.0967, if the dimension of the base manifold is one, the limit metric space is homeomorphic to the base manifold. Secondly, if the fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds are Lagrangian fibrations of holomorphic symplectic manifolds, the metrics on the regular parts of the limits are special Kähler metrics. By combining these two results, we extend arXiv:math/0008018 to any fibered projective K3 surface without any assumption on the type of singular fibers.

Estimates for the complex Monge-Ampère equation on Hermitian and balanced manifolds

We generalize Yau's estimates for the complex Monge-Ampere equation on compact manifolds in the case when the background metric is no longer Kahler. We prove $C^{\infty}$ a priori estimates for a solution of the complex Monge-Ampere equation when the background metric is Hermitian (in complex dimension two) or balanced (in higher dimensions), giving an alternative proof of a theorem of Cherrier. We relate this to recent results of Guan-Li.

Limits of Calabi-Yau metrics when the Kahler class degenerates

We study the behaviour of families of Ricci-flat Kahler metrics on a projective Calabi-Yau manifold when the Kahler classes degenerate to the boundary of the ample cone. We prove that if the limit class is big and nef the Ricci-flat metrics converge smoothly on compact sets outside a subvariety to a limit incomplete Ricci-flat metric. The limit can also be understood from algebraic geometry.

A general Schwarz Lemma for almost-Hermitian manifolds

We prove a version of Yau's Schwarz Lemma for general almost-complex manifolds equipped with Hermitian metrics. This requires an extension to this setting of the Laplacian comparison theorem. As an application we show that the product of two almost-complex manifolds does not admit any complete Hermitian metric with bisectional curvature bounded between two negative constants that satisfies some additional mild assumptions.
