A rough calculus approach to level sets in the Heisenberg group

We introduce novel equations, in the spirit of rough path theory, that parametrize level sets of intrinsically regular maps on the Heisenberg group with values in $\mathbb{R}^2$. These equations can be seen as a sub-Riemannian counterpart to classical ODEs arising from the implicit function theorem. We show that they enjoy all the natural well-posedness properties, thus allowing for a "good calculus" on nonsmooth level sets. We apply these results to prove an area formula for the intrinsic measure of level sets, along with the corresponding coarea formula.

A low rank property and nonexistence of higher dimensional horizontal Sobolev sets

We establish a "low rank property" for Sobolev mappings that pointwise solve a first order nonlinear system of PDEs, whose smooth solutions have the so-called "contact property". As a consequence, Sobolev mappings from an open set of the plane, taking values in the first Heisenberg group and that have almost everywhere maximal rank must have images with positive 3-dimensional Hausdorff measure with respect to the sub-Riemannian distance of the Heisenberg group. This provides a complete solution to a question raised in a paper by Z. M. Balogh, R. Hoefer-Isenegger and J. T. Tyson. Our approach differs from the previous ones. Its technical aspect consists in performing an "exterior differentiation by blow-up", where the standard distributional exterior differentiation is not possible. This method extends to higher dimensional Sobolev mappings taking values in higher dimensional Heisenberg groups.

BV functions and sets of finite perimeter in sub-Riemannian manifolds

We give a notion of BV function on an oriented manifold where a volume form and a family of lower semicontinuous quadratic forms $G_p: T_pM \to [0,\infty]$ are given. When we consider sub-Riemannian manifolds, our definition coincide with the one given in the more general context of metric measure spaces which are doubling and support a Poincaré inequality. We then focus on finite perimeter sets, i.e., sets whose characteristic function is BV, in sub-Riemannian manifolds. Under an assumption on the nilpotent approximation, we prove a blowup theorem, generalizing the one obtained for step-2 Carnot groups in [24].

On transversal submanifolds and their measure

We study the class of transversal submanifolds. We characterize their blow-ups at transversal points and prove a negligibility theorem for their "generalized characteristic set", with respect to the Carnot-Carathéodory Hausdorff measure. This set is made by all points of non-maximal degree. Observing that C^1 submanifolds in Carnot groups are generically transversal, the previous results prove that the "intrinsic measure" of C^1 submanifolds is generically equivalent to their Carnot-Carathéodory Hausdorff measure. As a result, the restriction of this Hausdorff measure to the submanifold can be replaced by a more manageable integral formula, that should be seen as a "sub-Riemannian mass". Another consequence of these results is an explicit formula, only depending on the embedding of the submanifold, that computes the Carnot-Carathéodory Hausdorff dimension of C^1 transversal submanifolds.
