Curve diffusion and straightening flows on parallel lines

In this paper, we study families of immersed curves $γ:(-1,1)\times[0,T)\rightarrow\mathbb{R}^2$ with free boundary supported on parallel lines $\{η_1, η_2\}:\mathbb{R}\rightarrow\mathbb{R}^2$ evolving by the curve diffusion flow and the curve straightening flow. The evolving curves are orthogonal to the boundary and satisfy a no-flux condition. We give estimates and monotonicity on the normalised oscillation of curvature, yielding global results for the flows.

On the $H^1(ds)$-gradient flow for the length functional

In this article we consider the length functional defined on the space of immersed planar curves. The $L^2(ds)$ Riemannian metric gives rise to the curve shortening flow as the gradient flow of the length functional. Motivated by the triviality of the metric topology in this space, we consider the gradient flow of the length functional with respect to the $H^1(ds)$-metric. Circles with radius $r_0$ shrink with $r(t) = \sqrt{W(e^{c-2t})}$ under the flow, where $W$ is the Lambert $W$ function and $c = r_0^2 + \log r_0^2$. We conduct a thorough study of this flow, giving existence of eternal solutions and convergence for general initial data, preservation of regularity in various spaces, qualitative properties of the flow after an appropriate rescaling, and numerical simulations.

Ancient solutions for flow by powers of the curvature in $\mathbb R^2$

We construct a new compact convex embedded ancient solution of the $κ^α$ flow in $\mathbb R^2$, $α\in(\frac12,1)$ that lies between two parallel lines. Using this solution we classify all convex ancient solutions of the $κ^α$ flow in $\mathbb R^2$, for $α\in(\frac23,1)$. Moreover, we show that any non-compact convex embedded ancient solution of the $κ^α$ flow in $\mathbb R^2$, $α\in(\frac12,1)$ must be a translating solution.

Theory and numerics for Chen's flow of curves

In this article we study Chen's flow of curves from theoreical and numerical perspectives. We investigate two settings: that of closed immersed $ω$-circles, and immersed lines satisfying a cocompactness condition. In each of the settings our goal is to find geometric conditions that allow us to understand the global behaviour of the flow: for the cocompact case, the condition is straightforward and the argument is largely standard. For the closed case however, the argument is quite complex. The flow shrinks every initial curve to a point if it does not become singular beforehand, and we must identify a condition to ensure this behaviour as well as identify the point in order to perform the requisite rescaling. We are able to successfully conduct a full analysis of the rescaling under a curvature condition. The analysis resembles the case of the mean curvature flow more than other fourth-order curvature flow such as the elastic flow or the curve diffusion flow, despite the lack of maximum and comparison principles. Our work is informed by a numerical study of the flow, and we include a section that explains the algorithms used and gives some further simulations.

Mean curvature flow with free boundary in embedded cylinders or cones and uniqueness results for minimal hypersurfaces

In this paper we study the mean curvature flow of embedded disks with free boundary on an embedded cylinder or generalised cone of revolution, called the support hypersurface. We determine regions of the interior of the support hypersurface such that initial data is driven to a curvature singularity in finite time or exists for all time and converges to a minimal disk. We further classify the type of the singularity. We additionally present applications of these results to the uniqueness problem for minimal hypersurfaces with free boundary on such suppport hypersurfaces; the results obtained this way do not require a-priori any symmetry or topological restrictions.

The shrinking figure eight and other solitons for the curve diffusion flow

In this article we investigate the dynamics of special solutions to the surface diffusion flow of idealised ribbons. This equation reduces to studying the curve diffusion flow for the profile curve of the ribbon. We provide: (1) a complete classification of stationary solutions; (2) qualitative results on shrinkers, translators, and rotators; and (3) an explicit parametrisation of a shrinking figure eight curve.

Mean curvature flow with free boundary outside a hypersphere

The purpose of this paper is twofold: firstly, to establish sufficient conditions under which the mean curvature flow supported on a hypersphere with exterior Dirichlet boundary exists globally in time and converges to a minimal surface, and secondly, to illustrate the application of Killing vector fields in the preservation of graphicality for the mean curvature flow with free boundary. To this end we focus on the mean curvature flow of a topological annulus with inner boundary meeting a standard n-sphere in \R^{n+1} perpendicularly and outer boundary fixed to an (n-1)-sphere with radius R>1 at a fixed height h. We call this the \emph{sphere problem}. Our work is set in the context of graphical mean curvature flow with either symmetry or mean concavity/convexity restrictions. For rotationally symmetric initial data we obtain, depending on the exact configuration of the initial graph, either long time existence and convergence to a minimal hypersurface with boundary or the development of a finite-time curvature singularity. With reflectively symmetric initial data we are able to use Killing vector fields to preserve graphicality of the flow and uniformly bound the mean curvature pointwise along the flow. Finally we prove that the mean curvature flow of an initially mean concave/convex graphical surface exists globally in time and converges to a piece of a minimal surface.

Willmore flow of surfaces in Riemannian spaces I: Concentration-compactness

In this paper we study the local regularity of closed surfaces immersed in a Riemannian 3-manifold flowing by Willmore flow. We establish a pair of concentration-compactness alternatives for the flow, giving a lower bound on the maximal time of existence of the flow proportional to the concentration of the curvature and area at initial time. The estimate from the first theorem is purely in terms of the concentration of curvature at initial time but applies only to ambient spaces with non-positive sectional curvature. The second requires additional information on the concentration of area at initial time but applies in more general background spaces. Applications of these results shall appear in forthcoming work.
