Operator-norm Trotter product formula on Banach spaces

In this paper we collect results concerning the {operator-norm} convergent {Trotter} product formula for two semigroups $\{\e^{- t A}\}_{t\geq 0}$, $\{\e^{- t B}\}_{t\geq 0}$, with densely defined generators $A$ and $B$ in a {Banach} space. Although the {strong} convergence in Banach space for contraction semigroups is known since the seminal paper by Trotter (1959), which after more than three decades was extended to convergence in the {operator-norm} topology in {Hilbert} spaces by Rogava (1993), the {operator-norm} convergence in a {Banach} space was established only in (2001).

Convergence rate estimates for Trotter product approximations of solution operators for non-autonomous Cauchy problems

In the present paper we advocate the Howland-Evans approach to solution of the abstract non-autonomous Cauchy problem (non-ACP) in a separable Banach space X. The main idea is to reformulate this problem as an autonomous Cauchy problem (ACP) in a new Banach space L^p(I,X), consisting of X-valued functions on the time-interval I. The fundamental observation is a one-to-one correspondence between solution operators (propagators) for a non-ACP and the corresponding evolution semigroups for ACP in L^p(I,X). We show that the latter also allows to apply a full power of the operator-theoretical methods to scrutinise the non-ACP including the proof of the Trotter product approximation formulae with operator-norm estimate of the rate of convergence. The paper extends and improves some recent results in this direction in particular for Hilbert spaces.

On ergodic states, spontaneous symmetry breaking and the Bogoliubov quasi-averages

It is shown that Bogoliubov quasi-averages select the pure or ergodic states in the ergodic decomposition of the thermal (Gibbs) state. Our examples include quantum spin systems and many-body boson systems. As a consequence, we elucidate the problem of equivalence between Bose-Einstein condensation and the quasi-average spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) discussed for continuous boson systems. The multi-mode extended van den Berg-Lewis-Pulé condensation of type III demonstrates that the only physically reliable quantities are those that defined by Bogoliubov quasi-averages.

Disordered Bose Einstein Condensates with Interaction

We study the effects of random scatterers on the ground state of the one-dimensional Lieb-Liniger model of interacting bosons on the unit interval in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime. We prove that Bose Einstein condensation survives even a strong random potential with a high density of scatterers. The character of the wave function of the condensate, however, depends in an essential way on the interplay between randomness and the strength of the two-body interaction. For low density of scatterers or strong interactions the wave function extends over the whole interval. High density of scatterers and weak interaction, on the other hand, leads to localization of the wave function in a fragmented subset of the interval.

Non-equilibrium states of a photon cavity pumped by an atomic beam

We consider a beam of two-level randomly excited atoms that pass one-by-one through a one-mode cavity. We show that in the case of an ideal cavity, i.e. no leaking of photons from the cavity, the pumping by the beam leads to an unlimited increase in the photon number in the cavity. We derive an expression for the mean photon number for all times. Taking into account leaking of the cavity, we prove that the mean photon number in the cavity stabilizes in time. The limiting state of the cavity in this case exists and it is independent of the initial state. We calculate the characteristic functional of this non-quasi-free non-equilibrium state. We also calculate the energy flux in both the ideal and open cavity and the entropy production for the ideal cavity.

Cayley transform applied to non-interacting quantum transport

We extend the Landauer-Büttiker formalism in order to accommodate both unitary and self-adjoint operators which are not bounded from below. We also prove that the pure point and singular continuous subspaces of the decoupled Hamiltonian do not contribute to the steady current. One of the physical applications is a stationary charge current formula for a system with four pseudo-relativistic semi-infinite leads and with an inner sample which is described by a Schrödinger operator defined on a bounded interval with dissipative boundary conditions. Another application is a current formula for electrons described by a one dimensional Dirac operator; here the system consists of two semi-infinite leads coupled through a point interaction at zero.

Random point field approach to analysis of anisotropic Bose-Einstein condensations

Position distributions of constituent particles of the perfect Bose-gas trapped in exponentially and polynomially anisotropic boxes are investigated by means of the boson random point fields (processes) and by the spatial random distribution of particle density. Our results include the case of \textit{generalised} Bose-Einstein Condensation. For exponentially anisotropic quasi two-dimensional system (SLAB), we obtain \textit{three} qualitatively different particle density distributions. They correspond to the \textit{normal} phase, the quasi-condensate phase (type III generalised condensation) and to the phase when the type III and the type I Bose condensations co-exist. An interesting feature is manifested by the type II generalised condensation in one-directional polynomially anisotropic system (BEAM). In this case the particle density distribution rests truly random even in the \textit{macroscopic} scaling limit.

Quasi-one- and quasi-two-dimensional perfect Bose gas: the second critical density and generalised condensation

In this letter we discuss a relevance of the 3D Perfect Bose gas (PBG) condensation in extremely elongated vessels for the study of anisotropic condensate coherence and the "quasi-condensate". To this end we analyze the case of exponentially anisotropic (van den Berg) boxes, when there are two critical densities $ρ_c < ρ_m$ for a generalised Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC). Here $ρ_c$ is the standard critical density for the PBG. We consider three examples of anisotropic geometry: slabs, squared beams and "cigars" to demonstrate that the "quasi-condensate" which exists in domain $ρ_c < ρ< ρ_m$ is in fact the van den Berg-Lewis-Pulé generalised condensation (vdBLP-GC) of the type III with no macroscopic occupation of any mode. We show that for the slab geometry the second critical density $ρ_m$ is a threshold between quasi- two-dimensional (quasi-2D) condensate and the three dimensional (3D) regime when there is a coexistence of the "quasi-condensate" with the standard one-mode BEC. On the other hand, in the case of squared beams and "cigars" geometries critical density $ρ_m$ separates quasi-1D and 3D regimes. We calculate the value of difference between $ρ_c, ρ_m$ (and between corresponding critical temperatures $T_m, T_c$) to show that observed space anisotropy of the condensate coherence can be described by a critical exponent $γ(T)$ related to the anisotropic ODLRO. We compare our calculations with physical results for extremely elongated traps that manifest "quasi-condensate".

Models with Recoil for Bose-Einstein Condensation and Superradiance

In this paper we consider two models which exhibit equilibrium BEC superradiance. They are related to two different types of superradiant scattering observed in recent experiments. The first one corresponds to the amplification of matter-waves due to Raman superradiant scattering from a cigar-shaped BE condensate, when the recoiled and the condensed atoms are in different internal states. The main mechanism is stimulated Raman scattering in two-level atoms, which occurs in a superradiant way. Our second model is related to the superradiant Rayleigh scattering from a cigar-shaped BE condensate. This again leads to a matter-waves amplification but now with the recoiled atoms in the same state as the atoms in the condensate. Here the recoiling atoms are able to interfere with the condensate at rest to form a matter-wave grating (interference fringes) which is observed experimentally.

The Canonical Perfect Bose Gas in Casimir Boxes

We study the problem of Bose-Einstein condensation in the perfect Bose gas in the canonical ensemble, in anisotropically dilated rectangular parallelpipeds (Casimir boxes). We prove that in the canonical ensemble for these anisotropic boxes there is the same type of generalized Bose-Einstein condensation as in the grand-canonical ensemble for the equivalent geometry. However the amount of condensate in the individual states is different in some cases and so are the fluctuations.
