Search for a critical point of strongly-interacting matter in central 40^{40}Ar +45^{45}Sc collisions at 13AA-75AA GeV/cc beam momentum

The critical point of strongly interacting matter is searched for at the CERN SPS by the NA61/SHINE experiment in central 40^{40}Ar +45^{45}Sc collisions at 13AA, 19AA, 30AA, 40AA, and 75AA GeV/cc. The dependence of the second-order scaled factorial moments of proton multiplicity distributions on the number of subdivisions in transverse momentum space is measured. The intermittency analysis uses statistically independent data sets for every subdivision in transverse and cumulative-transverse momentum variables. The results obtained do not indicate the searched intermittent pattern. An upper limit on the fraction of correlated protons and the intermittency index is obtained based on a comparison with the Power-law Model.

K∗(892)0K^{*}(892)^0 meson production in inelastic p+pp+p interactions at 40 and 80 GeV/cc beam momenta measured by NA61/SHINE at the CERN SPS

Measurements of K∗(892)0K^{*}(892)^0 resonance production via its K+π−K^{+}π^{-} decay mode in inelastic p+pp+p collisions at beam momenta 40 and 80 GeV/cc (sNN=8.8\sqrt{s_{NN}}=8.8 and 12.3 GeV) are presented. The data were recorded by the NA61/SHINE hadron spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The \textit{template} method was used to extract the K∗(892)0K^{*}(892)^0 signal. Transverse momentum and rapidity spectra were obtained. The mean multiplicities of K∗(892)0K^{*}(892)^0 mesons were found to be (35.1±1.3(stat)±3.6(sys))⋅10−3(35.1 \pm 1.3 \mathrm{(stat)} \pm 3.6 \mathrm{(sys)) \cdot 10^{-3}} at 40 GeV/cc and (58.3±1.9(stat)±4.9(sys))⋅10−3(58.3 \pm 1.9 \mathrm{(stat)} \pm 4.9 \mathrm{(sys)) \cdot 10^{-3}} at 80 GeV/cc. The NA61/SHINE results are compared with the EPOS1.99 and Hadron Resonance Gas models as well as with world data. The transverse mass spectra of K∗(892)0K^{*}(892)^0 mesons and other particles previously reported by NA61/SHINE were fitted within the Blast-Wave model. The transverse flow velocities are close to 0.1--0.2 of the speed of light and are significantly smaller than the ones determined in heavy nucleus-nucleus interactions at the same beam momenta.

Setup of Compton polarimeters for measuring entangled annihilation photons

An experimental setup for studying the Compton scattering of annihilation photons in various (entangled and decoherent) quantum states is presented. Two entangled γγ-quanta with an energy of 511 keV and mutually orthogonal polarizations are produced by positron-electron annihilation in a thin aluminum plate and are emitted in opposite directions. To measure both photons, the setup provides two equivalent arms of Compton polarimeters. A Compton polarimeter consists of a plastic scintillation scatterer and an array of NaI(Tl) detectors for measuring photons deflected at an angle of 90∘^\circ. The intermediate scatterer of the GAGG scintillator with SiPM readout is inserted into one of the arms to create a tagged decoherence process prior to the measurement of annihilation photons in polarimeters. The performance of Compton scatterers and NaI(Tl) counters is discussed. The polarization modulation factor and the analyzing power of Compton polarimeters are evaluated from the angular distributions of scattered gammas. The Compton scattering of photons in entangled and decoherent states is compared reliably for the first time.

The Upgrade I of LHCb VELO -- towards an intelligent monitoring platform

The Large Hadron Collider beauty (LHCb) detector is designed to detect decays of b- and c- hadrons for the study of CP violation and rare decays. At the end of the LHC Run 2, many of the LHCb measurements remained statistically dominated. In order to increase the trigger yield for purely hadronic channels, the hardware trigger will be removed, and the detector will be read out at 40 MHz. This, in combination with the five-fold increase in luminosity, requires radical changes to LHCb's electronics, and, in some cases, the replacement of entire sub-detectors with state-of-the-art detector technologies. The Vertex Locator (VELO) surrounding the interaction region is used to reconstruct the collision points (primary vertices) and decay vertices of long-lived particles (secondary vertices). The upgraded VELO will be composed of 52 modules placed along the beam axis divided into two retractable halves. The modules will each be equipped with 4 silicon hybrid pixel tiles, each read out by 3 VeloPix ASICs. The total output data rate anticipated for the whole detector will be around 1.6 Tbit/s. The highest occupancy ASICs will have pixel hit rates of approximately 900 Mhit/s, with the corresponding output data rate of 15 Gbit/s. The LHCb upgrade detector will be the first detector to read out at the full LHC rate of 40 MHz. The VELO upgrade will utilize the latest detector technologies to read out at this rate while maintaining the required radiation-hard profile and minimizing the detector material.

Constraints on the KS0→μ+μ−K^0_{\mathrm{S}}\rightarrowμ^{+}μ^{-} branching fraction

A search for the decay KS0→μ+μ−K^0_{\mathrm{S}}\rightarrowμ^{+}μ^{-} is performed using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.6 fb−15.6\,\text{fb}^{-1} and collected with the LHCb experiment during 2016, 2017 and 2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV13\,\mathrm{TeV}. The observed signal yield is consistent with zero, yielding an upper limit of B(KS0→μ+μ−)<2.2×10−10{\cal B}(K^0_{\mathrm{S}}\rightarrowμ^{+}μ^{-}) < 2.2 \times 10^{-10} at 90% CL. The limit reduces to B(KS0→μ+μ−)<2.1×10−10{\cal B}(K^0_{\mathrm{S}}\rightarrowμ^{+}μ^{-}) < 2.1 \times 10^{-10} at 90% CL once combined with the result from data taken in 2011 and 2012.

Nuclear matter distributions in the neutron-rich carbon isotopes 14−17^{14-17}C from intermediate-energy proton elastic scattering in inverse kinematics

The absolute differential cross sections for small-angle proton elastic scattering off the nuclei 12,14−17^{12,14-17}C have been measured in inverse kinematics at energies near 700 MeV/u at GSI Darmstadt. The hydrogen-filled ionization chamber IKAR served simultaneously as a gas target and a detector for the recoil protons. The projectile scattering angles were measured with multi-wire tracking detectors. The radial nuclear matter density distributions and the root-mean-square nuclear matter radii were deduced from the measured cross sections using the Glauber multiple-scattering theory. A possible neutron halo structure in 15^{15}C, 16^{16}C and 17^{17}C is discussed. The obtained data show evidence for a halo structure in the 15^{15}C nucleus.

Amplitude analysis of the B+→π+π+π−B^+ \rightarrow π^+π^+π^- decay

The results of an amplitude analysis of the charmless three-body decay B+→π+π+π−B^+ \rightarrow π^+π^+π^-, in which C ⁣PC\!P-violation effects are taken into account, are reported. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3fb−13 \text{fb}^{-1} of pppp collisions recorded with the LHCb detector. The most challenging aspect of the analysis is the description of the behaviour of the π+π−π^+ π^- S-wave contribution, which is achieved by using three complementary approaches based on the isobar model, the K-matrix formalism, and a quasi-model-independent procedure. Additional resonant contributions for all three methods are described using a common isobar model, and include the ρ(770)0ρ(770)^0, ω(782)ω(782) and ρ(1450)0ρ(1450)^0 resonances in the π+π−π^+π^- P-wave, the f2(1270)f_2(1270) resonance in the π+π−π^+π^- D-wave, and the ρ3(1690)0ρ_3(1690)^0 resonance in the π+π−π^+π^- F-wave. Significant C ⁣PC\!P-violation effects are observed in both S- and D-waves, as well as in the interference between the S- and P-waves. The results from all three approaches agree and provide new insight into the dynamics and the origin of C ⁣PC\!P-violation effects in B+→π+π+π−B^+ \rightarrow π^+π^+π^- decays.

Determination of quantum numbers for several excited charmed mesons observed in B−→D∗+π−π−B^- \to D^{*+} π^- π^- decays

A four-body amplitude analysis of the B−→D∗+π−π−B^- \to D^{*+} π^- π^- decay is performed, where fractions and relative phases of the various resonances contributing to the decay are measured. Several quasi-model-independent analyses are performed aimed at searching for the presence of new states and establishing the quantum numbers of previously observed charmed meson resonances. In particular the resonance parameters and quantum numbers are determined for the D1(2420)D_1(2420), D1(2430)D_1(2430), D0(2550)D_0(2550), D1∗(2600)D^*_1(2600), D2(2740)D_2(2740) and D3∗(2750)D^*_3(2750) states. The mixing between the D1(2420)D_1(2420) and D1(2430)D_1(2430) resonances is studied and the mixing parameters are measured. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb−1fb^{-1}, collected in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV with the LHCb detector.

First observation of excited Ωb−Ω_b^- states

We report four narrow peaks in the Ξb0K−Ξ_b^0K^- mass spectrum obtained using pppp collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1^{-1} recorded by the LHCb experiment. Referring to these states by their mass, the mass values are \begin{align*} m(Ω_b(6316)^-) &= 6315.64\pm0.31\pm0.07\pm0.50 {\rm MeV}, \\ m(Ω_b(6330)^-) &= 6330.30\pm0.28\pm0.07\pm0.50 {\rm MeV}, \\ m(Ω_b(6340)^-) &= 6339.71\pm0.26\pm0.05\pm0.50 {\rm MeV}, \\ m(Ω_b(6350)^-) &= 6349.88\pm0.35\pm0.05\pm0.50 {\rm MeV}, \end{align*}where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and the last is due to the knowledge of the Ξb0Ξ_b^0 mass. The natural widths of the three lower mass states are consistent with zero, and the 90% confidence-level upper limits are determined to be Γ(Ωb(6316)−)<2.8{Γ(Ω_b(6316)^-)<2.8} MeV, Γ(Ωb(6330)−)<3.1{Γ(Ω_b(6330)^-)<3.1} MeV and Γ(Ωb(6340)−)<1.5{Γ(Ω_b(6340)^-)<1.5} MeV. The natural width of the Ωb(6350)−Ω_b(6350)^- peak is 1.4−0.8+1.0±0.11.4^{+1.0}_{-0.8}\pm0.1 MeV, which is 2.5σσ from zero and corresponds to an upper limit of 2.8 MeV. The peaks have local significances ranging from 3.6σσ to 7.2σσ. After accounting for the look-elsewhere effect, the significances of the Ωb(6316)−Ω_b(6316)^- and Ωb(6330)−Ω_b(6330)^- peaks are reduced to 2.1σσ and 2.6σσ respectively, while the two higher mass peaks exceed 5σσ. The observed peaks are consistent with expectations for excited Ωb−Ω_b^- resonances.

Hunting down the X17 boson at the CERN SPS

Recently, the ATOMKI experiment has reported new evidence for the excess of e+e−e^+ e^- events with a mass ∼\sim17 MeV in the nuclear transitions of 4^4He, that they previously observed in measurements with 8^8Be. These observations could be explained by the existence of a new vector X17X17 boson. So far, the search for the decay X17→e+e−X17 \rightarrow e^+ e^- with the NA64 experiment at the CERN SPS gave negative results. Here, we present a new technique that could be implemented in NA64 aiming to improve the sensitivity and to cover the remaining X17X17 parameter space. If a signal-like event is detected, an unambiguous observation is achieved by reconstructing the invariant mass of the X17X17 decay with the proposed method. To reach this goal an optimization of the X17X17 production target, as well as an efficient and accurate reconstruction of two close decay tracks, is required. A dedicated analysis of the available experimental data making use of the trackers information is presented. This method provides independent confirmation of the NA64 published results [Phys. Rev. D101, 071101 (2020)], validating the tracking procedure. The detailed Monte Carlo study of the proposed setup and the background estimate shows that the goal of the proposed search is feasible.

Isospin amplitudes in Λb0→J/ψΛ(Σ0)Λ_b^0\to J/ψΛ(Σ^0) and Ξb0→J/ψΞ0(Λ)Ξ_b^0\to J/ψΞ^0(Λ) decays

Ratios of isospin amplitudes in hadron decays are a useful probe of the interplay between weak and strong interactions, and allow searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. We present the first results on isospin amplitudes in bb-baryon decays, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 8.5 fb−1^{-1}, collected with the LHCb detector in pppp collisions at center of mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The isospin amplitude ratio ∣A1(Λb0→J/ψΣ0)/A0(Λb0→J/ψΛ)∣|A_1(Λ_b^0\to J/ψΣ^0)/A_0(Λ_b^0\to J/ψΛ)|, where the subscript on AA indicates the final-state isospin, is measured to be less than 1/21.8 at 95\% confidence level. The Cabibbo suppressed Ξb0→J/ψΛΞ_b^0\to J/ψΛ decay is observed for the first time, allowing for the measurement ∣A0(Ξb0→J/ψΛ)/A1/2(Ξb0→J/ψΞ0)∣=0.37±0.06±0.02|A_0(Ξ_b^0\to J/ψΛ)/A_{1/2}(Ξ_b^0\to J/ψΞ^0)| =0.37 \pm 0.06\pm 0.02, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

The production of Ξcc++\mathitΞ_{cc}^{++} baryons in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s=13\sqrt{s}=13 TeV is measured in the transverse-momentum range 4<pT<15 GeV4<p_\mathrm{T}<15~\mathrm{GeV}/cc and the rapidity range 2.0<y<4.52.0<y<4.5. The data used in this measurement correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.7 fb−1\mathrm{fb}^{-1}, recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2016. The ratio of the Ξcc++\mathitΞ_{cc}^{++} production cross-section times the branching fraction of the Ξcc++→Λc+K−π+π+\mathit{Ξ_{cc}^{++} \to Λ_{c}^{+} K^- π^+ π^+} decay relative to the prompt Λc+\mathit{Λ_c^{+}} production cross-section is found to be (2.22±0.27±0.29)×10−4(2.22\pm 0.27 \pm 0.29)\times 10^{-4}, assuming the central value of the measured Ξcc++\mathit{Ξ_{cc}^{++}} lifetime, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

Measurement of fs/fuf_s / f_u variation with proton-proton collision energy and BB-meson kinematics

The ratio of the Bs0\mathrm{B}^0_\mathrm{s} and B+\mathrm{B}^+ fragmentation fractions fsf_\mathrm{s} and fuf_u is studied with Bs0→J/ψϕB^0_\mathrm{s}\to\mathrm{J}/ψϕ and B+→J/ψK+B^+\to\mathrm{J}/ψK^+ decays using data collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at 7, 8 and 13 TeV\text{ TeV} center-of-mass energies. The analysis is performed in bins of B\mathrm{B}-meson momentum, longitudinal momentum, transverse momentum, pseudorapidity and rapidity. The fragmentation-fraction ratio fs/fuf_\mathrm{s} / f_u is observed to depend on the B\mathrm{B}-meson transverse momentum with a significance of 6.0 σ6.0\,σ. This dependency is driven by the 13 TeV\text{ TeV} sample (8.7 σ8.7\,σ) while the results for the other collision energies are not significant when considered separately. Furthermore the results show a 4.8 σ4.8\,σ evidence for an increase of fs/fuf_\mathrm{s} / f_u as a function of collision energy.

Measurement of CP violation in the Bs0→ϕϕB_s^0\rightarrowϕϕ decay and search for the B0→ϕϕB^0\rightarrow ϕϕ decay

A measurement of the time-dependent CP-violating asymmetry in Bs0→ϕϕB_s^0\rightarrowϕϕ decays is presented. Using a sample of proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.05.0fb−1^{-1} collected by the $\mbox{LHCb}$ experiment at centre-of-mass energies s=7\sqrt{s} = 7 TeV in 2011, 8 TeV in 2012 and 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016, a signal yield of around 9000 Bs0→ϕϕB_s^0\rightarrowϕϕ decays is obtained. The CP-violating phase ϕsssˉsϕ_s^{s\bar{s}s} is measured to be −0.073±0.115-0.073 \pm 0.115(stat)±0.027\pm 0.027(syst) rad, under the assumption it is independent on the helicity of the ϕϕϕϕ decay. In addition, the CP-violating phases of the transverse polarisations under the assumption of CP conservation of the longitudinal phase are measured. The helicity-independent direct CP-violation parameter is also measured, and is found to be ∣λ∣=0.99±0.05|λ|=0.99 \pm 0.05 (stat)±0.01 \pm 0.01 (syst). In addition, TT-odd triple-product asymmetries are measured. The results obtained are consistent with the hypothesis of CP conservation in b→sˉssˉb\rightarrow\bar{s}s\bar{s} transitions. Finally, a limit on the branching fraction of the B0→ϕϕB^0\rightarrow ϕϕ decay is determined to be B(B0→ϕϕ)<2.7×10−8\mathcal{B}(B^0\rightarrow ϕϕ)<2.7\times 10^{-8} at 90% confidence level.

The production cross-sections for prompt ψ(2S)ψ(2S) mesons and those for ψ(2S)ψ(2S) mesons from bb-hadron decays (ψ(2S)−from−bψ{(2S)}\mathrm{-from-}b) are determined as functions of the transverse momentum, pTp_{\mathrm{T}}, and the rapidity, yy, of the ψ(2S)ψ(2S) meson in the kinematic range 2<pT<20 GeV/c2<p_{\mathrm{T}}<20~\mathrm{GeV}/c and 2.0<y<4.52.0<y<4.5. Measurement of the ηc(1S)η_c(1S) production cross-section in pppp collisions at s=13\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV

Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.0 fb−12.0\,fb^{-1}, collected by the LHCb experiment, the production of the ηc(1S)η_c(1S) state in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s=13 TeV\sqrt{s}=13 \text{ TeV} is studied in the rapidity range 2.0<y<4.5{2.0 < y < 4.5} and in the transverse momentum range 6.5<pT<14.0 GeV{6.5 < p_{T} < 14.0\text{ GeV}}. The cross-section for prompt production of ηc(1S)η_c(1S) mesons relative to that of the J/ψJ/ψ meson is measured using the ppˉ{p\bar{p}} decay mode and is found to be σηc(1S)/σJ/ψ=1.69±0.15±0.10±0.18{σ_{η_c(1S)}/σ_{J/ψ} = 1.69 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.18}. The quoted uncertainties are, in order, statistical, systematic and due to uncertainties on the branching fractions of the J/ψ→ppˉ{J/ψ\to p \bar{p}} and ηc→ppˉ{η_c\to p \bar{p}} decays. The prompt ηc(1S)η_c(1S) production cross-section is determined to be σηc(1S)=1.26±0.11±0.08±0.14 μb{σ_{η_c(1S)} = 1.26 \pm 0.11\pm 0.08 \pm 0.14 \,μb}, where the last uncertainty includes that on the J/ψ{J/ψ} meson cross-section. The ratio of the branching fractions of bb-hadron decays to the ηc(1S)η_c(1S) and J/ψ{J/ψ} states is measured to be Bb→ηcX/Bb→J/ψX=0.48±0.03±0.03±0.05{\mathcal{B}_{b\toη_c X}/\mathcal{B}_{b\to J/ψX} = 0.48 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.05}, where the last uncertainty is due to those on the branching fractions of the J/ψ→ppˉ{J/ψ\to p \bar{p}} and ηc→ppˉ{η_c\to p \bar{p}} decays. The difference between the J/ψ{J/ψ} and ηc(1S)η_c(1S) masses is also determined to be 113.0±0.7±0.1 MeV{113.0 \pm 0.7 \pm 0.1\text{ MeV}}, which is the most precise single measurement of this quantity to date.

Observation of new resonances in the Λb0π+π−Λ_{b}^0π^+π^- system

We report the observation of a new structure in the Λb0π+π−Λ_b^0 π^+π^- spectrum using the full LHCb data set of pppp collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−19\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}, collected at s=7\sqrt{s}=7, 8 and 13 TeV13\,\mathrm{TeV}. A study of the structure suggests its interpretation as a superposition of two almost degenerate narrow states. The masses and widths of these states are measured to be \begin{eqnarray*} m_{Λ_{b}\mathrm{(6146)}^0} &=&6146.17 \pm 0.33 \pm 0.22 \pm 0.16\,\mathrm{MeV} \,, m_{Λ_{b}\mathrm{(6152)}^0} &=&6152.51 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.22 \pm 0.16\,\mathrm{MeV} \,, Γ_{Λ_{b}\mathrm{(6146)}^0}&=&\phantom{615}2.9\phantom{0}\pm 1.3\phantom{0} \pm 0.3\phantom{0}\,\mathrm{MeV}\,, Γ_{Λ_{b}\mathrm{(6152)}^0} &=&\phantom{615}2.1\phantom{0}\pm 0.8\phantom{0} \pm 0.3\phantom{0}\,\mathrm{MeV}\,, \end{eqnarray*} with a mass splitting of Δm=6.34±0.32±0.02 MeVΔm = 6.34 \pm 0.32 \pm 0.02\,\mathrm{MeV}, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third derives from the knowledge of the mass of the Λb0Λ_b^0 baryon. The measured masses and widths of these new excited states suggest their possible interpretation as a doublet of Λb(1D)0Λ_{b}\mathrm{(1D)}^0 states.

Observation of several sources of CPCP violation in B+→π+π+π−B^+ \to π^+ π^+ π^- decays

Observations are reported of different sources of CPCP violation from an amplitude analysis of B+→π+π+π−B^+ \to π^+ π^+ π^- decays, based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3  fb−13 \; {\rm fb}^{-1} of pppp collisions recorded with the LHCb detector. A large CPCP asymmetry is observed in the decay amplitude involving the tensor f2(1270)f_2(1270) resonance, and in addition significant CPCP violation is found in the π+π−π^+ π^- S-wave at low invariant mass. The presence of CPCP violation related to interference between the π+π−π^+ π^- S-wave and the P-wave B+→ρ(770)0π+B^+ \to ρ(770)^0 π^+ amplitude is also established; this causes large local asymmetries but cancels when integrated over the phase space of the decay. The results provide both qualitative and quantitative new insights into CPCP-violation effects in hadronic BB decays.

The Cabibbo-suppressed semileptonic decay B+→pp‾μ+νμB^{+}\to p\overline{p}μ^{+}ν_μ is observed for the first time using a sample of pppp collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0, 2.0 and 1.7fb−1^{-1} at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13TeV, respectively. The differential branching fraction is measured as a function of the pp‾p\overline{p} invariant mass using the decay mode B+→J/ψK+B^{+}\to J/ψK^{+} for normalisation. The total branching fraction is measured to be \begin{align*} \mathcal{B}(B^{+}\to p\overline{p}μ^{+}ν_μ) = (5.27 ^{+0.23}_{-0.24} \pm 0.21 \pm 0.15)\times 10^{-6}, \end{align*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is from the uncertainty on the branching fraction of the normalisation channel.

A measurement of the Ξcc++Ξ_{cc}^{++} mass is performed using data collected by the LHCb experiment between 2016 and 2018 in pppp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.6 fb−1\mathrm{fb}^{-1}. Search for A′ ⁣→ ⁣μ+μ−A'\!\to\!μ^+μ^- decays

Searches are performed for both prompt-like and long-lived dark photons, A′A', produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. These searches look for A′ ⁣→ ⁣μ+μ−A'\!\to\!μ^+μ^- decays using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.5/fb collected with the LHCb detector. Neither search finds evidence for a signal, and 90% confidence-level exclusion limits are placed on the γγ-A′A' kinetic-mixing strength. The prompt-like A′A' search explores the mass region from near the dimuon threshold up to 70 GeV, and places the most stringent constraints to date on dark photons with 214<m(A′)≲740214 < m(A') \lesssim 740 MeV and 10.6<m(A′)≲3010.6 < m(A') \lesssim 30 GeV. The search for long-lived A′ ⁣→ ⁣μ+μ−A'\!\to\!μ^+μ^- decays places world-leading constraints on low-mass dark photons with lifetimes O(1)\mathcal{O}(1) ps.

Study of ΥΥ production in ppPb collisions at sNN=8.16\sqrt{s_{NN}}=8.16 TeV

The production of Υ(nS)Υ(nS) mesons (n=1,2,3n=1,2,3) in ppPb and Pbpp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair sNN=8.16\sqrt{s_{NN}}=8.16 TeV is measured by the LHCb experiment, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 31.8 nb−1^{-1}. The Υ(nS)Υ(nS) mesons are reconstructed through their decays into two opposite-sign muons. The measurements comprise the differential production cross-sections of the Υ(1S)Υ(1S) and Υ(2S)Υ(2S) states, their forward-to-backward ratios and nuclear modification factors, performed as a function of the transverse momentum \pt and rapidity in the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass frame y∗y^* of the Υ(nS)Υ(nS) states, in the kinematic range pT<25p_{\rm{T}}<25 GeV/cc and 1.5<y∗<4.01.5<y^*<4.0 (−5.0<y∗<−2.5-5.0<y^*<-2.5) for ppPb (Pbpp) collisions. In addition, production cross-sections for Υ(3S)Υ(3S) are measured integrated over phase space and the production ratios between all three Υ(nS)Υ(nS) states are determined. The measurements are compared to theoretical predictions and suppressions for quarkonium in ppPb collisions are observed.

Updated measurement of decay-time-dependent CP asymmetries in D0→K+K−D^0 \to K^+K^- and D0→π+π−D^0 \to π^+π^- decays

A search for decay-time-dependent charge-parity (CPCP) asymmetry in D0→K+K−D^0 \to K^+K^- and D0→π+π−D^0 \to π^+π^- decays is performed at the LHCb experiment using proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13TeV, and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4fb−1^{-1}. The D0D^0 mesons are required to originate from semileptonic decays of bb hadrons, such that the charge of the muon identifies the flavor of the neutral DD meson at production. The asymmetries in the effective decay widths of D0D^0 and D‾0\overline{D}^0 mesons are determined to be AΓ(K+K−)=(−4.3±3.6±0.5)×10−4A_Γ(K^+K^-) = ( -4.3 \pm 3.6 \pm 0.5 )\times 10^{-4} and AΓ(π+π−)=(2.2±7.0±0.8)×10−4A_Γ(π^+π^-) = ( 2.2 \pm 7.0 \pm 0.8)\times 10^{-4}, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The results are consistent with CPCP symmetry and, when combined with previous LHCb results, yield AΓ(K+K−)=(−4.4±2.3±0.6)×10−4A_Γ(K^+K^-) = ( -4.4 \pm 2.3 \pm 0.6 )\times 10^{-4} and AΓ(π+π−)=(2.5±4.3±0.7)×10−4A_Γ(π^+π^-) = ( 2.5 \pm 4.3 \pm 0.7)\times 10^{-4}.

Updated measurement of time-dependent CPCP-violating observables in Bs0→J/ψK+K−B^{0}_{s}\to J/ψK^+ K^- decays

The decay-time-dependent CPCP asymmetry in Bs0→J/ψK+K−B^{0}_{s}\to J/ψK^{+} K^{-} decays is measured using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.9 fb−11.9\,\mathrm{fb^{-1}}, collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV13\,\mathrm{TeV} in 2015 and 2016. Using a sample of approximately 117\,000 signal decays with an invariant K+K−K^{+} K^{-} mass in the vicinity of the ϕ(1020)ϕ(1020) resonance, the CPCP-violating phase ϕsϕ_s is measured, along with the difference in decay widths of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the Bs0B^{0}_{s}-Bˉs0\bar{B}^{0}_{s} system, ΔΓsΔΓ_s. The difference of the average Bs0B^{0}_{s} and B0B^{0} meson decay widths, Γs−ΓdΓ_s-Γ_d, is determined using in addition a sample of B0→J/ψK+π−B^{0} \to J/ψK^{+} π^{-} decays. The values obtained are ϕs=−0.083±0.041±0.006 radϕ_s = -0.083\pm0.041\pm0.006\,\mathrm{rad}, ΔΓs=0.077±0.008±0.003 ps−1ΔΓ_s = 0.077 \pm 0.008 \pm 0.003\, \mathrm{ps^{-1}} and Γs−Γd=−0.0041±0.0024±0.0015 ps−1Γ_s-Γ_d = -0.0041 \pm 0.0024 \pm 0.0015\,\mathrm{ps^{-1}}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These are the most precise single measurements of these quantities to date and are consistent with expectations based on the Standard Model and with a previous LHCb analysis of this decay using data recorded at centre-of-mass energies 7 and 8 TeV. Finally, the results are combined with recent results from Bs0→J/ψπ+π−B^{0}_{s}\to J/ψπ^{+} π^{-} decays obtained using the same dataset as this analysis, and with previous independent LHCb results.

A model-independent confirmation of the Z(4430)−Z(4430)^- state

The decay B0→ψ(2S)K+π−B^0\to ψ(2S) K^+π^- is analyzed using 3 fb−1\rm 3~fb^{-1} of pppp collision data collected with the LHCb detector. A model-independent description of the ψ(2S)πψ(2S) π mass spectrum is obtained, using as input the KπKπ mass spectrum and angular distribution derived directly from data, without requiring a theoretical description of resonance shapes or their interference. The hypothesis that the ψ(2S)πψ(2S)π mass spectrum can be described in terms of KπKπ reflections alone is rejected with more than 8σσ significance. This provides confirmation, in a model-independent way, of the need for an additional resonant component in the mass region of the Z(4430)−Z(4430)^- exotic state.

A new algorithm for identifying the flavour of Bs0B_s^0 mesons at LHCb

A new algorithm for the determination of the initial flavour of Bs0B_s^0 mesons is presented. The algorithm is based on two neural networks and exploits the bb hadron production mechanism at a hadron collider. The first network is trained to select charged kaons produced in association with the Bs0B_s^0 meson. The second network combines the kaon charges to assign the Bs0B_s^0 flavour and estimates the probability of a wrong assignment. The algorithm is calibrated using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at 7 and 8 TeV centre-of-mass energies. The calibration is performed in two ways: by resolving the Bs0B_s^0-Bˉs0\bar{B}_s^0 flavour oscillations in Bs0→Ds−π+B_s^0 \to D_s^- π^+ decays, and by analysing flavour-specific Bs2∗(5840)0→B+K−B_{s 2}^{*}(5840)^0 \to B^+ K^- decays. The tagging power measured in Bs0→Ds−π+B_s^0 \to D_s^- π^+ decays is found to be (1.80±0.19(stat)±0.18(syst))(1.80 \pm 0.19({\rm stat}) \pm 0.18({\rm syst}))\%, which is an improvement of about 50\% compared to a similar algorithm previously used in the LHCb experiment.

Amplitude analysis of B−→D+π−π−B^{-} \to D^{+} π^{-} π^{-} decays

The Dalitz plot analysis technique is used to study the resonant substructures of B−→D+π−π−B^{-} \to D^{+} π^{-} π^{-} decays in a data sample corresponding to 3.0 fb−1{\rm fb}^{-1} of pppp collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2011 and 2012. A model-independent analysis of the angular moments demonstrates the presence of resonances with spins 1, 2 and 3 at high D+π−D^{+}π^{-} mass. The data are fitted with an amplitude model composed of a quasi-model-independent function to describe the D+π−D^{+}π^{-} S-wave together with virtual contributions from the D∗(2007)0D^{*}(2007)^{0} and B∗0B^{*0} states, and components corresponding to the D2∗(2460)0D^{*}_{2}(2460)^{0}, D1∗(2680)0D^{*}_{1}(2680)^{0}, D3∗(2760)0D^{*}_{3}(2760)^{0} and D2∗(3000)0D^{*}_{2}(3000)^{0} resonances. The masses and widths of these resonances are determined together with the branching fractions for their production in B−→D+π−π−B^{-} \to D^{+} π^{-} π^{-} decays. The D+π−D^{+}π^{-} S-wave has phase motion consistent with that expected due to the presence of the D0∗(2400)0D^{*}_{0}(2400)^{0} state. These results constitute the first observations of the D3∗(2760)0D^{*}_{3}(2760)^{0} and D2∗(3000)0D^{*}_{2}(3000)^{0} resonances.

Angular analysis of the B0→K∗0μ+μ−B^{0}\rightarrow K^{*0}μ^{+}μ^{-} decay using $3\,\mbox{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity

An angular analysis of the B0→K∗0(→K+π−)μ+μ−B^{0}\rightarrow K^{*0}(\rightarrow K^{+}π^{-})μ^{+}μ^{-} decay is presented. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $3.0\,{\mbox{fb}^{-1}}$ of pppp collision data collected at the LHCb experiment. The complete angular information from the decay is used to determine C ⁣PC\!P-averaged observables and C ⁣PC\!P asymmetries, taking account of possible contamination from decays with the K+π−K^{+}π^{-} system in an S-wave configuration. The angular observables and their correlations are reported in bins of q2q^2, the invariant mass squared of the dimuon system. The observables are determined both from an unbinned maximum likelihood fit and by using the principal moments of the angular distribution. In addition, by fitting for q2q^2-dependent decay amplitudes in the region 1.1<q2<6.0 GeV2/c41.1<q^{2}<6.0\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}^{2}/c^{4}, the zero-crossing points of several angular observables are computed. A global fit is performed to the complete set of C ⁣PC\!P-averaged observables obtained from the maximum likelihood fit. This fit indicates differences with predictions based on the Standard Model at the level of 3.4 standard deviations. These differences could be explained by contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model, or by an unexpectedly large hadronic effect that is not accounted for in the Standard Model predictions.

Constraints on the unitarity triangle angle γγ from Dalitz plot analysis of B0→DK+π−B^0 \to D K^+ π^- decays

The first study is presented of CP violation with an amplitude analysis of the Dalitz plot of B0→DK+π−B^0 \to D K^+ π^- decays, with D→K+π−D \to K^+ π^-, K+K−K^+ K^- and π+π−π^+ π^-. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to 3.0 fb−13.0\,{\rm fb}^{-1} of pppp collisions collected with the LHCb detector. No significant CP violation effect is seen, and constraints are placed on the angle γγ of the unitarity triangle formed from elements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix. Hadronic parameters associated with the B0→DK∗(892)0B^0 \to D K^*(892)^0 decay are determined for the first time. Evidence for exotic hadron contributions to Λb0→J/ψpπ−Λ_b^0 \to J/ψp π^- decays

A full amplitude analysis of Λb0→J/ψpπ−Λ_b^0 \to J/ψp π^- decays is performed with a data sample acquired with the LHCb detector from 7 and 8 TeV pppp collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1^{-1}. A significantly better description of the data is achieved when, in addition to the previously observed nucleon excitations N→pπ−N\to pπ^-, either the Pc(4380)+P_c(4380)^+ and Pc(4450)+→J/ψpP_c(4450)^+\to J/ψp states, previously observed in Λb0→J/ψpK−Λ_b^0 \to J/ψp K^- decays, or the Zc(4200)−→J/ψπ−Z_c(4200)^-\to J/ψπ^- state, previously reported in B0→J/ψK+π−B^0 \to J/ψK^+ π^- decays, or all three, are included in the amplitude models. The data support a model containing all three exotic states, with a significance of more than three standard deviations. Within uncertainties, the data are consistent with the Pc(4380)+P_c(4380)^+ and Pc(4450)+P_c(4450)^+ production rates expected from their previous observation taking account of Cabibbo suppression.

First observation of D0−Dˉ0D^0-\bar D^0 oscillations in D0→K+π−π+π−D^0\to K^+π^-π^+π^- decays and measurement of the associated coherence parameters

Charm meson oscillations are observed in a time-dependent analysis of the ratio of D0→K+π−π+π−D^0\to K^+π^-π^+π^- to D0→K−π+π−π+D^0\to K^-π^+π^-π^+ decay rates, using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−13.0\,{\rm fb}^{-1} recorded by the LHCb experiment. The measurements presented are sensitive to the phase-space averaged ratio of doubly Cabibbo-suppressed to Cabibbo-favoured amplitudes rDK3πr_{D}^{K3π} and the product of the coherence factor RDK3πR_{D}^{K3π} and a charm mixing parameter yK3π′y^{'}_{K3π}. The constraints measured are rDK3π=(5.67±0.12)×10−2r_{D}^{K3π}=(5.67 \pm 0.12)\times10^{-2}, which is the most precise determination to date, and RDK3π⋅yK3π′=(0.3±1.8)×10−3R_{D}^{K3π} \cdot y^{'}_{K3π} = (0.3 \pm 1.8)\times 10^{-3}, which provides useful input for determinations of the CP-violating phase γγ in B±→DK±,D→K∓π±π∓π±B^\pm \to D K^\pm, D \to K^\mpπ^\pmπ^\mpπ^\pm decays. Measurement of forward W→eνW\to eν production in pppp collisions at s=8 \sqrt{s}=8\,TeV

The electrons are required to have more than 20 20\,GeV of transverse momentum and to lie between 2.00 and 4.25 in pseudorapidity. The inclusive WW production cross-sections, where the WW decays to eνeν, are measured to be \begin{equation*} σ_{W^{+} \to e^{+}ν_{e}}=1124.4\pm 2.1\pm 21.5\pm 11.2\pm 13.0\,\mathrm{pb}, \end{equation*} \begin{equation*} σ_{W^{-} \to e^{-}\barν_{e}}=\,\,\,809.0\pm 1.9\pm 18.1\pm\,\,\,7.0\pm \phantom{0}9.4\,\mathrm{pb}, \end{equation*} where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second are systematic, the third are due to the knowledge of the LHC beam energy and the fourth are due to the luminosity determination. Measurement of the CPCP asymmetry in Bs0−B‾s0B_s^0-\overline{B}{}_s^0 mixing

The CPCP asymmetry in the mixing of Bs0B_s^0 and B‾s0\overline{B}{}_s^0 mesons is measured in proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1^{-1}, recorded by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. Semileptonic Bs0B_s^0 and B‾s0\overline{B}{}_s^0 decays are studied in the inclusive mode Ds∓μ±νμXD_s^{\mp} μ^{\pm} ν_μ X with the Ds∓D_s^{\mp} mesons reconstructed in the K+K−π∓K^+ K^- π^{\mp} final state. Correcting the observed charge asymmetry for detection and background effects, the CPCP asymmetry is found to be asls=(0.39±0.26±0.20)%a_{\text{sl}}^s = (0.39 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.20) \% , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This is the most precise measurement of aslsa_{\text{sl}}^s to date. It is consistent with the prediction from the Standard Model and will constrain new models of particle physics.

Measurement of the CKM angle γγ from a combination of LHCb results

A combination of measurements sensitive to the CKM angle γγ from LHCb is performed. The inputs are from analyses of time-integrated B+→DK+B^{+}\rightarrow DK^+, B0→DK∗0B^{0} \rightarrow D K^{*0}, B0→DK+π−B^{0} \rightarrow D K^+ π^- and B+→DK+π+π−B^{+} \rightarrow D K^+π^+π^- tree-level decays. In addition, results from a time-dependent analysis of Bs0→Ds∓K±B_{s}^{0} \rightarrow D_{s}^{\mp}K^{\pm} decays are included. The combination yields γ=(72.2−7.3+6.8)∘γ= (72.2^{+6.8}_{-7.3})^\circ, where the uncertainty includes systematic effects. The 95.5% confidence level interval is determined to be γ∈[55.9,85.2]∘γ\in [55.9,85.2]^\circ. A second combination is investigated, also including measurements from B+→Dπ+B^{+} \rightarrow D π^+ and B+→Dπ+π−π+B^{+} \rightarrow D π^+π^-π^+ decays, which yields compatible results.

Measurement of the CKM angle γγ using B0→DK∗0B^0 \rightarrow D K^{*0} with D→KS0π+π−D \rightarrow K^0_S π^+ π^- decays

A model-dependent amplitude analysis of the decay B0→D(KS0π+π−)K∗0B^0\rightarrow D(K^0_Sπ^+π^-) K^{*0} is performed using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0fb−1^{-1}, recorded at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 and 8TeV8 TeV by the LHCb experiment. The CP violation observables x±x_{\pm} and y±y_{\pm}, sensitive to the CKM angle γγ, are measured to be \begin{eqnarray*} x_- &=& -0.15 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.01, y_- &=& 0.25 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.01, x_+ &=& 0.05 \pm 0.24 \pm 0.04 \pm 0.01, y_+ &=& -0.65^{+0.24}_{-0.23} \pm 0.08 \pm 0.01, \end{eqnarray*} where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second systematic and the third arise from the uncertainty on the D→KS0π+π−D\rightarrow K^0_S π^+π^- amplitude model. These are the most precise measurements of these observables. They correspond to γ=(80−22+21)∘γ=(80^{+21}_{-22})^{\circ} and rB0=0.39±0.13r_{B^0}=0.39\pm0.13, where rB0r_{B^0} is the magnitude of the ratio of the suppressed and favoured B0→DK+π−B^0\rightarrow D K^+ π^- decay amplitudes, in a KπKπ mass region of ±50MeV\pm50 MeV around the K∗(892)0K^*(892)^0 mass and for an absolute value of the cosine of the K∗0K^{*0} decay angle larger than 0.40.4.

Measurement of the difference of time-integrated CP asymmetries in D0→K−K+D^0 \rightarrow K^{-} K^{+} and D0→π−π+D^0 \rightarrow π^{-} π^{+} decays

A search for CP violation in D0→K−K+D^0 \rightarrow K^{-} K^{+} and D0→π−π+D^0 \rightarrow π^{-} π^{+} decays is performed using pppp collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−13~fb^{-1}, collected using the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 8~TeV. The flavour of the charm meson is inferred from the charge of the pion in D∗+→D0π+D^{*+}\rightarrow D^0π^+ and D∗−→D0ˉπ−D^{*-}\rightarrow \bar{D^0}π^{-} decays. The difference between the CP asymmetries in D0→K−K+D^0 \rightarrow K^{-} K^{+} and D0→π−π+D^0 \rightarrow π^{-} π^{+} decays, ΔACP≡ACP(K−K+)−ACP(π−π+)ΔA_{CP} \equiv A_{CP}(K^{-} K^{+}) - A_{CP}(π^{-} π^{+}), is measured to be (−0.10±0.08(stat)±0.03(syst))%\left( -0.10 \pm 0.08(stat) \pm 0.03(syst) \right) \%. This is the most precise measurement of a time-integrated CP asymmetry in the charm sector from a single experiment.

Measurement of the forward Z boson production cross-section in pp collisions at s=13\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV

A measurement of the production cross-section of Z bosons in pp collisions at s=13\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV is presented using dimuon and dielectron final states in LHCb data. The cross-section is measured for leptons with pseudorapidities in the range 2.0<η<4.52.0 < η< 4.5, transverse momenta pT>20p_\text{T} > 20 GeV and dilepton invariant mass in the range 60<m(ℓℓ)<12060<m(\ell\ell)<120 GeV. The integrated cross-section from averaging the two final states is \begin{equation*}σ_{\text{Z}}^{\ell\ell} = 194.3 \pm 0.9 \pm 3.3 \pm 7.6\text{ pb,}\end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is due to systematic effects, and the third is due to the luminosity determination. In addition, differential cross-sections are measured as functions of the Z boson rapidity, transverse momentum and the angular variable ϕη∗ϕ^*_η.

Measurement of the mass and lifetime of the Ωb−Ω_b^- baryon

A proton-proton collision data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1^{-1} collected by LHCb at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 and 8 TeV, is used to reconstruct 63±963\pm9 Ωb−→Ωc0π−Ω_b^-\toΩ_c^0π^-, Ωc0→pK−K−π+Ω_c^0\to pK^-K^-π^+ decays. Using the Ξb−→Ξc0π−Ξ_b^-\toΞ_c^0π^-, Ξc0→pK−K−π+Ξ_c^0\to pK^-K^-π^+ decay mode for calibration, the lifetime ratio and absolute lifetime of the Ωb−Ω_b^- baryon are measured to be \begin{align*} \frac{τ_{Ω_b^-}}{τ_{Ξ_b^-}} &= 1.11\pm0.16\pm0.03, \\ τ_{Ω_b^-} &= 1.78\pm0.26\pm0.05\pm0.06~{\rm ps}, \end{align*} where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and from the calibration mode (for τΩb−τ_{Ω_b^-} only). A measurement is also made of the mass difference, mΩb−−mΞb−m_{Ω_b^-}-m_{Ξ_b^-}, and the corresponding Ωb−Ω_b^- mass, which yields \begin{align*} m_{Ω_b^-}-m_{Ξ_b^-} &= 247.4\pm3.2\pm0.5~{\rm MeV}/c^2, \\ m_{Ω_b^-} &= 6045.1\pm3.2\pm 0.5\pm0.6~{\rm MeV}/c^2. \end{align*} These results are consistent with previous measurements.

Measurement of the properties of the Ξb∗0Ξ_b^{*0} baryon

We perform a search for near-threshold Ξb0Ξ_b^0 resonances decaying to Ξb−π+Ξ_b^- π^+ in a sample of proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment. We observe one resonant state, with the following properties: \begin{eqnarray*} m(Ξ_b^{*0}) - m(Ξ_b^-) - m(π^+) &=& 15.727 \pm 0.068 \, (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.023 \, (\mathrm{syst}) \, \mathrm{MeV}/c^2, Γ(Ξ_b^{*0}) &=& 0.90 \pm 0.16 \, (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.08 \, (\mathrm{syst}) \, \mathrm{MeV} . \end{eqnarray*} This confirms the previous observation by the CMS collaboration. The state is consistent with the JP=3/2+J^P=3/2^+ Ξb∗0Ξ_b^{*0} resonance expected in the quark model. This is the most precise determination of the mass and the first measurement of the natural width of this state. We have also measured the ratio \begin{align*} \frac{σ(pp \to Ξ_b^{*0} X){\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^{*0} \to Ξ_b^- π^+)}{σ(pp \to Ξ_b^- X)} = 0.28 \pm 0.03 \, (\mathrm{stat}) \pm 0.01 \, (\mathrm{syst}) . \end{align*}

Measurements of long-range near-side angular correlations in sNN=5\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}=5TeV proton-lead collisions in the forward region

Two-particle angular correlations are studied in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of sNN=5\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}=5TeV, collected with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The analysis is based on data recorded in two beam configurations, in which either the direction of the proton or that of the lead ion is analysed. The correlations are measured in the laboratory system as a function of relative pseudorapidity, ΔηΔη, and relative azimuthal angle, ΔϕΔϕ, for events in different classes of event activity and for different bins of particle transverse momentum. In high-activity events a long-range correlation on the near side, Δϕ≈0Δϕ\approx 0, is observed in the pseudorapidity range 2.0<η<4.92.0<η<4.9. This measurement of long-range correlations on the near side in proton-lead collisions extends previous observations into the forward region up to η=4.9η=4.9. The correlation increases with growing event activity and is found to be more pronounced in the direction of the lead beam. However, the correlation in the direction of the lead and proton beams are found to be compatible when comparing events with similar absolute activity in the direction analysed.

Model-independent evidence for J/ψpJ/ψp contributions to Λb0→J/ψpK−Λ_b^0\to J/ψp K^- decays

The data sample of Λb0→J/ψpK−Λ_b^0\to J/ψp K^- decays acquired with the LHCb detector from 7 and 8~TeV pppp collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1^{-1}, is inspected for the presence of J/ψpJ/ψp or J/ψK−J/ψK^- contributions with minimal assumptions about K−pK^- p contributions. It is demonstrated at more than 9 standard deviations that Λb0→J/ψpK−Λ_b^0\to J/ψp K^- decays cannot be described with K−pK^- p contributions alone, and that J/ψpJ/ψp contributions play a dominant role in this incompatibility. These model-independent results support the previously obtained model-dependent evidence for Pc+→J/ψpP_c^+\to J/ψp charmonium-pentaquark states in the same data sample.

Associated production of bottomonia and open charm hadrons in pppp collisions at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 and 88TeV is observed using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3fb−1fb^{-1} accumulated with the LHCb detector. The observation of five combinations, Υ(1S)D0Υ(1S)D^0, Υ(2S)D0Υ(2S)D^0, Υ(1S)D+Υ(1S)D^+, Υ(2S)D+Υ(2S)D^+ and Υ(1S)Ds+Υ(1S)D^+_{s}, is reported. Study of the production of Λb0Λ_b^0 and B‾0\overline{B}^0 hadrons in pppp collisions and first measurement of the Λb0→J/ψpK−Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψpK^- branching fraction

The product of the Λb0Λ_b^0 (B‾0\overline{B}^0) differential production cross-section and the branching fraction of the decay Λb0→J/ψpK−Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψpK^- (B‾0→J/ψK‾∗(892)0\overline{B}^0\rightarrow J/ψ\overline{K}^*(892)^0) is measured as a function of the beauty hadron transverse momentum, pTp_{\rm T}, and rapidity, yy. The kinematic region of the measurements is pT<20 GeV/cp_{\rm T}<20~{\rm GeV}/c and 2.0<y<4.52.0<y<4.5. The measurements use a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−13~{\rm fb}^{-1} collected by the LHCb detector in pppp collisions at centre-of-mass energies s=7 TeV\sqrt{s}=7~{\rm TeV} in 2011 and s=8 TeV\sqrt{s}=8~{\rm TeV} in 2012. Based on previous LHCb results of the fragmentation fraction ratio, fΛB0/fdf_{Λ_B^0}/f_d, the branching fraction of the decay Λb0→J/ψpK−Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψpK^- is measured to be \begin{equation*} \mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψpK^-)= (3.17\pm0.04\pm0.07\pm0.34^{+0.45}_{-0.28})\times10^{-4}, \end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, the third is due to the uncertainty on the branching fraction of the decay B‾0→J/ψK‾∗(892)0\overline{B}^0\rightarrow J/ψ\overline{K}^*(892)^0, and the fourth is due to the knowledge of fΛb0/fdf_{Λ_b^0}/f_d. The sum of the asymmetries in the production and decay between Λb0Λ_b^0 and Λ‾b0\overlineΛ_b^0 is also measured as a function of pTp_{\rm T} and yy. The previously published branching fraction of Λb0→J/ψpπ−Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψpπ^-, relative to that of Λb0→J/ψpK−Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψpK^-, is updated. The branching fractions of Λb0→Pc+(→J/ψp)K−Λ_b^0\rightarrow P_c^+(\rightarrow J/ψp)K^- are determined.

Systematic investigation of projectile fragmentation using beams of unstable B and C isotopes

Background: Models describing nuclear fragmentation and fragmentation-fission deliver important input for planning nuclear physics experiments and future radioactive ion beam facilities. These models are usually benchmarked against data from stable beam experiments. In the future, two-step fragmentation reactions with exotic nuclei as stepping stones are a promising tool to reach the most neutron-rich nuclei, creating a need for models to describe also these reactions. Purpose: We want to extend the presently available data on fragmentation reactions towards the light exotic region on the nuclear chart. Furthermore, we want to improve the understanding of projectile fragmentation especially for unstable isotopes. Method: We have measured projectile fragments from 10,12-18C and 10-15B isotopes colliding with a carbon target. These measurements were all performed within one experiment, which gives rise to a very consistent dataset. We compare our data to model calculations. Results: One-proton removal cross sections with different final neutron numbers (1pxn) for relativistic 10,12-18C and 10-15B isotopes impinging on a carbon target. Comparing model calculations to the data, we find that EPAX is not able to describe the data satisfactorily. Using ABRABLA07 on the other hand, we find that the average excitation energy per abraded nucleon needs to be decreased from 27 MeV to 8.1 MeV. With that decrease ABRABLA07 describes the data surprisingly well. Conclusions: Extending the available data towards light unstable nuclei with a consistent set of new data have allowed for a systematic investigation of the role of the excitation energy induced in projectile fragmentation. Most striking is the apparent mass dependence of the average excitation energy per abraded nucleon. Nevertheless, this parameter, which has been related to final-state interactions, requires further study.

Evidence for the strangeness-changing weak decay Ξb−→Λb0π−Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-

Using a pppp collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0~fb−1^{-1}, collected by the LHCb detector, we present the first search for the strangeness-changing weak decay Ξb−→Λb0π−Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-. No bb hadron decay of this type has been seen before. A signal for this decay, corresponding to a significance of 3.2 standard deviations, is reported. The relative rate is measured to be fΞb−fΛb0B(Ξb−→Λb0π−)=(5.7±1.8−0.9+0.8)×10−4{f_{Ξ_b^-}\over{f_{Λ_b^0}}}{\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-) = (5.7\pm1.8^{+0.8}_{-0.9})\times10^{-4}, where fΞb−f_{Ξ_b^-} and fΛb0f_{Λ_b^0} are the b→Ξb−b\toΞ_b^- and b→Λb0b\toΛ_b^0 fragmentation fractions, and B(Ξb−→Λb0π−){\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-) is the branching fraction. Assuming fΞb−/fΛb0f_{Ξ_b^-}/f_{Λ_b^0} is bounded between 0.1 and 0.3, the branching fraction B(Ξb−→Λb0π−){\cal{B}}(Ξ_b^-\toΛ_b^0π^-) would lie in the range from (0.57±0.21)%(0.57\pm0.21)\% to (0.19±0.07)%(0.19\pm0.07)\%.

First measurement of the differential branching fraction and C ⁣PC\!P asymmetry of the B±→π±μ+μ−B^\pm\toπ^\pmμ^+μ^- decay

The differential branching fraction with respect to the dimuon invariant mass squared, and the C ⁣PC\!P asymmetry of the B±→π±μ+μ−B^\pm\toπ^\pmμ^+μ^- decay are measured for the first time. The CKM matrix elements ∣Vtd∣|V_{td}| and ∣Vts∣|V_{ts}|, and the ratio ∣Vtd/Vts∣|V_{td}/V_{ts}| are determined. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1^{-1}, collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The total branching fraction and C ⁣PC\!P asymmetry of B±→π±μ+μ−B^\pm\toπ^\pmμ^+μ^- decays are measured to be \begin{eqnarray} \mathcal{B}(B^\pm\toπ^\pmμ^+μ^-) &=& (1.83 \pm 0.24 \pm 0.05) \times 10^{-8}\,\,\,\mathrm{and} \nonumber\\ \mathcal{A}_{C\!P}(B^\pm\toπ^\pmμ^+μ^-) &=& -0.11 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.01\,, \nonumber \end{eqnarray} where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These are the most precise measurements of these observables to date, and they are compatible with the predictions of the Standard Model.

Measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry in Z/γ∗→μ+μ−Z/γ^{\ast} \rightarrow μ^{+}μ^{-} decays and determination of the effective weak mixing angle

The forward-backward charge asymmetry for the process qqˉ→Z/γ∗→μ+μ−q\bar{q} \rightarrow Z/γ^{\ast} \rightarrow μ^{+}μ^{-} is measured as a function of the invariant mass of the dimuon system. Measurements are performed using proton proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at s=7\sqrt{s} = 7 and 8\tev, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 11fb−1^{-1} and 22fb−1^{-1} respectively. Within the Standard Model the results constrain the effective electroweak mixing angle to be sin2θWeff=0.23142±0.00073±0.00052±0.00056sin^{2}θ_{W}^{eff} = 0.23142 \pm 0.00073 \pm 0.00052 \pm 0.00056 where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third theoretical. This result is in agreement with the current world average, and is one of the most precise determinations at hadron colliders to date.

Measurement of the time-integrated CPCP asymmetry in D0→KS0KS0D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S decays

The time-integrated CPCP asymmetry in the decay D0→KS0KS0D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S is measured using 3fb−13 fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The flavour of the D0D^0 meson is determined by use of the decay D∗+→D0π+D^{*+} \to D^0 π^+ and its charge conjugate mode. The result is ACP=−0.029±0.052±0.022, {\cal A}_{CP} = -0.029 \pm 0.052 \pm 0.022, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The result is consistent with Standard Model expectations and improves the uncertainty with respect to the only previous measurement of this quantity by more than a factor of three.

Search for the rare decays B0→J/ψγB^{0}\to J/ψγ and Bs0→J/ψγB^{0}_{s} \to J/ψγ

A search for the rare decay of a B0B^{0} or Bs0B^{0}_{s} meson into the final state J/ψγJ/ψγ is performed, using data collected by the LHCb experiment in pppp collisions at s=7\sqrt{s}=7 and 88 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 fb−1^{-1}. The observed number of signal candidates is consistent with a background-only hypothesis. Branching fraction values larger than 1.7×10−61.7\times 10^{-6} for the B0→J/ψγB^{0}\to J/ψγ decay mode are excluded at 90% confidence level. For the Bs0→J/ψγB^{0}_{s}\to J/ψγ decay mode, branching fraction values larger than 7.4×10−67.4\times 10^{-6} are excluded at 90% confidence level, this is the first branching fraction limit for this decay.

Performance of the LHCb Vertex Locator

The Vertex Locator (VELO) is a silicon microstrip detector that surrounds the proton-proton interaction region in the LHCb experiment. The performance of the detector during the first years of its physics operation is reviewed. The system is operated in vacuum, uses a bi-phase CO2 cooling system, and the sensors are moved to 7 mm from the LHC beam for physics data taking. The performance and stability of these characteristic features of the detector are described, and details of the material budget are given. The calibration of the timing and the data processing algorithms that are implemented in FPGAs are described. The system performance is fully characterised. The sensors have a signal to noise ratio of approximately 20 and a best hit resolution of 4 microns is achieved at the optimal track angle. The typical detector occupancy for minimum bias events in standard operating conditions in 2011 is around 0.5%, and the detector has less than 1% of faulty strips. The proximity of the detector to the beam means that the inner regions of the n+-on-n sensors have undergone space-charge sign inversion due to radiation damage. The VELO performance parameters that drive the experiment's physics sensitivity are also given. The track finding efficiency of the VELO is typically above 98% and the modules have been aligned to a precision of 1 micron for translations in the plane transverse to the beam. A primary vertex resolution of 13 microns in the transverse plane and 71 microns along the beam axis is achieved for vertices with 25 tracks. An impact parameter resolution of less than 35 microns is achieved for particles with transverse momentum greater than 1 GeV/c.

Implications of LHCb measurements and future prospects

During 2011 the LHCb experiment at CERN collected 1.0 fb-1 of sqrt{s} = 7 TeV pp collisions. Due to the large heavy quark production cross-sections, these data provide unprecedented samples of heavy flavoured hadrons. The first results from LHCb have made a significant impact on the flavour physics landscape and have definitively proved the concept of a dedicated experiment in the forward region at a hadron collider. This document discusses the implications of these first measurements on classes of extensions to the Standard Model, bearing in mind the interplay with the results of searches for on-shell production of new particles at ATLAS and CMS. The physics potential of an upgrade to the LHCb detector, which would allow an order of magnitude more data to be collected, is emphasised.

Nuclear astrophysics with radioactive ions at FAIR

The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process flow and r-process beta-decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will offer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. The high yield of radioactive isotopes, even far away from the valley of stability, allows the investigation of isotopes involved in processes as exotic as the r or rp processes.

Radiation damage in the LHCb Vertex Locator

The LHCb Vertex Locator (VELO) is a silicon strip detector designed to reconstruct charged particle trajectories and vertices produced at the LHCb interaction region. During the first two years of data collection, the 84 VELO sensors have been exposed to a range of fluences up to a maximum value of approximately 45×1012 1 MeV\rm{45 \times 10^{12}\,1\,MeV} neutron equivalent (1 MeV neq\rm{1\,MeV\,n_{eq}}). At the operational sensor temperature of approximately −7 ∘C-7\,^{\circ}\rm{C}, the average rate of sensor current increase is $18\,\upmu\rm{A}$ per fb−1\rm{fb^{-1}}, in excellent agreement with predictions. The silicon effective bandgap has been determined using current versus temperature scan data after irradiation, with an average value of Eg=1.16±0.03±0.04 eVE_{g}=1.16\pm0.03\pm0.04\,\rm{eV} obtained. The first observation of n-on-n sensor type inversion at the LHC has been made, occurring at a fluence of around 15×101215 \times 10 ^{12} of 1 MeV neq1\,\rm{MeV\,n_{eq}}. The only n-on-p sensors in use at the LHC have also been studied. With an initial fluence of approximately 3×1012 1 MeV neq\rm{3 \times 10^{12}\,1\,MeV\,n_{eq}}, a decrease in the Effective Depletion Voltage (EDV) of around 25\,V is observed, attributed to oxygen induced removal of boron interstitial sites. Following this initial decrease, the EDV increases at a comparable rate to the type inverted n-on-n type sensors, with rates of (1.43±0.16)×10−12 V/ 1 MeV neq(1.43\pm 0.16) \times 10 ^{-12}\,\rm{V} / \, 1 \, \rm{MeV\,n_{eq}} and (1.35±0.25)×10−12 V/ 1 MeV neq(1.35\pm 0.25) \times 10 ^{-12}\,\rm{V} / \, 1 \, \rm{MeV\,n_{eq}} measured for n-on-p and n-on-n type sensors, respectively. A reduction in the charge collection efficiency due to an unexpected effect involving the second metal layer readout lines is observed.

Neutron-skin thickness from the study of the anti-analog giant dipole resonance

The gamma-decay of the anti-analog of the giant dipole resonance (AGDR) has been measured to the isobaric analog state excited in the p(124Sn,n) reaction at a beam energy of 600 MeV/nucleon. The energy of the transition was also calculated with state-of-the-art self-consistent random-phase approximation (RPA) and turned out to be very sensitive to the neutron-skin thickness (\DeltaR_(pn)). By comparing the theoretical results with the measured one, the \DeltaR_(pn) value for 124Sn was deduced to be 0.175 \pm 0.048 fm, which agrees well with the previous results. The energy of the AGDR measured previously for ^(208)Pb was also used to determine the \DeltaR_(pn) for ^(208)Pb. In this way a very precise \DeltaR_(pn) = 0.181 \pm 0.031 neutron-skin thickness has been obtained for 208Pb. The present method offers new possibilities for measuring the neutron-skin thicknesses of very exotic isotopes.
