Ponderomotive forces in electrodynamics of moving media: The Minkowski and Abraham approaches

In the general setting of the problem, the explicit compact formulae are derived for the ponderomotive forces in the macroscopic electrodynamics of moving media in the Minkowski and Abraham approaches. Taking account of the Minkowski constitutive equations and making use of a special representation for the Abraham energy-momentum tensor enable one to obtain a compact expression for the Abraham force in the case of arbitrary dependence of the medium velocity on spatial coordinates and the time and for nonstationary external electromagnetic field. We term the difference between the ponderomotive forces in the Abraham and Minkowski approaches as the Abraham force not only under consideration of media at rest but also in the case of moving media. The Lorentz force is found which is exerted by external electromagnetic field on the conduction current in a medium, the covariant Ohm law and the constitutive Minkowski relations being taken into account. The physical argumentation is traced for definition of the 4-vector of the ponderomotive force as the 4-divergence of the energy-momentum tensor of electromagnetic field in a medium.

Symmetric energy-momentum tensor: The Abraham form and the explicitly covariant formula

We compare the known in literature, explicitly covariant 4-dimensional formula for the symmetric energy-momentum tensor of electromagnetic field in a medium and the energy-momentum tensor derived by Abraham in the 3-dimensional vector form. It is shown that these two objects coincide only on the physical configuration space $\overlineΓ$, formed by the field vectors and the velocity of the medium, which satisfy the Minkowski constitutive relations. It should be emphasized that the 3-dimensional vector formulae for the components of the energy-momentum tensor were obtained by Abraham only on $\overlineΓ$, and the task of their extension to the whole unconditional configuration space $Γ$ was not posed. In order to accomplish the comparison noted above we derive the covariant formula anew by another method, namely, by generalizing the Abraham reasoning. The comparison conducted enables one to treat the explicitly covariant formula as a unique consistent extension of the Abraham formulae to the whole configuration space $Γ$. Thus the question concerning the relativistic covariance of the original 3-dimensional Abraham formulae defined on $\overlineΓ$ is solved positively. We discuss in detail the relativistic covariance of the 3-dimensional vector formulae for individual components of the 4-dimensional tensors in electrodynamics which is manifested in the form-invariance of these formulae under Lorentz transformations.

Macroscopic approach to the Casimir friction force

The general formula is derived for the vacuum friction force between two parallel perfectly flat planes bounding two material media separated by a vacuum gap and moving relative to each other with a constant velocity $\mathbf{v}$. The material media are described in the framework of macroscopic electrodynamics whereas the nonzero temperature and dissipation are taken into account by making use of the Kubo formulae from non-equilibrium statistical thermodynamics. The formula obtained provides a rigorous basis for calculation of the vacuum friction force within the quantum field theory methods in the condensed matter physics. The revealed $v$-dependence of the vacuum friction force proves to be the following: for zero temperature ($T=0$) it is proportional to $(v/c)^3$ and for $T>0$ this force is linear in $(v/c)$.

Lifshitz formula by spectral summation method

The Lifshitz formula is derived by making use of the spectral summation method which is a mathematically rigorous simultaneous application of both the mode-by-mode summation technique and scattering formalism. The contributions to the Casimir energy of electromagnetic excitations of different types (surface modes, waveguide modes, and photonic modes) are clearly retraced. A correct transition to imaginary frequencies is accomplished with allowance for all the peculiarities of the frequency equations and pertinent scattering data in the complex $ω$ plane, including, in particular, the cuts connecting the branch points and complex roots of the frequency equations (quasi-normal modes). The principal novelty of our approach is a special choice of appropriate passes in the contour integrals, which are used for transition to imaginary frequencies. As a result, the long standing problem of cuts in the complex $ω$ plane is solved completely. Inconsistencies of some previous derivations of the Lifshitz formula are traced briefly. For completeness of the presentation, the necessary mathematical facts are also stated, namely, solution of the Maxwell equations for configurations under consideration, scattering formalism for parallel plane interfaces, determination of the frequency equation roots, and others.

Vacuum energy in conical space with additional boundary conditions

Total vacuum energy of some quantized fields in conical space with additional boundary conditions is calculated. These conditions are imposed on a cylindrical surface which is coaxial with the symmetry axis of conical space. The explicit form of the matching conditions depends on the field under consideration. In the case of electromagnetic field, the perfectly conducting boundary conditions or isorefractive matching conditions are imposed on the cylindrical surface. For a massless scalar field, the semi-transparent conditions ($δ$-potential) on the cylindrical shell are investigated. As a result, the total Casimir energy of electromagnetic field and scalar field, per a unit length along the symmetry axis, proves to be finite unlike the case of an infinitely thin cosmic string. In these studies the spectral zeta functions are widely used. It is shown briefly how to apply this technique for obtaining the asymptotics of the relevant thermodynamical functions in the high temperature limit.

Electromagnetic shape resonances of a dielectric sphere and radiation of portable telephones

The frequency band used by cellular telephones includes the eigenfrequencies of a dielectric sphere with physical characteristics close to those of a human head. Proceeding from the spatial features of the natural modes of such a sphere we propose an independent and clear evident accuracy test for the complicated numerical calculations which are conducted when estimating the potential hazard due to the use of cellular telephones, in particular, for the check of a proper handling of the electromagnetic shape resonances of a human head.

Casimir energy of a compact cylinder under the condition $εμ= c^{-2}$

The Casimir energy of an infinite compact cylinder placed in a uniform unbounded medium is investigated under the continuity condition for the light velocity when crossing the interface. As a characteristic parameter in the problem the ratio $ξ^2=(ε_1-ε_2)^2/ (ε_1+ε_2)^-2 = (μ_1-μ_2)^2/(μ_1+ μ_2)^2 \le 1$ is used, where $ε_1$ and $μ_1$ are, respectively, the permittivity and permeability of the material making up the cylinder and $ε_2$ and $μ_2$ are those for the surrounding medium. It is shown that the expansion of the Casimir energy in powers of this parameter begins with the term proportional to $ξ^4$. The explicit formulas permitting us to find numerically the Casimir energy for any fixed value of $ξ^2$ are obtained. Unlike a compact ball with the same properties of the materials, the Casimir forces in the problem under consideration are attractive. The implication of the calculated Casimir energy in the flux tube model of confinement is briefly discussed.

Classical dynamics of rigid string from Willmore functional

A new approach for investigating the classical dynamics of the relativistic string model with rigidity is proposed. It is based on the embedding of the string world surface into the space of a constant curvature. It is shown that the rigid string in flat space-time is described by the Euler-Lagrange equation for the Willmore functional in a space-time of the constant curvature K=-g/(2 a), where g and a are constants in front of the Nambu-Goto term and the curvature term in the rigid string action respectively. For simplicity the Euclidean version of the rigid string in the three-dimensional space-time is considered. The Willmore functional (the action for the "Willmore string") is obtained by dropping the Nambu-Goto term in the Polyakov-Kleinert action for the rigid string. Such "reduction" of the rigid string model would be useful, for example, by applying some results about the Numbu-Goto string dynamics in the de Sitter universe to the rigid string model in the Minkowski space-time. It allows also to use numerous mathematical results about the Willmore surfaces in the context of the physical problem.
