Hidden magnetic order on a kagome lattice for KV3Sb5

KV3Sb5 has recently attracted a considerable attention, due to its low temperature superconducting properties, which are heralded by a charge density wave. The apparent presence of a very weak magnetism does not result in long range ordering. We propose a model compatible with a detectable internal magnetic field with no evidence of magnetic long-range order. It invokes higher order terms in the vanadium magnetization density compatible with the presence of a "hidden order" of Dirac (polar) multipoles. The Dirac dipole, known as an anapole or toroidal dipole, is one of a family of electronic multipoles visible in x-ray and magnetic neutron diffraction while undetectable with standard laboratory-based techniques. Two plausible hidden orders are studied with a view to testing in future x-ray and neutron Bragg diffraction experiments whether they are trustworthy. One candidate is magneto-electric and restricted to the linear type, while the other candidate cannot show a magneto-electric effect of any type. The latter hosts a vanadium entity that is both a true scalar and magnetic, and its presence epitomizes an absence of loop currents. Diffraction patterns for the two proposed hidden magnetic orders are distinctly different, fortunately. Corresponding scattering amplitudes for resonant x-ray and neutron Bragg diffraction are calculated with standard chemical and magnetic symmetry tools, and atomic physics.

Coherent Acoustic Perturbation of Second-Harmonic-Generation in NiO

We investigate the structural and magnetic origins of the unusual ultrafast second-harmonicgeneration (SHG) response of femtosecond-laser-excited nickel oxide (NiO) previously attributed to oscillatory reorientation dynamics of the magnetic structure induced by d-d excitations. Using time-resolved x-ray diffraction from the (3/2 3/2 3/2) magnetic planes, we show that changes in the magnitude of the magnetic structure factor following ultrafast optical excitation are limited to $Δ<F_m>/<F_m>$ = 1.5% in the first 30 ps. An extended investigation of the ultrafast SHG response reveals a strong dependence on wavelength as well as characteristic echoes, both of which give evidence for an acoustic origin of the dynamics. We therefore propose an alternative mechanism for the SHG response based on perturbations of the nonlinear susceptibility via optically induced strain in a spatially confined medium. In this model, the two observed oscillation periods can be understood as the times required for an acoustic strain wave to traverse one coherence length of the SHG process in either the collinear or anti-collinear geometries.

Multiferroic properties of o-LuMnO$_3$ controlled by b-axis strain

Strain is a leading candidate for controlling magnetoelectric coupling in multiferroics. Here, we use x-ray diffraction to study the coupling between magnetic order and structural distortion in epitaxial films of the orthorhombic (o-) perovskite LuMnO$_3$. An antiferromagnetic spin canting in the E-type magnetic structure is shown to be related to the ferroelectrically induced structural distortion and to a change in the magnetic propagation vector. By comparing films of different orientations and thicknesses, these quantities are found to be controlled by b-axis strain. It is shown that compressive strain destabilizes the commensurate E-type structure and reduces its accompanying ferroelectric distortion.

Charge ordering transition in GdBaCo2O5: evidence of reentrant behavior

We present a detailed study on the charge ordering (CO) transition in GdBaCo2O5 system by combining high resolution synchrotron powder/single crystal diffraction with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments as a function of temperature. We found a second order structural phase transition at TCO=247 K (Pmmm to Pmma) associated with the onset of long range CO. At Tmin = 1.2TCO, the EPR linewidth rapidly broadens providing evidence of spin fluctuations due to magnetic interactions between Gd3+ ions and antiferromagnetic couplings of Co2+/Co3+ sublattices. This likely indicates that, analogously to manganites, the long-range antiferromagnetic order in GdBaCo2O5 sets in at TCO. Pair distribution function (PDF) analysis of diffraction data revealed signatures of structural inhomogeneities at low temperature. By comparing the average and local bond valences, we found that above TCO the local structure is consistent with a fully random occupation of Co2+ and Co3+ in a 1:1 ratio and with a complete charge ordering below TCO. Below T = 100 K the charge localization is partially melted at the local scale, suggesting a reentrant behavior of CO. This result is supported by the weakening of superstructure reflections and the temperature evolution of EPR linewidth that is consistent with paramagnetic (PM) reentrant behavior reported in the GdBaCo2O5.5 parent compound.

Chiral properties of hematite (α-Fe2O3) inferred from resonant Bragg diffraction using circularly polarized x-rays

Chiral properties of the two phases - collinear motif (below Morin transition temperature, TM=250 K) and canted motif (above TM) - of magnetically ordered hematite (α-Fe2O3) have been identified in single crystal resonant x-ray Bragg diffraction, using circular polarized incident x-rays tuned near the iron K-edge. Magneto-electric multipoles, including an anapole, fully characterize the high-temperature canted phase, whereas the low-temperature collinear phase supports both parity-odd and parity-even multipoles that are time-odd. Orbital angular momentum accompanies the collinear motif, while it is conspicuously absent with the canted motif. Intensities have been successfully confronted with analytic expressions derived from an atomic model fully compliant with chemical and magnetic structures. Values of Fe atomic multipoles previously derived from independent experimental data, are shown to be completely trustworthy.

Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya driven helical-butterfly structure in Ba3NbFe3Si2O14

We have used soft x-ray magnetic diffraction at the Fe3+ L2,3 edges to examine to what extent the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction in Ba3NbFe3Si2O14 influences its low temperature magnetic structure. A modulated component of the moments along the c-axis is present, adding to the previously proposed helical magnetic configuration of co-planar moments in the a,b-plane. This leads to a helical-butterfly structure and suggests that both the multi-axial in-plane and the uniform out-of-plane Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya vectors are relevant. A non zero orbital magnetic signal is also observed at the oxygen K edge, which reflects the surprisingly strong hybridization between iron 3d and oxygen 2p states, given the nominal spherical symmetry of the Fe3+ half filled shell.

Phase competitions in epitaxial Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$/La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ superlattices

We studied the charge-orbital ordering in the superlattice of charge-ordered insulating Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ and ferromagnetic metallic La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ by resonant soft x-ray diffraction. A temperature-dependent incommensurability is found in the orbital order. In addition, a large hysteresis is observed that is caused by phase competition between insulating charge ordered and metallic ferromagnetic states. No magnetic phase transitions are observed in contrast to bulk, confirming the unique character of the superlattice. The deviation from the commensurate orbital order can be directly related to the decrease of ordered-layer thickness that leads to a decoupling of the orbital-ordered planes along the c axis.

Imprinting magnetic information in manganites with X-rays

The effect of x-rays on an orbital and charge ordered epitaxial film of a Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ is presented. As the film is exposed to x-rays, the antiferromagnetic response increases and concomitantly the conductivity of the film improve. These results are discussed in terms of a persistent x-ray induced doping, leading to a modification of the magnetic structure. This effect allows writing electronic and magnetic domains in the film and represents a novel way of manipulating magnetism.

Femtosecond dynamics of the collinear-to-spiral antiferromagnetic phase transition in CuO

We report on the ultrafast dynamics of magnetic order in a single crystal of CuO at a temperature of 207 K in response to strong optical excitation using femtosecond resonant x-ray diffraction. In the experiment, a femtosecond laser pulse induces a sudden, nonequilibrium increase in magnetic disorder. After a short delay ranging from 400 fs to 2 ps, we observe changes in the relative intensity of the magnetic ordering diffraction peaks that indicate a shift from a collinear commensurate phase to a spiral incommensurate phase. These results indicate that the ultimate speed for this antiferromagnetic re-orientation transition in CuO is limited by the long-wavelength magnetic excitation connecting the two phases.

Origin of the large polarization in multiferroic YMnO$_3$ thin films revealed by soft and hard x-ray diffraction

We investigated the magnetic structure of an orthorhombic YMnO3 thin film by resonant soft x-ray and hard x-ray diffraction. We observed a temperature-dependent incommensurate magnetic reflection below 45 K and a commensurate lattice-distortion reflection below 35 K. These results demonstrate that the ground state is composed of coexisting E-type and cycloidal states. Their different ordering temperatures clarify the origin of the large polarization to be caused by the E-type antiferromagnetic states in the orthorhombic YMnO3 thin film.

Triakontadipole and high-order dysprosium multipoles in the antiferromagnetic phase of DyB$_2$C$_2$

Resonant soft x-ray Bragg diffraction at the Dy M$_{4,5}$ edges has been used to study Dy multipoles in the combined magnetic and orbitally ordered phase of DyB$_2$C$_2$. The analysis incorporates both the intra-atomic magnetic and quadrupolar interactions between the 3d core and 4f valence shells. Additionally, we introduce to the formalism the interference of magnetic and nonmagnetic oscillators. This allows a determination of the higher order multipole moments of rank 1 (dipole) to 6 (hexacontatetrapole). The strength of the Dy 4f multipole moments have been estimated at being between 7 and 78 % of the quadrupolar moment.

Doping and temperature dependence of Mn 3d states in A-site ordered manganites

We present a systematic study of the electronic structure in A-site ordered manganites as function of doping and temperature. The energy dependencies observed with soft x-ray resonant diffraction (SXRD) at the Mn L_{2,3} edges are compared with structural investigations using neutron powder diffraction as well as with cluster calculations. The crystal structures obtained with neutron powder diffraction reflect the various orbital and charge ordered phases and show an increase of the Mn-O-Mn bond angle as function of doping and temperature. Cluster calculations show that the observed spectral changes in SXRD as a function of doping are more pronounced than expected from an increase in bandwitdh due to the increase in Mn-O-Mn bond angle, and are best described by holes that are distributed at the neighbouring oxygen ions. These holes are not directly added to the Mn 3d shell, but centered at the Mn site. In contrast, the spectral changes in SXRD as function of temperature are best described by an increase of magnetic correlations. This demonstrates the strong correlations between orbitals and magnetic moments of the 3d states.

Direct observation of charge order and orbital glass state in multiferroic LuFe2O4

Geometrical frustration of the Fe ions in LuFe2O4 leads to intricate charge and magnetic order and a strong magnetoelectric coupling. Using resonant x-ray diffraction at the Fe K edge, the anomalous scattering factors of both Fe sites are deduced from the (h/3 k/3 l/2) reflections. The chemical shift between the two types of Fe ions equals 4.0(1) eV corresponding to full charge separation into Fe2+ and Fe3+. Polarization and azimuthal angle dependence of the superlattice reflections demonstrates the absence of anisotropic scattering revealing random orientations of the Fe2+ orbitals characteristic of an orbital glass state.

Experimental evidence of anapolar moments in the antiferromagnetic insulating phase of V2O3 obtained from x-ray resonant Bragg diffraction

We have investigated the antiferromagnetic insulating phase of the Mott-Hubbard insulator V$_2$O$_3$ by resonant x-ray Bragg diffraction at the vanadium K-edge. Combining the information obtained from azimuthal angle scans, linear incoming polarization scans and by fitting collected data to the scattering amplitude derived from the established chemical I2/a and magnetic space groups we provide evidence of the ordering motif of anapolar moments (which results from parity violation coupling to an electromagnetic field). Experimental data (azimuthal dependence and polarization analysis) collected at space-group forbidden Bragg reflections are successfully accounted within our model in terms of vanadium magnetoelectric multipoles. We demonstrate that resonant x-ray diffraction intensities in all space-group forbidden Bragg reflections of the kind $(hkl)_m$ with odd $h$ are produced by an E1-E2 event. The determined tensorial parameters offer a test for ab-initio calculations in this material, that can lead to a deeper and more quantitative understanding of the physical properties of V$_2$O$_3$.
