Antiferromagnetic resonances in twinned EuFe2As2 single crystal

In this work, we report ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy of EuFe2As2 single crystals. We observe ferromagnetic resonance responses, which are attributed to antiferromagnetic resonances of Eu sub-lattice with orthorhombic crystal structure and with different orientations of twin domains relative to the external field. We confirm validity of the recently-proposed spin Hamiltonian with anisotropic Eu-Eu exchange interaction and biquadratic Eu-Fe exchange interaction.

Exchange spin waves in thin films with gradient composition

We report investigation of ferromagnetic resonance phenomenon in ferromagnetic thin films with essentially non-uniform composition. Epitaxial Pd-Fe thin film with linear distribution of Fe content across the thickness is used as the model material. Anomalous perpendicular standing spin waves are observed and quantified using the collective dynamic equation. Numerical analysis yields the exchange stiffness constant for diluted Pd-Fe alloy $D=2A/μ_0M_s=15$~T$\cdot$nm$^2$ and the ratio of the effective magnetization to the saturation magnetization $M_{eff}/M_s=1.16$. It is demonstrated that, overall, engineering of thin films with non-uniform composition across the thickness can be used for high-frequency or low-field magnonic operations using exchange spin waves.

Magnetic resonances in EuSn$_2$As$_2$ single crystal

In this work, we report the broad-band ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy of EuSn$_2$As$_2$ single crystals at different temperatures in combination with magnetization measurements and structural characterization. We observe conventional collective acoustic resonance mode of the A-type antiferromagnetic spin-flop phase in the Eu sub-lattice, and its transition to the paramagnetic resonance above the ordering temperature. Furthermore, we observe reproducibly additional well-defined spectral line. The origin of the additional line remains unclear. However, its temperature dependence attributes it to magnetism in the Eu sub-lattice.

Magnetization dynamics in proximity-coupled superconductor/ferromagnet/superconductor multilayers

In this work, magnetization dynamics is studied in superconductor/ferromagnet/superconductor three-layered films in a wide frequency, field, and temperature ranges using the broad-band ferromagnetic resonance measurement technique. It is shown that in presence of both superconducting layers and of superconducting proximity at both superconductor/ferromagnet interfaces a massive shift of the ferromagnetic resonance to higher frequencies emerges. The phenomenon is robust and essentially long-range: it has been observed for a set of samples with the thickness of ferromagnetic layer in the range from tens up to hundreds of nanometers. The resonance frequency shift is characterized by proximity-induced magnetic anisotropies: by the positive in-plane uniaxial anisotropy and by the drop of magnetization. The shift and the corresponding uniaxial anisotropy grow with the thickness of the ferromagnetic layer. For instance, the anisotropy reaches 0.27~T in experiment for a sample with 350~nm thick ferromagnetic layer, and about 0.4~T in predictions, which makes it a ferromagnetic film structure with the highest anisotropy and the highest natural resonance frequency ever reported. Various scenarios for the superconductivity-induced magnetic anisotropy are discussed. As a result, the origin of the phenomenon remains unclear. Application of the proximity-induced anisotropies in superconducting magnonics is proposed as a way for manipulations with a spin-wave spectrum.

Spectroscopic evidence for strong correlations between local superconducting gap and local Altshuler-Aronov density-of-states suppression in ultrathin NbN films

Disorder has different profound effects on superconducting thin films. For a large variety of materials, increasing disorder reduces electronic screening which enhances electron-electron repulsion. These fermionic effects lead to a mechanism described by Finkelstein: when disorder combined to electron-electron interactions increases, there is a global decrease of the superconducting energy gap $Δ$ and of the critical temperature $T_c$, the ratio $Δ$/$k_BT_c$ remaining roughly constant. In addition, in most films an emergent granularity develops with increasing disorder and results in the formation of inhomogeneous superconducting puddles. These gap inhomogeneities are usually accompanied by the development of bosonic features: a pseudogap develops above the critical temperature $T_c$ and the energy gap $Δ$ starts decoupling from $T_c$. Thus the mechanism(s) driving the appearance of these gap inhomogeneities could result from a complicated interplay between fermionic and bosonic effects. By studying the local electronic properties of a NbN film with scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) we show that the inhomogeneous spatial distribution of $Δ$ is locally strongly correlated to a large depletion in the local density of states (LDOS) around the Fermi level, associated to the Altshuler-Aronov effect induced by strong electronic interactions. By modelling quantitatively the measured LDOS suppression, we show that the latter can be interpreted as local variations of the film resistivity. This local change in resistivity leads to a local variation of $Δ$ through a local Finkelstein mechanism. Our analysis furnishes a purely fermionic scenario explaining quantitatively the emergent superconducting inhomogeneities, while the precise origin of the latter remained unclear up to now.

Detection of small exchange fields in S/F structures

Ferromagnetic materials with exchange fields E_ex smaller or of the order of the superconducting gap Delta are important for applications of corresponding (s-wave) superconductor/ ferromagnet/ superconductor (SFS) junctions. Presently such materials are not known but there are several proposals how to create them. Small exchange fields are in principle difficult to detect. Based on our results we propose reliable detection methods of such small E_ex. For exchange fields smaller than the superconducting gap the subgap differential conductance of the normal metal - ferromagnet - insulator - superconductor (NFIS) junction shows a peak at the voltage bias equal to the exchange field of the ferromagnetic layer, eV=E_ex. Thus measuring the subgap conductance one can reliably determine small E_ex < Delta. In the opposite case E_ex > Delta one can determine the exchange field in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiment. The density of states of the FS bilayer measured at the outer border of the ferromagnet shows a peak at the energy equal to the exchange field, E=E_ex. This peak can be only visible for small enough exchange fields of the order of few Delta.

Surface states in a 3D topological insulator: The role of hexagonal warping and curvature

We explore a combined effect of hexagonal warping and of finite effective mass on both the tunneling density of electronic states (TDOS) and structure of Landau levels (LLs) of 3D topological insulators. We find the increasing warping to transform the square-root van Hove singularity into a logarithmic one. For moderate warping an additional logarithmic singularity and a jump in the TDOS appear. This phenomenon is experimentally verified by direct measurements of the local TDOS in Bi$_2$Te$_3$. By combining the perturbation theory and the WKB approximation we calculate the LLs in the presence of hexagonal warping. We predict that due to the degeneracy removal the evolution of LLs in the magnetic field is drastically modified.

Ferromagnetic Josephson switching device with high characteristic voltage

We develop a fast Magnetic Josephson Junction (MJJ) - a superconducting ferromagnetic device for a scalable high-density cryogenic memory compatible in speed and fabrication with energy-efficient Single Flux Quantum (SFQ) circuits. We present experimental results for Superconductor-Insulator-Ferromagnet-Superconductor (SIFS) MJJs with high characteristic voltage IcRn of >700 uV proving their applicability for superconducting circuits. By applying magnetic field pulses, the device can be switched between MJJ logic states. The MJJ IcRn product is only ~30% lower than that of conventional junction co-produced in the same process, allowing for integration of MJJ-based and SIS-based ultra-fast digital SFQ circuits operating at tens of gigahertz.
