Electronic and magnetic properties of off-stoichiometric Co2_\mathrm{2}Mnβ_βSi/MgO interfaces studied by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism

We have studied the electronic and magnetic states of Co and Mn atoms at the interface of the Co2_\mathrm{2}Mnβ_βSi (CMS)/MgO (ββ=0.69, 0.99, 1.15 and 1.29) magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) by means of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. In particular, the Mn composition (ββ) dependences of the Mn and Co magnetic moments were investigated. The experimental spin magnetic moments of Mn, mspinm_\mathrm{spin}(Mn), derived from XMCD weakly decreased with increasing Mn composition ββ in going from Mn-deficient to Mn-rich CMS films. This behavior was explained by first-principles calculations based on the antisite-based site-specific formula unit (SSFU) composition model, which assumes the formation of only antisite defect, not vacancies, to accommodate off-stoichiometry. Furthermore, the experimental spin magnetic moments of Co, mspinm_\mathrm{spin}(Co), also weakly decreased with increasing Mn composition. This behavior was consistently explained by the antisite-based SSFU model, in particular, by the decrease in the concentration of CoMn_\mathrm{Mn} antisites detrimental to the half-metallicity of CMS with increasing ββ. This finding is consistent with the higher TMR ratios which have been observed for CMS/MgO/CMS MTJs with Mn-rich CMS electrodes.

Thickness-dependent magnetic properties and strain-induced orbital magnetic moment in SrRuO3 thin films

Thin films of the ferromagnetic metal SrRuO3 (SRO) show a varying easy magnetization axis depending on the epitaxial strain and undergo a metal-to-insulator transition with decreasing film thickness. We have investigated the magnetic properties of SRO thin films with varying thicknesses fabricated on SrTiO3(001) substrates by soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the Ru M2,3 edge. Results have shown that, with decreasing film thickness, the film changes from ferromagnetic to non-magnetic around 3monolayer thickness, consistent with previous magnetization and magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements. The orbital magnetic moment perpendicular to the film was found to be ~ 0.1μB/Ru atom, and remained nearly unchanged with decreasing film thickness while the spin magnetic moment decreases. Mechanism for the formation of the orbital magnetic moment is discussed based on the electronic structure of the compressively strained SRO film.

Enhanced ferromagnetic moment in Co-doped BiFeO3 thin films studied by soft X-ray circular dichroism

BiFeO3_3 (BFO) shows both ferroelectricity and magnetic ordering at room temperature but its ferromagnetic component, which is due to spin canting, is negligible. Substitution of transition-metal atoms such as Co for Fe is known to enhance the ferromagnetic component in BFO. In order to reveal the origin of such magnetization enhancement, we performed soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) studies of BiFe1−x_{1-x}Cox_xO3_3 ({\it x} = 0 to 0.30) (BFCO) thin films grown on LaAlO3_3(001) substrates. The XAS results indicated that the Fe and Co ions are in the Fe3+^{3+} and Co3+^{3+} states. The XMCD results showed that the Fe ions show ferromagnetism while the Co ions are antiferromagnetic at room temperature. The XAS and XMCD measurements also revealed that part of the Fe3+^{3+} ions are tetrahedrally co-ordinated by oxygen ions but that the XMCD signals of the octahedrally coordinated Fe3+^{3+} ions increase with Co content. The results suggest that an impurity phase such as the ferrimagnetic γγ-Fe2_2O3_3 which exists at low Co concentration decreases with increasing Co concentration and that the ferromagnetic component of the Fe3+^{3+} ion in the octrahedral crystal fields increases with Co concentration, probably reflecting the increased canting of the Fe3+^{3+} ions.

Orbital magnetic moment and coercivity of SiO2_{2}-coated FePt nanoparticles studied by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism

We have investigated the spin and orbital magnetic moments of Fe in FePt nanoparticles in the LL10_{0}-ordered phase coated with SiO2_{2} by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the Fe L2,3L_{\rm 2,3} absorption edges. Using XMCD sum rules, we evaluated the ratio of the orbital magnetic moment (MorbM_{\rm orb}) to the spin magnetic moment (MspinM_{\rm spin}) of Fe to be Morb/MspinM_{\rm orb}/M_{\rm spin} = 0.08. This Morb/MspinM_{\rm orb}/M_{\rm spin} value is comparable to the value (0.09) obtained for FePt nanoparticles prepared by gas phase condensation, and is larger than the values (∼\sim0.05) obtained for FePt thin films, indicating a high degree of LL10_{0} order. The hysteretic behavior of the FePt component of the magnetization was measured by XMCD. The magnetic coercivity (HcH_{\rm c}) was found to be as large as 1.8 T at room temperature, ∼\sim3 times larger than the thin film value and ∼\sim50 times larger than that of the gas phase condensed nanoparticles. The hysteresis curve is well explained by the Stoner-Wohlfarth model for non-interacting single-domain nanoparticles with the HcH_{\rm c} distributed from 1 T to 5 T.

Role of doped Ru in coercivity-enhanced La0.6_{0.6}Sr0.4MnO_{0.4}MnO_3$ thin film studied by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism

The coercivity of La1−x_{1-x}Srx_xMnO3_3 thin films can be enhanced by Ru substitution for Mn. In order to elucidate its mechanism, we performed soft x-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism measurements at the Ru M2,3_{2,3} and Mn L2,3_{2,3} edges. We found that the spin direction of Ru and Mn are opposite and that Ru has a finite orbital magnetic moment. Cluster-model analysis indicated that the finite orbital magnetic moment as well as the reduced spin moment of Ru result from local lattice distortion caused by epitaxial strain from the SrTiO3_3 substrate in the presence of spin-orbit interaction.

Electronic configuration of Mn ions in the ππ-d molecular ferromagnet ββ-Mn phthalocyanine studied by soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism

We have studied the electronic structure of the molecular ferromagnet ββ-Mn phthalocyanine (ββ-MnPc) in a polycrystalline form, which has been reported to show ferromagnetism at T<<8.6 K, by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). From the experimental results and subsequent cluster-model calculation, we find that the ferromagnetic Mn ion in ββ-MnPc is largely in the 4^4EEg_g ground state arising from the (eeg_{g})3^3(bb2g_{2g})1^1(aa1g_{1g})1^1 [(dxz,yzd_{xz,yz})3^3(dxyd_{xy})1^1(dz2d_{z^{2}})1^1] configuration of the Mn2+^{2+} state. Considering that the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of MnPc with the 4^4EEg_g ground state originates from the aa1g_{1g} orbital of the Mn2+^{2+} ion, it is proposed that aa1g_{1g}-aa1g_{1g} exchange coupling via the ππ orbitals of the phthalocyanine ring plays a crucial role in the ferromagnetism of ββ-MnPc.

X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism studies of transition-metal-co-doped ZnO nano-particles

We report on x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) studies of the paramagnetic (Mn,Co)-co-doped ZnO and ferromagnetic (Fe,Co)-co-doped ZnO nano-particles. Both the surface-sensitive total-electron-yield mode and the bulk-sensitive total-fluorescence-yield mode have been employed to extract the valence and spin states of the surface and inner core regions of the nano-particles. XAS spectra reveal that significant part of the doped Mn and Co atoms are found in the trivalent and tetravalent state in particular in the surface region while majority of Fe atoms are found in the trivalent state both in the inner core region and surface region. The XMCD spectra show that the Fe3+^{3+} ions in the surface region give rise to the ferromagnetism while both the Co and Mn ions in the surface region show only paramagnetic behaviors. The transition-metal atoms in the inner core region do not show magnetic signals, meaning that they are antiferromagnetically coupled. The present result combined with the previous results on transition-metal-doped ZnO nano-particles and nano-wires suggest that doped holes, probably due to Zn vacancy formation at the surfaces of the nano-particles and nano-wires, rather than doped electrons are involved in the occurrence of ferromagnetism in these systems.

Bulk and Surface Magnetization of Co atoms in Rutile Ti_[1-x]Co_xO_[2-delta] Thin Films Revealed by X-Ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism

We have studied magnetism in Ti_[1-x]Co_xO_[2-δ] thin films with various x and δby soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the Co L_[2,3] absorption edges. The estimated ferromagnetic moment by XMCD was 0.15-0.24 μβ/Co in the surface, while in the bulk it was 0.82-2.25 μβ/Co, which is in the same range as the saturation magnetization of 1.0-1.5 μβ/Co. Theseresults suggest that the intrinsic origin of the erromagnetism. The smaller moment of Co atom at surface is an indication of a magnetically dead layer of a few nm thick at the surface of the thin films.

Effect of co-doping of donor and acceptor impurities in the ferromagnetic semiconductor Zn1-xCrxTe studied by soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism

We have performed x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) studies of the diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor Zn1−x_{1-\textit{x}}Crx_\textit{x}Te doped with iodine (I) or nitrogen (N), corresponding to electron or hole doping, respectively. From the shape of the Cr 2p2p absorption peak in the XAS spectra, it was concluded that Cr ions in the undoped, I-doped and lightly N-doped samples are divalent (Cr2+^{2+}), while Cr2+^{2+} and trivalent (Cr3+^{3+}) coexist in the heavily N-doped sample. This result indicates that the doped nitrogen atoms act as acceptors but that doped holes are located on the Cr ions. In the magnetic-field dependence of the XMCD signal at the Cr 2p2p absorption edge, ferromagnetic behaviors were observed in the undoped, I-doped, and lightly N-doped samples, while ferromagnetism was considerably suppressed in heavily N-doped sample, which is consistent with the results of magnetization measurements.

Ferromagnetic interaction between Cu ions in the bulk region of Cu-doped ZnO nanowires

We have studied the electronic structure and the magnetism of Cu-doped ZnO nanowires, which have been reported to show ferromagnetism at room temperature [G. Z. Xing et{et} al{al}., Adv. Mater. {\bf 20}, 3521 (2008).], by x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). From the XPS and XAS results, we find that the Cu atoms are in the "Cu3+^{3+}" state with mixture of Cu2+^{2+} in the bulk region (∼\sim 100 nm), and that "Cu3+^{3+}" ions are dominant in the surface region (∼\sim 5 nm), i.e., the surface electronic structure of the surface region differs from the bulk one. From the magnetic field and temperature dependences of the XMCD intensity, we conclude that the ferromagnetic interaction in ZnO:Cu NWs comes from the Cu2+^{2+} and "Cu3+^{3+}" states in the bulk region, and that most of the doped Cu ions are magnetically inactive probably because they are antiferromagnetically coupled with each other.

Ferromagnetism in ZnO co-doped with Mn and N studied by soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism

We have investigated the electronic structure of ZnO:Mn and ZnO:Mn,N thin films using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and resonance-photoemission spectroscopy. From the Mn 2pp→3d\rightarrow3d XMCD results, it is shown that, while XMCD signals only due to paramagnetic Mn2+^{2+} ions were observed in ZnO:Mn, nonmagnetic, paramagnetic and ferromagnetic Mn2+^{2+} ions coexist in ZnO:Mn,N. XMCD signals of ZnO:Mn,N revealed that the localized Mn2+^{2+} ground state and Mn2+^{2+} state hybridized with ligand hole coexisted, implying pp-dd exchange coupling. In the valence-band spectra, spectral weight near the Fermi level was suppressed, suggesting that interaction between magnetic moments in ZnO:Mn,N has localized nature.
