Challenges for the 3-3-1 models

The so-called 3-3-1 models have been widely studied in the literature. However, in almost all cases, as with other models, just simplified versions have been considered. On the other hand, the LHC has not neither confirmed nor rejected any model. In this paper we discuss some aspects of the 3-3-1 models that must be investigated, or be re-analyzed, firstly theoretically and, eventually, experimentally. Some of these issues are independent of the representation content of the particular model, that is, they are independent of the value of the $β$ parameter. However, others strongly depend on the particular model considered.

Electric charge assignment in quantum field theories

In Field theories with simple or semi-simple unitary, local or global symmetries, the electric charge is related to a global one. This is the case also in electroweak gauge theories even before the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB), where these quantities are defined in order to expand the Lagrangian respecting the conservation laws after the breaking. So, the electric charge assignment within a given multiplet is done (in units of jej) considering only global symmetries, even though in general, the electric charge operator is a linear combination of the diagonal generators of the non-Abelian symmetry plus some Abelian factor. In this work we show how this operator can be systematically constructed from any representation in the Standard Model and some of its extensions as the 3-3-1, left-right symmetric and grand unified models.

Trimuon production at the LHC

No process without a standard model (SM) background has been observed so far. As a tool in the study of a class of models containing doubly charged vector bileptons, we propose one such process that, violating lepton flavor number conservation, has no contribution from the SM: $pp\to μ^+μ^+μ^- e^-$. By carefully isolating the parameters to keep them free, we are able to acquire a notion of how a possible PMNS-like matrix present in the relevant charged current parametrization could affect the observables. We find that an interesting section of the space of parameters can be explored at the current LHC in the specified conditions.

Lepton masses and mixing in a scotogenic model

We consider an extension of the standard model with three Higgs doublet model and $S_3\times \mathbb{Z}_2$ discrete symmetries. Two of the scalar doublets are inert due to the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. We have calculated all the mass spectra in the scalar and lepton sectors and accommodated the leptonic mixing matrix as well. We also show that the model has scalar and pseudoscalar candidates to dark matter. Constraints on the parameters of the model coming from the decay $μ\to eγ$ were considered and we found signals between the current and the upcoming experimental limits, and from that decay we can predict the one-loop $μ\to ee\bar{e}$ channel.

Lepton flavor violating processes in the minimal 3-3-1 model with singlet sterile neutrinos

We consider the minimal 3-3-1 model with three sterile neutrinos transforming as singlet under the $SU(3)_L\otimes U(1)_X$ symmetry. This model, with or without sterile neutrinos, predicts flavor violating interactions in both quark and lepton sectors, since all the charged fermions mass matrices can not be assumed diagonal in any case. Here we accommodate the lepton masses and the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakawaga-Sakata matrix at the same time, and as consequence the Yukawa couplings and the unitary matrices which diagonalize the mass matrices are not free parameters anymore. We study some phenomenological consequences, i.e., $l_i\to l_jl_k \bar{l}_k$ and $l_i\to l_jγ$ which are induced by neutral and doubly charged particles present in the model. In particular we find that if the decay $μ\to ee\bar{e}$ is observed in the future, the only particle in the model that could explain this decay is the doubly charged vector bilepton.

Natural Flavour Conservation in a three Higg-doublet Model

We consider an extension of the standard model (SM) with three $SU(2)$ scalar doublets and a discrete $S_3\otimes \mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetries. The irreducible representation of $S_3$ has a singlet and a doublet, and here we show that the singlet corresponds to the SM-like Higgs and the two additional $SU(2)$ doublets forming a $S_3$ doublet are inert. In general, in a three scalar doublet model, with or without $S_3$ symmetry, the diagonalization of the mass matrices implies arbitrary unitary matrices. However, we show that in our model these matrices are of the tri-bimaximal type. We also analyzed the scalar mass spectra and the conditions for the scalar potential is bounded from below at the tree level. We also discuss some phenomenological consequences of the model.

Neutron electric dipole moment in the minimal 3-3-1 model

We calculate the electric dipole moment (EDM) for the neutron in the framework of the minimal 3-3-1 model. We assume that the only source of $CP$ violation arises from a complex trilinear coupling constant and two complex vacuum expectation values. However, from the constraint equations obtained from the potential, only one physical phase remains. We find some constraints on the possible values of this phase and masses of the exotic particles.

Electron and neutron electric dipole moment in the 3-3-1 model with heavy leptons

We calculate the electric dipole moment for the electron and neutron in the framework of the 3-3-1 model with heavy charged leptons. We assume that the only source of $CP$ violation arises from a complex trilinear coupling constant and the three complex vacuum expectation values. However, two of the vacua phases are absorbed and the other two are equal up to a minus sign. Hence only one physical phase survives. In order to be compatible with the experimental data this phase has to be smaller than $10^{-6}$.

Minimal 3-3-1 model with a spectator sextet

We consider the minimal 3-3-1 model with a heavy scalar sextet and realize, at the tree level, an effective dimension-five interaction that contributes to the mass of the charged leptons. In this case the charged leptons masses arise from a sort of type-II seesawlike mechanism while the neutrino masses are generated by a type-I mechanism. We also show that the parameters giving the correct lepton masses also accommodate the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakawaga-Sakata matrix. We give the scalar mass spectra of the model and analyze under which conditions the fields in the scalar sextet are heavy even with small or zero vacuum expectation values. We also show the conditions under which it is possible to have a stable (bounded from below) potential and also a global minimum.

Neutral meson mixing induced by box diagrams in the 3-3-1 model with heavy leptons

We consider in the 3-3-1 model with heavy leptons the box contributions to the mass difference in $K$ and $B$ neutral mesons induced by neutral (pseudo)scalars, exotic charged quarks, singly and doubly charged scalar and gauge bosons. In particular, we include the effects of a real scalar with mass near 125 GeV but with non-diagonal couplings to quarks. We show that, as in the tree level case, there are ranges of the parameters in which these contributions can be enough suppressed by negative interference among several amplitudes. Hence, in this model these $ΔF=2$ processes may be dominated by the standard model contributions. In addition, our results are valid in the minimal 3-3-1 model without the sextet.

Prediction of $h\toγZ$ from $h\toγγ$ at LHC for the IMDS$_3$ Model

We consider the decays $h\toγγ,γZ$ in the context of an extension of the standard model with two inert doublets and an additional $S_3$ symmetry. This model has contributions for these processes through new charged scalar-loops. Comparing our $h\toγγ$ with the more precise available experimental data we can predict the behaviour of $h\toγZ$ due that they depend on the same parameters, our estimation for this channel is 1.05 times the standard model value, but can be up to 1.16 if consider the $+1σ$ uncertainty from the $h\toγγ$ data, and down to 0.96 if consider $-1σ$.

Secluded WIMPs, QED with massive photons, and the galactic center gamma-ray excess

We propose to investigate a secluded WIMP dark matter model consisting of neutral fermions as the dark matter candidate and a Proca-Wentzel (PW) field as a mediator. In the model that we consider here, dark matter WIMPs interact with standard model (SM) particles only through the PW field of ~ MeV -- multi-GeV mass particles. The interactions occur via an U(1)' mediator, V_μ', which couples to the SM by kinetic mixing with U(1) hypercharge bosons, B_μ. One important difference between our model and other such models in the literature is the absence of an extra singlet scalar, so that the parameter with dimension of mass M^2_V is not related to a spontaneous symmetry breaking. This QED based model is also renormalizable. The mass scale of the mediator and the absence of the singlet scalar can lead to interesting astrophysical signatures. The dominant annihilation channels are different from those usually considered in previous work. We show that the GeV-energy gamma-ray excess in the galactic center region, as derived from Fermi-LAT Gamma-ray Space Telescope data, can be attributed to such secluded dark matter WIMPs, given parameters of the model that are consistent with the cosmological dark matter density. Secluded WIMP models are also consistent with suggested upper limits on the DM contribution to the cosmic-ray antiproton flux.

Scalar Dark Matter Candidates in Two Inert Higgs Doublet Model

We study a two scalar inert doublet model (IDMS$_3$) which is stabilized by a $S_3$ symmetry. We consider two scenarios: i) two of the scalars in each charged sector are mass degenerated due to a residual $Z_2$ symmetry, ii) there is no mass degeneracy because of the introduction of soft terms that break the $Z_2$ symmetry. We show that both scenarios provide good dark matter candidates for some range of parameters.

FCNC in the minimal 3-3-1 model revisited

We show that in the minimal 3-3-1 model the flavor changing neutral currents (FCNCs) do not impose necessarily strong constraints on the mass of the $Z^\prime$ of the model if we also consider the neutral scalar contributions to such processes, like the neutral mesons mass difference and rare semileptonic decays. We first obtain numerical values for all the mixing matrices of the model i.e., the unitary matrices that rotate the left- and right-handed quarks in each charge sector which give the correct mass of all the quarks and the CKM mixing matrix. Then, we find that there is a range of parameters in which the neutral scalar contributions to these processes may interfere with those of the $Z^\prime$, implying this vector boson may be lighter than it has been thought.

Quasi-Dirac neutrinos and solar neutrino data

We present an analysis of the solar neutrino data in the context of a quasi-Dirac neutrino model in which the lepton mixing matrix is given at tree level by the tribimaximal matrix. When radiative corrections are taken into account, new effects in neutrino oscillations, as $ν_e \to ν_s$, appear. This oscillation is constrained by the solar neutrino data. In our analysis, we have found an allowed region for our two free parameters $ε$ and $m_1$. The radiative correction, $ε$, can vary approximately from $5\times 10^{-9}$ to $10^{-6}$ and the calculated fourth mass eigenstate, $m_4$, 0.01 eV to 0.2 eV at 2$σ$ level. These results are very similar to the ones presented in the literature.

Quasi-Dirac neutrinos in a model with local $B-L$ symmetry

In a model with $B-L$ gauge symmetry, right-handed neutrinos may have exotic local $B-L$ charge assignment: two of them with $B-L=-4$ and the other one having $B-L=5$. Then, it is natural to accommodate the right-handed neutrinos with the same $B-L$ charge in a doublet of the discrete $S_3$ symmetry, and the third one in a singlet. If the Yukawa interactions involving right-handed neutrinos are invariant under $S_3$, the quasi-Dirac neutrino scheme arise naturally in this model. However, we will show how in this scheme it is possible to give a value for $θ_{13}$ in agreement with the Daya Bay results. For example the $S_3$ symmetry has to be broken in the Yukawa interactions involving right-handed charged lepton.

On fermion masses and mixing in a model with $A_4$ symmetry

In a recently proposed multi-Higgs extension of the standard model in which discrete symmetries, $A_4$ and $Z_3$ are imposed we show that, after accommodating the fermion masses and the mixing matrices in the charged currents, the mixing matrices in the neutral currents induced by neutral scalars are numerically obtained. However, the flavor changing neutral currents are under control mainly by mixing and/or mass suppressions in the neutral scalar sector.

preprint2011arXiv

Three-Higgs-doublet model with $A_4$ symmetry

We worked out in detail the three-Higgs-doublet extension of the standard model when the $A_4$ symmetry, which is imposed to solve the flavor problem, is extended to the scalar sector. The three doublets may be related to the fermion mass generation and, in particular, they may be the unique responsible for the generation of the neutrino masses. If this is the case, the respective VEVs have to be quite smaller than the electroweak scale if no fine tuning in the Yukawa couplings is assumed. We consider here the mass spectra in the scalar sector in three different situations. In one of them there are no light scalars at all, but in the other ones a light or two massless scalars, at the tree level, may survive. The later fields are safe, from the phenomenological point of view, since it couples mainly with neutrinos and/or becomes enough massive at the tree level if there exist trilinear interactions. Quantum effects may be important too.

Asymmetries in $e^+e^-\to f\bar{f}$ processes at ILC for models with an extra neutral vector boson $Z^\prime$

Many extensions of the standard model predict the existence of extra neutral vector bosons, generically referred as $Z^\prime$. This boson may be discovered at the LHC but in this case it will be necessary to study the respective parameters in order to discriminate to which model it belongs to. This is a task for a much clean lepton linear collider as the future ILC. In this paper we develop an exemplary study of the capability of several asymmetries on and off $Z^\prime$ peak in discriminating among those extensions with (almost) no ambiguities.

Custodial Symmetry and Extensions of the Standard Model

We show that the extension of the approximate custodial $SU(2)_{L+R}$ global symmetry to all the Yukawa interactions of the standard model Lagrangian implies the introduction of sterile right-handed neutrinos and the seesaw mechanism in this sector. In this framework, the observed quark and lepton masses may be interpreted as an effect of physics beyond the standard model. The mechanism used for breaking this symmetry in the Yukawa sector could be different from the one at work in the vector boson sector. We give three model independent examples of these mechanisms.

Soft CP violation in K-meson systems

We consider a model with soft CP violation which accommodate the CP violation in the neutral kaons even if we assume that the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa mixing matrix is real and the sources of CP violation are three complex vacuum expectation values and a trilinear coupling in the scalar potential. We show that for some reasonable values of the masses and other parameters the model allows to explain all the observed CP violation processes in the $K^0$-$\bar{K}^0$ system.

Left-right asymmetries and exotic vector-boson discovery in lepton-lepton colliders

By considering left-right (L-R) asymmetries we study the capabilities of lepton colliders in searching for new exotic vector bosons. Specifically we study the effect of a doubly charged bilepton boson and an extra neutral vector boson appearing in a 3-3-1 model on the L-R asymmetries for the processes $e^-e^-\to e^-e^-$, $μ^-μ^-\toμ^-μ^-$ and $e^-μ^-\to e^-μ^-$ and show that these asymmetries are very sensitive to these new contributions and that they are in fact powerful tools for discovery this sort of vector bosons.

Left-right asymmetries in polarized $e-μ$ scattering

We consider, in the electroweak standard model context, several left-right asymmetries in $μe$ elastic scattering at fixed target and collider experiments. For the former case, we show that the muon mass effects are important in a wide energy range. We also show that these asymmetries are sensitive to the electroweak mixing angle $θ_W$. The effect of an extra $Z'$ neutral vector boson appearing in a 331 model is also considered. The capabilities of these asymmetries in the search of this extra $Z'$ are addressed.

Soft superweak CP violation in a 331 model

We show that it is possible to implement soft superweak CP violation in the context of a 331 model with only three triplets. All CP violation effects come from the exchange of singly and doubly charged scalars. We consider the implication of this mechanism in the quark and lepton sectors. In particular it is shown that in this model, as in most of those which incorporate the scalar mediated CP violation, it is possible to have large electric dipole moments for the muon and the tau lepton while keeping small those of the electron and the neutron. The CKM mixing matrix is real up to the two loop level.
