Introduction to the theory of elliptic hypergeometric integrals

We give a brief account of the key properties of elliptic hypergeometric integrals -- a relatively recently discovered top class of transcendental special functions of hypergeometric type. In particular, we describe an elliptic generalization of Euler's and Selberg's beta integrals, elliptic analogue of the Euler-Gauss hypergeometric function and some multivariable elliptic hypergeometric functions on root systems. The elliptic Fourier transformation and corresponding integral Bailey lemma technique is outlined together with a connection to the star-triangle relation and Coxeter relations for a permutation group. We review also the interpretation of elliptic hypergeometric integrals as superconformal indices of four dimensional supersymmetric quantum field theories and corresponding applications to Seiberg type dualities.

Elliptic hypergeometric functions

This is author's Habilitation Thesis (Dr. Sci. dissertation) submitted at the beginning of September 2004. It is written in Russian and is posted due to the continuing requests for the manuscript. The content: 1. Introduction, 2. Nonlinear chains with the discrete time and their self-similar solutions, 3. General theory of theta hypergeometric series, 4. Theta hypergeometric integrals, 5. Biorthogonal functions, 6. Elliptic hypergeometric functions with |q|=1, 7. Conclusion, 8. References. It contains an outline of a general heuristic scheme for building univariate special functions through self-similar reductions of spectral transformation chains, which allowed construction of the differential-difference q-Painleve equations, as well as of the most general known set of elliptic biorthogonal functions comprising all classical orthogonal polynomials and biorthogonal rational functions. One of the key results of the thesis consists in the discovery of genuinely transcendental elliptic hypergeometric functions determined by the elliptic hypergeometric integrals. The whole theory of such integrals can be built from the univariate elliptic beta integral -- the most complicated known definite integral with exact evaluation, which generalizes the ordinary binomial theorem and its q-extension, Euler's beta integral, the measure for Askey-Wilson polynomials, and many other previously established results on ordinary and q-hypergeometric functions.

Finite-dimensional representations of the elliptic modular double

We investigate the kernel space of an integral operator M(g) depending on the "spin" g and describing an elliptic Fourier transformation. The operator M(g) is an intertwiner for the elliptic modular double formed from a pair of Sklyanin algebras with the parameters $η$ and $τ$, Im$ τ>0$, Im$η>0$. For two-dimensional lattices $g=nη+ mτ/2$ and $g=1/2+nη+ mτ/2$ with incommensurate $1, 2η,τ$ and integers $n,m>0$, the operator M(g) has a finite-dimensional kernel that consists of the products of theta functions with two different modular parameters and is invariant under the action of generators of the elliptic modular double.

New elliptic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation

We consider finite-dimensional reductions of an integral operator with the elliptic hypergeometric kernel describing the most general known solution of the Yang-Baxter equation with a rank 1 symmetry algebra. The reduced R-operators reproduce at their bottom the standard Baxter's R-matrix for the 8-vertex model and Sklyanin's L-operator. The general formula has a remarkably compact form and yields new elliptic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation based on the finite-dimensional representations of the elliptic modular double. The same result is also derived using the fusion formalism.

The star-triangle relation and 3d superconformal indices

Superconformal indices of 3d N=2 supersymmetric field theories are investigated from the Yang-Baxter equation point of view. Solutions of the star-triangle relation, vertex and IRF Yang-Baxter equations are expressed in terms of the q-special functions associated with these 3d indices. For a two-dimensional monopole-spin system on the square lattice a free energy per spin is explicitly determined. Similar to the partition functions, superconformal indices of 3d theories with the chiral symmetry breaking reduce to Dirac delta functions with the support on chemical potentials of the preserved flavor groups.

Vanishing superconformal indices and the chiral symmetry breaking

Superconformal indices of 4d \N=1 SYM theories with SU(N) and SP(2N) gauge groups are investigated for N_f=N and N_f=N+1 flavors, respectively. These indices vanish for generic values of the flavor fugacities. However, for a singular submanifold of fugacities they behave like the Dirac delta functions and describe the chiral symmetry breaking phenomenon. Similar picture holds for partition functions of 3d supersymmetric field theories with the chiral symmetry breaking.

Aspects of elliptic hypergeometric functions

General elliptic hypergeometric functions are defined by elliptic hypergeometric integrals. They comprise the elliptic beta integral, elliptic analogues of the Euler-Gauss hypergeometric function and Selberg integral, as well as elliptic extensions of many other plain hypergeometric and $q$-hypergeometric constructions. In particular, the Bailey chain technique, used for proving Rogers-Ramanujan type identities, has been generalized to integrals. At the elliptic level it yields a solution of the Yang-Baxter equation as an integral operator with an elliptic hypergeometric kernel. We give a brief survey of the developments in this field.

Elliptic hypergeometry of supersymmetric dualities II. Orthogonal groups, knots, and vortices

We consider Seiberg electric-magnetic dualities for 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ SYM theories with SO(N) gauge group. For all such known theories we construct superconformal indices (SCIs) in terms of elliptic hypergeometric integrals. Equalities of these indices for dual theories lead both to proven earlier special function identities and new conjectural relations for integrals. In particular, we describe a number of new elliptic beta integrals associated with the s-confining theories with the spinor matter fields. Reductions of some dualities from SP(2N) to SO(2N) or SO(2N+1) gauge groups are described. Interrelation of SCIs and the Witten anomaly is briefly discussed. Possible applications of the elliptic hypergeometric integrals to a two-parameter deformation of 2d conformal field theory and related matrix models are indicated. Connections of the reduced SCIs with the state integrals of the knot theory, generalized AGT duality for (3+3)d theories, and a 2d vortex partition function are described.

Yang-Baxter equation, parameter permutations, and the elliptic beta integral

We construct an infinite-dimensional solution of the Yang-Baxter equation (YBE) of rank 1 which is represented as an integral operator with an elliptic hypergeometric kernel acting in the space of functions of two complex variables. This R-operator intertwines the product of two standard L-operators associated with the Sklyanin algebra, an elliptic deformation of sl(2)-algebra. It is built from three basic operators $\mathrm{S}_1, \mathrm{S}_2$, and $\mathrm{S}_3$ generating the permutation group of four parameters $\mathfrak{S}_4$. Validity of the key Coxeter relations (including the star-triangle relation) is based on the elliptic beta integral evaluation formula and the Bailey lemma associated with an elliptic Fourier transformation. The operators $\mathrm{S}_j$ are determined uniquely with the help of the elliptic modular double.

Elliptic beta integrals and solvable models of statistical mechanics

The univariate elliptic beta integral was discovered by the author in 2000. Recently Bazhanov and Sergeev have interpreted it as a star-triangle relation (STR). This important observation is discussed in more detail in connection to author's previous work on the elliptic modular double and supersymmetric dualities. We describe also a new Faddeev-Volkov type solution of STR, connections with the star-star relation, and higher-dimensional analogues of such relations. In this picture, Seiberg dualities are described by symmetries of the elliptic hypergeometric integrals (interpreted as superconformal indices) which, in turn, represent STR and Kramers-Wannier type duality transformations for elementary partition functions in solvable models of statistical mechanics.

Elliptic hypergeometry of supersymmetric dualities

We give a full list of known $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric quantum field theories related by the Seiberg electric-magnetic duality conjectures for $SU(N), SP(2N)$ and $G_2$ gauge groups. Many of the presented dualities are new, not considered earlier in the literature. For all these theories we construct superconformal indices and express them in terms of elliptic hypergeometric integrals. This gives a systematic extension of the related Romelsberger and Dolan-Osborn results. Equality of indices in dual theories leads to various identities for elliptic hypergeometric integrals. About half of them were proven earlier, and another half represents new challenging conjectures. In particular, we conjecture a dozen new elliptic beta integrals on root systems extending the univariate elliptic beta integral discovered by the first author.

From 4d superconformal indices to 3d partition functions

An exact formula for partition functions in 3d field theories was recently suggested by Jafferis, and Hama, Hosomichi, and Lee. These functions are expressed in terms of specific $q$-hypergeometric integrals whose key building block is the double sine function (or the hyperbolic gamma function). Elliptic hypergeometric integrals, discovered by the second author, define 4d superconformal indices. Using their reduction to the hyperbolic level, we describe a general scheme of reducing 4d superconformal indices to 3d partition functions which imply an efficient way of getting 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric dualities for both SYM and CS theories from the "parent" 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ dualities for SYM theories. As an example, we consider explicitly the duality pattern for 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SYM and CS theories with SP(2N) gauge group with the antisymmetric tensor matter.

Superconformal indices of ${\mathcal N}=4$ SYM field theories

Superconformal indices (SCIs) of 4d ${\mathcal N}=4$ SYM theories with simple gauge groups are described in terms of elliptic hypergeometric integrals. For $F_4, E_6, E_7, E_8$ gauge groups this yields first examples of integrals of such type. S-duality transformation for G_2 and F_4 SCIs is equivalent to a change of integration variables. Equality of SCIs for SP(2N) and SO(2N+1) group theories is proved in several important special cases. Reduction of SCIs to partition functions of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SYM theories with one matter field in the adjoint representation is investigated, corresponding 3d dual partners are found, and some new related hyperbolic beta integrals are conjectured.

Superconformal indices of three-dimensional theories related by mirror symmetry

Recently, Kim and Imamura and Yokoyama derived an exact formula for superconformal indices in three-dimensional field theories. Using their results, we prove analytically the equality of superconformal indices in some U(1)-gauge group theories related by the mirror symmetry. The proofs are based on the well known identities of the theory of $q$-special functions. We also suggest the general index formula taking into account the $U(1)_J$ global symmetry present for abelian theories.

Theta hypergeometric integrals

We define a general class of (multiple) integrals of hypergeometric type associated with the Jacobi theta functions. These integrals are related to theta hypergeometric series through the residue calculus. In the one variable case, we get theta function extensions of the Meijer function. A number of multiple generalizations of the elliptic beta integral [S2] associated with the root systems $A_n$ and $C_n$ is described. Some of the $C_n$-examples were proposed earlier by van Diejen and the author, but other integrals are new. An example of the biorthogonality relations associated with the elliptic beta integrals is considered in detail.
