Experimental demonstration of a controlled-NOT wave-packet gate

We report the experimental demonstration of a controlled-NOT (CNOT) quantum logic gate between motional and internal state qubits of a single ion where, as opposed to previously demonstrated gates, the conditional dynamics depends on the extent of the ion's wave-packet. Advantages of this CNOT gate over one demonstrated previously are its immunity from Stark shifts due to off-resonant couplings and the fact that an auxiliary internal level is not required. We characterize the gate logic through measurements of the post-gate ion state populations for both logic basis and superposition input states, and we demonstrate the gate coherence via an interferometric measurement.

Trapped-Ion Quantum Simulator: Experimental Application to Nonlinear Interferometers

We show how an experimentally realized set of operations on a single trapped ion is sufficient to simulate a wide class of Hamiltonians of a spin-1/2 particle in an external potential. This system is also able to simulate other physical dynamics. As a demonstration, we simulate the action of an nn-th order nonlinear optical beamsplitter. Two of these beamsplitters can be used to construct an interferometer sensitive to phase shifts in one of the interferometer beam paths. The sensitivity in determining these phase shifts increases linearly with nn, and the simulation demonstrates that the use of nonlinear beamsplitters (nn=2,3) enhances this sensitivity compared to the standard quantum limit imposed by a linear beamsplitter (nn=1).

Measurement of the 1s-2s energy interval in muonium

The 1s-2s interval has been measured in the muonium ({μ+e−μ^+e^-}) atom by Doppler-free two-photon laser spectroscopy. The frequency separation of the states was determined to be 2 455 528 941.0(9.8) MHz in good agreement with quantum electrodynamics. The muon-electron mass ratio can be extracted and is found to be 206.768 38(17). The result may be interpreted as measurement of the muon-electron charge ratio as −1−1.1(2.1)⋅10−9-1- 1.1(2.1)\cdot 10^{-9}.

Improved upper limit on Muonium to Antimuonium Conversion

A new experiment has been set up at the Paul Scherrer Institut to search for muonium to antimuonium conversion. No event was found to fulfil the requested signature which consists of the coincident detection of both constituents of the antiatom in its decay. Assuming an effective (V-A)×\times(V-A) type interaction an improved upper limit is established for the conversion probability of PMMˉ≤8⋅10−9{\rm P_{M\bar{M}}} \leq 8 \cdot 10^{-9} (90%C.L.), which is almost two orders of magnitude lower compared to previous results and provides a sensitive test for theoretical extensions of the standard model.

Increased Sensitivity to Possible Muonium to Antimuonium Conversion

A new experimental search for muonium-antimuonium conversion was conducted at the Paul Scherrer Institute, Villigen, Switzerland. The preliminary analysis yielded one event fulfilling all required criteria at an expected background of 1.7(2) events due to accidental coincidences. An upper limit for the conversion probability in 0.1 T magnetic field is extracted as 8⋅10−118 \cdot 10^{-11} (90% CL).

Results from Searching for Muonium to Antimuonium Conversion

A new result from searching for muonium to antimuonium conversion is reported which sets an upper limit on the coupling constant in an assumed (V−A)×(V−A)(V-A) \times (V-A) type interaction of GMMˉ≤3⋅10−3GFG_{M\bar{M}} \leq 3\cdot 10^{-3} G_F ~ (90% C.L.). A particular Z_8 and a minimal 331 GUT model can be ruled out. Further new and stringent limits can be set for masses of bileptonic gauge bosons and λλ parameters in R-parity breaking supersymmetric models.
