Commissioning of the PADME experiment with a positron beam

The PADME experiment is designed to search for a hypothetical dark photon $A^{\prime}$ produced in positron-electron annihilation using a bunched positron beam at the Beam Test Facility of the INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati. The expected sensitivity to the $A^{\prime}$-photon mixing parameter $ε$ is 10$^{-3}$, for $A^{\prime}$ mass $\le$ 23.5 MeV/$c^{2}$ after collecting $\sim 10^{13}$ positrons-on-target. This paper presents the PADME detector status after commissioning in July 2019. In addition, the software algorithms employed to reconstruct physics objects, such as photons and charged particles, and the calibration procedures adopted are illustrated in detail. The results show that the experimental apparatus reaches the design performance, and is able to identify and measure standard electromagnetic processes, such as positron Bremsstrahlung, electron-positron annihilation into two photons.

Dark boson mediation of the $π^0\rightarrow γe^+ e^-$ decay

The phenomenological implications to the decay of the neutral pion from the introduction of new dark particles are discussed. We calculate the contribution to the $π^0$ decay width and then we extend the theory by adding dark sector vector particles which interact through $γ^μ$, $σ^{μν}$ and $σ^{μν}γ^5$. We calculate the total decay width of $π^0\rightarrow γe^+ e^-$ where the electron-positron pair is produced through a decay of a dark meson. The implication of the presented model on the present and future searches for new dark particles is also discussed.

The PADME beam line Monte Carlo simulation

The PADME experiment at the DA$Φ$NE Beam-Test Facility (BTF) of the INFN Laboratory of Frascati is designed to search for invisible decays of dark sector particles produced in electron-positron annihilation events with a positron beam and a thin fixed target, by measuring the missing mass of single-photon final states. The presence of backgrounds originating from beam halo particles can significantly reduce the sensitivity of the experiment. To thoroughly understand the origin of the beam background contribution, a detailed Geant4-based Monte Carlo simulation has been developed, containing a full description of the detector together with the beam line and its optical elements. This simulation allows the full interactions of each particle to be described, both during beam line transport and during detection, a possibility which represents an innovative way to obtain reliable background predictions

ChPT tests at the NA48 and NA62 experiments at CERN

The NA48/2 Collaboration at CERN has accumulated unprecedented statistics of rare kaon decays in the Ke4 modes: Ke4(+-) ($K^\pm \to π^+ π^- e^\pm ν$) and Ke4(00) ($K^\pm \to π^0 π^0 e^\pm ν$) with nearly one percent background contamination. The detailed study of form factors and branching rates, based on these data, has been completed recently. The results brings new inputs to low energy strong interactions description and tests of Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) and lattice QCD calculations. In particular, new data support the ChPT prediction for a cusp in the $π^0π^0$ invariant mass spectrum at the two charged pions threshold for Ke4(00) decay. New final results from an analysis of about 400 $K^\pm \to π^\pm γγ$ rare decay candidates collected by the NA48/2 and NA62 experiments at CERN during low intensity runs with minimum bias trigger configurations are presented. The results include a model-independent decay rate measurement and fits to ChPT description.

New Projects on Dark Photon Search

Despite the great success of the Standard Model of particle physics the nature of Dark Matter still remains unclear. Recently, the idea of the existence of a hidden sector coupling only weakly with the ordinary matter was revitalized and gained popularity. A simple mediator between the hidden and the visible sector could be a vector particle of a new gauge interaction, the so called dark photon. Numerous of activities were initiated to probe its parameter space. The present results and the foreseen experiments aimed to search for dark photons in few directions are reviewed and discussed.

Study of the performance of the NA62 Small-Angle Calorimeter at the DA$Φ$NE Linac

The measurement of $BR(K^+\toπ^+ν\barν)$ with 10% precision by the NA62 experiment requires extreme background suppression. The Small Angle Calorimeter aims to provide an efficient veto for photons flying at angles down to zero with respect to the kaon flight direction. The initial prototype was upgraded and tested at the Beam Test Facility of the DA$Φ$NE Linac at Frascati. The energy resolution and the efficiency were measured and are presented.

Recent NA48/2 and NA62 results

The NA48/2 Collaboration at CERN has accumulated and analysed unprecedented statistics of rare kaon decays in the $K_{e4}$ modes: $K_{e4}(+-)$ ($K^\pm \to π^+ π^- e^\pm ν$) and $K_{e4}(00)$ ($K^\pm \to π^0 π^0 e^\pm ν$) with nearly one percent background contamination. It leads to the improved measurement of branching fractions and detailed form factor studies. New final results from the analysis of 381 $K^\pm \to π^\pm γγ$ rare decay candidates collected by the NA48/2 and NA62 experiments at CERN are presented. The results include a decay rate measurement and fits to Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) description.

Time over threshold in the presence of noise

The time over threshold is a widely used quantity to describe signals from various detectors in particle physics. Its electronics implementation is straightforward and in this paper we present the studies of its behavior in the presence of noise. A unique comb-like structure was identified in the data for a first time and was explained and modeled successfully. The effects of that structure on the efficiency and resolution are also discussed.

Measurement of the branching ratio of the decay $Ξ^{0}\rightarrow Σ^{+} μ^{-} \barν_μ$

From the 2002 data taking with a neutral kaon beam extracted from the CERN-SPS, the NA48/1 experiment observed 97 $Ξ^{0}\rightarrow Σ^{+} μ^{-} \barν_μ$ candidates with a background contamination of $30.8 \pm 4.2$ events. From this sample, the BR($Ξ^{0}\rightarrow Σ^{+} μ^{-} \barν_μ$) is measured to be $(2.17 \pm 0.32_{\mathrm{stat}}\pm 0.17_{\mathrm{syst}})\times10^{-6}$.

Empirical parameterization of the K+- -> pi+- pi0 pi0 decay Dalitz plot

As first observed by the NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS, the $\p0p0$ invariant mass (M00) distribution from $\kcnn$ decay shows a cusp-like anomaly at M00=2m+, where m+ is the charged pion mass. An analysis to extract the pi pi scattering lengths in the isospin I=0 and I=2 states, a0 and a2, respectively, has been recently reported. In the present work the Dalitz plot of this decay is fitted to a new empirical parameterization suitable for practical purposes, such as Monte Carlo simulations of K+- -> pi+- pi0 pi0 decays.
